ho’s the best in Shelby County? We have the answers for you in this month’s issue of Shelby Living. Thousands of readers voted for their favorite local foods, businesses and events when our contest launched in June. This year’s winners include some old favorites – Jim N’ Nick’s, which won Best Barbecue for the fourth year in a row – and lots of new names, including Donut Joe’s for Best Donut Shop and Beka’s Boutique for Best Children’s Clothing Store. This contest, which is our fourth, is a great way to support local businesses, and we appreciate your support. Now, do you see a name on this list that’s unfamiliar? Make sure to stop by and see why our readers voted it as one of Shelby County’s best. Also, if you have any suggestions for new categories, feel free to email those to me. This issue of Shelby Living is full of
other interesting stories. Here are a few of my favorites: Our cover story this month is the Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve in Montevallo. The swamp is beautiful, mysterious and home to a delightful collection of animals and plants. Even better, a boardwalk is available so visitors can enjoy the swamp as well. Old Baker Farm is another Shelby County treasure. The farm has been owned and worked by the same family for four generations. Each October, the farm opens to visitors for a series of entertaining and educational events, including Living History Day and Western Cowboy Day. One of our most popular sections is Shelby Spotted. People love seeing photos of their friends out and about in Shelby County. If your organization or business is hosting an event, please send your photos (along with names of each person) to me. As always, please contact me if you have any questions, comments or story ideas. Have a wonderful fall! l

THE SIMPLE LIFE
Burn brightly
I
f you were playing a word association game with the word “burn,” would you think of fire, blaze, or possibly hot? Or would you likely blurt out both ends, bridges, and out! If you are among those who would respond with the latter, breathe a sigh of relief that you’re not the only one Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, who feels this way. When you think Simpleworksmtsp.com of something burning, it’s natural lisa@simpleworksmtsp.com to think that it would eventually 205.981.7733 extinguish. Can you recall a time when you felt “burnt out” in a job, routine, or relationship? Was it because things were going great or were you frustrated with some aspect of the situation? Chances are frustration is the answer. Here a few ways to “burn brightly” so you can find the excitement once again. • Breathe. Take time to stop and catch your breath. Control the pace at which you’re running through your day. • Brain dump. Write out everything you need to do. Next, schedule a time to do each project. You’ll find you get more done when you know when you’re going to do it. • Sleep. Exhaustion can be the underlying problem of many frustrations. Seek medical attention if you’re lacking the recommended eight hours of sleep a night on a regular basis. • Find three successes. Catch yourself doing something right and reward yourself. Three victories a day will crush the feeling of defeat. • Compartmentalize. Set boundaries. While boundaries can be flexible, make sure they stay “sticky” to keep yourself in control. Be present to the moment. • Be selective. We become like the five people we are around most. Are they energy givers or energy takers? Recharge your energy with music, exercise, changing your diet, or altering your sleep habits. Family, coworkers, friends, and now the world of social media are vying for a piece of you. Could you burn brightly if you were not spread so thin? Would creating a routine in your day allow you to enjoy more hours versus minutes? If you’re flickering in the important areas of your life, you may want to reflect on what you can choose to do differently from this day forward. It’s time to associate a bonfire as a fall pastime, not as a personal meltdown. It’s that simple. l

Griffin throws first pitch at Barons game At about 8 p.m. on Aug. 8, 9-year-old Gabe Griffin strutted to the pitcher’s mound at Regions Field. After taking several steps forward, he wound up, and then released. Gabe, a Shelby County resident, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a muscle-deteriorating disease typically passed down genetically. Victims are usually confined to a wheelchair by age 12, and are not expected to live far beyond the age of 20. Scott and Traci Griffin founded Hope for Gabe to not only combat Duchenne by raising awareness and funds to aid research for a cure, but also to leave a legacy for their son and the brother of their three other children. The
pleasure of
painting
Art has brought a lifetime of inspiration to Diane Shepherd Story and Photos by LAURA BROOKHART
10 | ShelbyLiving.com
T
The upbeat tempo of tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s are spiraling around Diane Shepherd as she dips her brush into the paint. The pure pleasure of painting, of interpreting a scene or subject in watercolor or oil, is what brings Shepherd back again and again to her easel. Shepherd began painting in high school in Mobile, where she grew up, and later attended Auburn, majoring in Visual Design, the term for commercial or advertising design. “Painting has become more enjoyable as I have gotten older. I am less stressed about the results and work in a looser style than I did years ago. I like learning new techniques but usually gravitate back to my favorite ways to paint,” she said, noting that oil is her current preferred medium. A Signature Bronze member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama and Signature Member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, Shepherd has also exhibited in the Energen Art Show for the past five years. Shepherd credits artist Wayne Spradley, with whom she studied four years, as a wonderful and

