Puppy Love Find treats for you and your pets The term “dog lover” probably isn’t strong enough for me. My two pooches, Sprinkles and Teddyoso, are like my (spoiled) children and go everywhere with me. It was on one of our excursions where we found Allison WhitfieldSmith’s Fetch, a treat truck for dogs. She offers a variety of goodies including decorated bones, cupcakes, smoothies and cookies. It didn’t take long for my pups to become addicted to her ice cream — especially the maple bacon flavor. She brings the truck to local dog parks, events and private parties. Fetch is the perfect solution for people like me who want to treat their dogs to something special. Read more about Fetch on page 16. And when you want to treat yourself, The Birmingham Candy Company has you covered. This Hoover business bakes homemade goodies like southern pralines, pecan paws, truffles and candy apples. These mouth-watering desserts

are sure to bring out the child in you. And the couple who makes the candy, Wayne and Cassie Bolden, are just as sweet. Check out this company on page 42 — just be prepared for your sweet tooth to kick in. Another way to pamper yourself is with a new outfit or accessory, and Angelia Darty’s Bohemian Bliss boutique is the one-stop shop for just that. She recently opened the storefront to offer women affordable, yet stylish, pieces. I met Darty at the Hoover High School Christmas Bazaar last year, and her passion for fashion and people was definitely evident. She’s the perfect person to help you pick out an outfit or even a gift. Read her story starting on page 30. The best treat for me is being able to meet local people, like everyone in this issue, who are making a difference in

the community. If you know of a person or business we should feature — or just want to let us know how we’re doing — email or message me on social media. n

Spicing up lunch Hoover nutrition managers learn from professional chef

orget your assumptions about school lunch. With choices from Asian-inspired dishes to home-style meals, the Hoover City Schools lunch menu looks more gourmet than cafeteria. Each day, the HCS Child Nutrition Program staff works hard to create tasty and nutritious meals for the school system’s nearly 14,000 students. And making school lunch is no easy task. The job requires preparing food for a large number of students from a menu that appeals to a wide range of tastes, all while adhering to strict federal

nutrition regulations. “Child Nutrition Programs are regulated programs,” says HCS Director of Child Nutrition Melinda Bonner. “Calories, fat, sodium, the components we use, they all have to meet (federal requirements).” Children don’t always like to eat what’s good for them, so the CNP staff often thinks outside of the box to create kid-approved and federal regulation-approved meals. On Jan. 28, Chef Garrett Berdan stopped by the CNP managers’ monthly meeting at Spain Park High School to demonstrate more ways to spice up school lunch. HCS won the free demonstration at a National School Nutrition Conference, Bonner explains. Berdan is a professional chef and registered

dietitian based in Oregon. He has experience in numerous facets of the culinary industry, but his specialty is K-12 nutrition. In 2011, he was honored by the White House as a Champion of Change for his work with school nutrition programs and the Chefs Move to Schools initiative. “Food can be as nutritious as possible, but who’s going to eat it if it doesn’t taste good?” Berdan asks. “With flavor...you can help build variety in your menus.” Berdan discussed a range of ingredients that can create a “craveable taste” without sacrificing nutrition. For example, Berdan suggested replacing salt with low-sodium soy sauce or a teriyaki glaze. “(You can) heighten the taste without

Recipe for Success The nutrition standard for school meals is constantly evolving to ensure students have access to healthier food options. Here’s a look at what all those guidelines include, according to the Hoover City Schools’ site: Milk must be 1 percent or nonfat, and all flavored milk must be nonfat. All grains offered must be whole grain-rich.

Schools are required to serve larger portions of fruits and vegetables, and students must take at least one fruit or vegetable serving per meal. Lunches must include dark green vegetables, orange/ red vegetables and legumes at least once a week. No more than 1/3 of the calories in the lunch should come from fat — less than 10 percent from saturated fat.

