ON THE COVER

Y’all, we made it. Believe it or not, 2020 will have an end, and it’s just around the corner as we wrap up this issue. I certainly can’t recall a more tumultuous season or, ironically, one where I spent oh so much time slowing down and enjoying the simplicity of the everyday goodness. But amidst the crazy of the year, life went on too. Chef James Washington opened a new restaurant in Helena, Refined To Go, and we’ve got the full story on his culinary training and what you’ll want to order for dinner. Elaine Beriersdoerfer, age 72, continued her jiujitsu practice and even competed in the Pan American Championship, upping her Instagram following as @juijitsugrandma to over 16,000 along the way. John Pocopanni kept on with his pottery and photography work and his courses at the Shelby County Arts Council. And a Mt Laurel-based duo of female entrepreneurs has been innovatively creating not only colorful tech accessories but now puzzles too—how very 2020 of them, right? And last but not least Miami Fusion Café is moving forward with plans to open a new location, with a bar, in Greystone. You’ll find the full stories of all of these people and places in the pages that lie ahead in this issue. And then there’s the place where we all found ourselves forever on end this year: home. While you might be tired of time inside yours, in the pages ahead we take you on a tour of the Pricketts’ home and its mix of antiques and modern touches. Looking back at these rooms filled with their family’s memories, I am reminded of how the space where we wake each morning, where we dirty dishes and fill our stomachs, where we recline to rest and sleep ushers in a constant of comforts as tumult escalates in our larger worlds. That’s not even getting to annual Holiday Gift Guide in this issue. Be sure to check it out for gift-buying inspiration that also supports the local businesses around us. 2020—it’s been a wild ride we’re all ready to usher out, but we sure are glad we’ve lived it out in the richness of community around us here in Shelby County. Here’s to hoping your year ends with joyous memories amidst all the crazy!

“ ” THE QUESTION

In the midst of the hardships of 2020, what has brought you the most joy? Finding fun in the everyday normal. Finding four-leaf clovers, planting flowers from seeds, exploring backroads in my own little county and chasing sunsets in my own backyard.

We hired an investigator in Russia to search for birth family of our adopted children, and they found their older biological brother (whom we didn’t know existed!).

Watching families spending time together outdoors as well as putting prayer before fear!

I decided to quit my corporate job of 13 years and start my own apparel company in the middle of a pandemic, TheDaisyMaecompany. com.

My daughter turned one this past week. With quarantine and all I got to see things a lot of working parents miss. Standing, first steps, waving and a handful of first words.

Working from home and enjoying all the time with my fur babies, since all my children are grown. Also enjoying all the churches going online so we could “visit” them all!

I got to spend 6 months with my grandson that was born in February. Also, my oldest son was in a horrific car accident, and I was able to be home with him during his recovery.

Wonderful times with my family, and my fabulous faculty/staff at Mt Laurel Elementary who delivered meals to families as well as rocked their Google Meet meetings!

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Kitchen Table Return With all the uncertainty in today’s world, one thing remains constant: the family unit. From the rising of COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders to mask wearing and getting back to work, the traditional and expanded family has, once again, taken center stage and brought the kitchen table back to life. Here are some of the kitchen table uses making a comeback in 2020 and a few new ones, too. •Meal time. Setting the kitchen table with plates and silverware that hasn’t seen the light of day since being opened at your wedding shower is the “new normal.” The simple, yet tasty, meal of mac n’ cheese and green beans adds to the decor. The table is cleared and wiped clean; no more collecting Donna is best known for dust for this kitchen mainstay. covering the construction •Remote school. Add a small industry in the B2B market. task lamp, placemat for the laptop Find her on Twitter @imraptorbhm. or Google Chromebook, a few pencils and paper, and ta dah … school is in session. The decision to homeschool makes the kitchen table a desk for learning. •Household business. The holder of mail, keys, bills, correspondence and to-do lists, the kitchen table gets major kudos for keeping items in one place. The sturdy kitchen table is also the place where one leans when the feeling of overwhelm takes hold. •Game night. Just when you thought board games were a novelty of the past, monopoly money becomes the trading currency of family fun and laughs. From puzzles to card games, the kitchen table is the host of choice. •Remote work. The kitchen table also serves as the desk for virtual meetings, lengthy phone calls, and work folders as offices remain closed and people quarantine at home to work remotely. According to whenwasitinvented.org, the kitchen table was developed and patented by inventor Henry A. Jackson on October 6, 1896, for the purpose of meal prep and dining. I’m sure the table existed before it was patented, since it was depicted in earlier pieces of American literature and older writings. The kitchen table has a long history and a bright future as its various uses once again bring life back to the family unit and the home. And, not to be forgotten, the winner for best supporting role goes to the chair … that’s a whole other story. For now, that’s it.