powerful influence. “I looked at nature differently after studying with Wayne,” she said, pointing out several of Spradley’s works that now grace her home walls. His influence can be seen in Shepherd’s landscapes—the way the composition leads your eye into the painting and the role of shadow and light play within that moves the viewer’s gaze around the entire canvas. “He dances with watercolor, I would say,” she reflects. Shepherd says she considers her painting of three baby bluebirds entitled, We Three, to be a signature work. She creates an original painting, usually a botanical or bird scene, for her Christmas card each year. She also contributes to charity auctions and works on commission. Shepherd has taught watercolor classes at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church in the past few years. “Teaching is rewarding as it makes the teacher examine their own ways of painting and it’s fun to watch others do their ‘own thing.’ I’ve never had a student who wasn’t somewhat pleased with what they created,” she said. Shepherd’s work will be on view in the annual Members Show of the Watercolor Society of Alabama during September and October at the downtown Birmingham Public Library. l October 2014 | 11

With a place so rich in history there is always something new to discover. During the Pilgrimage Tour the Shelby County Arts Council will open the doors for its newest exhibit, “Shelby County: An Artistic Perspective.” The exhibit will feature fine art photos from local photographers Hank Siegel, Paris Farzad, Rachel Fowler, Stacy Gill Perry and Roger Stephenson. The exhibit will also feature ceramic art by Professor Scott Meyer of the University of Montevallo. The works featured represent

each artist’s perspective of Shelby County. “While working on the Historic Shelby County photography exhibit, I have fallen in love with my hometown again,” Perry said. “The historic relics that I have found while photographing have evoked a feeling of curiosity and longing for days gone by. My hope is that this exhibit will bring the same feelings of wonderment and passion for this beautiful place.” Along with the exhibit visitors are also encouraged to visit other places of interest around Columbiana, including the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington, and the Shelby County Museum and Archives, which will also feature its own exhibit, “The Quilts of Shelby County.” Be sure to stop by the American Village and the University of Montevallo for more historical

What every woman should know about mammograms Story by CRISTA THOMAS, MD Photos CONTRIBUTED
A
s the newest physician at OB/ GYN Associates of Alabama at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, I’m enjoying the seasonal beauty in my first October in the Magic City. I’m also meeting our patients who have their annual mammography appointments during St. Vincent’s Health System’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month emphasis. Although One Nineteen’s diagnostics department offers mammography services year-round, its October $99 mammogram special encourages women to follow up on their physicians’ recommendations. It also helps me emphasize the facts below, which I hope women will remember in every season. Every woman should be aware. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of American women’s cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society reports that more than 85 percent of women with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Early detection is imperative. Although women who smoke increase their chances, there is no clear way to reduce other women’s risks. They should therefore notify their doctors about anything unusual, get annual clinical exams and follow physicians’ screening advice.
Crista Thomas, MD Self-awareness saves lives. Seventy percent of American women under 50 find their own cancer. That’s why I suggest patients practice what the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology calls “breast self-awareness,” learning what is normal for them. Anyone finding something abnormal should alert their physician, to address any concern. Remember your 40th birthday. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists urge women to begin routine annual mammograms at age 40. Women with genetic risks or other concerns may
start earlier. Mammograms are much like annual exams and screening pap smears. Each is uncomfortable, but essential to health. Contrary to some fears, mammogram compression does not damage tissue. Its radiation is very minimal. Women with dense breasts have higher risks. Women with dense breast tissue not only carry a higher cancer rate, but also experience detection challenges. They should therefore practice selfawareness and expect some mammogram call-backs, since their scans may be more difficult to read. Don’t fear call-backs. Our goal is to find problems when they’re tiny and treatable. If there’s an imaging blur that can’t be seen clearly, women will be called back for another scan. Our radiologists tell us only about 10 percent of those women will actually have cancer. October is a great time to celebrate women. That’s why this month we’re emphasizing mammograms and more. To register for your $99 mammogram at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, call 408-6450. Crista Thomas, MD, is a physician at OB/ GYN Associates of Alabama at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. l October 2014 | 13

