T
he Montevallo community has developed a reputation for producing an athletic freak of nature on the gridiron every few years over the past two decades. Montevallo High School senior Korey Cunningham is next in line. The mammoth 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end and defensive lineman features the incredible speed and giant hands that will remind Bulldog faithful of the days players like Shontua Ray, Dre Fulgham and Lawrence Lilly roamed the sidelines at Richard Gilliam Field at Theron Fisher Stadium. The aforementioned players migrated from Montevallo to the Southeastern Conference. Cunningham may be next. The soft-spoken giant has already drawn college football scholarship offers from the University of Southern Mississippi and UAB, with SEC schools Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss showing plenty of interest in the tight end prospect. Cunningham will have several mentors to lean on during the recruiting process, including Lilly, his God-brother who went on to play at Ole Miss. Lilly is now an assistant coach at Montevallo. “I grew up with (Lilly),” Cunningham said. “He was there the day I was born. He’s one of my biggest fans. He always tells me, ‘don’t be satisfied.’” Cunningham also relies on advice from first-year Montevallo head coach Andrew Zow, a former quarterback at the University of Alabama. Zow knows it’s easy for a heavily recruited high school player to get a big head, but Cunningham said his head coach has helped him keep things in perspective. “‘Do what you do’ and ‘don’t try to do what everybody else tells you to do,’” is sage advice Cunningham said he’s picked up from Zow.
Korey Cunningham Cunningham said Zow has already made a huge impact before coaching his first game at Montevallo. Interest in playing football is on the rise thanks to his new head coach, Cunningham said. “It’s been really nice,” Cunningham said. “I’ve been playing here since eighth grade, and I can already see the change.” While he’s thankful for Zow’s guidance, Cunningham, who said he’s one of only two Auburn fans in his family, does partake in some good natured ribbing with the former Crimson Tide standout in team practice sessions. “I mess with him all of the time,” Cunningham said. Cunningham said he tries to model his game after a pair of current SEC standouts in Alabama tight end Michael Williams and Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen. The vocal leader of the Bulldogs tries to pattern his leadership role after the college players. “I just love the way they get after it,” Cunningham said. “They both bring a lot of energy. I try to do the same here.” Cunningham hopes to join the duo in the SEC following his senior season. The Montevallo standout shined in
a football camp with the Tigers this summer and hopes an offer from Auburn is in the mail soon. He’s drawn a lot of interest from the Crimson Tide, as well. Cunningham will get more opportunities to showcase his hands and speed as a playmaker by playing primarily at tight end this season, which he believes is key to his collegiate future. Due to his size, Cunningham spent a lot of time helping out the offensive line as an extra blocker a year ago. “To be able to show my talent is really nice,” Cunningham said. More important than sharpening his individual skills is helping the team win, Cunningham said. The senior believes his team has what it takes to finish the season in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship game. “We want to play hard and win a lot of games,” Cunningham said. “We want to go win a state championship.” Zow has made it clear to Cunningham the burden is on him to make it happen. “He understands his role,” Zow said. “He’s our leader. He’s the guy we need in the fourth quarter.” 2012 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

S
pain Park High School senior Jacob Chaffin has had the benefit of playing under the radar the past two seasons. Chaffin has exceeded expectations ever since his sophomore season, where he broke into the Spain Park lineup as a starting tackle on the defensive line. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound tackle doesn’t have that same luxury entering the 2012 season. The University of South Alabama verbal commitment has a target on his back as a team captain and defensive leader for the Jaguars. “It’s my senior year,” Chaffin said. “I’ve got to be a leader. I’ve got to finish strong.” Chaffin returns to anchor a front seven that could be the cornerstone of one of the best defensive groups in school history, which is high praise in comparison to the 2007 defense that helped lead Spain Park to its first ever appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A championship game. Chaffin, wearing the same uniform and playing the same position as past Spain Park standouts William Green and Jeremiah Jackson, understands the burden placed on his shoulders following in the footsteps of Southeastern Conference signees. Chaffin also credited Manny Cooper, a former Spain Park standout who currently plays college football at Virginia Military Institute, for helping him mature during his high school career. “He was like a brother to me,” Chaffin said. “He taught me everything I know.” Chaffin said he hopes to be an example for those younger players coming up behind him. The Jaguars have several young players who look

