ON THE COVER

Heather & Connor

Heather Garnett and Connor Kilgore both grew up in Hoover but didn’t meet until they were setup on a blind date in college. They married on Oct. 24, 2020, at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Photo by AL Weddings Design by Kimberly Myers

As a preschooler I’d hide behind my mom’s legs when I met new people—I was that shy. But not at my Aunt Betsy’s wedding. Somehow putting on a lacy peach dress and getting a basket of flowers to take down the aisle unleashed a different child on the dance floor—one who cried during the bride and groom’s first dance because she had to step away from the floor. Turn on music or, better yet, a live band, and a child can dance for hours on end without a care in the world like I did that July evening with my cousin Andrea. Fast forward 31 years and one worldwide pandemic later, and once again I found myself at family wedding—a reception for a couple we had watched wed on Zoom a year before. It was the first large indoor gathering I’d been to in well over a year, and I entered the scene freshly vaccinated and apprehensive about all the people—almost like my childhood shyness. But before long, I found myself on the dance floor, once again with my cousin Andrea. Quickly, we tuned out all thoughts of the virus that had changed our world and danced the night away without abandon. It was freedom-filled bliss. To me, that is one of the best markers of a wedding—to be so in the moment, so focused on celebrating two people becoming one that all the sorrows and fears of the world around us fade for a brief while for feasting, dancing, merriment and perhaps a few tears of joy. That’s also part of why putting together this annual wedding issue is my favorite part of my work year as I get a taste of those blissful celebratory moments for couples and their guests. Each comes with a unique story, many of them this year either during or coming out of the height of pandemic times. And now I get an extra layer of editorial joy to get to share them with all of you. In addition to our features on Hoover brides and grooms, you’ll also find inspiration images from a bridesmaids’ luncheon and a shower grazing table, as well as wedding dresses by independent designers that I can’t stop staring at, a guide to selecting just the right wedding tie and a few pandemic-era wedding trends that are here to stay. Plus, before you get to all the wedding section goodness, we introduce you to the artwork of Brittany Legvold and invite you to take a taste of British cuisine with Southern flair at The Anvil. Cheers to all the marriages this issue celebrates, and here’s to hoping your 2022 is marked by moments where you too can pause all thought of the hard things of this world and dance the night away like a child!

Brittany Legvold’s journey as an artist has gone hand-in-hand with motherhood. BY MADISON BLAIR PHOTOS BY MORGAN HUNT HooversMagazine.com 13

Light streams in from kitchen windows, guiding Brittany Legvold as she layers paint into an abstract landscape-in-the-making. Between groceries and kitchen appliances, she sets up her station, complete with canvasses, brushes and acrylic paint. Next to her 3-year-old Anders paints with watercolors, a lessmessy alternative to acrylic paint, at a small easel. As he works on his own creation of scribbles and blobs, Brittany forms calming abstracts of blue and green. Growing up with a grandmother who was an artist, Brittany has always been inspired to paint, but it wasn’t until she was pregnant with her son that she decided to get into the art form as an adult. “I kept thinking about it and thinking about it, and finally bought some supplies after he was born,” she says.

Brittany knew from the beginning that she wanted to create abstracts. As a child, though, she had been surrounded by her grandmother’s oil paintings, which were more realistic in style. Now, their common passion for art bonds them even more. Her grandmother often offers her advice on technique and is one of her biggest cheerleaders. “It’s really neat because our styles are so different,” Brittany says, “but we still share the same love of painting.” When she was first learning how to paint, Brittany found inspiration in other artists’ work, and as she tried replicate their techniques, she found her own style: building up texture by using modeling paste to create layers upon layers of paint. Along the way, blues and greens have become her signature colors

too. Now that she’s been painting for two years, Brittany finds inspiration from being in nature. “It really offers me therapy,” she explains. “I feel better when I get some sunshine on my face.” She tries to get outside as often as possible and likes to take her son to the trails by her house in Ross Bridge. Painting these nature scenes reminds her of growing up in the country, of her family’s land with big hay bales and playing barefoot in the grass. While some artists find their inspiration through pain, it’s the opposite for Brittany, as is evident in her colorful layers. “My biggest inspiration is having margin in my life,” she says. “For me, this is the happiest stage of my life—having a young child, being married—and I’ve been more inspired in this stage than any other stage.” As a former English and theatre teacher, Brittany has always been inspired by words as well as art, and you’ll find them as names for each of her creations. One of her paintings, titled Counting Sheep, was based off a poem she wrote of the same name when she wanted to capture the moment after her son had fallen asleep. “It’s a very intuitive process,” she says about naming her art. “Sometimes a word will pop into my head, and I’ll paint something that reminds me of that word. I want it to HooversMagazine.com 17

