EDITOR’S NOTE

O

ver the past several years, Shelby County has lost some of its status as one of the best-kept secrets in Alabama. That’s a good thing. As a result of more and more people discovering this secret, Shelby County’s population has exploded – growing more than 44 percent from 143,293 residents in 2000 to more than 206,000 residents in 2014. Shelby County’s growth has been fueled by a combination of factors, including excellent school systems, a plethora of recreational offerings, community festivals galore and so much more. The county offers something for everyone. Enjoy being in the middle of it all while being just outside of a major city? Shelby County’s got that. Enjoy the relaxation that comes with slow-paced country living? Shelby County’s got that too. Even though the county has a bright future ahead, it has not lost sight of how it got to where it is today. Several organizations, such as the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera and the multiple farms spread across the county, pay homage to days gone by in Shelby County’s history. You can read about these offerings in this guide. And you don’t have to live here to enjoy everything Shelby County has to offer. Why not take a trip to Oak Mountain State Park – Alabama’s largest – catch an event sponsored by the Shelby County Arts Council or visit the American Village? There’s a reason Shelby County is the fastest-growing county in Alabama. Schedule a visit, and who knows? You may just decide to become Shelby County’s newest resident.

The northern part of the county is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Central and southern Shelby County flattens out into farmland and pastures. The much higher population today – more than 206,000 residents according to a 2014 U.S. Census estimate – is a reflection of the county’s changing industries over the year, said Shelby County Historical Society President Bobby Joe Seales. In the mid-1800s, almost all of the county’s heads of households were farmers – 98 percent according to census number. “Then the Helena rolling mills came into existence, then the Shelby County Iron Works,” Seales said. “From there it went to lime rock, from there it went to cotton mills and from there it just boomed into everything.” The arrival of high-traffic roadways, such as Interstate 65, U.S. 31 and U.S. 280, helped connect Shelby County to Birmingham, and led to a rapid population boom. Today, new residents flock to the county for its unparalleled quality of life, including affordable housing, dozens of parks and plenty of opportunities for community involvement.

History on rails

Railroad Museum gives glimpse into past Story by JENNIFER BAILEY Photographs by JON GOERING

T

he Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, located in Calera, is known as the official railroad museum of the state of Alabama. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Club started

the museum more than 50 years ago. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Club is a chapter of the National Railroad History Society whose goal was to “preserve the sights, sounds and artifacts of railroading for future generations” according to the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum website. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum’s collection includes several different pieces of railroad history including operating standard and narrow gauge trains, two restored train depots, an indoor collection of railroad artifacts and memorabilia and an outdoor collection which includes railroad cars, locomotives and cabooses. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum is open to the public from March to December each year. Several events are offered throughout this operating season. The Calera and Shelby train rides begin in March and happen many times throughout the operating season. These train rides take you for an hour-

long trip through scenic Shelby County in fully restored, vintage train cars. Rides in the caboose or locomotive are available with the purchase of the upgraded tickets. The Cottontail Express runs the weekend before Easter weekend as well as the Saturday of Easter. The Cottontail Express will take you to Peter Cottontail’s meadow for an Easter egg hunt. A bouncy house, temporary tattoos, a coloring station and a sandbox will also be available to add to the Easter fun. Thomas the Tank Engine visits The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in April. The day consists of a ride with Thomas, Thomas-themed activities at the Imagination Station, story telling, a bouncy house, carpet golf and a bubble station. Fathers Day Limited is an event that the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum offers on the Saturday before Fathers Day. Fathers ride at half price if riding in coach and accompanied by one or more of his children. The ride through the forests of Shelby County will make great memories for fathers and children alike. In July, the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum holds Wild West

Day. The day features The Black Hat gang and a possible attempted train robbery. The Sheriff and detectives will be on the train to keep the law and ensure your safety if the Black Hat Gang does try to rob the train. The Pumpkin Patch Express runs every Saturday in the month of October. Take the train to visit the Great Pumpkin and pick out a pumpkin of your own to take home. The train takes you through the scenic autumn forests of Shelby County. In November and December, the North Pole Express takes a journey to the North Pole. Visit with Santa, Mrs. Clause and the elves, enjoy chocolate milk and cookies, sing Christmas carols and listen to a Special Christmas story. Make sure to wear your pajamas to make the experience even more fun. First class service is available. For dates, times and prices for these events, visit the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum’s website at www.hodrrm.org or call the ticket center at 757-8383.

Farms to visit in Shelby County Story by JENNIFER BAILEY Photographs by JON GOERING and DAWN HARRISON

W

hat do you see when you picture life on a farm? Livestock, crops, corn mazes and hayrides may come to mind. But what about Native American dancing, Civil War reenactments, skin care products, cooking classes and classes on how to make soap? Old Baker Farm and Stone Hollow Farmstead in Shelby County offer these things and more. Old Baker Farm was established in 1899 in Harpersville. The farm is run by Jerry Baker and his wife, Pam. Old Baker Farm has several different events scheduled during the fall and winter of 2015. The Harvest Season event begins on Sept. 26 and ends on Oct. 31.

During the Harvest Season event, children have the opportunity to pick out their own pumpkin to take home, interact with the animals at the farm and play in the corn and hay mazes. Western Cowboy Day is on Oct. 10. This event will have shootouts, western music, hay wagon rides and a trip to the pumpkin patch. Kids can come dressed in their western attire. The farm will also have their Cotton Pickin’ Celebration on Oct. 24 and 25. This event will feature a Civil War reenactment, an Indian Festival Dance, a trip to the cotton patch, a corn maze, a hay maze, wagon rides and a trip to the pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin.

According to Old Baker Farm’s website, the Cotton Pickin’ Celebration is “where everyone gets to see what life is all about on a real working farm.” All of these events at Old Baker Farm are $10 per person (Children under the age of 2 are free). The farm only accepts cash or check for payment. For more information, call 205-672-7209 or visit Oldbakerfarm.com. Stone Hollow Farmstead in Shelby County is another farm that offers several different activities to show what life on the farm is like. This farmstead is also located in Harpersville. Deborah Stone founded Stone Hollow Farmstead in 1999 with her husband and 35

daughters. The Farmstead began as a European horse breeding facility, but Stone began to develop the different techniques for everything else that the farmstead has to offer when not busy with the horses. This family business has grown to include several complementary businesses such as Stone Hollow Cannery, Stone Hollow Creamery, Stone Hollow Herbs and Botaniko Skin and NeoTegument medical skin care. Stone Hollow Farmstead has several different activities to show what life on the farm is like. These events include farm tours, farm school for different 36

ages and many others. The farm tours include visits to the grade A dairy and creamery, the vegetable and herb gardens, the chicken house and the honeybee hives. These tours are $15 a person and must be scheduled. Farm School is another activity that Stone Hollow Farmstead offers. The children or adults who participate in farm school will “experience the joys and challenges of farm life according to Stone Hollow Farmstead’s website. The participants will get the opportunity to tour the same facilities as those who go on the farm tours, but they will also have the opportunity to

learn about sustainable farming and animal welfare practices. Those participating in farm school should wear farm appropriate clothing including closedtoed shoes or boots. Stone Hollow Farmstead has different classes for different age groups who want to participate in farm school. These times, age groups and the prices are listed on their website. Stone Hollow Farmstead also offers other classes such as soap making, cheese making, cooking classes and classes on natural skin care. They also have a class called “Preserving the harvest in which participants will learn about making jams and jellies, pickling and making soups and sauces. All of these events are by reservation only. For more information on any of these activities, call 800285-8950 (extension 706) or visit the Stone Hollow Farmstead website at Stonehollowfarmstead.com.