jacob Chaffin up to Chaffin the same way he relied on former Spain Park standouts for advice. “It’s a lot to live up to,” Chaffin said. “I’ve got to teach the kids younger than me. I’m trying to be a good example for the kids below me.” Chaffin, who earned a reputation for his toughness while moving into the starting lineup as a fresh-faced sophomore, also said he looks up to Detroit Lions’ defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh as his model on the gridiron. “(Suh) is a great player,” Chaffin said. “If you’re a great defensive lineman, you’ve got to be a little dirty. He plays hard every snap.” The Jaguars rely on Chaffin’s imposing presence in the middle of the defensive line to put pressure on opposing offensive lineman, which helps senior linebackers Je’Niah Jackson and Jacob Wolkow find their way into the backfield. Spain Park coach Chip Lindsey is relying on Chaffin to bring the same level of intensity on the defensive side of the ball he’s come to expect from his senior standout. “He’s a guy who plays with an extremely high motor,” Lindsey said.
“He’s passionate and energetic. He’s one of our leaders on defense.” Chaffin played a key role in helping the Jaguars reach the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs the past two years. He’s hungry for more postseason success during the final year of his high school career. Chaffin has had this season marked on his calendar since his sophomore season, which saw a youthful Spain Park defense with several sophomores get its feet wet against some of the top teams in the state. Chaffin said he expects the growing pains of the past few years to be an asset to the defensive unit this season. “This year,” Chaffin said, “we know what we have to do.” Chaffin put an end to the recruiting process before the start of his senior season. The South Alabama commitment said he’s relieved to have his college decision out of the way before fall practice begins. The Jaguars’ defensive leader has high expectations for his team this fall. “Most definitely, recruiting is over for me,” Chaffin said. “I want to win a state championship. That’s what I’m focused on.”

F
ormer Pelham High School football standout Jake Holland spent the majority of his first two seasons at Auburn University in a secondary role, stepping in at times to give the Tigers’ starting linebackers a rest. Holland knew that would be the plan during his freshman season in 2010 on a veteran defensive unit. However, the former Panther expected to play a much bigger role a year ago before bumps and bruises kept him from making the impact he hoped for on a youthful defense. Aggravating injuries that held him back are now in the past for Holland, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior who is penciled in as the Tigers’ starting middle linebacker in the season opener Sept. 1 against Clemson University at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. “I’ve felt pretty much 100 percent,” Holland said. “My ankles are better. My wrist is better. I’m ready to go.” Holland enters his third season on the Plains as a veteran among the Tigers’ defensive personnel, but spring practice and workouts leading up to the season have had a fresh feeling with a new position coach and defensive coordinator. Holland said new linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen, who moved over after coaching Auburn safeties the past three seasons, and new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who returned to college football following a short stint in the National Football League, put a new system in place with new responsibilities for the middle linebacker.
jake holland “It’s a lot different,” Holland said. “Everything is organized. Everybody is still learning, and we’re getting better.” Holland said he has grown close to Thigpen, who played a key role as the Tigers’ lead recruiter in Auburn’s pursuit of him as a top prospect in the Class of 2010. Holland, who played in the Under Armour All-American game following his high school career, was sought after by several of the top college football programs in the country after finishing with 153 tackles, including 16 tackles for a loss, three fumble recoveries and three interceptions as a senior. “I love ‘Thig,’” Holland said. “We have a personal relationship. He’s a great coach, and he’s a great teacher, as well. I’ve learned a lot from him.” Holland said VanGorder, who spent the past four years as the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive coordinator, has brought a renewed energy to the Auburn defense. “He’s really intense,” Holland said. “I like that. It gets us going.” Holland totaled 12 tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack in
his freshman season in 2010, which ended with the Pelham product seeing playing time in the Tigers’ 22-19 win over Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game. Holland played in 12 games, including six starts, as a sophomore in 2011, where he racked up 43 tackles, including three for a loss. Holland also finished with two interceptions and four quarterback hurries for the Tigers, who finished with a 8-5 record. Holland recorded two tackles and an interception in Auburn’s 43-24 win over Virginia in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Holland has high expectations for his junior season, where he will serve as the quarterback of the Tigers’ defensive unit. Holland will need to provide leadership, which will require him to be more vocal on the playing field than he was in the defensive plans utilized by former defensive coordinator Ted Roof. “There’s actually even more communication,” Holland said, “presnap and post-snap. There’s a lot of communication going on.” 2012 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Jackets’ starting quarterback. The diminutive quarterback is shifty and hard for defenders to track down once he gets into the open field. Sophomore Michael Gilham saw spot duty a year ago and returns as Johnson’s backup.
Running backs Vincent will feature an inexperienced backfield, but junior Rodney Groce did see plenty of playing time as a backup last season. Senior Jamichael Chapman and junior Ryan Kelow are moving into the backfield from wide receiver to provide depth behind Groce.
Wide receivers Senior Anterio Rogers is a rising star
and will be Johnson’s favorite target in the passing game. The Yellow Jackets will need a few fresh faces to make an impact at wide receiver. Juniors Emanuel Hale and Austin Young move into the spotlight this season. Sophomores Delvechio Hamilton and Quartez Walker will also see playing time.
Offensive line The return of a few players who gained valuable experience last season will help the transition in the running game. Seniors Chase Howard and Drae Dates, along with junior Chris Kelley, will anchor the offensive line. Juniors Bryce O’Steen, Jay Hamilton and Austin Daugherty, along with