Berdan served a sweet and savory Asian chicken pizza, layered with preservative-free orange sauce and a touch of sriracha sauce; a fantastic “fried” rice mixed with fresh ginger and topped with an option of tofu or chicken; and sweet potatoes roasted with a reduced

The business just opened a new storefront in Hoover off of PAGE 12: Precision South Shades Crest Road and has another Tactical Arms Company specializes in weapons store in Crestview, Fla. “But what we’re really manufacturing and customization. He says he feels it’s true because that’s what drew him into the tactical weapons business in the first place. Carter was welcomed to the team by Lewis and his colleagues at Precision Tactical. “It was me meeting them that got me into it,” recalls Carter, a Hoover resident who graduated from Oak Mountain High School. “I spent some time with them down in Florida at the other store, and I knew I wanted to do more with them.” He also found he really liked tactical shooting. “It’s a way to relax, and when you get that right load and that perfect shot and beat your best friend at it, it’s a lot of fun,” Carter says. Now, he gets to welcome people into the Hoover location just like Lewis and others welcomed him in at the Florida one.

Precision Tactical in Hoover is already open for business, with its grand opening set for March 25-26. “We like to shoot, and we like to teach others to do what we do,” Carter says. “We do a lot of custom gun work — like your signature or initials engraved on it, or your choice of color.” Lewis says that’s what makes the company different. “We do sell guns out of the box like any other regular gun shop, but what sets us apart is that we can customize all of the weapons,” he says. “We build our own and modify our own.” The weapons cater to the tactical and accomplished shooter, but the shop welcomes newbies too, he says. “Our staff has a pretty extensive knowledge of everything, so we can help the experts all the way to the newest rookie shooter,” Lewis says. “Generally speaking, we can answer most questions confidently.” The source of that “pretty extensive knowledge” is the Precision Tactical staff ’s background — most have law enforcement or military experience, Lewis says. The company builds weapons for those groups, too. “We deal very closely with the Green Berets and law enforcement,” he says. Lewis, who spends half his time in Florida and half his time at the Hoover store, started — Ward Lewis Precision Tactical in Florida three years ago out of a love for the sport. “I’m a civilian pilot and business owner, but I’ve always been a gun enthusiast, so starting the company made sense for me,” he explains. After coming up to Alabama repeatedly to be involved in local competitions, he decided it was time to start the Hoover location. They’re working to set up contracts with some local law enforcement currently like the ones they have in Florida. The Hoover store also has some demo days set on the books for customers to try out weapons. It’s all meant to showcase what Precison Tactical does best — manufacturing. “We can get you just about anything you want and at a pretty competitive price,” Lewis says. “And the results and quality are undeniable.” Precision Tactical Arms Company is located at 3435 South Shades Crest Road. It’s open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit Ptarms.com. n

couldn’t talk myself out of.” With no dog treat trucks in the state, she began seriously looking into details in January of 2015, eventually buying the ice cream truck. And by last July, the Fetch dog treat truck was created. “For many, our dogs aren’t just pets: They are a part of the family,” she says. “People get themselves and their kids treats, and many want to do the same for their dogs.” She takes her truck to dog parks, local events and even private parties. She recently helped one lucky pooch, Pepper, celebrate her second birthday with a personalized cake, ice cream and other treats for the doggie guests. There was plenty of tail-wagging fun for the pets and their owners. There are different packages for private parties, including gift bags, a six-pack of Bowser Beer with the dog’s photos on it and a personalized cake. Pet owners can also order birthday cakes and have them hand delivered. Whitfield-Smith will also be bringing the Fetch truck to the Market at Pepper Place this year, which has led her to make some changes to her treats. Since she mainly offered treats from other sources like local bakeries in the beginning, she began creating recipes, baking and decorating the dog goodies herself (a requirement of Pepper Place). She offers cupcakes, Auburn- and Alabama-themed bones, cake pops, nonalcoholic Bowser Beer and ice cream, which is her most popular item. There are also grain-free options for pets with diet restrictions. “I want to offer quality products,” she says. “Although they are treats, they are healthy treats. I feel good about that.” She says her favorite part about running the treat truck business is meeting all of the dogs and their owners. “I see so many different kinds of dogs and personalities,” Whitfield-Smith says. “I enjoy talking with people, too. I can definitely relate to dog owners. It’s a

