T

here are no two ways about it; college football recruiting is a big-time ordeal. Gone are the days when a player who was really talented at the game he loved simply picked a school he liked, signed a scholarship and went there. In this day and age, a recruit’s every waking move seems to be tracked, through TV, social media and the Internet — there’s several websites solely dedicated to following college recruiting classes — resulting in celebrity-like status and sometimes attitude from high school seniors. Four and five-star recruits are often pampered, showered with praise and treated differently than the rest of the team. There is no doubting that Calera’s Ronnie Clark is the hottest prospect Shelby County has seen in some time, and arguably the hottest Calera High has ever seen. His feats on the field at wide receiver and defensive back have left Eagle fans, coaches and college scouts all shaking their heads. Both Auburn and Alabama have expressed a great deal of interest in the 6-foot-3inch, 215-pound player who can do it all, currently listed as a four-star prospect by most scouting services. The kid is a special recruit, indeed. He’s also different from the stereotypical highly ranked prospect, from a different kind of program. Unlike many recruits, Clark didn’t give football much of a thought until he needed an activity to pass the time in a new town. Born in Louisiana, he didn’t play organized football until coming to Alabama in the fourth grade. Clark said he used the game as a way of easing the difficulties of moving to an unfamiliar place. “When I came down here, it was a new environment,” he said. “I was just looking for something just to play. I was going to do some type of karate thing, because I came in late for the football

registration. I started off playing baseball, and then I got into little league football and just loved it ever since.” Clark worked his way up the ranks through middle school ball and onto Calera’s varsity team under Scott Martin, where he started as an eighth grader. “Coach Martin was a great coach,” he said. “Under (him) it was a different routine. We had a lot of guys to play one side of the ball. I would play offense some, then come in at safety.” HEAD OF THE FAMILY In addition to playing football, his ninth grade year he took on another role: head of his family. Clark’s father took a job back in Louisiana which put Ronnie in charge of taking care of his mother and sister while he was gone. It would be a tough task for any high school freshman, but within a year, Ronnie’s sister left to attend college, leaving him to help take care of his mother, who has muscular dystrophy. In other words, he was in charge of taking care of another person as well as maintaining a house — all before he could drive.

Clark said it was tough learning to balance the nature of being a kid with the task he was asked to do. “When I wanted to hang out with my friends and stuff like that, sometimes I couldn’t do it because I had to take care of Mom and do homework,” he said. He said as tough as it was, he felt it only made him stronger as a person. “That put a lot of responsibility on me around the house,” he said. “I think that made me a better man today because it put a lot of pressure on me then. That’s how I think I’m able to handle the pressure the media gives me sometimes.” While Clark was learning how to balance being a high school student with being an adult, he was also learning to adjust on the football field. FACE OF THE EAGLES Martin left the Eagles before Clark’s sophomore year, and in his place stepped Wiley McKeller. McKeller also believed in a high-octane offense and believed in putting the best combination of character and talent on the field as well. He implemented a players development system, designed to help player maximize their potential on the field, and maintain integrity off 2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

of it. “Under Coach McKeller, he cut the slack of a lot of people being on the team,” he said. “We’ve got that group that’s going to go both ways, that’s going to get after it and win football games.” McKeller began to dismiss players who showed no interest in working hard or buying into the team concept. Numbers got low, but it laid the groundwork for younger players to gain experience and make it their team. “They cut a lot of guys that didn’t want to work,” Clark said. “Now we have guys that want to work, that want to win. I think it’s helped us in the long run. We played a lot of young guys my sophomore and junior year. I think that helps, having that experience.” The team was looking for a leader, a player to step up and represent what they were all working toward as a program and help them discover their identity. McKeller said they found their leader with each impressive showing from Clark. “We have a group of guys that paid the price and made the sacrifices to be here, and they’ve got a great leader in Ronnie,” he said. “That can work on both sides; you can have a guy that’s an elitist that guys won’t follow and are somewhat jealous of, or you can have

6

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

a guy that’s that kind of player that they will follow. He’s that guy. He’s a team player from the start. He’s not an individual, and that’s why he’s a great leader for this football team.” As his junior year progressed, he began to gather more and more attention from college scouts, culminating with both Auburn and Alabama offering him football scholarships. By the year’s end, Clark had racked up 1,459 all-purpose yards, 14 touchdowns on offense and 46 tackles as a safety on defense. He also established himself as a top-level recruit, and Calera became one of the programs on the rise in AHSAA Class 4A, as well as a threat to contend for the Region 4 championship. NAME OF THE FUTURE As Clark enters his senior year, neither he nor Calera are flying under the radar. Everywhere he goes, he not only answers questions about the Eagles’ chances during the 2013 season, but also where he will play on the next level. Clark said the attention was tough at first, but he has learned to balance it. “I’m used to it now,” he said. “At first, it got kind of frustrating. It doesn’t make you mad or anything, that’s just how it’s going to be. I’m used to

it. When I have time to talk to them, I talk to them, but I don’t talk to them all the time. It’s not me being mean or anything, it’s just I’m always busy doing other stuff.” He also said that while his college choice is important his main focus is helping Calera take home its first state title in football. “First and foremost, I want to compete for the state championship,” he said. “I want to make that run, and just be that team leader everyone looks up to. I just want our team to be successful, work hard everyday. No slacking around. I want the best for everybody and us to know we put everything out there on the field.” Learning to balance multiple things has been a part of his life for the better part of his life, and Clark said whatever he is doing at the time has his focus, be it football, homework or taking care of the house. Now, with his father back from Louisiana to help him with his senior year, Clark said he will have help going through not only the scholarshipsigning process, but the move to quarterback as well. “You just take it a step at a time each day,” he said. “Sometimes you try to rush things, but you just have to go with the flow, and be cool with everything, and everything will be fine.”