sophomore Anthony Roberson, will fill in the gaps.
Defensive line Vincent will rely on its group of interior linemen on both sides of the ball. Seniors Chase Howard and Drae Dates are the most experienced players in the group. Junior Chris Kelley will also be a key player, along with juniors Jay Hamilton and Austin Daugherty.
Senior Anterio Rogers and sophomore Jace Green are returning starters in the defensive backfield. The duo was a pivotal part of a group that helped stymie opposing wide receivers. Senior Jamichael Chapman, along with juniors Michael Gilham and Emanuel Hale, will likely play a big role in the defensive backfield.
Special teams Senior Damauntey Johnson and junior Michael Gilham are in the running to handle the team’s punting and kicking duties, when the Yellow Jackets choose to kick the ball.

Fellow senior Brandon Lutz, along with freshmen Ty Evens and Hunter Nabors, will serve as backups.
Running backs Montevallo is rebuilding in the backfield this season. Senior Ronezz Stevens, who is transferring back into the program, and junior Lance Boothe, who saw time as a backup a year ago, will need to step up and provide a
rushing threat for the Bulldogs. Senior Chris McKenzie and junior Quandarius Jackson will also play a key role.
Wide receivers Senior Korey Cunningham will be able to showcase his wide range of playmaking skills in Zow’s offensive system. The new coach plans to make the mammoth tight end the focus of the Bulldogs’ attack. Fellow seniors Demetrouse Conwell, Tre McClendon, Key Bailey, Artez Farrell, Landon Goodwin, Bobo McCary and Jesse Deerman, along with junior Aaron Terrill, will also see plenty of passes thrown their way.

Running backs Sam Adams, a senior, was also a new face in the backfield a year ago, but he eventually became a go-to option as a rusher and a receiver. Sophomore Shakeith Tyes returns after seeing a few carries and will provide depth, along with junior Daillion Kennedy.
Wide receivers Junior Ronnie Clark, one of the top athletes nationally in his class, will be Reneau’s go-to option at wide receiver this season. helby County will see plenty of changes under first-year coach Brent Smith. The Wildcats will move from a power rushing attack to a spread offense, which will allow Shelby County to utilize its passing game more often. Several veterans at the line of scrimmage will help provide stability as the skill players implement a few changes, which has Smith optimistic about slipping into the playoffs.

Running backs Junior Marterius McGregor is a beast in the backfield after benefitting from several offseasons in the Wildcats’ weight room. McGregor will receive most of the carries. Senior Brandon Shields, junior Justin Webber and sophomore Auston Tolleson will need to provide depth behind McGregor.
Wide receivers Seniors Cornelius Gosa and Allen Grindle, along with juniors Austin Rogers, Tyrin Johnson and Nick Ray,
form a mostly unproven group of wide receivers. After watching the running backs enjoy the spotlight the past few seasons, the Wildcats’ receivers will play a much bigger role in the offense under Smith.
Offensive line The Wildcats will feature an experienced group up front with the return of seniors Jacob Oliver, Joey Guthrie, Jordan Tucker, Dylan Grantham and David Brown. The group saw extensive playing time a year ago. Juniors Tristian Chandler and Matt Youngblood will also be asked to contribute up front this season.

he transition to the largest classification in the state could be a difficult one for Chelsea, the smallest school in its new class. However, the Hornets feature a few talented playmakers on offense who could make life difficult for opposing defenses. Coach Wade Waldrop will need plenty of senior leadership and contributions from several newcomers for his team to have a chance at a playoff bid this season.
Quarterbacks Junior Trent Hagin will step into the starting role after seeing several snaps a year ago as a backup for the Hornets.

