Bringing the magic of the holiday season to Vestavia Hills. Photo by Blair Ramsey Design by Jamie Dawkins

As we progress in age, the magic of the holiday season coincidentally seems to diminish. I was only 8 years old when my mother ripped the Band-Aid off, telling me Santa was but a figure of corporate commercialization. Truthfully, she coaxed me delicately, reminding me of the meaning of the season–but through an 8 year old’s lens–the news of the big man in a red suit being a fraud caused my world to destruct in a fiery inferno right there on our linoleum floor. Fast forward to when I was 19 years old, I was diagnosed with acute idiopathic pancreatitis on Christmas Eve and spent the holiday season in the hospital. My mother, friends, work colleagues and more all came to support me, leaving my 13-year-old sister, Amy, home alone during most of that week. I whined the whole week, making everyone revolve around my agenda. My family opened our Christmas gifts on New Year’s Eve that year. What I didn’t realize at the time was that Amy, God love her, had not only wrapped everyone’s gifts, but she had also wrapped her own. No one realized this because she gave the performance of a lifetime– one worthy of an Oscar–during the unwrapping. Seeing her eyes widen like saucers and hearing her squeal with delight at the “iPhone she totally did not know she was getting” became even funnier once we realized what happened. That was one Christmas I’ll never forget. Amy was so young, and yet, she managed to capture the magic of the Christmas season, cheering everyone up–even after my unexpected stint in the hospital. This same feeling John “Big E Santa” Ellis, who is featured on page 62, creates when he visits families’ homes, playing Santa Claus and taking photos with children. John has been playing Santa for nearly a decade and even though adults may no longer feel the magic of the season, he, like Amy, seems to remind everyone–especially those lacking holiday spirit–of what the season is all about. How? He believes the magic we felt as children is best experienced through a childlike mindset. By approaching the holidays with anticipation of fellowship, we are better able to feel magical–to love, to forgive and to bless one another more often than any other time of year. That’s why this season is more impactful than most. What I have learned this season is that for the magic never to die out, one must embrace that while Santa may just be a fairytale, what Santa symbolizes–fellowship rooted in love–is not. By focusing on giving and not receiving, we, as adults, can still feel like kids on Christmas. No matter what you may celebrate, I hope you enjoy this season and are reminded of just how loved you are, readers. Happy holidays!

“ ” THE QUESTION

What is your family’s favorite holiday tradition? My mother makes the strangest things for Christmas dinner–sushi, Big Macs–you name it. It’s always fun to celebrate and be a little unique.

My favorite tradition is my family always going to church on Christmas morning! We have a beautiful service and eat with our church family before going home to open gifts.

Every Christmas Eve, the Nance family makes gumbo, scratch-made bread and cinnamon rolls.

Baking cookies to turn into ornaments for the tree with my family!

My favorite holiday tradition is making hot cocoa on Christmas Eve with my family and riding around and looking at the Christmas lights in different neighborhoods.

My family picks a day when friends or guests will be here, and we decorate the tree and the house all together. We laugh, play games and watch movies, too.

Driving around in our pjs and seeing all the Christmas lights the neighbors put up!

I’m looking forward to the Christmas Parade and seeing the VH Rebel marching band march as they get ready for the Rome New Year’s Day Parade in Italy!

ARTS

ART THAT SPARKLES

Natalie Zoghby’s colorful paintings shine the spotlight on women making a difference. BY LAUREN DOWDLE PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEY VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 21

Glitter and paintings of influential women don’t normally end up on the same canvas, but that’s exactly what people will find with Natalie Zoghby’s artwork. Her colorful, vibrant pieces put a fun twist on icons— from Dolly Parton to Supreme Court justices. Not only do her pieces inspire others, but creating art has also helped her. Being dyslexic, Natalie recalls struggling in many of her classes as a student—but that wasn’t the case when it came to art. “Art was something I excelled at and was able to pursue and dive into on a deeper level than anything,” Natalie says. She followed that passion throughout grade school in Hoover, going on to earn a degree in art and fashion design from the University of Alabama and a graduate certificate in art and medicine from the University of Florida. In addition to creating artwork, Natalie also shared her talents with patients and families at places like Children’s Harbor by teaching art classes before COVID. “I really think the art and creative process has so

