September 16 • Pep Rally at 7:00 PM o Presentation of HC Court The Shelby County High School Homecoming Parade will be September 17. As usual, we will have police cars, fire trucks, class banners, spirit trucks, cheerleaders, the SCHS Marching Band, and the SCHS 2010 Homecoming court. We look forward to having groups from your community groups participate. The parade will start at 1:45 pm. Line up for the parade will begin at 1:00 on Pitts Dr. In the past, many participants have tried to line up in parking lots around the softball fields and in Elvin Hill Elementary School’s parking lot. For the safety of our children please do not do this. If you line up anywhere between SCHS and Elvin Hill you will be instructed to move. Also this year, we ask that candy not be thrown from the cars or trailers. Designated walkers from the group on each side of the vehicle may throw candy to the crowd. Get Control of Your Weeds and Help the Beautification Board! In conjunction with the Columbiana Beautification Board, Kellis Vegetation Management, Inc. will be offering one-time professional herbicide applications through October to any business or residence in South Shelby County in exchange for a $100 donation to the Columbiana Beautification Board. As part of this fundraising project, Kellis Vegetation will provide weed control for gravel or paved areas and will address kudzu or other brush issues for South Shelby County businesses and residents, up to 1/4 of an acre or 350 feet of fence line. Weed control services for lawns or other ornamental areas are not being offered. ELVIN HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL What a great way to start off the year, celebrating the news that we had met our AYP goals. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to empower our students with an education that will help them to reach their full potential through an innovative educational system. All of the teachers attended workshops this summer to master new skills and methods. Congratulations to all of our staff for helping our students to be successful and reach their AYP goals. Thank you parents for your efforts and supports and for our big turn out on Math Night/ Open House. Congratulations to the Student Council, who received a state award for their efforts in the Constitution Day Community Service Projects , that were completed by May of last year. Congratulations to Courtney Garner, Shelby County’s New Teacher of the Year, and Joy Porter, Shelby County Teacher of the Year. Congrats to Jenny Lespi for receiving the Fox 6 News Community Hero, Pass it On Award. Every student and staff member has reasons to celebrate and we will mention them as the year goes on. Did you know that our school offers after school Dance/Baton Classes on a daily basis? Karate is also offered here at night and on Saturday. After-School Day Care is available each afternoon. All of these programs are through our Community Education Program. In September, our Elvin Hill Choir will perform at the County Fair on the 21st. Dream Makers Dancers summer travel team will perform on the 22nd. Fall pictures will be made on the 23rd. Check out our Elvin Hill Link on the SCBOE website.
COLUMBIANA MIDDLE SCHOOL PTO will begin its annual fundraiser to help with school purchases September 1. CMS has an updated computer lab thanks to the technology department at the county and the hard work of assistant principal Wesley Hester to set up the lab and distribute the older lab computers to teachers for use in the classroom. Congratulations to Samantha Bailey and the school’s CNP staff for the cafeteria earning a 100 rating during inspection. The school will host its homecoming game Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. against Jemison and its homecoming dance Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 3-5 p.m. Progress reports will be sent home Friday, Sept. 17. Fall pictures will be taken Thursday, Sept. 23.

Family caregiving is about a relationship between many people. Choosing to take charge of your life means you recognize that you are only one member of the caregiving team. Making active choices in your own best interests is not selfish; rather, it is often the most important choice you can make for your entire family. As we travel through life, one thing is for certain, we will meet head-on with “life changes”. It is said, “Life happens while we are busy making plans”. We can try resisting change; however, change is our constant traveling companion – and sometimes an unwelcome guest. Unexpected changes tend to unnerve
us and make us feel uncomfortable – it’s like traveling through uncharted waters with a compass. At times, change can make no sense – it either comes on too quickly or evolves too slowly. As we travel between life changes, it is the unfamiliar road in-between when one route ends and a new route begins when we feel the most uncomfortable. Becoming a family caregiver is one of those life changes which can occur suddenly and without warning, or it can evolve slowly over time. However, regardless of the events which place us in the caregiving role, it is the unfamiliarity of the unchartered waters which cause us the most distress.
We can actively choose to: • Set limits on what we can comfortably achieve without risk to ourselves and our loved ones. • Be flexible and realize as circumstances change so do our choices and abilities. • Allow our loved ones to do as much for themselves as they possibly can so they can maintain a sense of control and self-perceived independence. • Recognize our strengths and acknowledge our limitations. • Learn to say “no”. • Ask for help • Take time for respite. • Always remember, making active choices in your own interest is NOT selfish – rather it is often the most important choice you can make for your entire family.

DRUG FREE MESSAGE The September 2010 message from the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition is: 92.4% of 6th-12th grade Shelby County students reported that their parents feel it would be very wrong for them to use marijuana. Please keep talking to your children about your expectations for them to be drug-free. The Shelby County Drug Free Coalition provides the drug free message each month. The Coalition is a program of Family Connection made up of volunteers who are concerned about and want to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among our youth. Representatives from law enforcement, health agencies, businesses, church and civic groups and Shelby County Schools are part of the Coalition.

News from City Hall Updates to City Web Site!
JOB FAIR FOR MATURE WORKERS (50+)
The City of Columbiana is continuing to enhance the city website (www.cityofcolumbiana.com) with updated content and will be undergoing a re-design to accommodate some new features we are including on the site that should be useful to the residents, businesses and those who are traveling to Columbiana or looking at our city for relocation for business or personal reasons. One of the most recent features added is the Community Bulletin Board which allows residents to submit content for inclusion on the site. An example would be an upcoming local event that would afford you the opportunity to publicize it without any cost. We are hoping that many of our local organizations, churches and schools will utilize this feature to help us help you “get the word out” about community events. We just added the feature this past week and have a couple of events there but anticipate that it will become a fast favorite. The city calendar of events now utilizes the Google calendar application, which gives us greater flexibility in posting events, including the ability to open the item up for internet searches on the web. We will keep you posted about new enhancements to our website but if you haven’t taken a look at the site, please do and let us know if there is something that you would like to see there that we don’t have.

The Salvation Army invites you to participate in the 6th Annual Century of Compassion bike ride. Funds raised from the rides will be used to support The Salvation Army’s youth programs. You will have the opportunity to choose between several different ride distances (listed on the registration form). There will also be a kids ride. This year’s event is being hosted by Bob’s Bikes and supported by other community partners. You will be provided with a t-shirt, water bottle, route map, SAG support, wellstocked rest stops and other goodies. Finally, there wil be a tasty meal waiting on you at the finish line. Registration and check in begins at 5:30AM and the first ride starts at 7:00AM. If you know of any other riders who might be interested, please forward this email to them. It’s back to school already for our local students! September is Library Card Sign-up Month - a time to remind everyone that a library card is the smartest card of all and one of the most important school supplies you can have! So, if you haven’t got yours yet, stop by Columbiana Library soon. Celebrating our freedom to read is observed during the last week of September each year. Banned Books Week, observed since 1982, is an
annual event that reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. The library will have on display many banned and challenged books. If you check out one of these books during Banned Book Week, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a free T-shirt. Be a rebel, check one out!