imberline Golf Club is excited to announce the arrival of the Hank Johnson School of Golf. Head Golf Professional Joe Kruse approached the instruction staff at the Hank Johnson School of Golf to grow the game in and around Calera and the surrounding Birmingham communities. “The addition of the Hank Johnson School of Golf has propelled Timberline to the forefront of golf instruction in the Birmingham area,” Kruse said. “If someone wants to learn how to play golf or wants to improve their game we want them to immediately think of Timberline and the Hank Johnson School of Golf. Hank and his staff have very high standards with their instruction,

personalization, and professionalism, just as we have for all of our staff at Timberline.” The school of golf began this summer by launching four summer camps beginning the first week of June. Scott Hassee, lead instructor for the school, loves kids and has a strong reputation for building excellent junior golf programs. “I love teaching golf, especially to juniors. Kids are a sponge. Give them the right information and they’ll improve, make it fun and they’ll play for a lifetime,” Hassee said. Teaching alongside him in the camps were Kruse PGA and the school’s Associate Instructor, Corey Fortner PGA and recent graduate of the PGA Golf
Management program at Mississippi State University. Overseeing all of these programs as the director of instruction is the founder of the school of golf, Hank Johnson. Johnson has been teaching the game for over 50 years, receiving dozens of accolades over that time, including the prestigious PGA Instructor of the Year award in 2004. The Hank Johnson School of Golf will continue their strong start this fall by offering two weekly junior golf programs after school beginning in September. To setup lessons or to sign up for these programs visit Timberlinegc.com or Hankjohnsonschoolofgolf.com or call 205.529.8546. l

The Farm Life A fourth generation of Bakers maintains the family farm in Harpersville

he Old Baker farm in Harpersville has seen a lot of changes in the past 100plus years, but one thing remains the same: The Baker name is still on the
mailbox. Jerry Baker, along with his cousin, Sean Baker are the fourth generation to live on and work the farm bought by their great-grandfather sometime around 1891, and though they no longer hoe cotton all day or till crops with a team of mules, their roots are just as firmly planted in the rich 30 | ShelbyLiving.com
Shelby County soil as were their ancestors’. The story of how the Bakers came to own the land is the stuff of legend. The story of how they are still here today, over 100 years later, is the story of hard work, dedication, a passion for farming and some smart business decisions. Perhaps the first indication of the Baker business acumen came around 1887 when Jerry Baker’s great-grandfather bought a section of property that would become the Old Baker Farm. “It was actually attached to the property where we are today,” Jerry said. “Later, around 1901, this land came up for sale. Well, my great-

granddaddy didn’t waste any time getting a letter off to my granddad, who lived in Centre at the time. The letter said, ‘You better get on the first train over here and come buy this place before somebody beats you to it. The best farm in the county is up for sale.” Those words have proven prophetic and the letter’s sense of urgency well heeded. The property boasts two creeks, 14 springs and soil rich enough to raise everything from cotton and corn to pumpkins and Christmas trees. And, kids! “Granddaddy raised 12 children,” said Jerry, who has 12 grandchildren of his own. “They had 14 people at the dinner table.” His father Earl was one of those sitting at the table. According to his son the elder Baker was active in running the farm until just a few years ago when he died at the age of 101. “He was a wonderful man, a great example to live by and a hard worker. He farmed with mules on this place for 60 years … wouldn’t even think of buying a tractor,” laughed Jerry. “Finally, somebody talked him into it and lo’ and behold he couldn’t get over how much more he could do with a tractor than a mule. I was about five years old at the time and, of course, I cried, because we had to get rid of the mules. They were some of my best friends.” Looking back over the years Jerry recalls, “We used to grow everything here. At one time, we had 1,300 acres of row October 2014 | 33

crops and 100 acres of cotton. We used to have everything. We’ve had cows, pigs, and at one time, we had a thousand chickens. We were really in the egg business. Then, came 1975 when it came out that eggs were bad for you. That almost put us out of business. We nearly lost our farm.” That’s when the Bakers knew in order for the farm to survive, they had to change directions. “We didn’t have the availability of the land we once had, and some of the older ones that we leased the land from passed away. It got too expensive to grow the crops and we didn’t have quite enough land to pay for expense of growing it and still come out on the other end, explained Jerry The diversification he and his cousin Sean Baker decided on is a relatively new brand of farming in Alabama called agri-tourism, which according to Sean is “a catchy name that means bringing people in from outside the farm like school and church groups and the general public.” Visitors can enjoy activities at the old Baker farm just about year round, from picking pumpkins during the fall festival days to cutting 34 | ShelbyLiving.com

