How My Chamber Membership Works for Me Greater Shelby Chamber’s seminars and workshops are an ideal way for our team to develop skills in a variety of areas including management, customer service, sales, etc. that are important to our employees and company’s continued success. For example, we’ve already implemented many of the things we learned at the “Business Basics for Christine Managers” workshop conducted by Michael Roberts Smith, TheGREATtheGOODandtheGONE, and Brown they’ve been tremendously worthwhile. While there are lots of professional development options out there, the Chamber’s offerings are cost effective and convenient to attend. Health Focus of the Month

Stay Hydrated During the Summer Months When temperatures are on the rise, so is the risk for dehydration. Alabama’s hot and humid summers create harsh conditions that make it challenging to stay fully hydrated. Even if you think you are taking in enough fluids, dehydration can sneak up suddenly and can lead to serious health conditions. First, it’s important to understand why hydration is critical to the body. Water is the most abundant chemical in our bodies, which comprises 70 percent of our body composition. Almost all chemical reactions in the body take place in water, so staying properly hydrated is very important. Dehydration occurs when the body loses important levels of water and blood salts like potassium and sodium. Vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, and heart cannot function properly without the right levels of water and salts in the body. The signs of mild dehydration are subtle and can often be missed. Thirst is usually the first indicator of dehydration. When you feel thirsty, the dehydration process has already begun. It’s important to recognize 2013 Health Focus Sponsor

this sign and start hydrating quickly before dehydration becomes worse. Other signs of mild dehydration include dry lips and dry mouth. Moderate dehydration is often characterized by extreme dry mouth, cramping, lethargy, and skin that does not bounce back quickly when pinched and released. Signs of severe dehydration include rapid and weak pulse, rapid breathing, unusually tired, confusion, cold hands and feet, and blue lips. If someone is exhibiting any signs of severe dehydration, they must be taken to a hospital right away as intravenous fluids are the quickest and most effect way of treating the extreme dehydration. Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness. Those who are exercising in the heat and the elderly are most prone to heat

stroke, but even those with mild dehydration can reach heat stroke when the weather is extremely hot and they are outside for any period of time. Heat stroke is characterized by warm, flushed skin, no sweating, deliria and seizures. If you notice any of these symptoms in a person, bring them indoors immediately and call 911. If no indoor facility is available, have the person lie down in the shade. Laying ice packs on the person’s skin can help cool them down until paramedics arrive. The most effective way to prevent dehydration is to drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day. More water is recommended for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or those who are often outdoors and taking part in physical activity. Sports drinks are best for those who partake in strenuous physical activity. Water is preferred for those with low to moderate physical activity. To ensure you are drinking enough fluids, make it a habit to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go and drink plenty with every meal. If possible, seek out shade whenever outdoors, or bring an umbrella with you if no shade is available. Light colored clothing helps to reflect sunlight rather than dark colors, which absorb the sun and heat. Avoid alcohol and other sugary drinks, especially during the heat of the day.