COUNTING SHEEP Artist Brittany Legvold wrote this poem after watching her young son sleep, and it inspired a painting by the same name. The sweet coos, the pitter patter of little feet, chubby cheeks and squishy legs, The “mommy and me” he says when he wants me to put him to sleep The up and down, filling cups and cleaning counters of spilled cups The falls and scrapes and bruises and cuts The holding my hand walking into preschool each day The tantrums, the whines, the pleas for “one more time” My heart bursting out of my chest with the deepest love I didn’t know I had You, my son, are my greatest joy I’ll lay beside you and count sheep as long as you’d like… These are the best days of my life

be meaningful.” About a year ago, Brittany decided to start sharing her work on social media and with other artists for the first time, and the positive feedback encouraged her to begin to sell her art. “It’s a very intimidating step because it’s very vulnerable,” she admits. One of her earliest motivators was Tom Findlay, owner of Thomas Andrew Art Gallery in Homewood, who told her that her art is very sellable. “I wasn’t expecting that,” she says, “but that gave me the confidence to share more.” In fact, Tom even asked if he could sell her art in his gallery. And that was just the start of the world social media has opened her art to. “It’s really surprised me how sharing my art has helped me to create more community,” she says. “From sales to connecting with other artists to connecting with retail stores or galleries, I’ve been surprised. The more you share, the more people will see it, the more people will want to connect with you.” Still, what motivates Brittany the most is encouraging others to be creative, living by the motto, “To inspire people, don’t show

them your superpowers, show them theirs,” as well as spiritual connections. “For me, creating art is about sharing God’s love,” Brittany says. “I feel like God has given us all a gift, like he’s created us to be creative.” In addition to her work as an artist, Brittany works as a content creator for Megan LaRussa’s Style Yourself Chic, a personal styling business. As she continues to carve out time to paint on top of that job and motherhood, she has started working on multiple paintings at once to assist with the layering process and saving time. Having her family on her team is a big part of making that happen. “(My husband) has no problem with me painting in the kitchen or upstairs,” she says. “He doesn’t understand my desire to paint, but I don’t understand his desire to golf or watch football. I love that we have our separate passions and support both of them,” she adds, jokingly. Brittany’s hope is to continue to grow as an artist and encourage others. “I’m still learning, and I think my style will evolve,” she says. “The one thing I want people to know is that everyone is creative.” Brittany’s work is sold in Shoppe on Broadway and Alabama Treasures in Homewood, as well as Kathleen Interiors in Decatur. was actually through her leg. Olivia was born with a congenital heart defect requiring open heart surgery at 3 months old. She also required a second surgery as a teen to replace her pulmonary valve – but this time they went through a vein in her leg to insert the Harmony Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve in her heart. This less-invasive path to replacement shortened her recovery time, and she went home the next day. Olivia was the first pediatric patient in the southeast to receive the Harmony valve, and it was here at Children’s of Alabama.

It is hard to have a favorite time of the year at Aldridge Gardens, but springtime is by far my favorite. After the crispness of winter, we are all ready to welcome the beautiful colors of our blooming hydrangeas and azaleas that cover the grounds throughout the gardens. Our winter projects are finished, and we are hard at work on our spring events and weddings. Plans for our summer camps, which run from June 6 to July 1, are well underway, and Debbie McDonald, our director of education, has some exciting sessions in the works. Springtime weddings and events have been planned for a long time now, and our Sales and Events team, Amanda Baker and Debbie Rutherford, are busy getting details finalized to ensure that these happen flawlessly, while continuing to book new events for the future. Our Spring Plant Sale is scheduled for April 28, 29 and 30. We will have a variety of plants including our Snowflake Hydrangeas available. Our annual fundraiser, Hydrangeas Under the Stars, is planned for June 11 under the pavilion. Money raised from this event goes to support education programs as well as projects at Aldridge Gardens. We are always excited to welcome all of our visitors to the City of Hoover’s beautiful Aldridge Gardens and look forward to visiting with everyone.

BOOK NOOK

The Heart of Our Community A January 1, 2022, Washington Post opinion titled “The Golden Age of Public Libraries Dawns Again,” discusses how some futurists predicted that technology would kill libraries, but it has actually done the opposite and strengthened them by allowing us to serve more people. Just pick up almost any device and download a book, watch a movie or read a magazine article for free. You can also remotely contact a librarian for assistance with a class project, job resources or almost any question you might have. While information has become easier to access from home, so has the need for real connection, especially in a pandemic. Libraries around the globe have recording studios, test kitchens, makerspaces, gathering spaces, live theatre, bookmobiles, Library Director outdoor programming and many more depending upon their community. Here in Hoover, we have hosted numerous Grammy Award winners in our 250-seat performing arts venue. We were one of the first libraries to circulate public hot spots, and this year we found ways to take the library outside our four walls and into the community. We installed a remote locker system in East Hoover, 14 little free libraries across the city and a StoryWalk® at Aldridge Gardens. According to the Washington Post column, “Libraries are the heart of communities [and] communities that invest in libraries are well prepared for whatever the next chapter brings.” Wednesday, April 6 is #LibraryGivingDay, a one-day fundraising event during National Library Week that encourages people who enjoy public libraries to donate to their favorite. For every $1 we spend at the Hoover Library, the community receives more than $5 worth of services. Our average user checks out 30 items a year, which amounts to about $750 worth of free materials per person or $3,000 of annual savings for a family of four. On top of that, we offer the added value of computers, Wi-Fi, tax prep and research databases. We hope you will celebrate #LibraryGivingDay with a donation to the Hoover Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is raising funds to enhance library services in Hoover. To make a donation, please visit hooverlibaryfoundation.org. We’ll also be posting some fun incentives for our donors during National Library Week (April 3-9) on hooverlibrary.org and Facebook.