ARTS

A SOURCE OF HEALING

For potter John Pocopanni art is bearing your soul to the world or simply the person next to you—and that’s what he tries to instill in his students. BY LINDSAY SCHLUNTZ PHOTOS BY MARY TWEEDY & CONTRIBUTED ShelbyLiving.com

John Pocopanni’s artistic journey started, as many often do, by simply picking up a pencil one day. He started trying to draw things he was interested in, like video game characters and images from cartoons and anime. Today it’s often his emotions that shape his pottery and photography. “It can come from happiness, sadness, anger, depression, any number of emotions or combination therein,” he says. “This is why art as a whole, and especially painting in my opinion, can be so healing for people.” For him, the simple act of focusing an emotion into the creation of something can aid in reconciliation and coping, and that’s what he tries

to convey as he teaches. “Art is expression, it is emotion, it is fear, sadness, love, joy, anxiousness,” he says. “It is bearing your soul to the world or simply the person next to you, both equally terrifying. But that’s ok. It’s something I try to instill in every student I have.” Back to his life story in art, by his junior and senior years attending Hoover High School, John practically lived in the art halls, with multiple art classes as well as working as a student aid for the ceramics instructor both years. “The place where I really started my arts education is now the same place I am lucky enough to have returned to as an instructor of art myself,”

he says contentedly. “Coming back to Hoover High School has been very nostalgic and very much feels like home. Not only for how welcoming it is but also how familiar things are. Many of the same wonderful teachers are still here that were when I was a student. How amazing it is to be at an institution that values the arts at the level that Hoover does.” John went on to pursue art at the University of Montevallo. “Every professor I had the luxury of taking a class from was phenomenal,” he says. “I was introduced to new skills, challenges and a variety of disciplines.” His first degree there was concentrated on digital photography. He likes to point out that his love of this medium was discovered virtually by accident, as he signed up for a photography class just to fill a hole in his schedule.

Before he had even finished that degree, however, he began working with a promotional marketing company doing photos for print and eventually running workshops for other aspiring photographers. When John returned to the University of Montevallo for his Master of Art Education, he chose to broaden his artistic horizons. During these years, courses in oil painting sparked new creative juices, and his love for ceramics was rekindled. “There was something almost cathartic about really working on something more hands-on after so many years focusing on digital or two-dimensional works,” he says. “As I pursued it more and more, I just couldn’t get enough!” After completing his second degree, he returned

LEARN FROM JOHN POCOPANNI John’s pottery classes are available at Shelby County Arts Council in Columbiana for students ages 16 and older on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or on 2016

Sundays from 2 to 4:30 p.m. He takes his new students through the full process of creating a piece on the pottery wheel. He covers the foundational skills of wedging and centering clay on the wheel, trimming a piece, bisque firing, glazing and glaze firing. Students will learn how to create both small bowls and forms off the mound as well as large bowls by the end of their first six-week session. A digital photography course with John is also available at SCAC on Tuesdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Find more information on these courses at shelbycountyartscouncil.com.

to Montevallo for one final semester to finish the additional requirements that would enable him to teach up to junior college levels. One of his courses was Ceramics Portfolio. He was eventually recruited to help his professor instruct the two intro classes that semester. Looking back, he sees how this gave him the teaching experience he needed. He didn’t know it at the time, but it prepared me to create his own curriculum he’d later use to teach at the Shelby County Arts Council (SCAC). From start to finish, John admits that his artistic process with his own work versus student work at SCAC are very similar. “Given that the majority of my students are very new to the process, the primary focus is on instilling the importance of the foundational skills necessary for the completion of any level of ceramics,” he explains. If, after their initial six-week session, students want to continue learning the craft, they can sign 20 November/December 2020

back up for the same class and continue moving at their own pace. Once students have achieved an appropriate level of mastery the artist moves them into a guided studio environment that allows them to work on whatever they want—with the benefit of having an instructor present. “They can come up with ideas, we can problem solve or they can bring in something they saw in person or online and I can teach them how to make it.” He encourages his students to find what makes them happy with art. “Often it’s merely the creation. Our drives and our reasons may change over time but the fulfillment we get from creating something with our own hands is irreplaceable,” he passionately insists. “Try as many types of art as you can. Take a class, hell, take all the classes you can because it isn’t just art. It isn’t just making the pretty picture or the pretty thing. It influences every aspect of our lives. It teaches us how to problem solve, how to collaborate and work with others, how to make mistakes and how to fix them. Fail, fail and fail again. Art teaches us how to be better versions of ourselves, maybe even the best version.” See a variety of John’s work on Instagram @j_pocopanni_art.

