Congratulations to our Ambassador of the Month, Bruce Koppenhoefer, Renaissance Enterprises. With a 40-year career that evolved from equipment engineer to product manager to marketing manager and now communications director, Bruce provides marketing communications services through his sole proprietorship, Renaissance Enterprises. In this capacity, he provides his clients with a single source for all their marketing communications needs, whether it be development of presentations or sales literature, newsletter implementation, ad design, or business writing. In addition to his volunteer activities as a Chamber Ambassador, Bruce also serves on the Board of the Arc of Shelby County and heads up Invent Alabama, an inventor support group. He and his wife have been married for 35 years and are full-time care givers for their special needs son who lives with them. Go & Grow Workshop - Finding and Keeping Great Talent We all know you’re only as good as the people you have on your team. So “Finding & Keeping Great Talent” is the most important skill a manager can develop. The workshop, facilitated by Michael Smith, TheGREAT theGOODandtheGONE, will help you grow your ability to attract the GREAT and keep them on your team. You’ll learn how to: • build a selection process • initiation process • create team bonding • set the right expectations for performance before you bring people on the payroll. The Go & Grow workshop will be held from 7:45AM until 1:30PM at the Greater
Shelby County Chamber of Commerce on June 18. Investment includes lunch, refreshments, workbook & action plan. Individual coaching available for participants’ implementation plan after workshop. 4 June Membership Luncheon ~ Workforce Development Join us as the Chamber welcomes Dr. Philip Cleveland, State Director of Career and Technical Education and Workforce Development, Alabama State Department of Education. Dr. Cleveland started this position in June 2012 which includes an expanded role in working with the Work Force and Economic Development Councils. Dr. Cleveland’s past
experiences include serving as a teacher, Career Technical Education Director, Principal,
and interim community college President. He will share current trends in education.
The membership luncheon, sponsored by Legacy Community Federal Credit Union, will be held from 11:00AM until 1:00AM at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena, 500 Amphitheater Road, Pelham. Investment for members is $17 and future members $25. Reservations are requested by noon, Monday, June 24.
Health Focus of the Month: Men’s Health - Why Do Men Skip Health Tests? It’s a fact that women are quicker to see a doctor when they develop symptoms. In contrast, men are more likely to ignore symptoms and hope they go away. Men are 24% less likely than women to have visited a doctor in the last year. According to an American Academy of Family Physicians survey: • 36% of men only see a doctor when they are extremely sick, • 55% percent of men did not have a routine physical in the last year, • Almost one in five, age 55 or older, had not been screened for colon cancer. Not seeing a doctor regularly means you lose out on important health
screenings or early diagnosis. You can feel fine and still have conditions that require treatment like high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Early detection and treatment of cholesterol and blood pressure problems can prevent a heart attack or stroke. Men may also miss out on preventative care. Early detection is the key to fighting many illnesses and diseases. Getting the right test at the right time can increase chances of treatment success and survival. Ask your doctor about what is right for you. Suggested Checkups and Tests for Men Screening tests can help men stay healthy. Find out which
tests you need based on age, health and risks for other health problems. This checklist is meant only as a general guideline. The tests and screenings you need depend on your individual risks, medical and genetic histories, and age. Talk with your doctor to know what you need to do to keep up your health. Your doctor can also tell you how often you should have these tests and screenings. Many doctors follow the guidelines put forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The USPSTF is the nation’s leading source of recommendations and guidelines for screening tests. 5 Greater Shelby Chamber Salutes Industry The Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce held its inaugural Industry Appreciation Reception on May 2 at Timberline Country Club. With approximately 40 business and community leaders on hand, the Chamber and the Shelby County Economic & Industrial Development Authority (SCEIDA) expressed their appreciation to local industry for their investment in Shelby County. The reception, sponsored by Regions, featured remarks from David Nolen, 2013 Chamber Chair, James Dedes, Executive Director of SCEIDA and Ms. April Gray, Project Manager with the Alabama Department of Commerce. “This event relates directly back to our Business Support and Development component of ShelbyOne -- the Chamber’s new five-year Strategic Plan,” Chamber President

& CEO Kirk Mancer commented. “Expressing our appreciation for the investment these businesses make in Shelby County is an important first step. And, make no mistake, these businesses do invest in our communities here in Shelby County - through their employment and training of our citizens, through their volunteer involvement
and through their financial stake in our area’s growth - not least of which is the tax base they generate,” Mancer continued. Future outreach efforts will also include the Chamber partnering with SCEIDA on visits to Shelby County industry to make sure any challenges or opportunities they might be facing are heard. “Shelby County has a lot to offer businesses

and industry — but that doesn’t mean they aren’t pursued and courted by other counties, other states — even other countries. We need to make sure we’re talking with them on a regular basis regarding their future employment needs, training efforts and more so they’re equipped to grow and prosper right here in Shelby County,” Mancer concluded. The Chamber plans on holding its Industry Appreciation event annually to enhance partnership opportunities between industry and community leaders that focus on the value of working together to ensure quality employment, retain existing businesses and ultimately enhance the quality of life for all citizens in Shelby County.

Congratulations on the grand opening of the Gardens of Pelham! The Gardens of Pelham is an assisted living and dementia care community designed to help residents maintain as much independence as possible, while offering comfortable living accommodations and assistance from a friendly staff.
Sam’s Club, Hoover recently celebrated its re-grand opening. At the event, Sam’s Club demonstrated their commitment to being an excellent corporate citizen by presenting Community Grants to multiple organizations. The Greater Shelby Chamber plans to use the funds towards education and workforce development. THANK YOU Sam’s Club!

Attendees of the recent membership luncheon enjoyed the presentation on “Stress And It’s Affect on You” by Dr. James Colvard, Brookwood Primary Care - Oak Mountain. He educated attendees on what are good and bad stressors, how to recognize the signs of stress, and used humor to make important key points.