FOOD

BRITISH TWIST

The Anvil Pub & Grill blends a little bit of British cuisine with Southern flair to create a category of its own. BY SARAH COOK MCBRIDE PHOTOS BY KATHRYN BELL HooversMagazine.com 25

W

Where Southern comfort food meets British cuisine, you’ll find The Anvil Pub & Grill. It’s a place where both shrimp and grits and fish and chips live happily on the same menu, along with a roundup of other dishes that are impressively highbrow and downhome at the same time. Opening on the precipice of the historic COVID-19 shutdown of 2020, The Anvil managed to weather the curbside and take-out storm with grace from their location off Highway 280. Head Chef Sedesh Boodram, who grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and honors his roots through his culinary talents, says the goal of the restaurant is to offer fine-dining food in a casual atmosphere. The Anvil, he says, is meant to be a place for both romantic dates or a spot to take the edge off after a long day at work. Whatever kind of “vibe” patrons wish to channel, they can find it at The Anvil. “I come from a fine dining background, but I want to keep it casual,” Sedesh says of his approach to the restaurant’s overall atmosphere and culinary style. Trenton Tisdale, the restaurant’s chef de cuisine, also brings his own set of skills to the table. Originally from Alabama, he brings diverse and thoughtful approaches to his craft. And although he may not have a southern accent, Sedesh is no stranger to the Birmingham food scene. Gaining experience under the tutelage of Chef Chris Hastings at Ovenbird and Hot and Hot, Sedesh more than knows his way around the kitchen. Before arriving in Birmingham (his spouse, a Birmingham native, brought him to the Magic City), Sedesh graduated valedictorian of the French Culinary Institute and also studied under an impressive lineup of New York City chefs. “I see the new wave of the food culture happening here,” Sedesh says of Birmingham. “Everyone is doing something different, and that’s what I initially missed when I moved here from New York.” After watching Birmingham’s food scene grow with ferocity for some time, Sedesh knew it was time to open a restaurant of his own. Instead of taking to the city’s urban center, however, the chef decided to grace the ‘burbs with his culinary acumen. Located inside The Village at Lee Branch, The Anvil proves you don’t have to make the downtown trek to find

exceptional dining. Offering entrees that spotlight a myriad of cultures, this pub and grill is for the restaurant goer who appreciates diversity. Plenty of dishes, of course, pay respect to Sedesh’s upbringing—like the British Rabbit Pie and Fish and Chips. But Sedesh is quick to point out that British culture is a melting pot of cultures, so there really are no “rules” to the menu. That’s why you’ll also find Lamb Tikka Masala and every southerner’s favorite, Shrimp and Grits. “British cuisine can get a bad rap sometimes,” Sedesh says. But, because of its colonial history, British food has the benefit of collecting influences from many other native cooking traditions. This melting pot of cultures, Sedesh says, gives every chef what they desire most in the kitchen—freedom. Sourcing locally whenever possible, the menu is a celebration of flavor. Serving brunch, lunch, dinner and the occasional high tea (which always sells out, so lock in a reservation), The Anvil is a place that celebrates all flavors and people. “People think pub and think dark and dreary, but it can be fun and stylish,” he says. “It’s not smoky and dark—more light and airy. I wanted it to attract a diverse crowd as much as possible. It’s

perfect for dates (and) for families, and you can dress it up or be casual. It’s approachable.” Judging by the local response, it’s safe to say that the restaurant’s vision has become reality. Looking to the future, Sedesh says his plan is to continue keeping a pulse on what the locals want—but always offer a few dishes that might encourage newcomers to get adventurous with their order. “When people ask me what to order, I say that’s like choosing a favorite child,” Sedesh says with a laugh. “It’s all good. They all have a special meaning.” The Anvil Pub & Grill is located in The Village at Lee Branch off Highway 280 at 611 Doug Baker Blvd., Suite 103. Learn more at theanvilpub.com. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

David Cohen Hoover Restaurant Week Founder PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

David Cohen can’t go to Publix without recognizing his customers from The Whole Scoop ice cream shop all over the store. For him being a business owner is as much about being part of the Hoover community as anything else, and he knows that’s true for many other independently owned restaurants and food businesses around town too. That’s part of why he has brought two different Hoover Restaurant Weeks to life this year and last. Read on to learn all about them, and find more information at hooverrestaurantweek.com and on Facebook and Instagram. How did Hoover Restaurant Week and Hoover International Week come to be? A couple of years ago we started Hoover Restaurant Alliance to strengthen the independent restaurant community here in Hoover. Hoover is a small town with 90,000 people, and at The Whole Scoop, we are so involved in so many lives. I think all of these mom and pop restaurants are the same, and I wanted to help them. A couple of years ago we did Curbside Restaurant Week during the pandemic with a BINGO game, and this past year we did Hoover Restaurant Week, which went exceedingly well. Then we wanted to start talking about the International Week, which was in January. We have 14 restaurants who stepped up and bought into what we are doing with menus for that one.