much healing power,” Natalie says. “I love to show people that putting a little bit of paint on a canvas will help them meditate and give them the ability to subconsciously process so many emotions.” Natalie now lives with her 5-year-old son in Vestavia, where she continues to follow her dreams as an artist—though her artwork has evolved through the years. Before the pandemic, she focused on abstract pieces, but after, she felt drawn to something different. “I wanted to create work that was meaningful and people could connect with,” she says. That started by finding something she connected with. As a lover of art history, Natalie says she saw how few pieces in galleries were created by women and wanted to narrow that gap to empower other women. So in 2021, Natalie debuted her “Women of Influence” series of paintings to highlight women who were making a difference. The glittery collection featured women like Dolly Parton holding a syringe, referencing her contributions that helped further the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. Other portraits included former U.S. VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 23

Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, singer Lizzo, poet Amanda Gorman and Vice President Kamala Harris. The pieces can be found at House Plant Collective in Avondale. “I was afraid people wouldn’t like it, but they connected with the collection in a way I hadn’t experienced with my other work,” Natalie says. “It was the first time I created a body of work that represented me. It was wonderful. From that moment 24 Winter 2023

on, I wanted to create work people would identify with.” Another woman who inspired Natalie was U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. After seeing the justice’s daughter sitting behind her mother during her confirmation, Natalie says she knew she’d found her next muse. The painting of the justice was featured in the Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook’s gallery for an exhibit called

Jones came by Natalie’s booth at The Market at Pepper Place and told her Justice Brown would be in town for the memorial service marking the 60th remembrance ceremony of the 1963 bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church. Natalie was invited to a private dinner a few weeks VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 25

later where she got to display the portrait and meet the justice. “I couldn’t have imagined that would have happened. She was so excited to see the painting,” Natalie says. “It inspired me to set my bar even higher for my dreams.” While she’s passionate about all of these pieces, she says painting people also makes her feel anxious. Natalie sometimes struggles drawing what she sees due to her dyslexia, but she’s learned to lean into that fear and work through it. But no matter what she’s creating, Natalie is always experimenting with new ideas. She uses materials like acrylics, spray paint, glitter, charcoal, spray foam and anything that helps her achieve the effect she’s going for with the different pieces. “I love bright colors and bold, expressive paintings,” Natalie says. One project where she puts that creativity to work is with creating the window displays at the Pizitz Food Hall. Due to the large size of the pieces, the project has been one of her more difficult creations—though she’s enjoyed the process. “I love making big art with glitter and spray paint,” she says. Natalie also participates in the ArtBLINK Gala each

During the event, she creates a painting live on stage with other artists. The artwork is then bid on as part of the silent auction, and for the past two years, Natalie’s pieces have won the highest bid. “I was concerned about bringing all of my glitter to a black-tie event, but they loved it,” says Natalie, who painted a six-foot-tall bottle of Dom Perignon champagne this past year. “It reinforced that if you follow your passion and what makes you happy, others will connect with it, too.” Natalie takes on commissioned works like family portraits as well, along with painting live at events like

Kara Anderson, a librarian in the Adult Services Department at the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest, has enjoyed reading from an early age. Kara is a compulsive Googler and enjoys connecting library patrons with the right information and resources. She especially loves helping them discover new books to enjoy. When not at the work, Kara is working on her master’s in library and information studies. Here, Kara offers five of her favorite holiday book suggestions.

A Literary Holiday Cookbook

By Alison Walsh | Cookbook For fans of “Little Women,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and more, “A Literary Holiday Cookbook” is a literature-inspired cookbook for voracious readers during the festive holiday season. Kara is excited to try Jo’s Hot Chocolate or whip up a batch of Sherlock’s Blood Orange Scones to hand out at a party. Overall, this is an absolutely gorgeous book that will offer fun ideas for the story-loving holiday party host.

Homecoming

By Kate Morton | Historical Fiction, Mystery Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959: At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek on the grounds of the grand and mysterious mansion, a local delivery man makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia. “Homecoming” is a captivating, eerie tale that sweeps a reader up and immerses him in the complex reverberations from a Pandora’s Box of familial secrets, sins and sorrows.