n 2012, Spain Park football had a successful playoff run, reaching the AHSAA Class 6A state quarterfinals with Chip Lindsey wearing a headset and with Nick Mullens under center. Now that Lindsey has joined the coaching staff at Auburn and Mullens is preparing for his freshman season at Southern Mississippi, it is up to former Hoover defensive coordinator Shawn Raney to lead the 2013 Jags toward continuing the legacy set forward by his predecessor. Last year, Spain Park finished with an 8-2 regular season mark; the Jaguars fell to CarverMontgomery after opening the state playoffs with two double-digit wins. Mullens led the Jaguars to their first ever region title, racking up 3,649 yards and 40 touchdowns in his senior campaign. When all was said and done with Mullens’ high school career, he had thrown for the seventh-most career yards in AHSAA history. It’s now up to Raney to find the young man who will fill Mullens’ shoes at Spain Park. “We lost some key components from last year, most importantly Nick Mullens,” Raney said. “No one else has taken a snap for three years.” Raney said the competition for the new Jaguar play-caller is between senior Mickey Forrest and junior Mason Dukes. He is not expecting either one to match Mullens’ stats, but to manage both the passing and rushing aspects of the offense with

8

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

precision. “I don’t think either one of those guys are the same type of guy (as Mullens),” Raney said. “We have to adjust our offense to fit the players that we have.” Raney, a first-time head coach, spent three seasons at Hoover; prior to that, he served a year on the Oak Mountain staff and was a member of Gene Chizik’s staff at Iowa State in 2007 and 2008. Previous posts include UAB and a stint as the defensive coordinator at Butler County Community College in Kansas. “(Being a head coach) has been quite an experience, and something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” he said. “It’s different than what I’m used to.” Raney gets the benefit of his first head coaching job being with a team that won three times as many games as it lost last season. “It’s not like Spain Park was broken,” he said. “Anytime 2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

9

the kids can get used to winning, it’s a good thing.” Regardless of who Raney selects to start at quarterback for Spain Park, he will likely install a runfirst offense, while transferring the defensive knowledge that gave the Buccaneers one of the top defenses in the state to the Jaguars. “Offensively, our identity will be different than it has been the past few years,” Raney said. “We’ll still run the spread offense, either spreading it out to throw it or spreading it out to run. We’ll run to set up the pass instead of passing to set up the run.” A coach fresh from a state championship run, Raney believes his new team is on track to try matching Hoover’s 2012 performance. “Spain Park has tasted that success after last season,” Raney said. “I think we can build off last year. They don’t ever step on the field thinking they won’t win.” The new-look Jags’ quest for another state playoff run begins Aug. 30 with a home game against Austin High School.

s long as there have been teams to play the game of football, rivalries have been an institution in the sport. Two teams with very distinct personalities, communities and fan bases line up for one special game each year and square off for bragging rights for the next 365 days. Every county in the state has rivalries running through it, but few have rivalries of the magnitude that Shelby County does. Every school has a bitter adversary within the county, and although some no longer play due to class realignment, there are four games each year that exemplify what a rivalry game is.

PELHAM vs. THOMPSON — “BATTLE OF U.S. 31” Arguably one of the most heated rivalries in Central Alabama, the Thompson-Pelham rivalry isn’t just a game between two schools; it’s essentially two towns are fighting for bragging rights over each other. There was originally one school for the Alabaster-Pelham-Helena area, Thompson High. All of that changed when Pelham High opened in 1974, sending kids who were originally going to play for Thompson to Pelham. Being just seven miles apart, and each being the embodiment of its respective city, the two quickly became fierce rivals. Even the mayors of the two cities get involved. Each year, a special trophy, constructed from materials pertaining to each town, sits in the winning city’s mayor’s office. Thompson grad and current Pelham resident Eddy Jowers, who saw the need for the rivalry to have something to play for, built the trophy. The base came from pieces of heart pine timber from the original Pelham school, with a bronzed tee from Thompson’s 1982 state championship game appearance holding a bronzed Pelham game ball from one of the early games. On each side of the game ball are wooden spindles taken from the old Buck Creek cotton mill in Alabaster. For the last four years, the trophy has resided at Pelham. “I know it means a lot to the students,” said Pelham Mayor Gary Waters. “I think it’s a healthy rivalry.” That doesn’t stop a little ribbing between Waters and his counterpart, Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon. “As a mayor, I want that trophy,” she said. “We have a good relationship, and it would be nice to (kid) him. I think I’d have my own special table for it.” “No doubt,” said Rick Hayes, who played for the Panthers in the early 1980s. “It was very personal. You knew you were going to be living with them all year. (It was) the one

Battle of U.S. 31 game all year you felt you had to play well in.” Hayes, the Pelham City Council President, said in the early days, the rivalry was one-sided on the scoreboard, but evenly matched in intensity. “The record (didn’t) matter,” he said. “It’s the type of rivalry game you want to experience.” Pelham fell to Thompson every year from the first game in 1978 to 1990, but there was one game in particular in which Hayes’ squad almost pulled off a stunning upset. The Panthers were up late in the game and looking to put the game away when Hayes describes as a “fluke incident,” extinguished their chances. “My senior year, Pelham had never beaten Thompson, and they were the defending state champions,” he said. “We had back-to-back long passes, and were driving late in the third quarter. Our (starting) tailback had his knee blown out (earlier) and our second back got hit right on the ball. It pops up (and Thompson takes it) 75 yards for a touchdown. We fumbled the kickoff, and they scored.” Scott Brakefield, the current Alabaster City Council President

and former Thompson quarterback, said he remembers his games against Pelham for more than just highlights. “I probably got hit the hardest that game,” he said. “It’s a very intense rivalry.” Brakefield still remembers a stinging loss at the hands of the Panthers. “It was my junior year,” he said. “We were down 16-10, putting together a nice drive. We were inside the 15-10, ran a dive play (and) fumbled going in.” “It’s one every year you look forward to,” Brakefield said. Hayes agreed. “I look back, smile and cringe occasionally,” he said with a laugh. SHELBY COUNTY vs. CHELSEA Like the Hatfields and McCoys, there is no love lost between these two neighbors. Less than 20 miles separates the two schools, and the two communities interact on a regular basis. The first game in the series was in 1968, and the two teams played intermittently until 1992, when it became a yearly contest. It’s usually been a game of streaks, with Chelsea 2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