down Lorna Road, there’s an Alabama Foods Halal International and lots of Mexican restaurants. A couple of years ago Blue Pacific opened. We are excited for them to be a part of our city, but there’s a bunch of other restaurants right there from Cuban to Thai. We get into a rut in what we eat, and we need to try new places. Hoover has great rich cultural diversity in our population, and we have that in our restaurants too. Our restaurants reflect our community.

restaurants? If you go to a chain restaurant, it’s the same here as in Dallas, Texas. Many of the independent restaurants are husband and wife teams whose kids grow up in the business. People put their life savings into it. We see all of these people be an integral part of the community, with their kids in the school and doing sports and schools here.

What plans are in the works for Hoover Restaurant Week this year? On Tybee Time Slow down to explore sandy beaches, marshes and historical sites on this small island off the southern coast of Georgia. By Christiana Roussel | Photos Courtesy of Tybee Island & Local Businesses Referenced in Captions HooversMagazine.com 35

HIT THE ROAD

Road trips are a funny thing. We start out in our own driveways, surrounded by the familiar—the twists and turns of our own neighborhood streets—which gradually give way to multi-lane highways, streams of cars and trucks all rushing to their destinations. And as we approach our own journey’s end, in this case, Tybee Island, we take a moment to notice the still-unfamiliar but highly anticipated. The highway recedes, and we find ourselves on a simple two-lane road that will ultimately end at the ocean, exactly where we wish to be. At only three miles long and less than a mile wide, Tybee Island—one of the famed Sea Islands off the coast of southern Georgia—is a natural respite from the rigors of daily life. With sandy beaches to the east and tidal marshes to the western interior, Tybee is replete with marine activity far different from the towns dotting the northern Florida panhandle where many of us have vacationed. Life on Tybee Island is dictated by the tides, the ebb and flow of a life lived more slowly, more in tune with the native world around us, and one rich in history.

Tybee Island

HISTORY

These islands have seen their fair share of Revolutionary War battles, and Fort Pulaski (nps.gov/ fopu/index.htm) is a must-visit for any history buff. Named for Casimir Pulaski, a Polish soldier and commander who fought in the Revolutionary War, this coastal fortification played a key role in rifled cannon combat. Today the site is part of the National Park Service and available to visit year-round. During the Industrial Revolution, Tybee Island was the southern-most stop on the Central of Georgia Railway line, making it the ideal destination for residents of densely populated cities up north who were seeking healthier climes as remedies to ailments associated with industrial pollution. For lighthouse enthusiasts (yes, that is a thing!), Tybee Island is home to Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse, the original being constructed in 1736. The Tybee Island Historical Society oversees the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum (tybeelighthouse.org), and it is a must-visit.

WHEN (and HOW) TO GO There are those who favor beach visits only when you can don a bathing suit while others prefer to go when the wide expanse of sand is not chock-a-block with umbrellas and beach towels. Honestly, there isn’t a bad time to be on the island. The spring sees more temperate days and nights making Tybee Island ideal for a weeklong getaway, a day trip from Savannah or anything in between. The drive to Tybee Island from Birmingham is a little over six hours. There is plenty to see along the way, and it might be nice to have your car for extended exploration. Plane travelers can fly into Savannah and make the 20-minute drive onto the island.

WEDDING DESTINATIONS

Those looking to plan their nuptials on the island should book The Reeve Cottage (thereevecottage.com) guest house, located on a prime acre of land at the Southern-most tip of the island. With an unrivaled view of the ocean, Little Tybee Island and epic sunsets, guests will appreciate the location as much as the bride and groom themselves. The Tybee Island Wedding Chapel and Grand Ballroom is also worth checking out (tybeeweddingchapel. com). (Miley Cyrus fans might recognize the chapel from her movie, The Last Song.)

HIT THE ROAD

WHAT TO DO A visit to Tybee Island should come with a commitment to adventure and to being outdoors—there is so much to explore.

Forget the Car

Many visitors bring their own bikes or rent on the island from places like Tim’s Bike & Beach Gear (timsbeachgear.com). Still others like the ease of a golf cart, renting one at Tybee Golf Carts (tybeegolfcarts.com).

Tim’s Bike & Beach Gear

Sea Treasures

Take to the marshes in a kayak or SUP with Sea Kayak Georgia. Book a Sundial Charter Tour to hunt for fossils (megalodon sharks teeth!) and lost treasures from the sea. Sundial also offers crabbing and light-tackle fishing for those looking for sport. Dolphin watching and sunset tours are always popular with anyone visiting Tybee, and there are several outfitters offering these experiences as well.

Meet the Turtles

Kids of all ages will enjoy visiting the Tybee Island Marine Science Center (tybeemarinescience.org) to learn more about the coastal marine life. Sea turtle nesting season begins around May 1; local volunteers spend time searching the local shoreline for these nests and then sit with them to protect them from scavengers. Visitors can meet Ike the sea turtle who was born September 2020 and now calls the center his home.