A Holly Jolly Diwali

By Sonya Lalli | Romance Despite 29-year-old Niki Randhawa’s love for music and art, she took the practical route and became an analyst. After she is laid off, she spontaneously hops a plane to her friend Diya’s wedding in Mumbai, India— just in time for Diwali, the festival of lights. London musician Sameer Mukherji helps Niki connect with her heritage and creativity after they join Diya and her husband and friends on a group honeymoon. This holiday romance is a warm, low-stakes story about the power of love and family obligations.

You Must Remember This

By Kat Rosenfield | Gothic, Thriller On Christmas Eve, 85-year-old Miriam Gardiner walks onto the vast frozen river behind her home. As a younger woman, she used to steal out on winter nights to meet her lover, walking straight across the ice to their secret meeting place. She knows the way—but not the year. Miriam, her mind clouded by dementia, doesn’t hear the snap of thin ice until it’s too late. A Knives-Out-style whodunnit with a twist of Taylor Jenkins Reid, “You Must Remember This” is an immersive gothic mystery, with a long-ago love affair, an icy death and a rich family gone bad, from Kat Rosenfield, the acclaimed author of “No One Will Miss Her.”

Love, Holly

By Emily Stone | Contemporary Romance A young woman tries to heal a rift in her elderly pen pal’s family in time for Christmas, all while falling in love—and maybe even reuniting with her own family—in this dazzling romance from the author of “Always, in December” and “One Last Gift.” Holly navigates a misunderstanding that threatens her romantic reconnection with a pen pal’s estranged grandson, as well as his strained relationship with his grandmother. This new release is an endearing and charming Christmas romance with a bittersweet ending. 30 Winter 2023

AN ARTIST OF PROMISE Colton Smith is triumphing over every trial, proving success is just one positive mindset away. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY KELSEA SCHAFER & CONTRIBUTED VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 31

32 Winter 2023

R

Rare does such a young individual gain a life’s worth of challenges, yet face each one head-on, with a courageous spirit of positivity. Vestavia Hills High School senior Colton Smith is one of these unique rarities, who inspires every person who is privileged to get to know him. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Vestavia Hills City Schools announced that Colton, who at the time was a junior, had won the Keynote Emerging Artists of Promise Award (KEAP) from the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Colton was only one of four theatre students nationwide to receive this award. “I was in utter disbelief when I found out I had received the KEAP Award and was incredibly humbled to be a part of such a vital and immersive experience so early on in my acting journey,” Colton says. Achieving such a high honor did not come without its challenges, however. Colton says his acting journey is but one facet of his artistic personality, and being an arts student in the Vestavia Hills school system has enabled him to succeed thus far. Born and raised in Milton, Georgia, Colton first became a student in the Vestavia Hills school district when he moved to Birmingham during his

fourth grade year. He then moved back to Atlanta for some time, then to Minneapolis before coming back to Vestavia Hills during his fifth grade year. Colton says he struggled growing up in a volatile family dynamic and relied on the arts not only as an asylum for emotional refuge, but also because he felt for the first time in his life that he could express himself. Colton first began acting in fifth grade, playing the part of Meriwether Lewis in the play, “Lewis and Clark.” Colton says he only tried out for fun, but getting casted as a lead allowed him to experience his first taste of being on stage, performing. “Acting became this great outlet [for me] as a young adolescent,” Colton says. “It was my first exposure to having a craft, having an extracurricular activity that you could really have the control to explore emotional depth and themes safely through the existence of other characters that resonate with issues you could be dealing with in your own life.” The more he became involved with the arts, the more he forgot about his troubles at home and was even able to excel both academically and artistically in school. He says it was if acting, in particular, saved him. Talking about his theatre teacher, Jamie VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 33