13

winning seven in a row from 1992-98, and Shelby County winning eight in a row from 1999-2006. From 1996-2003 and 2008-2011 the game had extra incentive to win, as a victory in the series meant a region win towards the playoffs. Both schools have coaches who are relatively new to the series. Shelby County’s Brent Smith is in just his second season with the Wildcats but knows the importance of the game. “Without a doubt,” he said. “It’s definitely a big game for our kids and community. I definitely saw a difference in our kids Chelsea week.” Smith said he felt the rivalry was fueled by just how interwoven the Shelby County and Chelsea fans were. “I think it’s a little bit proximity,” he said. “All our kids know their kids, and kids don’t want to lose to their buddy.” Chelsea head coach Chris Elmore is brand new to the series, as he will be coaching his first season at the school. Even so, he said he knew just how important the game against the Wildcats was. He said it wasn’t necessarily the first thing brought up to him, but soon figured out how important the game is to the players and fans. “I understand how big a game it is,” he said. “It’s one of those deals where it can make or break a

14

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

season.” Elmore said the game stands out as an important matchup. “I know it’s big (to the kids),” he said. “(They’re) the biggest rival we’ve got. Shelby County is the one game on schedule you look at and say ‘That’s our rival.’ People in Chelsea know people in Columbiana.” Elmore also said he enjoyed playing a rival as the last game because although losing could hurt a playoff-bound team, it made the game mean even more to end the season on a strong note. “Playing a rival, no matter the situation, there’s going to be interest,” he said. “To me, we put too much time (in) to go out and play a meaningless game.” Smith agreed. “I think it’s good when you play at the end,” he said. “(It’s) a playofflike game. (It can) get you ready for playoffs.” CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN vs. COOSA VALLEY Shelby County not only boasts some of the best rivalries in the AHSAA, it also can lay claim to one of the most fiercely contested battles in the Alabama Independent Schools Association as well. Coosa Valley Academy in Harpersville and Cornerstone

Christian School in Columbiana have squared off in heated contests on the gridiron since Cornerstone first fielded a team in 2000. The series is noted for having some of the fiercest on-field action in the state, often resulting in high-scoring shootouts and nail-biting finishes, such as a 21-20 Coosa win in 2002 and a 30-26 Cornerstone win in 2008. Only 15 miles separate the two schools, so the schools naturally formed a rivalry. “I think it’s a natural function of two private schools within a half-hour of each other,” said CCS Headmaster Jay Adams. “Part of it is so many kids know each other.” CVA Headmaster Pam Lovelady agreed. “A lot of our students are friends with theirs,” she said. “It’s always been fun.” The close proximity and the AISA membership have led to a family-like relationship between the two schools, Adams said. “(They’re) always hard fought games,” Adams said. “(It’s) sort of natural, you play harder against your brother in the driveway than anyone else in the world.” Lovelady echoed the sentiment. “When you’re in a private school association, there’s a special bond,” she said. “I think the week we play Cornerstone the kids are very excited. The whole spirit becomes intense. God has blessed both Coosa Valley and Cornerstone with great kids.” HOPE CHRISTIAN VS. EVANGEL — “THE SKY BOWL” A common misconception about eight-man football is that because the fields are shorter and there are less players, the intensity is lacking. To prove nothing could be further from the truth, one needs to look no farther than the Evangel-Hope Christian matchup each year. The two homeschool associations are perennial Alabama Christian Sports Conference football powerhouses, and are two of the favorites each year to take home the ACSC crown.

The rivalry started when Evangel spun off of Hope, a move that originally led to some hard feelings between the two. As both schools began play in eight-man football, they were traveling to Georgia and other places just for games. Current Hope head coach and athletic director Tony Nafe said logistics and common sense led him to approach Evangel officials about letting bygones be bygones. “I basically went to their administration and I just said ‘It seems silly to drive to Macon when there’s a team down the road,’” he said. “It became an instant rivalry, but not any rancor.” Within a short period of time, it became the most important game on the schedule for both squads. As the rivalry grew in intensity, several close to it thought the winner should have something to show for a victory. They came up with the idea of a helmet painted half with Evangel’s colors and logo and half with Hope’s. The game became dubbed as the

Cornerstone vs. Coosa Valley “Sky Bowl,” as each team’s mascot — Hope is the Eagles and Evangel the Lightning — spends its time in the air. Clayton said the trophy only added more incentive to win. “It’s one cool trophy,” he said. It always seems to intensify practice leading up to the game.” The fact the two schools not only play in the regular season but can face each other in the state and national playoffs just makes the stakes even higher.

Despite the intensity of the rivalry, both schools are fans of each others. When they both make trips to the national playoffs, it’s not unusual to see one cheering for the other. “Regardless of rivalry, everyone shows character,” Clayton said. “We’re all one family in Christ. (There’s) a lot more to life than playing football.” Nafe agreed. “We’re there in the stands,” he said. “I think it’s a testament to see two rival schools pull for each other.”

t was tale of two teams for the Lions in 2012; there was the squad that lost its quarterback in the preseason to a broken collarbone and struggled to a 4-6 regular season, then there was the team that took a losing record into the playoffs and went on a tear, making it all the way to the semifinals before falling to St. Pauls. With quarterback Will Edwards and running back Victor Jerald both back at full health, along with a hungry defense, Briarwood seeks to build off the success at the end of last season and make an even deeper run in the postseason.

Quarterback Senior Will Edwards will return for a

second starting season under center. His senior leadership and decision making could prove to be a key factor in the Lions’ success this season, as he will no longer have go-to receiver Daniel Robert as an option anymore, following Robert’s graduation. He is one of two returning starters on offense for Briarwood, and is looking to rebound from a short 2012, as he sat out most of the season with a broken collarbone.

Running Backs Victor Jerald figures to be the main rushing threat for Briarwood, and is coming off a broken foot last season. The speedy senior will move into the starting role, replacing Regan White. Jerald will be joined in the backfield

by fellow senior Luke Cunningham, who will provide another option in the running game.

Receivers There’s no denying the graduation of Daniel Robert is a huge blow for the Lions, but all is not lost in the receiving corps. The other returning starter on offense is senior Brayden Housel, who will step into the leading receiver role. He will be joined by fellow seniors Andrew Schaper and Blythe Woods.