Tybee by Night

Evening entertainment can often be found at the Tybee Post Theater (tybeeposttheater. org), which was once a movie house for soldiers stationed at Fort Screven. Nowadays, you can not only catch a screening but also see live music or a local theater production.

Tybee Post Theater

WHERE TO STAY Life on Tybee is definitely “island time” and many hotel options lean toward casual. After all, with so much going on outdoors, you’re not likely to spend too much time in your hotel room.

The Beachview Inn and Spa (beachviewtybee.com) is minutes from the beach, with hospitality that combines the relaxed coastal atmosphere with Southern charm. The Back River area of Tybee is less densely populated with several VRBO options, cottages for groups or family gatherings too.

38 Spring 2022

Meet Your Travel Guide Proud to call Birmingham home, Christiana Roussel loves discovering every corner of the Magic City. But the road beckons often. She’s been known to make a wrong turn into the right choice, dig in with the locals and try to talk her way out of a speeding ticket or two. Curiosity drives her and finding connection is her passion.

WHERE TO EAT Ahhh, we’ve saved the best for last—the food. As you can imagine, the menus at most Tybee Island restaurants feature seafood. It is the history and the vibe that makes them all distinct. The Crab

Simply Seafood

Longtime visitors, larger groups and anyone looking for a bit of old-school beach schmaltz will clamor to go to The Crab Shack (thecrabshack.com), an island institution where guests arrive via car or boat. Large holes in the center of each table give way to trash cans underneath, perfect for making a mess and tossing in shrimp shells and tails, corncobs or any other detritus from a good seafood boil. Note: the baby alligator on-site might be the other reason kids love coming here. AJ’s Dockside (ajsdocksidetybee.com) is equally casual and attached to the marina where you can spend the afternoon watching fishermen bring in their hauls.

A Step Above

Looking for something a bit more upscale?

Shack

Try Sundae Café (sundaecafe.com), where you might have to choose between sushi nachos, shrimp and grits, a Lowcountry bouillabaisse or burgers with thick-cut bacon. Over at Salt Island Fish and Beer (saltislandfb.com), you’ll be looking at the blue crab poutine, baked oysters or a whole fish, straight off the boat.

Until Whenever

Late night diners have been known to favor Huc-a-Poos (hucapoos.com), where closing time is noted as “whenever.” As popular

with the locals as it is with vacationers, this is where you can meal hard on wraps, pizzas, nachos or anything that pairs well with beer.

To Start the Day

If breakfast is more your speed, uber-laidback diner-style Breakfast Club might be just for you. Locals call this “no frills,” and that is saying something because Tybee is already pretty low-key. Omelets as well as classic fare like steak-and-eggs or hash browns are the order of the day at Sunrise Breakfast (sunrisesavannah.com) as well.

forever on your

side Just before the big day, it’s time to slow down and celebrate the ladies who will be standing by your side. That’s just what this bride did with an elegant and heartfelt luncheon she won from Bromberg’s. Photos by Arden Photography HooversMagazine.com 43

The Cake Pull You can order a bridesmaids luncheon cake from Olexa’s in their signature vanilla buttercream with charm pulls already in it. According to the tradition, each bridesmaid pulls a ribbon to find a charm with its own meaning and gets to keep it. Fittingly, Hannah pulled a charm with a bride and groom cake topper.

2020 was a tough year for all things weddings. Then with the advent of 2021, Bromberg’s was not only ushering in a fresh year but also their 185th anniversary of business, so the store wanted to do something special for the Birmingham community. And that’s how they decided to give away a bridesmaid luncheon along with Juliska, their bestselling giftware line, both for the community and to highlight their wedding registry—and to bring joy coming out of a difficult season. Hannah Reeder—now Hannah Reeder Evans— was selected as the winner in August and held her luncheon at Olexa’s with a selection of vendors Bromberg’s brought on board on Nov. 19. Read on to learn more about the details of the event to help inspire your own.

Floral Party Starter The design for the luncheon started with this blue and white floral Field of Flowers Chambray linen from Juliska, and all other details, including the menu, invitations and place cards by Dogwood Hill, were based on it. The napkins fit seamlessly with Hannah’s décor theme.

The Palette The spring-like color palette of the luncheon was inspired by Hannah’s wedding itself with light blues, soft pinks and whites. 44 Spring 2022

Mix it Up The table featured two different champagne flutes, Juliska’s Amalia and Graham patterns, to add variety, along with the Isabella acrylic goblets. All of the glassware features Juliska’s berry and thread motif that tied all of the pieces together, and the vases were also from the Graham, Amalia and Isabella lines along with the Arden— which just so happens to be the name of the event’s photographer too.

Bromberg’s bridal consultants like to work with them to select new pieces to mix in with existing ones to create a table of their own that will host memories for years to come.

Last summer Birmingham photographer Mary Fehr got to see a new side of the Windy City: behind the scenes of its wedding market—and not just any part of it but a set of smaller independent wedding dress designers that an all-female agency, The Agency by GCG (Grace Consulting Group), represents. During her time there Mary modeled and photographed dresses while interacting with the designers themselves. “It was inspiring to see all of these designs and help get their names out there,” she says. “Being able to represent those smaller independent designers is important as well.” Here we share some of the images she created in that time.