Hagin will have big shoes to fill as the signal caller at Chelsea. Sophomore David Mock will also see several snaps behind center when Hagin needs a rest. Freshman Chase Wilson will provide depth.
Running backs Chelsea returns senior Julius McCall in the backfield. McCall, who has verbally to play college football at UAB, is known for his speed and is a dangerous threat on the edge. Junior Aki Coles saw extensive playing time a year ago. Senior Nick Kidd and freshman A.J. Jones will also see playing time this year.
Wide receivers Seniors Cooper Page, J.R. Appling , Adam
Holliday and Austin Washington who moved from the backfield, will be Hagin’s top targets at wide receiver this season. Senior tight end Keelan Gregg will also be a huge weapon for the Hornets. Seniors Josh Ivy and Kody Chambers, along with junior Hunter Howard and sophomore Austin Chadwick, will provide depth.
Offensive line The Hornets are in good shape up front with the return of several key players on the offensive line. Seniors Darian Golden and Jonathan Rush are returning starters. Fellow senior Austin Bratton, along with juniors James Calhoun, Shane Sibert and Bakari Stanford and sophomores Casey Foshee and Daniel Fraunfelder, will also play key roles this season.

First-year coach Cris Bell hopes the transition is a smooth one for a program that has won a combined two region games in the past two seasons. Bell is rebuilding the program from the ground up this season.
Quarterbacks Senior Jake Adams returns as the Eagles’ starting quarterback after taking control of the offense in the middle of the season a year ago. taking over as the starter early last season. Adams will be expected to provide leadership in his first full season behind center. Junior Devon Mines and sophomore Hunter Stovall, who shined on the baseball diamond in the spring, will serve as backups.
Running backs The Panthers will rely heavily on their running game, which is a good plan considering the return of senior rushers Jacob Nichols and Eli Beall and junior Tyler Brasfield, who each had spectacular moments a year ago. Senior Dalton Sparks and sophomores
Tyler White and Chris Shiflett will each provide depth.
Wide receivers A pair of seniors, Kenny Meadows and Fletcher Johnson, will be among Adams’ favorite targets this season. Senior Mauricio Sandovall, Dee Reed, Mason Whitman and Jonathan Cunningham, along with junior Robert Hayes, will also play key roles in the passing game. The remaining wide receivers, which include juniors Tyler Wilburn, Lavell Wynn and Ben Smith, are relatively inexperienced.

Linebackers
Pelham returns several players who saw plenty of playing time up front last season, including seniors Gardner Fish, Daniel Amador, Blane Eddins and Josh Martin. The quartet will likely begin the season as starters, with several other seniors in C.J. Garner, Grant Clayton, Nicholas Farren, Jesus Miranda, Josh Barkley and Tyler Martin battling for a starting spot.
Defensive line Senior Chism Marauko returns at defensive end and will provide leadership on the front line of defense for the Panthers. Seniors Xavier Wright,
The Panthers will be retooling at linebacker with the graduation of key players from last season. Seniors Chris Coats and Michael Boyd gained valuable experience a year ago and will need to provide leadership for a youthful group, which will also include junior Christian Davis and a host of sophomores.
Secondary Pelham is in good shape in the defensive backfield with two returning starters in seniors Antonio London and Fletcher Johnson. Seniors Wil Holsomback and Jamie Mathis will likely battle for the remaining starting positions with juniors Joshua Brasher, Blake Dunaway and Conner Galloway.

riday night games against region rivals Hoover, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook are a thing of the past for Spain Park, which moves into a new region in coach Chip Lindsey’s second season at the helm. The competition won’t get much easier with a tough slate of region games, which includes Prattville, but the Jaguars enter the season as one of the favorites in its new region.
Quarterbacks Senior Nick Mullens enters his third season as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback. The signal caller has had his moments, but he’s looking to put it all together in his final season. Junior Mickey Forrest, who transferred from
42