down their own Christmas trees. The Bakers also offer Cowboy Days and Living History weekends. Sean gives credit for opening up the farm to groups and the general public to his cousin, Jerry. “He said, ‘Hey, let’s try this, and sure enough it worked!” “Both our dads thought we were crazy when they heard the word agri-tourism, laughed Sean. “Their reaction was, ‘Why in the world would anybody pay to come out and look at a pasture?’” But, pay they do. Jerry estimates the farm has seen about half a million visitors since their agritourism business began more than 20 years ago, but lest anybody be confused by the numbers, Sean insists the agri-tourism business is still just a way to make ends meet and keep the farm going. “People come out and see all the people here, sometimes as many as 7,400 a weekend and they think, ‘Wow, they must really be making a killing.’ It has worked well, but still, this is an expensive venture,” he said. And, like any other farming operation the success or failure of a particular venture might lie solely in the hands of Mother Nature. For example, last year there was disaster in the pumpkin patch.

“We lost the whole crop,” Jerry said. “We had too much rain and they all just rotted on the vine. That meant we had to truck load in thousands of dollars worth pumpkins and that sure doesn’t do much for your bottom line.” Though only a handful of Bakers still live on the farm these days, with many having moved away and gone on to other professions, the remaining Bakers know they can always count on their family to come back when they are needed, especially on those busy event weekends. “Everybody on the family says sure we’ll pitch in,” Sean said. “We’re a close bunch and actually like each other.” As for Jerry and Sean, they both say they can’t imagine any life other than farming. “We’re just trying to offer people something that has gone away,” Jerry said, “a touch of the past. You hardly ever see any old farms anymore. We’re offering something that’s unique that we want to share with people at a reasonable cost, a real old farm.” l

n Montevallo, just off County Road 24, sycamore and Tupelo gum trees shade a simple wooden boardwalk, which runs through the Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve. “The Swamp” immediately intrigued Dr. Mike Hardig when he joined the University of Montevallo as a professor of biology. The property was donated to the university in 1998, and Hardig—a botanist by trade—spent the following summer exploring the area. “In the summer of ’99, I got myself some boots and a big stick—I’d heard about the Cottonmouths—and the first day, I walked in and I began exploring the swamp and it was a great treat,” Hardig said. “I’d never seen anything like it. It’s beautiful and the vegetation is amazing. I started thinking about how we could use the swamp to further our education program without dragging people through the muck with hip boots on.” To that end, Hardig and others with the university decided to build a boardwalk where visitors could enjoy the swamp from above. With federal money obtained by Congressman Spencer Bachus, the university constructed the first phase of the boardwalk, which spans 760 feet “about 6 or 7 years ago,” Hardig said. To convince the congressman of the importance of the area, Hardig created conceptual artwork and spoke about the ecological importance of the swamp, but the turning point in the presentation came at the end of the day.

“We brought them all out here and had them take off their jackets and put on boots, and we drug them into the swamp,” Hardig recalled. “They were amazed by the beauty as pretty much everyone is who comes out here. That’s how we got the federal money.” A year ago, the university added approximately 400 feet of new boardwalk to make the trail extend more than 1,000 feet. The entire length of boardwalk is ADA compliant, enabling all visitors to enjoy the beauty of the swamp safely and view a myriad of plant and animal species that call the classic upland hardwood swamp home. Beavers, otters, wild turkeys, red-shouldered fox and all sorts of owls can be spotted in the area, which also shelters endangered plant species. The eared coneflower, a delicate yellow plant that grows abundantly in the swamp, is currently being considered by the Fish and Wildlife Service for listing as an endangered species, and within Alabama the plant is considered “critically impaired,” with five or fewer viable populations of the plant in the state. listed endangered plant species, grows near a spring on the property. Though it cannot be viewed from the boardwalk, the narrow-leaved perennial produces bright yellow flowers and is “very healthy,” Hardig said. The cardinal flower—a tall, thin plant with red blossoms— also dots the terrain and though it is not rare, it is a favorite among the hummingbirds that live in the area. A giant egret, frog and dragonfly—designed and sculpted by University of Montevallo art students led by Professor Ted Metz—are also nestled among the trees at the mouth of the trail. The sculptures are made out of raw, recycled steel and are not coated or protected in any way, so the evolution of the sculptures mimics what happens naturally within the ecosystem of the swamp. “It’s the idea of nutrients, elements returning to the soil to be incorporated by the plants and then by the animals and back into the soil,” Hardig said. “They will rust, oxidize and return to the soil.” In 2006, the entire ecological preserve was threatened when the Middle Tennessee Land Development Company proposed a limestone quarry off Smokey Road, just adjacent to the swamp. “We knew it would cause the swamp to go dry,” Hardig said, so the University of Montevallo Foundation and the University of Montevallo filed a lawsuit against the company. After a two-week trial, Shelby County Judge Hub Harrington ruled in favor of the university’s contention that the quarry would be an unreasonable use of ground water and a private nuisance.