A Guide to Selecting Just the Right Wedding Tie Photos by Morgan Hunt | Text by Madoline Markham 2020 forever changed the way we dress. There was no need for suits on Zoom weddings and for car parades. Coming out of that extended year, though, everyone was wondering what the new normal would be. One thing is certain: nothing is as a formal as it was, as Harrison Limited owner Scott Pyburn will tell you. And when it comes to weddings, that means more are now taking place on beaches and in backyards where there’s no need for a tux for groomsmen. But once you decide the groomsmen will wear suits, what’s next? Here’s Scott’s guide to tie selection for your suit.

1. Start with color. Most couples will bring in a bridesmaid’s dress color or swatch to match menswear to. From there Scott will pull out a book of tie fabrics from Robert Jensen, a Houston-based designer that is exclusive to his store locally, and let the customer select a fabric to correspond with it.

2. Consider the weave and pattern. You can choose a weave like a pineapple grenadine or a satin one, both equally formal. The couple can also opt for a less formal striped tie with the bridesmaid dress color as one component of the pattern or for a bowtie.

3. Add a pocket square. You can go with a classic white or colors or patterns to complement the tie selection.

4. Place your order. Most stores might not have as many ties in the color and weave you select in stock as you need, so you can place an order for the number of groomsmen you have. Robert Jensen also makes a tall tie in addition to the standard size.

ABOUT HARRISON LIMITED Article Sponsor Since 1991, Harrison Limited in Mountain Brook Village has sought to present their clients and friends with clothing of a particular character. Their focus has always been to provide a special experience for discerning men—one that emphasizes classic design and style, attention to detail, and a commitment to exceptional service. HOW WE MET We met in the most millennial way possible, on Facebook via mutual friends. Justin posted his thoughts about how men should treat women, and a friend of mine (Megan’s) shared his post on Facebook. Impressed with his ideas of modern romance, I added Justin as a friend on Facebook. Justin sent me a private message, asking me out on a date, and the rest is history!

FAVORITE MOMENTS As a single mother for a decade, the most memorable moment for me was when Justin spent a private moment with my daughter, Kennedy, prior to the reception. Justin had a special ring for Kennedy that he put on her finger and promised to love her as his own and to love and respect her mom. I love Justin’s thoughtfulness and the way he intentionally chose to love not only me, but also my daughter, by marrying me. Justin’s favorite moment was when I changed from my wedding gown into a white sequin jumpsuit during the reception. “All I could think was, ‘Wow!!! I’m one lucky man!’ My mouth literally dropped open when I saw her,” he says. “Our photographer saw me and couldn’t stop laughing.” FAVORITE DETAILS My planner, Becky, made my vision for a tablescape come to life with all the little details, from the acrylic box place cards with handcalligraphed names each holding a rose inside, to the gorgeous floral arrangements, to the custom candles with our wedding crest on them from The South Candle (a local vendor, we used these as wedding favors as well), to the rose gold flatware. Becky picked out the perfect chair rentals and tablecloth rentals to coordinate and tie everything together. My mom even refinished a settee for our sweetheart seating with upholstery that matched our wedding colors. HooversMagazine.com 65

lexey + brady JUNE 20, 2020 PHOTOS BY AL WEDDINGS

66 Spring 2022

HOW WE MET Brady and Lexey both spent part of their college tenure working at Auburn University’s Campus Recreation Center. Had Lexey not wanted extra money for a summer mission trip, the two would have never crossed paths. Lexey did not expect to catch attention from someone older, so when Brady introduced himself as her operations supervisor, she ignored his smile and kind demeanor. Lexey was very surprised to find that Brady was in his final terms as a mechanical engineering student though. She found new excitement in the conversation, and her emotional walls shrunk as the two related over school struggles. Later, Brady was taken by surprise at Lexey’s strong personality, and he was elated since no one had displayed such strong interest in him. Lexey was also surprised by Brady. She had never been asked on a date over the phone or in person, so when Brady called her to ask for dinner, Lexey, along with her friends that overheard the call, was ecstatic.

THE PROPOSAL Like any other day, Brady and Lexey embarked on a geocaching adventure around the local Birmingham area, not far from Lexey’s home. Unbeknownst to Lexey, Brady had asked his mother and sister to hide a proposal letter in a special cache earlier that same day. The abandoned steel bridge spanning the Little Cahaba River was a quiet and secluded location, perfect for a quaint proposal. Checking behind the tree once looked over revealed a small canister painted green lying on the ground. Together, Brady and Lexey opened the geocache and read the letter. At the end, when Brady got down on one knee, Lexey erupted with emotion. She was completely caught off guard, but joyfully threw out a yes! The two rode home in tears of joy where friends and family were waiting with cheerful hearts. HooversMagazine.com 67