Their (un) adopted ministry reaches children who may not be adopted because of their age, country or other factors and equips them with life skills. Lifeline’s Christ-centered ministries work to show children and families the love of the Heavenly Father. “We’ve been greatly loved and adopted as children of God,” Yanko says. “It’s a beautiful picture bringing kids into the family because you’ve received so much.” And there’s a real need for their services. There are 153 million orphans in the world, and only about 0.5 percent of those are ever adopted, Yanko says. Last year, Lifeline completed 27 domestic and 308 international adoptions. Their international adoption services are in more than 16 countries. Couples who want to adopt can learn more about the process and options by attending informational meetings online and in-person

in Hoover. The average wait time for a domestic adoption is two to four years. “It’s an emotional thing for families to walk through,” she says. “It’s a journey, but it’s a beautiful journey.” Yanko says one of the main concerns couples have about the process is the cost of adoption. The price can be $25,000 or more, so Lifeline works with organizations that provide grants to help with that burden. “There are so many children who need families,” Yanko says. “If God has put that on couples’ hearts, they should ask if this is something the Lord might want to use to shape their family.” Lifeline is there for families throughout the process, providing support, information and encouragement. “The adoption journey doesn’t just start when you apply and finish when you’ve adopted,” Yanko explains. That’s why Lifeline provides counseling and other support preand post-adoption, as well. The Lifeline team also prays each morning for the families they work with. But Lifeline is about more than helping

children and their new families. They also minister to the birth mothers. “We are constantly trying to let women know they have an option to choose life,” Yanko says. “There’s hope in Christ and hope for the life they are carrying — whether they choose to parent or put their child up for adoption. We try to partner with crisis pregnancy centers, hospitals and other entities.” Lifeline supports expectant mothers throughout their journey and helps them understand the adoption process. They also offer counseling and continue to be there for them even after they deliver their babies. They also have a maternity home called Lifeline Village in Tuscaloosa available for them if they don’t have a good home to stay in during their pregnancies. “We are here for an eternal purpose,” Yanko says. “As long as the Lord allows us to continue to do this work, we will continue to

She held the grand opening for Bohemian Bliss on Feb. 12, which had a special meaning for Darty. That was her mother’s birthday, so the date seemed like the perfect time to launch the storefront since her mother passed away last October. While her customers can now come to the store, try on outfits, talk with Darty and just enjoy the atmosphere, they can still purchase items on her online store, which is run by her husband, Jon. The boutique carries a variety of pieces and styles that encompass the free-spirit mindset associated with being bohemian, she says. Like the store’s slogan says, it is “capturing the gypsy in you.” “I’m not scared to step outside of the box,” she says. “I want the store to be fashionable yet funky. The clothes and accessories are for women who want to stand out from the crowd.”

Bohemian Bliss carries clothing like pants, dresses and tops, along with shoes. There are also plus-size tops and bottoms. The boutique’s accessories include hats, bracelets, cuffs, earrings, necklaces, rings and handbags. Currently, her shoes are the most popular pieces, including Bella Marie faux suede booties, Sbicca Maestro and Sbicca Pitch. There are also several eclectic gift items including clutches, makeup erasers, bag charms and the Color Switch, which allows women to quickly switch between eye shadow colors on their brushes. She says she hopes her customers not only find unique pieces at the shop, but she also wants everything to be affordable. Besides the shoes, she says she tries to keep all of the pieces below $60 — making it possible for shoppers to come and get a full outfit for $100. “When I would go shopping, I just wanted

But Bohemian Bliss’s unique, free-spirit style isn’t the only thing that sets it apart. Darty’s dedication to customer service and her passion for building relationships will also

keep customers coming back. Her commitment to relationships is why she handwrites cards to every customer who purchases something from her online store. “I like customer interaction” Darty says. “I’m not a behind-the-scenes type of person. I just love helping people, — Angelia Darty like picking out outfits with them.” The boutique’s atmosphere is also one-of-akind, she adds. “It will look nothing like any store in Birmingham,” she says. “It’s so funky and fun.”