“(The quarry) would have irrevocably damaged the swamp,” Hardig said. “The lawsuit was a major opportunity for everyone (in Montevallo) to pull together to a common end.” Now safe from development, Ebenezer Swamp plays host to a number of educational groups, including Shelby County Youth Leadership groups, boy scout and brownie scout troops and Meadow View Elementary students. Plans to expand the educational aspect of the swamp are currently in the works, with a visitor’s center next on the agenda. The center will have terrarium with reconstructed habitats and hands-on educational devices, as well as living collections featuring animals native to the swamp. “Want to see a Cottonmouth? You could actually get up close,” Hardig explained. For Hardig, sharing the wonders of the swamp with students is a primary goal. “I remember when I was a little kid going on a fieldtrip to a little park…I think it was a major point in my life, and what I want to do with this is create that experience for other kids coming up,” Hardig said. “Maybe the next E.O. Wilson will get their spark of interest here at Ebenezer Swamp.” l

Breathe Easy: Creating a Safe Environment
Newsletter
In a country where chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death, lung safety strategies are of the utmost importance. The lungs are very resilient and will last a lifetime if you take proper precautions and safety measures. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you breathe easy. Deep Breaths: Begin and end your day by taking slow, deep breaths in a clean air environment. The lung is a large organ so when you take a full breath cycle, your chest should expand all the way down to your abdomen. When you exhale try to push as much air out as possible. Taking as few as five to ten deep cleansing breaths will increase blood flow, oxygen levels and give you more energy. Incorporate Exercise: The
same exercises that help your heart can also benefit your respiratory function. Moderate walking, jogging, running, swimming and cycling can all improve your cardiorespiratory function when you remember to breathe well while participating in these activities. No Smoking: The number one enemy of respiratory health is cigarette smoke. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke can be even worse and that thirdhand smoke, just being in the same environment with smokers, is dangerous. Outdoor Pollution: Be aware of the air quality in your outdoor environments. Ozone and other pollutants can make being outside an unhealthy activity. You can view the U.S. government website, www. airnow.gov to get explanations
of Air Quality Index (AQI) numbers and up-to-date information about air quality in your area. Indoor Pollution: Take measures to keep the air clean while you are indoors. Have your house inspected for radon exposure. Be aware of mold, pet dander and smoke from the fireplace. There are also harsh chemicals found in air fresheners, candles, aerosol sprays and household cleaners. Start taking preventative measures in your household by using items that clean your air such as beeswax candles, charcoal filters, plants, and non-toxic cleaners. Improve ventilation by changing air filters often and by opening windows on clean air days. Fresh Air at Work: Make sure you wear protective equipment when working in dusty environments or with chemicals. When at all possible choose safe products
with low levels of chemical exposure. You can find a list of the 10 Worst Jobs for Your Lungs at www.health.com. Eat Your Greens: Research published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that eating cruciferous vegetable foods high in antioxidants, not supplements, can greatly decrease the risk of lung cancer. Examples of these foods are broccoli, bok choy, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and arugula. Laura A. Reeder, C.H.E.S, A.A.H.C.C. St.Vincent’s Wellness Services

Ambassador of the Month Congratulations to Maggie Braden for earning the designation as Ambassador of the Month. Maggie is the membership director at the Pelham YMCA and began with the Birmingham YMCA in 2005. The YMCA believes that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve through youth development programs such as healthy living and social responsibility. Her role in youth development includes member recruitment and engagement as well as awarding scholarships to families in the community who otherwise would not be able to participate due to financial constraints. Becoming an Ambassador for the Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce has enabled her to extend the YMCA’s reach through networking with a wide variety of people, businesses and other community
agencies. Maggie was born in Birmingham, attended school in Snellville, GA and returned to Alabama to attend Auburn University for two years finishing her nursing degree at UAB. She is married to Nick and they have five four-legged children, all rescues! In her free time she enjoys spending time outdoors, anything associated with college football (War Eagle) and relaxing with her husband, family and friends. October 2014 | 55 Shelbychamber.org