READ THIS BOOK

Books to Gift Recommendations from

M.L. Little Local Author

Though I’ve lived in this state my whole life, I never intended to write about Alabama—but that’s exactly what I did, disguised as a fantasy world. My Seventh Realm series is about a journey through fear and anxiety set in a rambling universe of swords, modern technology and purple cats. Nothing makes me happier than the thought of someone putting my odd little books into the hands of a friend, and with that in mind, here are five of my favorites to leave under the Christmas tree for your family and friends.

Norse Mythology

By Neil Gaiman We all know Thor and Loki from Marvel movies, but the master storyteller brings heart and humor to Asgard and the Bifröst better than ever before, with an ending guaranteed to give you chills. Don’t overlook the audiobook option—Neil Gaiman’s narration is superb.

Beartown

By Fredrik Backman An act of violence against a young girl shatters the peace in a Swedish hockey town. Translated from its original language, Beartown starts out slow, but before long, you won’t be able to put it down.

The Everlasting Story of Nory

By Nicholson Baker Nory is a chatty, distracted, 9-year-old girl who makes pop-up books and has nightmares as wild as her imagination. This stream-of-consciousness novel for adults is a delightful peek into the hilarious and heartfelt inner world of a child.

Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading

By Lucy Mangan With humor and quick wit, British author Lucy Mangan takes us through the bookshelves and libraries of her childhood as she invites us to reminisce alongside her. A must-read for former childhood bookworms, this narrative inspired me to pen my own memories.

Eleanor & Park

By Rainbow Rowell I couldn’t resist this one. While avoiding the angsty, pretentious nature populating the YA genre, Eleanor & Park tells a gloriously sweet story of two misfits and their uncomplicated love for one another. I don’t like romance, but this one warmed my stone-cold heart.

JIUJITSU GRANDMA

Elaine Beiersdoerfer is proving that age and stage of life don’t have to hold you back from a fresh adventure. BY ASHLEY FARLOW PHOTOS BY KEITH MCCOY ShelbyLiving.com

25

Elaine Beriersdoerfer started jiujitsu at age 69 and by 72 has collected many competition medals.

26 November/December 2020

E

Elaine Beiersdoerfer’s seven grandchildren call her “Maine,” a combination of Mom and Elaine, and frequently attend “Granny Camp,” where Elaine hosts them on her farm in Calera. There they learn everything from riding horses to sewing a button, science experiments to making homemade biscuits. She even taught them a line dance in her equestrian riding ring that she had also taught to—her horse! But when she’s not called Elaine, Maine or Mom, she has another that she did not see coming: Jiujitsu Grandma. Elaine, at now 72 years old, is a blue belt in jiujitsu, and currently ranked third in the world in her division, grappling around at prominent competitions with competitive athletes all younger than her. When she was 20 years old, she started her martial arts journey when she took a six-week judo class to try something new while her husband was earning his master’s degree. She didn’t pick it back up until the age of 69 when she became aware of Gracie Barra Alabama in Pelham, who she called in February 2018 and asked, “Do you have a class for old people?” Attending her first judo class as a senior citizen, Elaine joined the line of teenage boys and men. They appeared more nervous than she was, not because they knew she’d soon become a famed face in jiujitsu but because they were scared to “break her.” “It’s ok!” she told them and gave it her best. She perhaps gained some of her grit from growing up with two older brothers with whom “rough and tumble” was customary. On his first impression, Kaliffa Oliveira, owner and head instructor at Gracie Barra Alabama, says Elaine had him puzzled when she walked in, all 5 feet, 108 pounds of her at 69 years old. “We have a big sign that ShelbyLiving.com

