The Greater Shelby Chamber To Announce Green Business Program at July Luncheon The Existing Business & Industry Work Group is excited to announce the development of a Green Business Program for the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of this program will be to celebrate Shelby County businesses that are committed and engaged in environmentally responsible operations and practices, also known as ‘green’ business practices. What’s more, the program will recognize environmentally safe and sustainable business practices and operations businesses undertake to ensure that Shelby County is environmentally healthy and viable. The Chamber’s Existing Business & Industry Work Group will be hosting the July membership luncheon and explaining more about this program and how to get involved. Industry Tour Set for July 23 at A. C. Legg, Incorporated
The Chamber’s Existing Business & Industry Work Group is inviting Chamber members to its next Industry Tour scheduled for July 23 at 8:30 a.m. onsite at A. C. Legg, Incorporated. A. C. Legg has enjoyed more than 80 years of success in the food seasoning business. Their success has been built on Quality, Consistency, Innovation, and Service. The company was founded on these ideals in 1923 and has been an integral part of its continued growth. NOTE: Industry Tour is limited to 15 participants and an RSVP is required by Friday, July 19. What is the Existing Business & Industry Work Group? The Existing Industry & Business Work Group recognizes and supports local industries through tours, legislative actions, seminars and other appropriate means. July Membership Luncheon Featuring Jeff Rosenthal, President & CEO, Hibbett Sporting Goods The Chamber’s Existing Business & Industry Work Group will host the July Membership Luncheon as we welcome Jeff Rosenthal, President & CEO, Hibbett Sporting Goods. Mr. Rosenthal will share with attendees the multistate search process that Hibbett Sporting Goods went through to find a new location. The final result was choosing Shelby County, specifically a 59-acre site at Shelby West Corporate Park in Alabaster, for its new 360,000 square foot
distribution center. The Showcase Feature will be Existing Business & Industry located in Shelby County and the surrounding areas. The membership luncheon will be held on July 31 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena, 500 Amphitheater Road, Pelham. Investment for members is $17 and future members $25. Reservations are requested by noon, Monday, July 29.
Door Prize Guideline for Luncheons The Chamber appreciates members providing door prizes at its monthly luncheons. This is an optional benefit to members, Showcase Feature participants, and future members. In the interest of the program concluding on time, the Chamber accepts up to 15 door prizes for each luncheon. If the limit has been reached, the provider will be asked if they would like for the door prize to be drawn for at a future luncheon or Chamber event (Business After Hours, Membership Reception, etc.).

Hazards of Ultraviolent Radiation to the Ocular System
Ultraviolent Radiation, commonly known as UV, is made up of invisible high energy rays from the sun that lie just beyond the violet/blue end of the visible spectrum. The anterior structures of the eye absorb more than 99% of UV radiation that is absorbed by the eye, small amounts reach the retina. There is good scientific data that leads us to believe UV absorption contributes to age related changes in the eye, such as cataract and other serious eye diseases such as pterygium, cancer of the skin around the eye, photokeratitis and corneal degenerative changes, and it may contribute to age related macular degeneration. Everyone is at risk. No one is immune to the UV related eye disorders. Every person in every ethnic group in both developed and developing nations is susceptible to ocular damage from UV radiation. UV Radiation is reflected off surfaces such as snow, water, or white sand. Risk is particularly high at the beach, while boating or on ski slopes. Individuals whose work or recreation involves lengthy exposure to sunlight are at greatest risk. Risk is greatest during mid-day hours (10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.) and during
summer months. UV levels increase nearer the equator so individuals in the southern U.S. are at a greater risk than other parts of the Country. UV levels are also greater at higher altitudes. Protection from sunlight can be obtained by using a brimmed hat or cap and UV absorbing eyewear. For outdoor use in the bright sun, sunglasses that absorb 99-100% of the full UV spectrum are recommended. Individuals who also wear clear prescription eyewear outdoors should consider using lenses that absorb the same spectrum. Labels should be examined carefully on over the counter sunglasses to ensure they absorb at least 99-100% of both UV-B and UV-A.