THE PROPOSAL We both differ on opinions when it comes to New Year’s Eve. I (Katy) love going to bed early, while Jeremy loves celebrating the new year with a bang. We decided to stay in to cook dinner and have a movie marathon to bring in 2021. Around 11:30 p.m. I began dozing off, so Jeremy jumped up to turn on the lights throughout the house to be sure I was awake at midnight. As the countdown began, he ran to the kitchen to grab party poppers and came back with a ring and hit one knee. It was a simple, yet perfect, pajama proposal to quite literally ring in the new year. FAVORITE MOMENTS Our favorite moments of the day were the times we had a minute to breathe together. We skipped the first look and instead exchanged gifts and letters back to back. It was a grounding moment filled with peace and anticipation for the day ahead, as well as one to laugh together about gifts we received from one another. Jeremy gave me a Razor scooter, and I gifted him a speaker engraved with “Schram Fam.” Once the reception was over, we headed to a few spots around downtown Birmingham to take photos. We spent the next hour riding scooters, blasting music and celebrating the day together. FAVORITE DETAILS The wedding was a small, very intentional celebration. Each detail, whether conventional or unconventional, was carefully chosen. To this day, Jeremy’s favorite detail was anything floral: boutonnieres, bouquets and the greenery that brought our reception venue to life. My favorite detail was one not chosen by me at all, but rather a surprise detail planned by my dad. His suit jacket was lined with photos of my pups, Bailey and Jersey. HooversMagazine.com 69

tracy + tarleton OCTOBER 2, 2021 PHOTOS BY MORGAN HIPPS

70 Spring 2022

HOW WE MET Tarleton and Tracy both attended Hoover High School together. They knew of one another but didn’t hang out in the same groups. Tarleton likes to joke with Tracy that she was too cool for him. Years later they met up at a mutual friend’s house for an Auburn football game and began talking. They realized they shared a love for some of the same things, and Tarleton says he knew right away that she was the one.

the details Venue: Riverchase Country Club Wedding Planner: Lexie Winkler Watkins, Riverchase Country Club Florist: Birdsong in Bloom Caterer: Riverchase Country Club Cake: Klarissa’s Cupcakes Invitations: Fine Paperwork Wedding Dress: Bella’s Bridal Bridesmaid Dresses: Azazie Hair & Makeup: Ashley Vines, Beauty from Ash Groom/Groomsmen Attire: Men’s Wearhouse Ceremony Music: Ethan Bracker Reception Band: The Blake Brock Trio Wedding Rings: Diamonds Direct

THE PROPOSAL Tarleton and Tracy share a love for the beach, where they have spent many times vacationing. This was where he had planned to propose when COVID-19 hit. Many months passed with no opportunity to travel to the beach, but in September of 2020 they planned a date night at one of their favorite restaurants, Redlands, where Tarleton decided he was going to propose. On their way out the door, he couldn’t wait and asked Tracy to marry him right then and there. The proposal dinner turned into a celebratory dinner instead! FAVORITE MOMENT One thing that was important to them was to honor Tarleton’s late father Francis Tarleton James III and have him as a part of their ceremony. They did this by lighting a memorial candle as a part of the service. During the exchanging of rings, Tarleton received his father’s ring in addition to the one Tracy gave him. FAVORITE DETAILS The florals were a mixture of white and blush florals: hydrangeas, roses, ranunculus, dahlias, anemones and greenery. The mothers and bridal party walked in to Pachebel’s Canon in D, and the bridal entrance was a modern version of the original Bridal Chorus by Wagner. HooversMagazine.com 71

THE PROPOSAL June 12, 2020, was the day my (Emma’s) dreams would become reality. Ty drove me to a downtown Birmingham location for a “maternity photoshoot” as we were expecting our baby girl at the time. In the middle of the shoot, Ty went back to the car to grab a brush for our 2-year-old son Jax. Moments later I began to wonder what was taking Ty so long only to turn around and see the love of my life down on one knee. Tears began to roll down my face as I stared at my new best friend (the ring)! For years I imagined what this moment would be like, and now it was finally happening. The smile he placed upon my face is the same one I wear until this day. FAVORITE MOMENT My (Ty’s) favorite was seeing my beautiful wife walk down the aisle. I always knew she was the one, but the emotions that surfaced while watching her come towards me sealed the deal. In that moment, it was evident to me and everyone else that she was truly the woman of my dreams. I was so ecstatic I couldn’t hold back my tears. Making her my wife and hearing us announced finally as Mr. & Mrs. Duncan made me complete from that day forward. WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW We went on a beautiful honeymoon to the Dominican Republic where we were able to enjoy each other’s company and make amazing memories together. Since then we have been on the go with our kids and work life. As a travel nurse life can be hectic. I (Emma) completed an assignment in New York and got back just in time to celebrate our baby girl’s first HalloQueen birthday on October 28 and later went to California to work for a couple of months for the rest of the year.