says, ‘Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone,’ but it was challenging since I had never had anyone near her age.” Oliveira, who established the martial arts studio in Pelham in 2012, did his research and found one other competitor in her 60s in Hawaii, and he took the same methods to begin training Elaine, who he had guided to switch from the combative, throwing bodies of judo to the grappling, ground fighting of jiujitsu. “She learned very fast, and she is very dedicated. She even shows up twice a day sometimes,” he says. Oliveira, who has students ages 4 to 72 (Elaine), is the only certified jiujitsu and judo black-belt in the Birmingham area. Elaine definitely comes from a family of athletes.“But I am the only one who is not one,” she notes, clarifying she never played sports. Professor Oliveira disagrees though. “In this sport, you get a finger twisted or a bruise and see people give up,” he says. “She always comes back, always keeps training, and that’s an athlete.” Elaine fought in her first competition at age 70, where she had four matches in 70 minutes and won one, lost one and tied two. Oliveira does coach Elaine differently than his younger students though. “I tell the younger guys, ‘Go hard, don’t stop,’ and I tell her, ‘Be smart, don’t

rush.’ She’s a very good listener and very coachable.” Elaine even records instruction on video so she can go home and re-watch and practice. “I thought I was in better shape, until my first class,” says Elaine. “I couldn’t get my breath, but I didn’t want anyone to think I was a wuss, and that was just after the warm-up.” Since then she has watched her body become stronger, her balance improve, and her mental toughness increase. “I get nervous before the fights,” she acknowledges, “but once I step on the mat, I’m good.” Jiujitsu is a very mental sport, and her strong-as-an-ox mentality stands out and now has taken her to compete worldwide. “When [Professor Oliveira] first said he wanted me to compete at Worlds, I said, ‘You’re kidding!’” Elaine says. At that time, she hadn’t even earned her blue belt, a must for Worlds. He also encouraged her to create an Instagram account showcasing her jiujitsu, which her granddaughter McKenzie, a Samford student-athlete, happily created for her. That’s when the “Jiujitsu Grandma” title stuck. By the time Elaine arrived at Worlds (which with her unwavering mind-set she did), she had thousands of Instagram followers (16K as of writing) and was

hounded for pictures, international interviews, and experienced true fanfare—all much to her gratitude and delight. Even though Elaine is still somewhat new to martial arts, she isn’t new to brave adventures. In her 20s she parachuted out of an airplane by herself not long after she married Werner Beiersdoerfer. “He always said, ‘You want to do it? Go ahead!” Elaine and Werner have now been married more than 50 years, and he says he’s always been her biggest fan. “She is strong where I am weak,” he says. “We really do complete each other in the way God knew we needed.” Werner is not surprised a bit by his wife’s success. “When she sets her mind to something, she does it, and she knows I am going to support her.” An athlete of high achievement himself, (a long distance runner for Auburn University and past coach at Vestavia and Birmingham schools), Werner doesn’t give her any pointers, but at every match, full of nerves and pride, he hollers and cheers her on like he did for their kids at their countless sporting events growing up. He never missed a kid’s meet, match or game and he’s never missed any of Elaine’s either. He can often be found being asked to take a picture when people overcome with excitement meet the “Jiujitsu Grandma.” Elaine is humbled by all those she inspires. “I do hear from a lot of people who are older, but the most messages are from people in their 30s and 40s who think they’re too old to do something until they see me,” she says. She also hears from teenagers who say seeing her compete gives them hope that getting older doesn’t mean sitting in a rocking chair. Her age does come with its challenges though. Elaine has booked her share of chiropractic care and orthopedic

appointments to keep her body moving well and to tend to any injuries. One of the orthopedics she visits has a poster of her hanging in his office that reads, “Not too old and not too late!” Any given week Elaine trains 3 to 4 hours and is usually covered in bruises. “But if I stopped every time I got hurt, I wouldn’t ever do it,” she says. Werner references the old TIMEX commercials when he describes her, “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.” When she’s not training, she still doesn’t seem to stop moving either—relaxing by horseback riding, which she says loosens her back, or walking one of her many dogs from Sanctuary Animal Rescue, which her two daughters, Brittney Hogue and Heidi Stubbs, operate locally. Her daughter Brittney, who at one point was the sole female and the running back for Shelby Academy JV football (doesn’t that sounds like her mother’s spirit?). “She has taught her children to reach for the stars and follow our dreams, to persevere through it all,” Brittney says, adding that the Biblical passage Proverbs 31:25 sums up her mother, “She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future.” Elaine’s son Brock Beiersdoerfer, who with his wife Kimberly owns local hit Heavenly Donuts, says he’s really proud of her and happy for her. “She’s always amazed at the comments she gets from people all over the world. But she has never been someone to grow old quietly,” says Brock.

