Rhett McCreight

Congratulations to Rhett McCreight for earning Ambassador of the Month in August. Rhett is an account executive with the Shelby County Reporter, H-Life Magazine and Shelby Living Magazine. He is involved with the American Diabetes Association serving on the Executive Board, President of the Junior Board, and Chair of the 4 Step Out Walk’s Across Alabama. He was born and raised in Alexander City and attended Jacksonville State University. In his free time, Rhett enjoys coaching his oldest nephew in baseball and volunteering his time to help colleagues and friends with their charities. Rhett tied with Butch Byrd for August Ambassador of the Month

Butch Byrd Congratulations to Butch Byrd for being named August Ambassador of the Month. Butch is the General Manager of Ballantrae Golf Club located in the Ballantrae subdivision, Pelham. Ballantrae Golf Club is an 18 hole Championship Golf Course owned and operated by the City of Pelham. The course was designed by world-renowned golf course architect, Bob Cupp and opened in June of 2004, catering to both members and the general golfing public. Their goal is to offer the finest conditioned golf course with the friendliest staff at affordable prices. In keeping with those goals, they developed a slogan for Ballantrae, “Fast, Fun, and Friendly” - Fast because players can complete their round more quickly than most courses, Fun because they mow the fairways wider and grass more closely so there is no deep rough in which to lose golf balls, and Friendly because they have a great staff who love serving others! The approach is working because the total annual rounds of golf have grown from 24,000 in 2004 to almost 40,000 today. Butch is proud that he consistently receives strong, positive accolades from their members and guests. Butch is a 42 year member of the PGA and was inducted into the Dixie Section PGA Hall of Fame in 2004. He is a graduate of Auburn University and was commissioned into the U.S. Army upon graduation. He is married to Carole, and they have two children and three precious grandchildren who live in Huntsville. Butch tied with Rhett McCreight for August Ambassador of the Month.

Health Focus of the Month

A Stroke Survivor’s Story In honor of National Rehabilitation Week which is September 15-21, 2013, I will be sharing some of what a stroke survivor’s day is like. Do you know that rehabilitation is the process of restoring a patient’s ability to live and work as normally as possible after a disabling disease, injury, or illness? Do you know someone who has gone through the rehabilitation process? I do, and her name is Gail Parker. Gail 2013 Health Focus Sponsor

has a Master’s Degree in Vocal Music from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Gail was in her 30’s, busy singing and performing locally and throughout the State of Alabama, when her life forever changed. Gail had a congenital disease called AVM (arteriovenous malformation). This disorder is characterized by a complex and tangled web of arteries and veins in the brain which caused Gail to have a massive stroke. After being in a coma for a period of time, Gail discovered that she had some paralysis on the left side of her body and her ability to sing had been compromised. Gail received extensive rehabilitation which helped her recover from some of her paralysis. However, she does have partial paralysis in

her left arm and leg, and she feels that her vocal talent has not totally returned. Immediately after the stroke, Gail had not only one major adjustment of life, but also a major adjustment of moving back home with her parents. There were activities of daily living which she was unable to perform at that time. However, she did not take the time to feel sorry for herself. Instead, she found a way to stay physically and mentally active. Her promise to God was to devote much of her time to helping other stroke survivors. Gail’s morning routine starts with applying her leg brace which helps flex her left foot and keeps from hyper-extending her left knee. This allows her to walk with the assistance of a cane. After dressing (which may take

some time), Gail prepares her own breakfast before she leaves home to exercise or volunteer. On the weekends, Gail sings with a group of ladies from approximately 6 different churches. They come together to sing praises to God and encourage one another in their faith. In March, Gail had her 1st cycling trip. She said that it was a great experience and a beautiful day. How amazing is that? I am honored to know Gail Parker, and I hope you have the opportunity to meet the lady who never leaves home without a SMILE. She is a true survivor in every sense of the word. Whether you are an entrepreneur, leadership or management position, learning to embrace conflict and “Dealing with the Difficult” will be key to your success.