Offensive Line The Lions look to completely restructure their offensive line, as not one starter returns. Jake Bracewell will take over at center, and will be joined by

Defensive Line Bracewell and will play both ways, as he will fill a spot on the D-line. Replacement is the name of the game on both sides of the trenches for the Lions, as they look to fill the rest of the line with senior Daniel Scott, Landon Donahoo and Jacob Shirley.

Linebackers Ethan Simmons returns in his role at middle linebacker after a strong 2012 season, where he recorded more than 200 tackles and was named to the AllState team. He will be surrounded by Collier Smith and Tim Roberson, both seniors, who seek to fill the opening left by the graduated Jordan Carroll.

Secondary Chandler Wilkins, who handled quarterback duties last season while Edwards was injured, will take a spot in the secondary, as will Blake Coggins, John Rutledge and Jacob Lamb. The defensive secondary features the most juniors of any group on the team with three.

fter spending the majority of 2012 quietly putting together a strong season and a playoff berth, the Calera Eagles find themselves as a favorite for the AHSAA Class 4A Region 4 title entering 2013. The Eagles lose quarterback Zack Reneau, but will turn the keys to the offense over to noted playmaker Ronnie Clark, who moves from receiver. Clark will lead a high-octane offense that features weapons like receiver Jordan Bishop and mobile offensive linemen like Tyler Pritchett. The team is focused not only at a chance for the Region title, but a deep playoff run as well.

inexperienced quarterback, McKeller turns to the face of the Eagles, Ronnie Clark, to take over the helm of the spread option offense. Clark makes the move from wide receiver in hopes that his natural athletic ability provides a spark to keep the offense dynamic.

in production for the Eagles. What they lose in Clark’s sure-handedness they will make up for in speed, as according to the staff, Bishop is the fastest player on the team. He also is no slouch at catching the ball either, as he set a school record for catches and receiving touchdowns in 2012. Junior Frank Thomas will provide depth at the position.

Offensive Line Despite the hype surrounding Clark, and the record-setting year Bishop had in 2012, McKeller said the strength of the offense is found on the offensive line. While they lost four seniors, the coaching staff expects the line to be stout. Kris King is the lone senior of the group, and will lead juniors Ethan Thompson, Ty James (who moves from defensive line) and Braxton Stokes

as well as sophomore Tyler Pritchett (a Rivals Top 250 Underclassmen Challenge participant) in the effort to give Clark enough time to find Tyes, Bishop or keep it himself.

Defensive Line The Eagles lose seniors Titus Adams, Danny Diaz and Josh Wood to graduation and Ty James to move to the offensive live. McKeller will look to players to step up to make a name on the defensive line, as Brian Stone is the only senior in the trenches. He will be joined by junior Dylan Redding and a host of hungry players looking to earn a starting spot.

Linebackers The linebacking corps will receive a complete change of staff, as the group suffers a huge loss in the graduation of three-year starter Sheldon Nixon, the middle linebacker and leader of the Eagle defense. What they lose in Nixon’s experience and leadership, they make up for in senior Coby Mize’s physicality. Mize, a CHS wrestler with two state titles, will be joined by juniors

Lane Johnson and Garrett Reddin, who moves to linebacker after being an allcounty defensive lineman in 2012.

Secondary While the D-line and the linebacker corps feature players who are short on experience, the defensive secondary features a group of seniors looking to anchor the Eagle defense. Ronnie Clark will return to the secondary, joined by cover specialist Henry Davis, James Gayden and Daillion Kennedy.

he Hornets moved into AHSAA Class 6A last season and are now in their second year of play at the state’s highest level, CHS must transition to a new coaching staff. Longtime coach Wade Waldrop departed for James Clemens after six years at Chelsea, with former Hueytown coordinator Chris Elmore taking over. It is the first head coaching job for Elmore, who will rely on the experience of returning starters and 22 seniors to lead the way.

Quarterback Senior Trent Hagin returns for a second year under center, piloting offensiveminded Elmore’s Multiple Pro-I formation offense. Hagin passed for 903

Running Backs The Hornets face a big loss in the departure of Julius McCall, and will look to senior Aki Coles to step up and provide a ground threat. Coles logged 245 yards in 2012, scoring 4 rushing touchdowns. He will be joined by sophomore A.J. Jones and senior Austin Washington, who makes the move back to running back after a year a wide receiver. The three will be used frequently in Elmore’s system.

Receivers

The Hornets will need new faces to step up and establish a presence in the receiving game, as Washington’s move to the backfield and McCall’s graduation leave CHS without their two leading receivers, as well J.R. Appling. Austin Chadwick, Brock Campbell, Josh Pugh and Conner Alder will all look to make a name for themselves catching the football for the Hornets.

Offensive Line Senior leadership is the name of the game with the CHS offensive line. The Hornets lose Darian Golden, Jonathan Rush and Austin Bratton to graduation, but turn to returning seniors James Calhoun, Shane Sibert and Daniel Fraunfelder, Troy Marshall and Micah

Secondary McLaughlin to anchor the offense. Marshall, who is 6’3 and 285 is attracting attention from several D-I schools. The tandem of he and Sibert are integral to the offense’s performance.

Defensive Line

The CHS secondary took a huge hit with the departures of Appling and McCall, but will have senior leadership in the form of returning starter Taylor Martindale. He will be joined by Chase Wilson, Michael Waller and Austin Washington, who will play both ways for the Hornets.

The Hornets lose Shane Paramore, Zack Van Der Geest, Will Roddell and Chase Parker, and look to Darrell Foster, Parker Langois and Adam Holliday and to step up and lead the battle in the trenches on defense. T

he Coosa Valley Rebels are a different-looking team from a year ago in more ways than one. Second-year head coach Arlton Hudson put the team through a rigorous offseason weight training program with an emphasis on getting stronger, with results to the coaching staff ’s liking. The Rebels have several new faces, as a vast majority of the team comes via transfers in the offseason. Hudson, who is in his 28th year of coaching, looks to improve upon the Rebels’ 4-7 record from a year ago.