Elaine’s daughter Heidi has always known her mom was an “easy to love” thrill-seeker, but she admits even her jiujitsu interest was shocking at first. “She’s doing things most 40-year-olds don’t want to attempt,” Heidi says. During Heidi’s son’s first football game, she nervously watched him and at the same time was streaming live on her phone her 70-year-old mom fighting in her first jiujitsu competition in Los Angeles. She admits she and her siblings have had their share of uneasiness watching her compete, but that they all couldn’t be prouder of their mom, and they think it’s been great for her. Elaine has taken a few of her grandkids to class too. “They thought it was a little hard,” she says with a laugh. “It’s cute…I think they think it’s cool. And I’ve taught them self-defense.” One young granddaughter who was watching her “Maine” fight the black-belt professor, said appallingly, “I will never do this.” Heidi says that there seems no better time than now to encourage others—especially as the senior community has been hit hard in so many ways throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. So, next time you, your teen, a friend, or maybe a parent or grandparent are feeling low—hit the search icon on Instagram and type “Jiujitsu Grandma,” and you just may just be inspired to set a new goal and to work hard to reach it no matter your age or stage.

Acclaimed chef James Washington is bringing everything but the linens to his new Helena to-go restaurant. BY SARAH COOK MCBRIDE PHOTOS BY JEREMY RAINES ShelbyLiving.com

By age 18, James Washington knew more about how to prepare soft shell crab, fresh grouper and decadent French desserts than the average chef. Serving Birmingham’s elite under one of the city’s most revered chefs was James’s preferred form of schooling. “It was an incredible experience,” the now 51-year-old chef says of his first job working at Highlands Bar & Grill where he started as a dishwasher and eventually worked his way up to sous chef. “I was just a young kid out of the neighborhood, and I didn’t really have any direction at the time. But once I got that job, I just saw so much stuff that I’d never seen before. It was like going to culinary school.” Those early years planted a seed inside James that would eventually grow into a dream of one day managing a restaurant of his own. After getting schooled by Frank Stitt at Highlands Bar & Grill and Bottega, James went on to learn under an impressive lineup of other culinary kings like Wolf Gang Puck, Chris Hastings and Dean Fearing. As Birmingham began to rise as a foodie hotspot, James’s cooking acumen grew right alongside with it. Now, several decades after he first started washing dishes at Highlands, James is no longer sharing the spotlight with another head chef. No longer named “up and coming,” James has arrived. Earlier this year, James cut the ribbon on Refined

To Go, a food-truck style restaurant without wheels. The concept for the restaurant, James says, came from a desire to offer five-star quality dishes without the five-star prices. Located at 778 2nd Street in Helena, Refined To Go takes southern soul food and gives it a (figurative) white tablecloth makeover. Those who visit the restaurant—which operates in a to-go style fashion— get to pick a meat, two vegetables and a starch. Don’t jump to conclusions and call Refined To Go a meatand-three, though. James isn’t into labels. “I don’t really put a label on my food and say it’s soul food. It’s refined comfort food is what it is,” James says. “It’s food I cook from the heart, using some southern ingredients. But I may put a French flair on it, or I may put a Moroccan flair or an Italian flair—whatever I’m feeling.” James’s culinary creativity shines in classic southern dishes like smothered pork chops with peppers and onions, blackened salmon, collards, field peas with snaps and okra and of course, his famous scratch-made peach cobbler. Since opening Refined To Go, James has enjoyed a steady stream of loyal customers who are able to get their fix of fancy dining without worrying about staying six feet apart (since they can take their meals home).

After working under chefs like Frank Stitt and Chris Hastings, James Washington has opened his own restaurant concept in Helena.

“It’s been a blessing,” James says, thinking back on his journey to finally opening a place of his own. “I had thoughts for a while that I may never own my own restaurant, and I was ok with that, but I knew that was my dream.” James credits his success to always doing each job with passion—whether it was washing dishes, flipping burgers or preparing ornate dishes. Without passion, James says, it’s just another job. And he’s never been interested in that. “It doesn’t have to be high-end food. You don’t have to cook for the elite,” James says. “You just have to love what you’re doing. If you open up a hamburger joint, you have to serve the best burger possible. If it’s a soup shop, then it’s got to be the best soup you can do. It can’t be a job. It has to be a passion. It has to be a love.” Judging by the raving fans Refined To Go has already created, it’s safe to say James’s passion is a hit. Because of COVID-19, Refined To Go is keeping limited hours (although they have maintained their ‘Soul food Sunday,’ hosted the first Sunday of every month). To avoid crowds, they encourage call-in orders. For up-to-date menus and hours, visit refinedtogo.com.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Samantha Delgado Miami Fusion Café Owner PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Samantha and Luis Delgado want people in Birmingham to escape to South Beach, Florida for a meal. That’s why they have created an upbeat vibe that makes customers feel like family in their downtown restaurant, and that’s what they are replicating at their second Miami Fusion Café in Greystone. The full-service, sit-down restaurant is located in Greystone Park Plaza, on your left as you drive up Double Oak Mountain on Highway 280, and as of press time was planning to open in mid-October for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. To learn more about it, we chatted with Samantha about the couple’s vision for the restaurant. What inspired you to open the first Miami Fusion Café? Antiques add character alongside clean lines in the Prickett home—with décor fitting for four kids too. BY MADOLINE MARKHAM PHOTOS BY LINDSEY DRENNAN ShelbyLiving.com