Pictured is Colton Smith with Jamie Stephenson

Stephenson, Colton says, “She has guided me throughout my entire high school journey so far. She’s done a great job of finding ways to make opportunities happen for me. That’s the biggest thing about winning the Keynote Award is that it demonstrated possibilities for me.” Colton credits not only Jamie, but also his band instructors, Jerell Horton and Heather Palmer, and his choir teachers, Taylor Stricklin and Noah Burns, for their guidance. Without them, he says, he would not have been able to be as successful as he is today. “I think this is only the beginning of his journey as an artist,” Jamie says. “He has always had the mindset of an artist, but I think that he is now empowered to live an artistic life whether it is onstage, film or in a board room.” Another reason Colton loves acting is because of how the field disciplines actors to become solutionoriented. During his freshman year, Colton performed in a school production of “Night of the Living Dead.” During one of the scenes not even halfway through the show, another actor forgot his lines and said the cue line for Colton’s death scene about an hour too early. Colton says he tried to improvise and get the other actor back on track, but the actor doubled down, saying the line yet again. At this point, there was no salvaging the scene, so Colton faked his death and ran off stage to assist the tech crew in helping the show go on. The hourand-a-half show turned into a 45-minute play, and even to this day, one of the funniest experiences of Colton’s acting journey, he says. 34 Winter 2023

ACTING OUT Colton is quite talented, but he believes hard work still beats talent when talent gets lazy. To improve on his skills, Colton took every chance he could to be in acting productions throughout his middle school and high school career. Here are a few of his latest performances:

fifth grade: Lewis and Clark sixth grade: The Sound of Music seventh grade: Mary Poppins Jr. with Red Mountain Theatre

seventh grade: The Miracle Worker

205- 638-PIRC (7472)

seventh grade: Annie Jr. ninth grade: Annie ninth grade: Night of the Living Dead ninth grade: James and the Giant Peach ninth grade: Xanadu 10th grade: The Comedy of Errors 10th grade: A Christmas Carol 10th grade: Anastasia 11th grade: The Little Prince 11th grade: Mamma Mia 12th grade: I Bring You Flowers

“Our arts departments do a very good job of coordinating with one another,” Colton says. “I’m really thankful to have excellent teachers who are so understanding.” Colton’s favorite production he was ever in was “The Comedy of Errors,” which was during his sophomore year. Colton, just having had a growth spurt and now towering over 6 feet tall, ended up playing a woman’s part that was rewritten for a man. Colton’s character was incredibly flamboyant, and with Colton having such a low register, talking high-pitch and acting feminine came as a fun challenge. This show, Colton says, was also a competition show that Vestavia Hills High School performed at Trumbauer. Although Colton says this was his hardest character yet, he ended up winning best leading

performance at the state competition that year. During his junior year, Colton ended up shredding his labrum and was forced to navigate his high school arts career a little differently. He could no longer march in the band, perform in show choir and acting was difficult, too. But, if there’s anything about Colton that helps him stand apart from the rest, it’s his innate ability to take any tough situation and spin it into his favor. His positivity exudes from his infectious smile. Colton was selected to audition for the Southeastern Theatre Competition in Lexington, Kentucky, during the fall of his junior year. Having just started physical therapy from his surgery, Colton could barely move his arm and struggled to get into character. However, like any good actor, he knew the show must go on. Colton performed a Shakespearean monologue and a recitation from “Greater Tuna” for a panel of nearly 100 representatives, which resulted in Colton getting 42 callbacks and winning the KEAP Award. Richann Stage, who has taken in Colton like one of her own children, says Colton’s ability to overcome obstacles and just shine is an amazing

Acting became this great outlet [for me] as a young adolescent. attribute of his personality–one that people are drawn to. “Colton is a bonus to our family, and we have enjoyed the positive energy he has brought into our home,” Richann says. “He is quick to know his audience. People are drawn to his charisma, and his reputation precedes him. We could not be more proud of him.” Looking forward, Colton says he wants to double major in acting and pre-law in college. He says acting will always be a part of his life, and while he would like to pursue a career in the field, he is also interested in becoming an attorney in entertainment law, specifically in fighting against AI voice

reproduction. Colton believes that acting is what gave him his voice, so his career should be focused on being a voice for the voiceless–or better yet, helping other people learn that their life’s obstacles are just a few bumps in the road on one’s journey to achievement. After all he’s been through, Colton says that art– and the people who he has come to know and love through it–are why he’s kept pushing to overcome. Success, he says, is only sweet if one has his loved ones to celebrate with at the finish line. FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Carol Li

Vestavia Hills High School Senior PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Each fall at MIT, nearly 250 female mathematicians from the United States and Canada compete in the annual Advantage Testing Foundation/Jane Street Math Prize for Girls, which is the largest math prize for girls in the world. The foundation’s aim is to encourage young women in STEM, promoting both gender equity and leadership in the field. Vestavia Hills High School senior Carol Li not only competed in the 2023 competition, but she also placed 42nd out of nearly 250 students competing. Here, Carol offers her thoughts on her experience competing. What would you like our readers to know about you? I’m a senior at Vestavia Hills High School. In my free time, I enjoy biking, painting and cooking. I’m involved with the math team, the speech and debate team, the school newspaper, Vestavia Ambassadors, Amnesty Club and various honor societies.

