Congratulations to Casey Bentley for earning the honor of September Ambassador of the Month. Casey is Vice President at the Rux Carter Insurance Agency. He was born and raised in Columbiana, AL. In 2000, he graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he spent seven years working as an Account Executive for a National IT Services company in Birmingham, AL and then in St. Louis, MO. He returned “home” in the summer of 2007 and began working in the family business. Rux Carter Insurance has been serving the insurance needs of families and business in the Shelby County area since 1906! They specialize in writing insurance for both personal and commercial needs. Casey is an active member of the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents Association having served on several committees and is currently the President of the Alabama Young Agents Association. In 2011 he was selected as the Alabama Young Agent of the Year. Since he started with the agency he has received multiple insurance designations including CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) and CLCS (Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist) in addition to completing the nationally recognized State Auto Insurance Pacesetters program. He and his wife, Danette, have 2 children and are active members at Riverchase United Methodist Church.

4 Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Green Business Program Recognizes Certified Green Business Companies The Greater Shelby Chamber recently launched the Green Business Program and is excited to congratulate the following companies on being approved as a Certified Green Business: FlexDigital, Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Trash Taxi of Alabama, and Vital Records Control of Alabama. The Chamber’s Existing Business & Industry Work Group reviewed the applicants and collectively approved these companies at their September meeting. The Green Business application is based on a point system in the categories of Waste Prevention,
Recycling, Purchasing, Energy Conservation, Transportation, Water Conservation, and Pollution. Each applicant has to receive a minimum of 20 total points to be designated as a “Certified Chamber Green Business”. The purpose of this program is to recognize
Shelby County businesses that are committed and engaged in environmentally responsible operations and practices, also known as “green” business practices. What’s more, the program will recognize environmentally safe and sustainable business practices and operations
businesses undertake to ensure that Shelby County is environmentally healthy and viable. We will be recognizing all certified companies at the annual Industry Appreciation Event. If your company is engaged in green practices and is interested in applying for the Chamber’s Green Program Certification, the application can be found on the Chamber’s website home page, www. shelbychamber.org. Tee It Up “Fore!” Education at the Chamber’s Annual Golf Scramble on November 1 The Chamber’s Annual Golf Scramble is scheduled for Friday, November 1 at Eagle Point Golf Club. This year’s tournament will help fund vital education and workforce development programs in the coming year. Registration begins at 7:15AM (with breakfast at 7:30AM) and the scramble tees off with a Shotgun Start at 8:00AM. Lots of prize opportunities will be available for participants including
longest drive, closest to the pin and a putting contest. The entry fee is $600 for a four-person team or $150 for each individual. This fee covers a light breakfast, lunch (provided at the completion of the tournament), greens fees, cart and two drink tickets per person. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue divide and grow without normal control. Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. Breast cancer knows no boundaries - be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location. But there is hope. Thanks to heightened awareness, early detection, improved treatment methods and increased access to breast health services, people have a greater chance of survival than ever before. What began 30 years ago as a promise between two sisters, is now Susan G. Komen 速, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having 2013 Health Focus Sponsor
invested more than $1.9 billion since inception in 1982. The Komen Promise is to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures and in Alabama this promise is put into action every day through the work of dedicated volunteers, a small four-person staff and a volunteer board of directors. The Komen Community Office, located in Homewood, AL, provides a gathering place for supporters to engage in a wide variety of programs, events, volunteer activities and discussions about breast cancer issues in our region. Affiliate - sponsored educational and outreach programs, along with our community grants program, put the Komen Promise into action every day. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the North Central Alabama Affiliate of Susan G. Komen invites you to become involved in many of our wonderful community programs. Annual Safety Awards Scheduled for the October Membership Luncheon Join us on October 30 for the Annual Safety Awards luncheon, sponsored by First Commercial Bank, as we honor public safety officials from throughout Shelby County. Each year we are privileged to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence in public safety. This is a time when we can personally give
thanks to the fire, police and sheriff personnel, and honor them for the outstanding service and sacrifices they
make each day in keeping our respective communities a safe place to live, work, and play.

6 4th Annual Sporting Clay Shoot November 13 at Selwood Farm The Greater Shelby Chamber is holding its 4th Annual Sporting Clay Shoot on November 13th at Selwood Farm in Alpine. We are calling all Sporting Clay enthusiasts, beginners and experts, to test your skills on the course, designed for pleasure and enjoyment in the great outdoors. Selwood’s fully automated
Sporting Clays course, both challenging and fun, meets the needs of all levels of shooters. “Keeping It Real” Program Launched in Shelby County Schools in September In September, the Greater Shelby Chamber’s Education Work Group, volunteers, and educators began conducting the Keeping It Real Program in the Shelby County Schools. This program is geared toward ninth grade students to increase their awareness of the relationship between educational achievement, cost of living, and responsibilities. The program also teaches students how to budget and manage real world expenses (housing, utilities, transportation, insurance, groceries, childcare, etc.).

The Arc of Shelby County is recognized as the foremost partner with families and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities to support and enhance the quality of their lives.