Oak Mountain in the offseason, will serve as Mullen’s primary backup. Forrest began last season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback before injuries cut his season short.
Running backs Senior Kevron McMillan, who sat out spring practice with an injury, will lead a group of fresh-faced running backs this season. McMillan is the most experienced running back returning. Newcomer Jourdan Walker, a junior, along with fellow junior Otis Harris and freshman Wade Streeter, will also see plenty of carries.
Wide receivers The strongest unit on the offensive side of the ball is at wide receiver, where the Jaguars return three receivers who
played a pivotal role last season. The group is led by senior Drake Grisham, a Clemson University commitment. Fellow seniors Cade Hoffman and M.J. Brown are also returning at the position, along with seniors Ben Olinger, Ben Holcombe, Donzle Wilson-Hunt, Joey Stuckey and Cas Holley.
Offensive line Spain Park will need some newcomers to step up after losing three starters on the offensive line from last season. Senior Bryant Novick leads the group as a returning starter. Junior Caleb Plaisted is set at right tackle. Juniors Jay Douglas and Nikolas Kassouf and senior Jordan Brook will likely play key roles. Senior Justin Kane and sophomores Josh Winchester and Zach Williams will provide depth.
jacob Chaffin
AHSAA 6A, REGION 4 2011: 5-6 (4-3)
E.J. Marino will also play key roles.
Secondary
Defensive line The defensive line will be led by senior defensive tackle Jacob Chaffin, a South Alabama commitment. Junior Devin Pughsley will line up at the other tackle position after getting his feet wet at the position as a sophomore. Senior Bryant Williams, a returning starter, and junior Will Murray will bookend the defensive line. Junior Ian Kirkpatrick and sophomore Chad Abner, along with freshman Jonah Tibbs, will provide depth up front.
The front seven will need to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks to give a group of four brand new starters in the secondary a chance to grow up early in the season. Safeties Zac Newton, a senior, and Austin Haight, a junior, will join senior Jalon Hollie and sophomore A.J. Smiley, as likely starters. Seniors Hank King and Patrick Scott, along with sophomores Jordan Dukes and Rondaius Johnson, will be expected to provide depth.
Special teams Spain Park will open the season with a new placekicker, with senior Hudson Carr and junior Thomas Taylor battling to be the starter. Senior John Pizzatola will take over as the team’s punter.

he Warriors are hoping a move to a new region pays off with a few extra victories after struggling the past few years. First-year coach Michael Montgomery, a former assistant coach, has given the program a boost. The road to the playoffs may be a little easier. However, Montgomery needs a large, but inexperienced, senior class to make an impact in the new region this season.

2012 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL
Quarterbacks Senior Trey Matherson is back under center with a full season of starting experience under his belt. Matherson won’t be asked to carry a heavy burden. He just needs to manage the offense with a steady hand. Sophomore Zach Brammer will likely see a few snaps for a change of pace.
Running backs The Warriors feature a potent threeheaded rushing attack in seniors Devonte Smith and Tedarius King, along with junior Dee Tolbert. Tolbert was a
workhorse for Thompson last season. Smith and King have plenty of potential, which means more rest for Tolbert and trouble for opposing defenses. Senior Jacob Crawford will provide depth.
Wide receivers Senior Hayden Franklin is returning after playing a key role in the Warriors’ passing attack a year ago. Thompson will need a few inexperienced receivers to step up, including seniors Colby Yessick, Jonathon Berry and Jesse Handlon, along with juniors Mykail Davis and Eric Reeves.

Jackson, Madison Littrell, Deandre Gamble and John Thompson will each play key roles. T.J. Rayam is only a freshman, but he’ll be in the mix as well.
Linebackers
Offensive line Thompson is in good shape up front with the return of brothers Josh Peoples and John Peoples, a pair of mammoth senior offensive linemen. The siblings will provide leadership along with fellow seniors Joseph Turek, Alex Bartko and Kody Meyers. Junior Skylar Slagle will also be in the mix for playing time.
Defensive line The Warriors are in good shape with a bunch of seniors in the mix for playing time on the defensive line. Seniors Ryan Morrow, Anthony Barganier, Josh
Thompson is known for producing great linebackers and this season isn’t any different with the return of seniors Hunter Pinneo and Myles Rogers. Seniors Dalton Shaw and Brent Childree and juniors Tony Pendleton and Jake Rakestraw will also be in the mix for playing time. Sophomore Marcus Lewis oozes potential.
Secondary A few veterans return for the Warriors in the defensive backfield in seniors Hunter Black, Cornell King, Austin Bates, Louis Munoz, Jaylon Caffee and Shyeim Cooper. The group of six seniors will need to provide leadership as experienced veterans with several youthful players in the mix for playing time.