Quarterbacks With Bradley Harvell graduated, Zach Spratlin and Blake Gossett are both hoping to gain the starting role. Gossett showed a great deal of promise in the spring, but Spratlin, who transferred from Talladega, has also demonstrated

28

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

strong playmaking abilities. The battle for the starting spot won’t likely be settled until the end of fall practice.

Running Backs Bradley Carroll makes the transition to running back from a backup role at quarterback last season. He will be joined by Ryan Garrett, a transfer from Childersburg, who will take on the role of fullback. Senior Niko Teofilo will be used in many roles on offense, and will likely see a few snaps in the backfield. Grant Lovelady will provide depth. The design of the Rebels’ multiple offense will use each in various situations throughout the year.

Receivers The newest addition to the receiving game is actually an old face. Michael Mims returns to football after focusing

on baseball the past two seasons following an injury. He brings both speed and steady hands to the position, as does Colton Pate, a transfer from Lincoln. Trey Dubose, who comes to the team from Pell City, and Childersburg transfer Walker Holmes will provide depth for an already strong group.

Offensive Line College prospect Charles Wilson will be the anchor up front for the Rebels. The 6’3, 305-pounder has great feet and will provide a huge boost on the line. He will be joined up front by sophomore Colton Cain, juniors Anthony Eads and Rowe Fredrick and Talladega transfer Jessie Crombley, a senior. Ryan Brooks will spend time on the line as well as some time in the backfield at fullback.

Niko Teofilo

offense. Junior Rowe Frederick and senior Grant Lovelady will also vie for playing time.

Secondary

Defensive Line The Rebels will implement a singleplatoon system, as Wilson will play on the defensive line as well as the offensive. Eads, Crombley and Holmes will all join him on the d-line. The Rebels are looking for depth on the line, and hope Holmes can provide another lineman to use in their 3-5 system.

Linebackers The Rebel linebackers might be the biggest beneficiary of the strength and conditioning program, as they have improved speed and strength headed into the year. Carroll will make the move to linebacker after serving in the secondary last year. He will be joined by Brooks, as both will play on offense and defense. Garrett will round out the group, splitting time between linebacker on defense and fullback on

Teofilo will provide senior leadership for the defensive backs, as he will most likely serve at safety. Chris Malone will also serve in a coverage role, although his exact position has yet to be determined. Dubose will join the fold, as will Pate, as the Rebels look to use their speed to give them an edge in the coverage game.

Special Teams The Rebels have a weapon in Zach Sharp, the senior placekicker. He comes into the season having captured the Auburn Kicking Academy’s kickoff contest, nailing a shot more than 70 yards to capture the title. This, combined with Sharp winning the field goal portion of the camp a year ago with two kicks over 60 yards, gives the Rebels an advantage on offense.

ornerstone comes into the 2013 season looking to rebound from a 5-6 record in 2012. The Chargers have a mix of senior leadership and inexperienced youth. Tim Warren will be the team’s jack-of-all-trades, playing several positions on offense. He, along with Dalton Fortner, will provide leadership for an untried but talented offensive line. If the offensive line can gel early, the Chargers should figure to challenge for a spot in the AISA playoffs.

Quarterbacks Cornerstone will keep a dualquarterback system in place, but will replace the components. Junior Ian Briggs and senior Tim Warren will

take over for the graduated Adrian Young and Sterling Reither. Warren will play several positions for the Chargers, so Briggs will see quite a few snaps under center.

Running Backs Junior Michael Bevard will take over the running duties from B.J. Smith. Bevard, a 225-pound bruiser back, will figure to take a key role in the Chargers’ double wing offense. The Chargers are seeking a second punch in the running game to help take some of the load off Bevard and hope Heath Garrett can provide it. Trevor Howell will also be utilized.

Receivers When Warren isn’t taking snaps on

offense, he will be a big receiving threat for the Chargers. Dylan Brantley and Wesley Brown also return for the CCS offense this season, albeit in much larger roles. Heath Garrett will also play a role in the passing game in addition to taking snaps in the backfield.

Offensive Line Senior Dalton Fortner will, in the words of CCS head coach Tim Smith, be the workhorse on the offensive line. Fortner is the undisputed leader of a very young group, and the Chargers’ success could depend on how quickly they grow up around him. He will be joined by juniors Lance Martin, Austin Andrews and Alex Matzke as well as eighth grader

vangel was a force to be reckoned with in 2012; despite opening the season 2-2 with a tough loss at the hands of rival Hope Christian, the Lightning reeled off six straight wins. ECS avenged the early season loss to Hope in the ACSC Championship game, capturing the conference title. Essentially the same team returns this season, as the ECS senior class is made up of an unprecedented 16 seniors. Each wish to end their careers with another title, and all signs point to another showdown with Hope to decide the conference title again.

36

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

Quarterbacks Junior Andrew Thompson will start at quarterback again this season, after spending most of the season under center last year. While young, Thompson displayed poise last season and looks to improve even more this season. Nate Scott is available to run the offense if needed, but will be used as a running back mostly. Junior Mason Murphy will provide depth at the position.

Running Backs The Lightning have three running

backs at their disposal, all of which bring senior leadership to the table. Scott will reprise his role as running back for the Lightning. While Scott was the go-to-guy for a large portion of the season last year, he is not the only option. Pete Sullivan will also play a big part in the running game. Grant Webster and Murphy look to play a key role as well.

Receivers As is the case with the running game, the receiving corps will be made up of senior experience and leadership. Josh Letson steps into a key starting role, as

does Caleb Hoge and Clay O’Neal. The combination of senior leadership and playmaking ability from each serves as a huge advantage for the Lightning.

Offensive Line Seniors Aaron Clayton and J.D. Hyde return for one more campaign up front for Evangel. The two started as juniors, and give Thompson a great deal of pass protection. Fellow senior Cameron Kemp will join the fold. Juniors Tyler Byrd, B.J. Gilchrist and Matthew Ezell will provide depth.

Defensive Line Sam Stockman enters his third season as a starter on the defensive line. Byrd will join him up front, and is one of only a handful of juniors starting for the Lightning. Letson will also serve on the line. Noah Kissick will spend time at defensive end and provide depth, as will nose guard Ben Wesson.