Maximize Options

Four ways to get the most from your urgent care

T

he opening of the St. Vincent’s Urgent Care center just off U.S. Highway 280 provides new options for area residents to receive nonemergency, walk-in care from St. Vincent’s Health System. Conceived as an after-hours center, this new addition to the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen campus is open 1 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Although urgent care has become a familiar concept to most area residents, many people don’t fully understand the best way to utilize these facilities. Here are four suggestions for maximizing urgent care usage:

hospital emergency room.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CARE

St. Vincent’s Urgent Care has been designed to address the concerns primary care doctors’ offices accommodate. Those might include respiratory-related infections, tummy troubles or minor injuries. Although doctors’ offices are ideal for such care, they aren’t always open. And by the time a patient recognizes their need and makes a call, the office may be booked. And while St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is designed to address immediate concerns, it will also provide access to the entire St. Vincent’s physicians’ network, connecting 1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLACE patients with chronic conditions to primary or specialty care physicians Some patients head to emergency who can help manage those concerns. rooms for sore throats, minor cuts 3. CHOOSE TO BE PREPARED that may need stitches and other minor injuries and illnesses that are best treated in a primary care office Prepared patients don’t necessarily or urgent care location after-hours. expect to need an urgent care facility, These patients will usually pay more but they know what to do if a need and wait longer for emergency room arises. Just as you already carry your treatment than they would have in a insurance card with you, if you walk-in urgent care facility. Of course, ask ahead about what your health if you suspect a threat to life or limb, insurance plan provides, you won’t be your destination should always be the surprised by what is covered, or not

covered, in an after-hours visit. Such prep not only shortens waits, but also offers more accurate information for physicians.

4. CHOOSE TO BE INFORMED As walk-in medical offices open on virtually every street corner, it’s important to know that not every immediate care facility is the same. St. Vincent’s Urgent Care is an extension of St. Vincent’s Health System. In view of that longstanding reputation, this facility not only includes certified laboratories and diagnostics capabilities, ranging from x-rays to EKG, but is also accredited by the Urgent Care Association of America, the industry’s trade association that evaluates scope of practice, patient safety and quality of care. St. Vincent’s Urgent Care on the One Nineteen campus is now open and located at 7191 Cahaba Valley Road, Suite 108. SMCS athletes sign letters of intent Shades Mountain Christian School congratulated Dylan Pausic and Harrison Boozer in signing letters of intent in 2016 National Signing Day. Dylan Pausic has accepted a scholarship from the University of South Alabama and will run cross country and track. Dylan is currently the state champion in ASHAA 1A/2A Cross Country and Indoor Track 1600 and 3200. He is an honors student with a 4.0 GPA. years, it was a sellout at about 250 guests. Fathers attending the dance for the first time were initiated with the “YMCA dance” tradition. As DJ Jerry Dichiara blasted the Village People’s well-known song, the newbies were

Bill to give rights to parents Alabama Rep. Matt Fridy (R-Montevallo) filed House Bill 112 Feb. 10, which would amend the Alabama Constitution to provide that parents have a fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education, care and custody of their children, if approved. Although that fundamental right is presently protected by U.S. Supreme Court decisions interpreting the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, the Alabama Constitution does not include an explicit provision relating to the fundamental rights of parents to raise their children without undue government interference. “As a father of five, I stand in unity with parents across the State of Alabama who believe that it is our fundamental, God-given right to raise our children without fear of

unwarranted government intrusion and interference,” Fridy says. “To that end, I think it’s critical to provide the citizens of Alabama the opportunity to declare that our Constitution must protect the rights of parents.” If House Bill 112 is enacted by the legislature and approved by a vote of the people, Alabama would join a growing list of states that have enshrined the fundamental rights of parents in their state laws, such as Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Virginia.

Ladies hear etiquette tips Members of the Greystone Ladies Club left their February luncheon with a better understanding of theatre etiquette and dining Martin etiquette in foreign countries. Kathie Martin, founder and president of The Etiquette School of Birmingham, gave the ladies tips on how to enjoy theatre outings while also respecting others and the performers. Martin’s tips covered punctuality, what to do if one is late arriving and when applause is appropriate. “Once the performance has begun, try to take a code of silence,” Martin says. “No running conversation.” The silence includes turning off cell phones, she adds. Regarding dining in other countries, Martin suggested studying a country’s customs prior to going and following them as closely as possible, especially when dining with one or more native residents. “Show courtesy to the country where you are,” Martin says. “Before going to a country, look up what their customs are.” She talked about the proper use of different utensils — chopsticks, for example — and how to approach a meal in which dishes are shared among all diners. Martin closed with a brief overview of times and traditions related to tea, particularly in England.