oosa Valley enters the season with a first-year coach and a bunch of newcomers, which is the same storyline entering last season on the heels of a state championship in 2010. Arlton Hudson, a veteran coach who has more than two decades of head coaching experience, will try to help the program get back into the playoffs in his first season at the helm.
Quarterbacks Senior Bradley Harvell, a newcomer at Coosa Valley who transferred from Pell

City, will take over the offense in his first season with the team. The Rebels’ signal caller is looking to make the most of his final season as a high school quarterback. Sophomore Bradley Carroll will provide depth behind Harvell.
Running backs The Rebels will rely heavily on senior Adam McCranie, who shined at both running back and wide receiver a year ago. McCranie will likely spend most of his time in the backfield this season. Fellow senior Landon Floyd will also get his fair share of carries this season. Seniors Alex Nelson and Andrew Nelson will also play key roles in the backfield.
Wide receivers Senior Tyler Hickman is poised to become Harvell’s favorite target in his first season behind center. Hickman is a versatile playmaker who is dangerous after the catch. Niko Teofilo and Grant Lovelady, a pair of juniors, and sophomores Michael Cain and Rowe Frederick will also help out at wide receiver.
Offensive line The Rebels are in good shape up front with the return of several experienced offensive lineman, including seniors Travis Clinkscales, Joe Miller, Kyle Glover, Kyle Maxwell and Andrew

Linebackers Senior Landon Floyd is back after serving as one of the top tacklers on the defensive unit last season. Fellow senior Adam McCranie will join Floyd, but the Rebels are still searching for depth at the position. Secondary

Defensive line Interior lineman at Coosa Valley will play on both sides of the ball this season. Seniors Travis Clinkscales, Joe Miller, Kyle Glover, Kyle Maxwell and Andrew McLain return with at least one year of experience under their respective belts. Sophomores J.T. Tyler Hickman, a senior, will provide leadership in the defensive backfield as a returning starter. i n g w o o d Christian is one of the few teams that won’t face many changes heading into the upcoming season, with the Lions remaining in their classification and region in coach Bob Spurgeon’s second season at the helm. After flirting with a playoff berth the past two seasons, the Lions hope to finally break through with a veteran quarterback and talented playmakers returning.
Quarterbacks Junior Gavin Sumrall, entering his second season as the Lions’ starting quarterback, gained valuable experience behind center a year ago. Sumrall has matured in the offseason

and has a complete understanding of the Lions’ offensive system heading into year two as the starter. Gavin’s younger brother, sophomore Gage Sumrall, will serve as his backup, along with junior wide receiver Tyler Harrell.
Running backs Junior Micah Wallace leads the group of Kingwood Christian running backs at the H-back position. Several other inexperienced players will have key roles in the backfield, including senior Aron Walters, junior Jonathan Faulkner, sophomore Rivers Chamblee and freshmen Charles White and Carlos Stevens.
Wide receiver The Lions have several veterans returning at wide receiver, including
junior Montez Haynes, who was one of Kingwood Christian’s most dangerous threats a year ago. Senior Trent Furlow and junior Tyler Harrell are back after seeing playing time last season. Junior Austin Dowdy will be counted on as a slot receiver. Junior Tyler Mills, who will also see time on the offensive line, will play at tight end on occasion.
Offensive line Kingwood Christian will feature a remodeled offensive line after the graduation of five seniors from last year’s squad. Senior tackle Jacob Bussey, a proven veteran, will anchor the group from his tackle position. Junior Jake Allen will line up at center, while senior Taylor Miller and junior Tyler Mills will also play a key role up front. Spurgeon is still searching for a few

Defensive line The Lions will also feature a youthful group of defensive lineman, with two graduated seniors moving on to college football. Junior Tyler Mills will provide leadership as a returning starter at defensive end. Senior Taylor Miller and junior Jake Allen will also play key roles, while junior Tyler Harrell may also see time on the defensive front. Harrell can also help out at linebacker and in the secondary.
Junior Micah Wallace and freshman Kyle Harrell will likely begin the season as the starting cornerbacks for the Lions. Freshman Charles White and junior Austin Dowdy will need to step at safety. The Lions are still searching for backups in the secondary.