Like most of the other competitors, I went for two days from Oct. 7-8, and I took the exam on the morning of the second day on Sunday, Oct. 8. On the first day, there were numerous games, activities, lectures and tours at MIT that we could attend–all of which had to do with mathematics. The second day was primarily focused on the competition. It was a two-and-a-half-hour test with 20 What are your plans post graduation? questions, so there wasn’t as much time Honestly, I’m not quite sure! I’m to relax. Personally, it was pretty fun and currently in the middle of the application sometimes stressful, of course, but I did process, but I’m hoping to study really enjoy touring MIT at the same time something STEM-related, preferably and meeting up with some old friends something to do with math (I’m applying that I hadn’t seen since the COVID-19 for a major in applied math). I will go to pandemic. I ended up doing a lot better than I expected, so I would definitely college, but I’m not quite sure where. encourage other girls to try and apply for Tell our readers about your competing the competition. in the Advantage Testing Foundation/ What intrigues you about math, Jane Street Math Prize for Girls. 38 Winter 2023

specifically? I like to think of math as a puzzle, not so much as a step-by-step procedure that a lot of students like to memorize. There’s not always a “right” way to solve a problem, and so often on the math team we work to find the easiest, most elegant approach. That’s what I like about math itself. As for competing in math competitions, it’s always fun to meet people from other states and countries. The competitors are often incredibly talented, so it’s always a humbling, fun and inspiring experience to get to know people. What advice do you have for other young females in STEM? You can do it! There are a lot more opportunities and organizations opening up for girls in the STEM field, so don’t be afraid to look for them.

FOOD

CREATION IS AN ART George McMillan’s life story is peppered with creating good food. BY BRENDA LADUN PHOTOS BY UNTOLD IMAGERY VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 39

G

George McMillan, who is the head chef and owner of FoodBar in Vestavia Hills, says he had a great culinary family, with two grandmothers who were great cooks. One grandmother was a Southern cook, and the other was quite talented in creating great dishes. Food fascinated George from an early age, and cooking was his way of giving back to his family. “My mother cooked breakfast, but she worked so didn’t have enough time to cook a lot,” George says. “I started cooking breakfast for the family to give mom a break.” Like a quarterback, he has taken those early lessons and run with them towards a successful business that is an iconic restaurant nestled in Heights Village. When diners talk about going out for fine dining, FoodBar is one of the top choices in Birmingham. George uses the lessons he learned early on and combines them with other instruction from some of the area’s best and most prestigious chefs. “My first restaurant job was at Arman’s in Mountain Brook, where I met my wife,” George says. “Arman worked on cruise ships and got inspiration from spots all over the world for his cuisine. Those travels broadened his palate.” George later on went to work for Chris Hastings at Hot and Hot Fish Club, where his experience elevated his career and exposed him to a different set of gourmet skills. There he learned the flow of food, working with a team and delegating responsibilities. “It was a trickle down from Frank Stitt, the famous chef and owner of Highlands Bar and Grill,” George says. “Seeing those relationships from farm to table helped elevate the dishes. Chris worked under Frank, then Chris taught me.” George says the fellowship between restaurant owners in Birmingham is one reason the city excels as a foodie scene. “With the finer restaurants in Birmingham, instead of a competition, it’s more like a fraternity,” he says. “It’s nice to have light posts—people we learn from. Then, we go out on our own.” Birmingham’s proximity to fresh, Gulf of Mexico

FoodBar is that kind of place, where friends can meet, visit, share stories and cultivate friendships. The serpentine bar filled with the finest wines, beers and spirits also sets up a prime setting for such an atmosphere. “Our wine list is long with high caliber and high quality drinks,” George says. “We have seasonal spirits, including a house-made pumpkin spice

While the fried oysters never disappoint, the eggplant fries in a tomato and basil marinara or coriander crusted tuna are delicious, upscale appetizers that should not be forgotten, either. After graduating from Mountain Brook High 44 Winter 2023

