Nominate Your Favorite Business for Small Business of the Year The Chamber’s new Small Business Work Group is launching a Small Business Week Celebration in May. The new program started through the Chamber’s ShelbyOne initiative is sponsored by Regions Bank, and will salute the impact small businesses have on Shelby County’s economy. Nominations for Small Business Person of the Year (in multiple categories based upon size of the company) will be accepted through April 26. April Membership Luncheon to Focus on Stress and it’s Affect on You
The Chamber’s Membership Luncheon, hosted by the Chamber’s Health Services Work Group and scheduled for April 24, will feature a presentation on “Stress And It’s Affect on You” by Dr. James Colvard, Oak Mountain Family Medicine. Dr. Colvard’s specialty is family medicine. His education and training include attending medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at the Montgomery Family Medicine Program. Learn the possible causes of Stress — Both positive and negative events in one’s life can be stressful. However, major life changes are the greatest contributors of stress for most people. They place the greatest
demand on resources for coping. Also learn how to best approach stress management — Finding stress reduction practices that fit into your daily lifestyle is a good goal. He will discuss several ways to relieve the stress from your day. Finally, Dr. Colvard will discuss stress and it’s affects on you -- mentally and physically. The luncheon will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena with doors opening at 11:00 AM for networking and the Showcase City

Health Focus of the Month Physical Activity is Key to a Healthy Heart The American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity). 30 minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. The simplest, positive change you can make to effectively improve your heart health is to start walking. Here are 10 tips for getting active! • Get out the leash and walk your dog.
•Tune into fitness during TV time.
•Take your child for a brisk walk.
•Park and walk.
•Mall walk. •Join a team. •Walk and talk.
•Take the stairs. •Dance! •Skip the cake, say goodbye to pie and take a walk after dinner.

Welcome to the Chamber Keyla Handley! Keyla Handley has joined the Chamber staff team as its new Community and Workforce Development Manager. This new position created by the Chamber’s ShelbyOne initiative will be working with the Educational, Health Services, and Community Improvement Work Groups. Keyla and her husband KC reside in Columbiana. She is a Graduate of the University of Montevallo. Before coming to the Chamber, she worked for a local Attorney’s office in Shelby County.

Eighteen business and community leaders participated in the Greater Shelby County Chamber’s Montgomery Drive-In held in March. The day included a private meeting with Governor Robert Bentley, lunch with the legislative delegation, and a series of presentations by Alabama department agencies.
Congratulations to Champion Cleaners in Calera on moving to its new facility and expanding services. Owners David and Sherry Whitehurst opened their first cleaners in November 2002 and have been expanding services to customers ever since that time!
Congratulations on the opening of the Chelsea office of Skin Wellness Center of Alabama. Dr. Corey Hartman cut the ribbon with the support of Mayor Earl Niven, family, friends, co-workers and patients.

Chamber forms partnership with UM to provide internships The Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Stephens College of Business, University of Montevallo, Center for Professional Practice. The partnership is designed for opportunities in the “real world of work” between students and the business community through paid internships. Serving as a liaison between UM’s business students and Shelby County area professionals, we want to be the contact for ‘interns’ in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Management. The ultimate goal is to keep some of our ‘best’ students working in Shelby County. Paid internships are a priority and academic credit can be earned. The mission of the Stephens College of Business is to assist students in the transition from academics to the business community.
