Congratulations to our 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year, Steven Kearley, and our Support Person of the Year, Geneva Johnson. Both of these individuals are special, and deserving of this honor. A big thank-you to Jan Smith and her team, for making our Parenting Day a huge success. Thanks also to the parents who attended our event. We appreciate our parents. Another big thanks to Jan Smith for making our Red Ribbon Week Activities so much fun and such a big success. We thank Nancy Vansant and her team for planning such a wonderful Fall Festival. Thanks to our Student Council, and their sponsors, for representing us in the Homecoming Parade. Please remember that November 11th is Veteran’s Day Holiday. Thank you to Mrs. Howell, Ms. Lespi, Mrs. Park, and Mrs. Bates for planning our annual Veteran’s Day Program. Thanksgiving Holidays are November 23rd – 25th. As you can see, Elvin Hill School enriches the student’s lives with many wonderful opportunities in a caring environment. We are thankful to have such a great school, staff, and supporting community.
Mark your calendars! The Cornerstone Christian School annual Shoot, Scoot, and Serve event is coming! November 14th, at beautiful Selwood Farms, the school will host a clay shoot. Simultaneously, the elementary students will participate in a fall festival event and prayer walk on campus, while grades 7-12 will head out into the community to participate in service events at the Spirit of Hope Youth Ranch and several other venues. COLUMBIANA MIDDLE school CMS Seventh grade student Merritt Harmon won first place for Artwork/Media in the “Tell the World What it Means to be Gifted” contest sponsored by the state gifted association. Congratulations to Rhonda Mack for being selected CMS Teacher of the year. Ms. Mack goes above and beyond to provide her students with plenty of opportunities to learn. Additionally, she is Beta Club sponsor. Congratulations to Maite Miller for being named the Bravo! Teacher of the Month. Ms. Miller does excellent work with the school’s Continuing School Improvement plan, and she is a valuable resource to other teachers.
November’s Drug Free Message Talk to your children every day to set clear expectations about alcohol, tobacco and drug use. Make sure you set consequences for breaking the rules and follow through if a problem occurs. For more information, please visit www. shelbycountydrugfreecoalition.org. The Shelby County Drug Free Coalition provides the drug free message each month. The Coalition is a program of Family Connection made up of volunteers who are concerned about and want to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among our youth. Representatives from law enforcement, health agencies, businesses, church and civic groups and Shelby County Schools are part of the Coalition.

shelby county high school The Shelby County High School Marching Band, better known as “The Pride of Shelby County,” competed in the Lake Martin Invitational on October 1, 2011. “The Pride” received the following awards along with the highest overall score for the day. The awards included all superior ratings (1), best band, best drum major, and best dance line in Class 4. Best overall drum major, best overall marching score, best overall music score, best overall woodwind section, and best soloist of the day. A total of 17 bands participated in the competition. Congratulations on a job well done!

3rd Annual Artist Market Saturday, December 3, 2011, 9am – 3pm
Over twenty artists will gather at the Shelby County Arts Council, 104 Mildred Street, Columbiana, Alabama, for our 3rd Annual Artist Market. The artist, all members of the Shelby County Arts Council, will gather to offer their one-of -a- kind art just in time for holiday shopping. This year’s artists will feature pottery, jewelry, watercolors, oil paintings, acrylic paintings, clothing accessories and culinary arts. The market will also feature a silent auction with all items donated by participating artists. Proceeds from the auction benefit the ongoing efforts of the Shelby County Arts Council to support, nurture and promote the arts and cultural opportunities in Shelby County, Alabama. Make plans to join us on the market’s opening day, Saturday, December 3, 2011, from 9am -3 pm. Many of the artists will have their items available for purchase during the month of December at the Shelby County Arts Council gallery. AUTUMN CAREGIVING TIP
As the trees around us explode in vibrant colors, we are reminded that the seasons are changing. The change is gradual at first and we often try to pretend things are just the same as they were in the previous season. Terms like “Indian Summer” often make sentiments like this more palatable. But seasons do change, and even Indian Summer gives way to cooler temperatures for longer periods of time. Finally, we give in and admit that winter is upon us. Our lives are much like this. Changes can invade our lives, our routine, everything we deem precious and untouchable. At first we can pretend they are not really there, focus in other directions, and postpone our perceptions. But inevitably, as we all have experienced, the time comes when we have to admit certain changes have taken place. Acceptance gives way to new perspectives and often we find ourselves adjusting in ways we had not envisioned. As autumn continues to lead us to winter, remember that we will weather the change together with the help of family and friends. In 2002 a Pelham based business named Go Wireless decided that it was time to expand into a new market. After considering several potential areas to locate, owner Mark Frey decided to open a new Nextel office in Columbiana. “I had only been to Columbiana once before when I was on a class field trip with Coosa Valley Academy.” After opening the office in 2002, I really fell in love with Columbiana and all of the people. In 2003 Mark and his wife Mandy purchased a historical home downtown and have restored it. “When we opened up our office in 2002, we had 4 phones to choose from.” Now, Go Wireless offers over 60 different phones including the new iPhone 4s, Android, Blackberry, and a $20 unlimited home phone. In addition they provide wireless internet, laptop computers and tablets with built in internet. “We started out selling phones but the phones today are more like portable computers than they are phones.” Wireless internet has become a big part of
our business and over the last few years, we have seen a real need to help customers with their computer needs. Go Wireless has just brought in a team member with extensive computer networking experience. Daniel Key is a Columbiana resident with over 10 years of network experience that has joined forces with Go Wireless. Mr. Frey explained, “As a Systems Administrator and IT Director, Daniel has supported up to 300 users in multiple offices. His experience and expertise makes him a perfect fit for our company’s support of the ever growing computer needs for Columbiana and Shelby County.” Sara Bailey has been with Go Wireless for 4 years and is really the glue that holds our office together. “Customers look to me for an answer about their new phone and all too often, I look to Sara to help us all to get up to speed on a new phone. John McDaniel makes up the remainder of our team and helps with activations, warranty claims, and our prepaid service. We have an
awesome team here and I have the utmost confidence in them. As a Christian based company, we truly want to make a difference in our community. Go Wireless has built a reputation of going above and beyond to help their customers. Instead of looking at customers as another dollar sign, our goal is to build relationships with the people. “God has really blessed our business. Customers can tell when you go the extra mile and they will tell their friends and family when you take care of them.” “There is just something awesome about living and working in a close knit community like Columbiana. It normally takes me 20 minutes to pick up a gallon of milk at “The Pig” because I know half of the people that I see.” In this fast paced hustle and bustle world we live in where Facebook and text messages have taken the place of actual relationships with our neighbor, it’s nice to get back to the basics and spend some time talking with friends face to face, and enjoying small town living.