School, George toyed with working for the CIA. However, his passion for cooking led him to stay in Birmingham and glean from the best in the business. “I was lucky to be able to learn about the [food industry] from chef owned and operated businesses,” George says. “It’s my passion. A restaurant scratch kitchen is like a live animal. You have to keep it clean and fed.” At FoodBar, George says one can get high-caliber

food and service in an unpretentious atmosphere. “It’s like me—straight and to the point,” George says, chuckling. George always knew he wanted his restaurant to partner with local farmers like his mentors did, too. “Having an ear for the season and an eye for what looks the best is key in creating a place where my diners can be adventurous and feel comfortable with what they eat,” George says. “We keep it fresh and offer a variety of appetizers that range from 10 to 15 items. Our portions are proportionate to what the price is.” George says he doesn’t like small portions, so he doesn’t provide them for his diners. He wants people to feel as though they get what they pay for, hoping every customer leaves feeling both full and fulfilled, too. Running his restaurant is like a process–a science in which consistency is key in staying afloat. Everyone working together creates a great environment not just for the staff, but also for the customers. “Everyone is paddling together–my best cook is just as important as my dishwasher,” George says. “I care just as much about the people who walk in

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Josh Cosio

Owner of Cala Coffee PHOTO BY BRENT BOYD

Josh and Melanie Cosio opened Cala Coffee in March 2021. Originally, they began roasting coffee at home. From there, Josh built a coffee cart, so that he could take his roasted coffee and create beverages for people to enjoy at farmers markets and other events. In 2022, he decided to go all-in and open a cafe, which became the Cahaba Heights location that opened in January 2023. In October 2023, he decided to take a shot at revitalizing an old coffee shop space in downtown Birmingham. Here, he offers insight on the founding of Cala Coffee. Why was opening a coffee shop your dream business? When we first started, I was handling everything from sales to marketing to roasting, but we have since started adding great people to our company. I love it because it allows me to express my creativity, work with a great team of people and provide a fun space for the community. We have a unique opportunity to make a positive, daily impact for our guests–as getting coffee is often the first thing people do each day.

and the products we serve. Our coffee cart is also really special. It’s an elevated catering experience, where we can offer full cafe-level hot and iced drinks in a mobile environment.

What coffee would you recommend newcomers try first, and which coffee is your favorite? One of our most popular drinks is our honey cinnamon latte. We use local honey from Eastaboga Bee Company! My personal favorite is a little less exciting. I usually drink an iced Americano, which is a doubleshot of What types of products does Cala Coffee espresso with water and ice. This season, we serve, and which make this business have a fantastic pumpkin spice latte made with housemade syrup using real pumpkin. stand out from other similar brands? We have three main areas that we focus For non-coffee drinkers, we have great on: our cafes, our coffee roasting and our matcha from Man Eating Tiger and a coffee cart. While we do focus on roasting collection of loose leaf teas from Color the best coffee that we can, I think one thing Theory Tea Co. that sets our cafes apart is the atmosphere we create outside of the products that we Tell our readers about Cala Coffee’s serve. We take a holistic approach to creating recent expansion. Our Cahaba Heights location is open a warm and welcoming environment, from Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. and the colors on the walls, the music playing 50 Winter 2023

Sunday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. In addition to our coffee and tea menu, we expanded to serve pastries from Bandit Baking and breakfast tacos from Ladybird Tacos. As we get settled, we also plan to use the space for fun events such as poetry or open mic nights. One thing that sets us apart downtown is that we have almost 50 seats inside for people to work or study. What motto, mantra or words of advice do your staff members live by when it comes to serving customers? “Create Good Days” is our slogan that we try to live by. To us, that means that we have the opportunity to play an important role in the daily lives of our customers. If we can start their days with a positive experience, that can help them go off and create a good day. Our goal is to use coffee as a tool to help others create good days. BEAUTIFULLY ECLECTIC Jim and Laura Griffo’s midcentury modern home reflects the beauty in their inviting personalities. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEY & CONTRIBUTED VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 51