Linebackers Clayton and Webster will pick up where they left off last season, starting at linebacker. The senior duo will

lead a fierce defense, which will see Pete Sullivan also join the fray in the defensive backfield. Collin Carr, Dru Bell and Nate Scott will provide depth at the position.

2013 EVANGEL SCHEDULE

Secondary Junior Mason Murphy will start at linebacker, and looks to learn from fellow defensive back Clay O’Neal. O’Neal, a senior, returns as a starter. Davis Adair, David Shepard, Luke Smoke, Rick Remetich and Caleb Daniels will all play roles in the coverage game for Evangel.

erennial ACSC powerhouse Hope Christian loses several key components off a team that fell one game short of a NACA Division 1 national championship last year. Charles Streets, Ben Nafe and Andrew Whitson are all gone, but the talent is not. Head coach Tony Nafe returns, as do a great deal of young players hungry to avenge a loss in the state championship game to rival Evangel, as well as take home a national title.

Quarterbacks The Eagles have two players capable of playing the quarterback position in Reid Allen and Dillon Thompson. The two will battle it out in fall practice to decide who will start opening night. Even once the starter

40

is decided, there is still a chance the two will be used in a dual-quarterback system. Cannon Fuqua and Juan Cueller provide depth at the position.

Running Backs

Fuqua and Weston Howe will be utilized as well. The Eagles boast several young players who will look to gain experience, including Barry Calamusa and Ethan Stewart.

Senior Timothy Bell returns, and will provide steady hands for receptions out of the backfield. Fellow senior Ben Friedlander and transfer Ian Kirkpatrick will take on the fullback role, replacing the graduated Andrew Whitson. Nick Ray, a transfer, will provide speed at tailback and gives the Eagles another option.

With the speed of eight-man football, the Eagles will utilize their depth on the offensive line. Senior Cameron Barnett, will figure to make an impact, as will Ben Nabors, Joseph Patton, Micah Douglas, Jonathan Arnold, Ben Friedlander, Stephen Nabors, Andy Gilbert and Seth Machen.

K

ingwood may have its most talented group yet at the offensive skills positions, and that is taking nothing away from the KCS teams of the past. The duo of Sumrall and Haynes have confidence coming into the season after capturing the BirminghamSouthern 7-on-7 camp in July, and will only be helped by the addition of transfer of receiver C’Yontai Lewis. The key for Kingwood will be getting several talented young players in key positions — namely offensive line and linebacker — the experience they need to get them to the AISA playoffs.

Quarterbacks Senior Gavin Sumrall brings more

44

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

than just experience to the table; the three-year starter has slowly emerged as a strong passer and a leader on offense with knowledge of the playbook. Sumrall led the Lions to an offseason victory in the BirminghamSouthern 7-on-7 Camp, and looks to lead them back to the postseason. Mitchell Carter will serve as backup.

Running Backs Jonathan Faulkner moves into the starting slot at running back. The senior will look to give the Kingwood offense another weapon on the ground. T.L. Wright will see some action at running back, and Charles White and Chris Brown will provide depth.

Receivers The Lions have a dynamic one-two punch at receiver. Senior Montez Haynes has spent three years in the KCS offense, and looks to finish his career as one of the top receivers in school history. In addition to Haynes, Sumrall will have a big target in transfer C’Yontai Lewis. The Florida commit has great hands and field vision, and should provide quite a weapon for Kingwood.

Offensive Line After losing Jacob Bussey to graduation, the Lions turn to junior Hayden White to anchor the offensive line at center. He will be joined by fellow juniors Logan Self and Connor Waltz on the line. Drew

Burns, Justin Lykins, Jay Holland and Devin Doriety will provide depth.

Defensive Line Tyler Mills returns as a three year starter on the defensive line. Ben Hester, a fellow senior, will join Mills up front. Several players figure to see time on the line as KCS looks to rebuild. They include Burns, Holland and Doriety among others.

Linebackers T.L. Wright will step into a starting role at linebacker, replacing Bussey. The Lions are still searching for a cast to surround him, but possible candidates include Jonathan Faulkner, Chris Brown and Charles White.

S

econd year coach Andrew Zow is hoping to provide a sense of consistency for a program that has been though four different coaches in six seasons. The Bulldogs are a youthful bunch, with less than 10 seniors on the 40-player squad. Despite the low number of seniors, Montevallo boasts a large junior class, and will benefit from the experience they will gain this year. The Bulldogs have dedicated time in the offseason specifically to working on technique as well as strength and endurance, as well as improving overall knowledge of the game.

Quarterbacks Junior Cortez Williams makes the move over from running back to replace the graduated Trevor Chatham. He’ll split time between quarterback and running back in the spread offense, as newcomers

Running Backs

Offensive Line

Williams will take handoffs in a parttime role, as Quindarius Jackson will take over a larger role in the running game, as well as a leader of the offense. Sophomore Chase Inabinett also looks to make more of an impact on offense, providing a second option on the ground for the Bulldogs.

Receivers The Bulldogs suffer a huge loss with the graduation of University of Cincinnati signee Korey Cunningham and is searching for someone to step up and fill the void. Sophomore Levi Layton will take over at tight end, and junior Michael McKenzie will move from defensive back

Brian Hodge will lead Montevallo up front. Hodge, a 5’11”, 285-pounds junior, will be the focal point of a group that has worked on its conditioning. He will be joined by fellow junior Timmy Hayes (6’1”, 225-pound) and sophomores Corey Cutts (6’2”, 300-pound) and Zac Carter (5’6”, 296-pound) on the line. The Bulldogs intend to swap between size and smaller, speedier lineman on the line, depending on the situation on the field.

Defensive Line The quartet of Hodge, Hayes, Cutts and Carter will be playing both ways, as they will double up on the defensive line. There has been an emphasis placed on

staying hydrated in order to play both sides. A.J. Green will be brought in to give rest to the starters, as the Bulldogs will search for more depth on the line.

Linebackers Senior Aaron Terrill will serve as the on-field general for the defense, having three years’ experience heading into the season. He will be called on to bring a young defense up to speed. In addition to limited action at quarterback, Hunter Nabors will step into a spot at linebacker. As with many positions, the Bulldogs are will look for more depth heading into fall practice.