Look closely, and there’s no doubt Kristin and Cannon Prickett’s home is filled with children, though it’s thoughtfully designed with Kristin’s taste for mixing antiques with modern touches on every surface too. Even when their four kids aren’t home, you’ll see family portraits that line the staircase, well placed cubbies that hide toys and bedrooms upstairs that are decorated with a youthful flair. Although you won’t meet their daughter Olivia Charles when you walk in, she’s honored throughout the Mt Laurel home in projects from the past decade and has been since she passed away at 9 months of age from SIDS. “All the projects I dedicate to her as a way to remember her and have her name still spoken,” Kristin says of her design business, Olivia Charles Interiors. In fact, though she’d worked for Southern Living before having kids, Kristin didn’t get

42 November/December 2020

into interior decorating until after losing her daughter. At the time their oldest son Parrish was in preschool. “I was distraught, but I needed to get out of the house,” she notes. So she and her mother-in-law rented a booth at Hanna Antiques and called it Olivia Charles Antiques. “It started as a way to keep my mind busy filling this booth, and we started selling custom furniture. And that would always turn into (customers) asking me to help with the rest of the room.” Today Kristin’s business has technically morphed into interiors from antiques, but antiques are very much still part of her style, which she describes as transitional leaning toward a little more traditional. “I like a mix of old and new, clean lines with old ornate pieces,” she says. “I feel like every room needs a touch of old to add character.” And that’s just what you’ll find in each detail of her home—all in honor of Olivia Charles.

Dining Room This room might be compact but it lets in light and views of their wooded front yard from its three grasscloth walls. Kristin paired an antique table from Interiors in Pepper Place with more modern lucite chairs and pops of green in her glasses and the velvet Anthropologie chairs at either end. ShelbyLiving.com

Sunroom Kitchen Kristin and Cannon found these antique globes on an anniversary trip to Mobile, and Cannon made them into pendant lights to hang above their cabinetry. The couple recently added a Frosty Carrina quartz countertop to freshen up the kitchen’s look.

MORE HEAD-OUT EXAMS

The Pricketts had this space, originally a screened-in porch, made into a room originally to serve as a nursery, though now it’s used for homework, playing and reading. Recently they added two chaises by Norwalk from Urban Home Market, and on either side of them are old orange crates (Cannon grew up in Central Florida and his family has an orange grove) with baskets inside to hold toys.

Tech Candy might make phone chargers and other electronic accessories, but you won’t find their products at Best Buy. That’s because its niche is all about the design factor needed to succeed in local gift stores and national retailers like Hallmark, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million—all aimed at a primarily female audience. “We take something that is inherently technological and somewhat confusing and make it simpler with beautiful design that pops. We create solutions that are as sellable and giftable as possible,” says April Mraz, half of the female duo behind OCG Products, the company that created and owns the Tech Candy brand. “I often say we are missionaries from the technology world to the accessories world,” adds her business partner Cherie Stine. For example, the team sourced a grey putty used in keyboard and cup holders to pick up crumbs, sold in plain grey packs. “We noticed it was a cool product, but it was boring and uninspired,” Cherie explains. “April designed a similar product in ombre colors, contained in a fun container with fantastic copy. It removes all of the debris from computer keyboards and car vents. We call it Tech Taffy. It’s beautiful when you see it stacked in pyramids at the