HOW WE MET Nick and I (Taylor) met our sophomore year at Hoover High School. A mutual friend thought we would be a great match and decided to set us up. We went to a group dinner and hit it off.

the details Venue: Haven Wedding Planner: Dana Baswell, Southern Styled Events Florist: Kelly Wilkin Caterer: Happy Catering Bride’s Cake: Telia Johnson Groom’s Cake: Pastry Art Bake Shoppe Videographer: Awaken Films Invitations: Annabelle’s Wedding Dress: Diane’s Formal Affair Bridesmaid Dresses: Azazie Hair & Makeup: Brittany Scoggins Groom/Groomsmen Attire: Mr. Burch Formal Wear Band: Just a Few Cats Transportation: Prideline Transportation Getaway Car: Vintage Auto Wedding Chauffeur Live Painter: Sherri Arias Wedding Rings: Jewelers 3

THE PROPOSAL After spring break our senior year of college, COVID-19 struck, and we both decided to come home to Birmingham to continue school online. This threw a curveball in Nick’s plans for an engagement occur in Auburn surrounded by all of our friends, but on May 29, Nick told me to be ready for a dinner date later that evening. Since we had not left the house in weeks for any social events, I had a suspicious feeling that a proposal was about to happen. Nick drove us to The Club and popped the question. FAVORITE DETAILS Some of my favorite details included sentimental items: my bridal cake tablecloth made from my mother’s wedding gown and Nick’s silver cake server that was used at his grandparents’ wedding. However, my most cherished detail was a surprise gift from my mom: a live painting of our first dance. Little did I know that the actual surprise came later when I received the finished painting, which included my late father. The painting captured one of our favorite moments, down to details of our venue, gorgeous flowers, and faces of our bridal party and family members. And as for my dad, we knew he was there with us all along. FAVORITE MOMENT After planning our wedding and then having to change venues three months prior due to COVID restrictions, we were so thankful for the chance to have a wedding. Being surrounded by friends and family, some of which we had not seen in years, was a night we will never forget. HooversMagazine.com 77

78 Spring 2022

HOW WE MET Connor and I (Heather) grew up in the same hometown, but never knew each other. We met in college on a blind date to a sorority date party. We hung out together as friends over the next couple of months and began dating the following summer. We dated for over four years before getting married.

the details Ceremony Venue: Shades Mountain Baptist Church Reception Venue: Events at Haven Florist: The White Willow Events Caterer: IZ Catering Cake: Daughters Baking Videographer: Main Street Productions Wedding Dress: Bella’s Bridal Bridesmaid Dresses: Azazie Hair & Makeup: Hair + Makeup by Nat Groom/Groomsmen Attire: Imperial Formal Wear Music: Superior Sound Entertainment - DJ Prez Transportation: Rare Transportation

THE PROPOSAL Connor told me that he had a work party at The Club. I am not an easy person to surprise, so he even made a fake invitation to try to throw me off. When we got there, Connor walked me to the back of The Club where it overlooks the city of Birmingham. As we were walking, he stopped in the middle of the path, and then he turned to me, told me how much he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and dropped to one knee. Although I do not remember everything he said because I was so shocked, it was the most perfect moment and in front of the city we both grew up in and love so dearly. FAVORITE MOMENT Our photographers took us away at the beginning of the reception for sunset photos at Railroad Park. It had finally stopped raining, and these were the only photos we were able to get outside on our wedding day. It was a sweet time to spend together before we headed back to celebrate with friends and family. WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW Connor and I live in our first house in Homewood. Connor is a CPA for PwC, and I am a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Children’s of Alabama. We love to travel together, and we enjoy trying all the fun and local spots around Birmingham. HooversMagazine.com 79

MY HOOVER JALENE GORE Deer Valley Neighbor

Good for the Soul

Stardome Comedy Club For over 20 years I have enjoyed laughing at the Stardome Comedy Club. In December I would always get excited when my cellphone would ring and I saw a 444-number because I knew it was my annual call to come celebrate my birthday along with 11 of my friends. Whether I’m seeing a well-known comedian or one who is an up-and-coming local, I can truly say I am never disappointed when I visit the Comedy Club. Bruce and his staff are great!

Books & More Books

Eating Local

Ross Bridge Farmer’s Market Every summer on Fridays I look forward to going to the market. I’m usually on the hunt for green tomatoes, local honey and peaches from growers around the state. It’s hot, so I have to complete my trip with a stop at the snow cone truck. I like to mix flavors, and I’m never disappointed with my flavor combination!

Home Sweet Home

Reilly Glen When my mother and I moved to Hoover, we immediately connected with neighbors who welcomed us with open arms. In Reilly Glen in Deer Valley, it’s not uncommon to get a knock on the door with one of our awesome neighbors just dropping by to chat for a few minutes or to share a plate from a meal they have prepared. Our little community is a great combination of senior citizens, young married couples, young couples with kids, retirees and middle aged folks.

Serving Those Who Serve

Hoover Cop Stop Several years ago at church I learned of an opportunity to love on our local law enforcement by preparing or donating a food item one time a month. I truly enjoy serving with Hoover Cop Stop and our once-a-month fellowship to meet some awesome men and women who are dedicated to protecting our city as well as awesome Hoover residents that I now call friends.

90 Spring 2022

Hoover Public Library Long before I became a Hoover resident, I would often visit Hoover Public Library. I would pick out 10-12 romance, fiction and mystery novels and happily present them at the check-out desk in pre-self-checkout times. I love to read!
