He accepted his current job at the United Way of Central Alabama in August 2012. He and his wife, Allyson, met on a mission trip in 2007 and married in July of this year. They reside in Hoover.
How My Chamber Works for Me “I own Buck Creek Stained Glass in Helena and sometimes it is hard to get my artwork out in the media. I posted a picture to Facebook and the Chamber re-posted the picture to their page. Within hours I was being contacted because the picture had been shared so many times from the Chamber page. I sold the stained glass by the end of the day! Membership with the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce doesn’t cost -- it pays!” David Schlueter Buck Creek Stained Glass Helena, AL 205-541-3322

Health Focus of the Month

Are You Ready to Quit Smoking? For many people, this is a question they ask themselves daily. There are many reasons smokers use to continue smoking: my other healthy habits make up for smoking, quitting will make me gain weight, or cutting back on smoking is good enough. But multiple studies, especially through the American Lung Association and American Cancer Society have proven these reasons are myths. Half of all smokers who keep smoking will end up dying from a smoking-related illness. In the United States alone, smoking is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths, and about 8.6 million people suffer from smoking-related lung and heart diseases. With these statistics maybe one smoker is ready to quit. Smoking cessation is an act the smoker “wants to do” or it will not be a success. 2013 Health Focus Sponsor
When asked the question ďwhy do you want to quit?Ē the answers are numerous such as health deterioration, for my family (spouse, kids, and grandchildren), job performance, etc. This desire and a good program make quitting smoking a reality. There are educational sources available on websites and programs. Usually in any literature, the first step in the education of smoking cessation is learning the addiction was created by habit. A person was not born smoking, so the process had to be learned and practiced multiple times. Many express the first experience was in an adolescent group setting. The habit grew in time to have trigger points talking on the phone, drinking coffee, after a meal, stress, etc. (the unrecognized reason) for picking up a cigarette to smoke. Knowing these triggers and how to change the situation of doing something different is the first accomplishment. The second step is picking a quit date. Pick a date within the next month as your quit day and make a plan. Tell family and friends about your
quit day. There is no one right way to quit. Most smokers prefer to quit cold turkey, some smoke fewer cigarettes until their quit date, or decide to smoke only at certain times of day. Remember, quitting smoking takes a strong commitment over a long time. The third step is staying committed to quitting and becoming healthier. Anyone hear of fruits, veggies, and walking? Exercising, eating
healthier, and having the encouragement of being a nonsmoker from family and friends is important. If a slip happens, just start again after the slip, the urge will pass when the cigarette is not picked up. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE! 6 Annual Prayer Breakfast Featuring Jeremiah Castille The Annual Prayer Breakfast is designed for members to come together to fellowship, celebrate, and give thanks for our many blessings. It’s also a time to reflect on what’s truly important in life and what inspires us to make a difference in the lives of others. Our keynote speaker will be Jeremiah Castille, Founder of the Jeremiah Castille Foundation. Jeremiah Castille Foundation focuses on mentoring. Growing up in a dysfunctional home filled with abuse, domestic violence and alcoholism, mentors were the direct result of Jeremiah Castille’s successes in life. Most notably, the legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant instilled discipline and leadership into Jeremiah’s life. Coach Bryant taught him that with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and integrity; he could do great things. Coach Bryant’s
2013 Prayer Breakfast Co-Sponsors
guidance and Jeremiah’s resolve led Jeremiah to numerous successes including, being selected the MVP in Coach Bryant’s last Liberty Bowl game. For six years, Jeremiah played professional football with Tampa Bay and Denver. As a member of the Denver Broncos, he played in Super
Bowl XXII between the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins. Throughout his professional career, Jeremiah’s purpose in life became clearer. His experiences led him to mentor, coach and encourage at-risk youth. In 1999, he and his wife Jean founded Jeremiah
Castille Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The foundation’s mission based on Isaiah 61:1- 4 is to preach good tidings to the poor, heal the broken hearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, open prison doors to those who are bound and glorify the Lord through preaching. The foundation’s vision is to invest, influence, impact and inspire lives so they will rebuild and restore generations. “Hope Revealed” to the hopeless is the focus of the programs of Jeremiah Castille Foundation. You will be inspired by his personal story. The Prayer Breakfast will be on Tuesday, November 26th from 7:30AM until 9:00AM at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, 500 Amphitheater Road, Pelham. RSVP is required by noon, Friday, November 22nd. Greater Shelby Chamber member reservations $17, Future-members $25.