cash register at gift stores.” In fact, it landed in The Container Store’s Stocking Stuffer Guide for 2020. The company got its start back in 2009 when most cell phone cases were basic black, and most notably, not attractive. So April and Cherie, who had both worked in advertising, developed cases with interchangeable designs and colors that were both functional and beautiful. And the Tech Candy brand took off from there, migrating into what the team calls “techcessories” with a feminine aesthetic. The products all have clever names too. The Bad Guy Blocker, for example, is a “web curtain” that opens and shuts your camera so you can have it closed when you don’t want to be seen—and is far more elegant than a Post-it note. Also popular in their product line in the Power House, a round charging station that looks nice next to your couch, and a smaller Power Trip that charges multiple devices at once— all in colors such as Bright Pink, Light Mint and Light Slate. Clean Up Your Act, a cute pack of antimicrobial wipes to clean phones, sold out of all 12,000 units they had in stock when the COVID-19 pandemic began. (Thank goodness, they’ve restocked since.) In the early days of Tech Candy, Cherie’s daughter, Sienna (now 16), and April’s son, Martin (now 13), would play in the Tech Candy warehouse and made forts out of boxes. Today the company has outsourced their fulfillment to a warehouse in Indianapolis, but their office remains in Mt Laurel, the neighborhood where they were both living when they first met and decided to team up. (Cherie has since moved, but April is on her fourth house in the neighborhood.) The duo’s unofficial morning meeting room is at Jimbo’s Soda Fountain right in the middle of town. “If someone sits at our table everyone else will look at them like, ‘You better

not sit there,’” Cherie says. Each morning it’s scrambled eggs with cheese and tomatoes and whole grain toast for April and either a waffle or biscuit for Cherie (April notes that she “waffles” between the two). It’s there that they touch base on what’s happened overnight with their factories in China and update each other on the previous day’s progress. April, the company’s “Design Darling,” handles the visual side of things, designing products and packaging and managing branding, websites and advertising. Once the product is created, then Cherie and her team of sales reps determine where and how to sell it, while Cherie, the OCG Products “Sales Stalker,” oversees the warehouse. The duo say they complement each other well, and because they are the only two decision makers, they can move quickly. “We generally agree 80 percent of the time, and when we don’t, we negotiate fast,” April says. “We can have a 10-minute meeting on how to name a product,” Cherie adds. Even a decade into the business, they never know which products will take off. “It surprises us,” Cherie says. “We go to market with new products every six months, and we make internal bets on what will perform.” “We will think we will have a winner, and then it’s crickets,” April says. And other times it’s just the opposite. In 2018, Tech Candy got a big break when several of their products were featured nationally on ABC’s Good Morning America. In the past two years, they have been on the show 54 November/December 2020

10 times, with additional placement on ABC’s The View, where they were featured as a COVID-19 Small Business. During one of those placements alone, they sold 43,000 units of product. Tech Candy is scheduled to next appear in December on Good Morning America too. Some of their favorite success stories are more personal. Once, Cherie was having dinner at a restaurant at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas when she noticed a woman at the table next to them had a Tech Candy case, and then she noticed another woman at another table had one too. A few years ago, when April and Cherie attended the Grammys in LA, the duo spotted a Tech Candy case on an attendee’s phone at the official after party. “We almost lost it,” April recalls. They have also seen their phone cases on the TV show Nashville and their To Have & To Hold phone-back wallet on the Hallmark movie Christmas Matchmakers. Sometimes they’ll find an uptick of sales and only afterward discover it’s because a TikTok or Instagram influencer talked up one of their products and went viral. Time will tell where their two new product lines end up appearing. This spring they debuted Distill Brand Sanitizing Elixir, a high-end, giftable hand

sanitizer sold in luxury glass bottles. The elixir features essential oil blends like Rosemary Mint and Lavender Cream and is made and bottled virtually down the road from Tech Candy HQ at Iron City Distillery in Leeds. And as if one brand wasn’t enough to launch in 2020, they have also created another fitting for this year where yearover-year purchase of puzzles are reported up 370 percent: a line of luxury wooden heirloom puzzles under the brand Trove. Yes, they are actually made of wood. Plus, six are sold in a glass apothecary jar meant for display before and after puzzling, and three are available in a Pass-It-Pouch where each puzzler signs his or her name and that encourages passing it on. As their new lines show, for April and Cherie there’s no such thing as boredom, even during a quarantine. “We are serial entrepreneurs,” Cherie says. “Every week we are pitching each other new ideas. We are in the head space where everywhere we look, we imagine a product that can solve a problem.” And they will certainly solve it in a beautiful way too. Ambassador of the Month Karen is a seasoned entrepreneur, and has successfully run many businesses, and has always wanted to own a coffee house. In fact, she met her husband in a coffee house in New York . Though she has been out of the coffee-house scene since she managed one in college, she has fallen right back into her stride, completing all of her permits and inspection within seven business days of learning of the availability of the space and the equipment. As a coffee house owner, she’s been making quite a stir in the

Pelham, Alabama business community by offering a unique venue to meet and conduct business that is half conference room, half living room, as well as providing a comfortable setting to read a book, laugh with a friend, listen to great music while enjoying the free WiFi... Karen is passionate about people, and promoting wellness, and has found a new vehicle to accomplish both. When she’s not behind the counter at Buck Creek Coffee, you can find her advocating a healthy and non-toxic lifestyle.