SMS donates for Kindness Week Simmons Middle School celebrated Kindness Week Feb. 1-5. While students at Simmons are always encouraged to be kind, this week is set aside each year to make students and teachers more intentional with their thoughts and actions. The school raised more than $2,200 in one day to help sponsor a child in the Magic Moments network who has a life-threatening illness. In this yearlong fundraiser, more than $5,000

has been raised to give one special child a “Magic Moment” to last a lifetime. In addition, more than 200 blankets and 750 jackets and coats were donated throughout the week by students to be distributed to area homeless shelters. Also, more than 1,000 cans were collected in a one-day canned food drive that helps to stock area food banks.

Scarlett Walker takes the stage again You may remember Scarlett Walker as Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen 2010 or as Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama 2012. Now a senior at the University of Alabama, the Oak Mountain High School graduate has taken her talent to the theatre as an actress. From Feb. 16-20, Walker took the stage alongside Broadway and other professional actors in the UA Theatre and Dance presentation of “The Countess of Storyville.” The musical is set in turn of the century New Orleans and is currently in development for Broadway. “This is definitely very hands on, it’s a hands-on experience,” says UA

Theatre and Dance Marketing and PA Manager Jamie Schor. The production gave current Alabama students a taste of life as a professional actor. Student auditions were held in April 2015. Students cast for the play were held to the same standards as the professional actors, spending hours practicing and rehearsing each day to perfect the performance. Walker plans to continue acting after graduation and has aspirations to perform on Broadway. Although she participated in both choir and dance through high school, Walker didn’t discover her love of theatre until college. April 2016 | Hoover’s Magazine •

Shades Mountain raises money to purchase school Shades Mountain Christian School launched a capital campaign in the spring of 2015 in an effort to raise funds for the purchase of Riverchase Middle School. Purchasing Riverchase Middle School and its adjoining property will provide a safe and secure facility to grow Shades Mountain’s academic environment and attract new families. With a goal of $1,050,000, the capital campaign — named “Our Legacy, Our Future” — will become the foundation for this exciting transition as Shades Mountain Christian School moves forward and embraces what is to come. To date, more than $700,000 has been gifted or pledged to the campaign. For the past 42 years, Shades

Mountain Christian School has shared space with Shades Mountain Independent Church. Four years ago, the school formed its own 501(c)(3) non-profit entity and completed a fiscal separation from the church. Since that

time, SMCS has been looking for space to move the school. In February 2015, the school signed a purchase agreement with the Pelham Board of Education to purchase Riverchase Middle School for $4.25 million.

Over $12,000 in 2015-2016 Lila Parks and Forks & Corks Scholarship Applications Available The Hoover Area Chamber’s 2016-2017 Lila Parks Scholarships, started in 1997, will be awarded in May of this year, with a total of $6,000.00 available. Applications are available in the Chamber office, or on the Chamber web site home page at www.hooverchamber.org. Lila Parks Scholarships will be restricted to public four-year colleges and universities located within the State of Alabama. Applications are to be turned in to the Chamber office by 4 p.m., April 22, 2016. Anyone wanting more information about these scholarships can call the Chamber at 988-5672. Students applying can be from any of the area schools, including all public and private schools, but must meet at least one of the criteria listed on the application. why I love Hoover

‘I love Hoover primarily because of the people.’

A

Kansas native, Dr. Richard Goertzen became the senior pastor at Shades Mountain Independent Church in January. Before coming to Hoover, he served on the staff at churches in Alabama, Louisiana, California and Kansas. In addition to preaching and teaching, Goertzen also enjoys writing and currently is developing a book. Goertzen and his wife, Kris, have been married for 32 years and have three children: Bethany, Sarah and Joshua.

Q: When did you know you wanted to enter the ministry? A: I knew early in high school that I wanted to enter the ministry. My father was a pastor. I thought the only way to have a fulfilling life as a Christian was to serve God fully.

Independent Church? A: Shades Mountain Independent Church has an incredible foundation. The members have such a great heart for God and for His Word, which is reflected in their love and grace toward others.

Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: My favorite part of my job is watching lives change through the work of the ministry of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

Q: What do you love about Hoover? A: I went to college at Southeastern Bible College here in Birmingham. I love Hoover primarily because of the people. Everyone is so kind and warm.

Q: What are you most excited about being at Shades Mountain