Secondary Montevallo will look for big things out of the secondary, which is one of the more experienced units on the team. Quindarius Jackson will play both ways,

as will Cortez Williams. The two will move around the secondary, utilizing their speed and athletic ability. Daijon Young will serve in the secondary this season, after being listed as a linebacker last year.

Special Teams Freshman Diego Martinez is being groomed for the kicking role. Martinez is a former soccer player, who although having never played football before, has displayed a strong work ethic and good leg.

or the Oak Mountain Eagles, 2012 was a season of great strides. After only capturing two region games combined in the previous two years, the Eagles —under first year coach Cris Bell — exploded for five region wins, including victories over county rivals Chelsea and Thompson, Wetumpka, and an upset of perennial state power Prattville. The Eagles know there’s no time to rest on the laurels of last season, however, as only three starters on offense return. A tough road schedule will only help a youthful but talented squad gain necessary experience.

Quarterbacks The Eagles face a tough loss in two-year starter Jake Adams’ graduation, and look

to fresh faces to fill his slot. Warren Shader moves over from running back a year ago, while fellow sophomore Logan Webb looks to earn snaps at quarterback as well.

Running Backs Luckily for the Eagles, two of their returning starters are found at the running back position. The Eagles lose Scott Hester and Antwon Williams, but retain Josh Gaines, who provided several key plays last season, as well as Harold Shader, who looks to provide another rushing threat for Oak Mountain.

Receivers Sophomore Reid Golson looks to become the go-to for a young Eagle receiving corps. Avery Nguyen moves over from

a backup role at quarterback to help provide a receiving option, with senior Zac Barton will take on tight end duties.

Offensive Line The Eagles sport just one returning starter on the O-Line, in senior Jacob Wade. What the Eagles lack in starting experience, they make up for in senior leadership, as Wade will be joined on the line by fellow seniors Mitch McClosky, and Mason Holt, as well as Benton Stroud, Justice Hammond and Blake Snow.

Defensive Line Oak Mountain returns senior Kourtland Walters and junior Andrew Adams, to anchor the defensive line. Big things are expected from Walters. They look

he Panthers hope to build upon the success of 2012. It marked the first winning season for Pelham since 2008, and the most wins for the school since a 10-3 mark back in 2006. ntering his second year with the Wildcats, Coach Brent Smith looks to balance an experienced offensive backfield with a young but talented offensive line. Shelby County looks to have improved on offense after spending a full season and offseason under Smith’s spread option attack, which will utilize Ty Proctor’s arm with the rushing attack of Marterius McGregor in a hybrid back role, and Jamarius McGee.

Running Backs Marterius McGregor will be utilized in the run game, albeit in a different role. McGregor will move to a hybrid back role, serving as a running back on certain plays, then lining up as a receiving threat on others. The goal is to utilize McGregor’s abilities while keeping defenses on their toes. Sophomore Jamarius Mayfield will take over in his place as an every down back.

receiving corps by Nick Youngblood and Andrew Schauer.

Offensive Line If there was a single word to describe the Shelby County offensive line, it would be “young.” The lone senior of the group is Tristan Chandler, as he and junior Jake Edwards look to anchor an offensive line that must replace five seniors. Despite their youth and inexperience, Smith said he feels his O-Line is very talented, and will be a strong group once they learn to gel.

Defensive Line The defensive line will follow suit on the youth movement; several of the stars of last year’s defensive line were twoway players, and thus, will need to be

Linebackers McGregor spent a large amount of time at the strong side linebacker position last season, but will spend fewer plays on defense this year. Matt Youngblood will serve as the middle linebacker, and will be the quarterback of the defense. Senior Daniel Evans will also play linebacker.

Secondary Junior Austin Horton will look to step into a leadership role in the defensive secondary, and will be joined by senior

Ty Johnson and Stephen Abrams. Senior Austin Poe moves from the outside linebacker role to cornerback, and will seek to give the Wildcats a strong option when it comes to pass coverage.

he Jaguars face several challenges headed into the 2013 season. Longtime coach Chip Lindsey left to take a job at Auburn. In to his place steps Shawn Raney, the former Hoover defensive coordinator. The Jaguars also must replace Nick Mullens, a three-year starter at quarterback, as well as a large number of the wide receivers. Still, Spain Park has several talented playmakers that seek to repeat as champions of the tough AHSAA Class 6A Region 4. How well all the new pieces mesh with the established ones will determine the success of the Jaguars this season.

Quarterbacks

66

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

The Jaguars take a big hit, as for the last three season, they could count on Nick Mullens’ experience leading the offense. With his graduation, the Jags must turn to a new face. Mickey Forrest and Mason Duke will battle it out for the position headed into fall practice. Forrest is no stranger to starting, as he transferred from Oak Mountain before last season. He started for the Eagles as a sophomore until injuries ended his season.

Running Back Senior Otis Harris looks to establish himself as the go-to back for the Jags this season. Harris, a back with remarkable vision, racked up 772 yards on 148 attempts last year, and scored 10

touchdowns in the process. Sophomore Wade Streeter, who provides another strong rushing option for Spain Park, will also get plenty of opportunities to carry the football.

Receivers Spain Park will replace their entire receiving corps, as all three starters from a year ago have graduated. Dalton Brown is expected to be a big play threat, as he looks to come back from an injury last season. Fellow senior Phillip Brown, who served as a defensive back last season, will join him. Juniors Derrek Williams and Owen Carr will provide depth at receiver, as will Brannan Martens.

Offensive Line Senior Caleb Plaisted returns to the line, where he served at right tackle last season. Nikolas Kassouf, another returner, will bring experience to the line. Newcomer Jervontius Stallings, who transfers in from Mississippi, will join them. In addition to Stallings, Jay Douglas aims to provide a key role up front.

Defensive Line Senior Devin Pughsly returns with two previous years of experience, starting at tackle the last two seasons. Will Murray will also reprise his starting role, and will be joined by junior Chad Abner, who will seek a larger role this season. Jonah Tibbs will aim to play

a bigger part on the line this year as well.