Health Focus of the Month:

Most of us are familiar with type 2 diabetes or know a loved one or friend that is living with diabetes. Did you know type 2 diabetes could have been prevented by simple lifestyle changes years before diagnosis? Our body begins to tell us that it is having issues managing our blood sugar levels long before we receive a diabetes diagnosis. Prediabetes is not a new phenomenon. Doctors have called it “impaired fasting glucose” or “impaired glucose tolerance” for many years, but what patient would understand what that means unless they are medically trained and actively involved in their healthcare? In recent years, issues with elevated blood sugar or Hemoglobin A1c, a percentage value that tells doctors what your average blood sugar level has been for the past three months, has now been termed prediabetes to help raise awareness for patients that there is a metabolic issue with their body and how it han-

dles energy from food. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 3 Americans have prediabetes, but 84% of the individuals are unaware. What causes problems with our blood sugars? There are many factors. Ask your doctor to screen you for prediabetes if you: uAre 45 years of age and older uAre overweight uHave a family member with type 2 diabetes uAre physically active less than 3 times per week uHave ever been diagnosed with gestational diabetes or Polycystic Ovary Disease If you are diagnosed with prediabetes, here are some small, simple steps you can take to reduce your risk for developing diabetes. uExercise a minimum of 150

minutes each week. It is important to move daily, so breaking up this activity into short 10 minute bursts of movement can be effective and achievable no matter what your lifestyle looks like. uSet reminders to move several minutes every hour that you are sedentary. uEat a variety of fiber rich, plant-based foods throughout the day. uConsume meals no longer than 4-6 hours apart and have a light, balanced snack if you will not be able to eat in a timely manner. uPair lean proteins or healthy fats with carbohydrate rich foods (fruit, crackers, whole wheat bread, potatoes, etc.). uStop smoking. uReduce your stressors through meditation, walking outdoors,

deep breathing exercises, yoga, tai chi, journaling and more. uImprove your quality of sleep by setting regular bedtimes and wake times, stopping the use of technology in bed or several hours before bed, and creating a calming bedtime routine and environment. These healthy habits and others could lead to modest weight loss and reduce your overall body fat which in turn helps improve the way your body uses energy from food. Take charge of your health today to improve your tomorrow! Written by: Katie Ghossein MS, RD, LD, Wellness Dietitian and Lifestyle Coach

MY SHELBY LIVING BRYAN POPE

Shelby County Schools Digital Media Specialist

A Bit of Everything

Old Town Helena There is so much good in one location, but my personal favorites are: the Depot for a Philly Cheesesteak and tater tots, Buck Creek for a kayak to the Cahaba, and Brain Freeze for their special recipe Chocolate Frozen Custard (go for the large, it’s worth it).

Sunset Views

Helena High School Parking Lot So many evenings we take our four children for a walk up to one of the best views in Shelby County. My wife and I watch the sunset as our twins (13) create TikTok videos and our younger two (7 & 5) ride their bikes around the parking lot.

Cup of Joe

Adventurer’s Coffee Co. in Calera Usually, my wife and I use Keurig coffee at home (not a good cup of coffee) and it needs creamer to be tolerable. Adventurer’s dark roast coffee is the perfect cup of black coffee. The owners of the company are friendly and always quick to offer me a Danish, which I love.

Nutter Butter Popsicle

Frios in Alabaster This may be my absolute favorite dessert in all of Shelby County, maybe Alabama. Don’t tell my grandmother—her banana split pie is always waiting on me in Cullman. Frios puts actual Nutter Butters in this thing. I have actually gone in to buy one and left with two in my hands for the car ride home after eating one already.

For the Kids

Shelby County Schools This is the reason we moved to Shelby County 12 years ago, and I have worked for them for the past three. Decisions are made, goals are accomplished, and standards are raised through the power of relationships in this school system. The people make it what it is and it is amazing.