Linebackers With the Jaguars needing to replace the entire linebacker group, they turn to E.J. Marino to step up and be leader. Big things are expected out of Marino after a great spring. Senior Sam Berry seeks a larger role at linebacker as does senior Drew Moore. Perry Young and Isaac Ephraim, who will provide depth at linebacker, will see action in reserve roles.

Secondary The secondary for Spain Park was young and inexperienced last year, but has turned into a tight-knit group

of grizzled veterans. Austin Haight returns, bringing his senior leadership as well as his playmaking abilities to the coverage game. Junior A.J. Smiley returns as well, as does fellow junior Rodaius Johnson. Johnson had a strong spring, and looks to carry that into the fall. Michael Jackson will provide depth.

Special Teams Kicker Thomas Taylor has full possession of the starting role heading into this season. Taylor provides another scoring weapon, as he was 14-of-20 on field goals with a longkick of 48 yards. He also is valuable as a kickoff specialist, booting 53 percent of his kickoff last season into the endzone for touchbacks. He will also take on punting duties.

n the first year of head coach Michael Montgomery’s tenure at Thompson, the Warriors showed signs of improvement, winning three games to the previous season’s two. More importantly, Montgomery’s second season brings consistency to a program that has seen four different coaches in the last five seasons. The Warriors will turn to an inexperienced but talented quarterback and offensive line along with a workhorse at running back in Dee Tolbert to lead the way in 2013. Thompson looks to make an impact in the hunt for the Class 6A Region 4 title, along with ending a four-year skid in the Battle of 31

72

2013 SHELBY COUNTY FOOTBALL

at the hands of archrival Pelham.

Quarterbacks Zach Brammer will take the reigns from Trey Matherson, who led the Warriors the past two seasons. Brammer, a junior, is a dual threat quarterback who is able to make plays with his legs if needed. Though inexperienced, he has the ability to be a leader on the field once he gets comfortable. Layton Waldrop and Justin Knight will back up Brammer at quarterback.

Running Back Senior Dee Tolbert is the cornerstone of the Warriors’ offense. A three-year

starter, Tolbert scored a combined 21 touchdowns last season. The coaching staff has said Tolbert bulked up over the offseason, and will reprise his role of a dual rushing/receiving threat. Carlos Stephens and Frank Mwaikajumba will provide depth at the position.

Receivers Senior Eric Reeves leads the Thompson receiving corps, giving Brammer a sure-handed target to count on while learning the ropes. Reeves was the school’s first 1,000-yard receiver with great ball skills and a strong mind for the game. He will be joined by junior Xavier Johnson,

Maxwell Davis and Matt Tolbert, who look to take a bigger role on offense.

Offensive Line The Warriors look to rebuild their entire offensive line, and will build around junior Melvin Owens. Leighton Irvin returns as the line’s only senior. They will be joined up front by newcomers Jake Allen, Ryan Mitchell and Corey Robinson, who all will need to learn fast in order to gel as a unit.

Defensive Line Two of the stars of the defense from last season return up front. T.J. Rayam, the sophomore defensive

tackle who started all 10 games last season, will reprise his role and looks to build upon his performance. Also returning is senior defensive end Jake Rakestraw, who is a strong force in the THS pass rush. Junior Akeem Manzano will also bring his speed and pass rushing abilities.

Linebackers Thompson has history of strong linebackers, and Luke Moore is hoping to be the next in line. Although not the biggest at his position, Moore earned a great deal of experience last year as well as a reputation for big play potential and will bring that to a starting role in 2013. He will be joined

he Yellow Jackets are in a period of transition, following former head coach Zeb Ellison’s departure to a coordinator position at Chelsea High. Ellison leaves behind a talented group that made it to the playoffs the last two seasons, and looks to make it a third straight appearance behind senior leadership. Jason Hill took over as head coach in July, and looks to streamline things to make the transition and short time together easier on everyone, while allowing the players’ abilities to lead the charge.

Quarterbacks Michael Gilham returns to the starting role after taking over from Damauntey Johnson, who went down with a knee injury last season. The

senior brings experience after being thrust into the starting role, and his stability on offense will provide a nice balance while the team becomes acquainted with Hill and his offense.

Running Back While the head coach has changed, the leader on offense has not. Senior Rodney Groce will be the go-to option on offense, as he averaged 9.3 yards per carry last season, racking up more than 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns along the way. Fellow senior Ryan Kelow will also see time in the backfield.

Receivers Jace Greene becomes the primary receiving threat for the Jackets following the departure of Anterio

Rogers. Green made a name for himself last year, and looks to work with Gilham to help open the Vincent offense up. Junior Quartez Walker will play opposite of Greene after making appearances last year. Vec Hamilton and Tavius Smith will also look to make contributions this season.

Offensive Line Vincent has the benefit of returning starter Chris Kelley’s three years of starting experience to anchor the line. Also returning for the Yellow Jackets are seniors Jay Hamilton and Bryce O’Steen, who look to provide protection for Gilham and Groce.

Defensive Line The key to any football team is their ability to fight well in the trenches,

AHSAA 2A, REGION 6 2012: 7-4 (4-3) Head Coach: Jason Hill (1st year) Assistants: Stuart Morrison, Dwight Spraley, Ted Gipson, Cory Williams, Sam Dykes, Shea Supri and Brent Lightsey Last region title: 2006 Last playoff game: 2012

Rodney Groce 2012 VINCENT SCHEDULE and Vincent is no exception. Training and conditioning will be huge for the Jackets, as Hamilton looks to pull double duty this season as he works on the D-Line as well. He will be joined by Kelley and O’Steen in going both ways.

returns three of four starters in the defensive secondary. Walker and Vec Hamilton will continue their work at cornerback, while Jace Greene will take free safety. Tavius Smith will also make appearances in the secondary.

Linebackers

Kicking duties have yet to be decided, but Greene, Groce and Kelow will handle all returns.

The single-platoon system is the name of the game, as both Groce and Kelow will start at linebacker as well. Both bring experience and stability to the position, as they are both returning starters, and look to anchor the Jacket defense.