D

During their 47 years together, Jim and Laura Griffo have created a beautiful haven full of inspiring, artistic pieces and eclectic design. Their humble abode is a staple of architectural craftsmanship in the heart of Vestavia Hills. Jim worked as the Director of Corporate Design for an architecture firm, Gresham Smith, in Birmingham for 27 years and now teaches architecture and interior design at Samford University. Laura taught high school English with the last 20 years of her career at the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School. When Jim and Laura first purchased their home in 1988, he drew up the plans for the home’s three-phase renovation. “One thing that appealed to us about the house when we first came in was the open ceilings with the tongue and groove design and exposed beams,” Jim says. “We liked that look a lot.” Before moving in, Jim and Laura focused on updating cosmetics, swapping out fixtures and finishes. They then took down dark wood paneling on the living room and dining room walls, including the mirrored wall where the China hutch now stands. The couple then gutted the entire kitchen, den

and bathrooms, building from the ground up. Laura says the original kitchen floor tile was an offwhite color with flecks of red, blue and green. The house’s original family, who were the only other owners other than the builder, had painted the stone on the outside of the home sage green. Jim says he and Laura lived in the house for a few years before they found someone who could remove the paint from the stone, which afterwards revealed the house’s beautiful, variegated stack stone design. Jim and Laura’s home architecturally reflects midcentury design with the low-slope roof and exposed ceilings, but their interior decor is more of a plethora of artistic appreciation they consider an expression of their style. “This isn’t a museum of midcentury modern,” Jim says. “I would describe it as midcentury modern in craftsman style.” Strolling inside, one first notices beautiful artwork including woven tapestries, Native American pottery, glass work, a vintage model car collection and perhaps most interestingly, baseballs sporting company logos from nearly every decade and state. “Our home is uniquely us,” Laura says.

Tongue and Groove Ceilings The tongue and groove ceiling and exposed beams are original to the house’s 1957 build. VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 53

Kitchen Jim sketched out his ideas for the renovation, and Appleseed Workshop oversaw the final design and construction. Jim notes that the house already had wood ceilings and since they added wood floors, he and Laura opted out of having wood cabinets to avoid the kitchen looking “like a sauna.” Their interior designer, a Samford graduate herself, chose this gray-washed design for the cabinets for a sleek design. LEFT: The chairs are surprisingly from IKEA, and the table was custom-built to fit this nook. ABOVE: Jim and Laura chose a multicolored granite for their countertops to coordinate nicely with the cabinets and backsplash.

Dining Room The dining room table and chairs are made of teakwood and reflect a Danish-modern style. The China hutch was a wedding present from Laura’s parents. The focal point of the room, however, is the beautiful Agam-style painting–an original painting on cotton by Cornelia Breitenbach–which is mounted on corrugated fiberglass, producing a 3D effect. 54 Winter 2023

Living Room Jim and Laura purchased the royal blue sofa and rattan chairs early on in their marriage. Jim designed the travertine marble end tables and had them built for their home. Both the living room and dining rooms’ rugs were also designed by Jim and custom-made for the home.

An Aspiring Collection Jim and Laura have traveled all over the world, but some of their favorite places to visit are actually here in the United States, particularly New Mexico. Laura is a connoisseur of Native American pottery, so Jim included display cases in their renovation plans to display her ever-growing collection.

Showcasing Greatness One of Laura’s favorite aspects of their home is the hanging display case in their kitchen, which showcases some of her favorite glass art pieces she’s acquired from The Netherlands, Italy and of course, thrift shops, too. The stainless-steel case, designed by Appleseed Workshop, has flush lighting shining both from the top and bottom to make the glass art shine and to illuminate the cooktop, too. 58 Winter 2023

Jim’s Baseball Collection Jim collects company-logoed baseball memorabilia and displays them around their home.

Beauty in All Things Montgomery-based artist and interior designer Ashley Stahl created this beautiful eggshell piece called “Singing the Blues” for Jim and Laura.

Yuletide Cheer JOHN “BIG E SANTA” ELLIS HAS BEEN BRINGING THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS TO VESTAVIA HILLS AND BEYOND FOR YEARS, REMINDING EVERYONE WHY CHILDREN ARE THE BEST PART OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE | PHOTOS BY BLAIR RAMSEY & CONTRIBUTED

62 Winter 2023

Keeley McGee can feel her son’s tiny palms tugging in hers–as he tries to break free and catch a glimpse of the sweet-smelling man dressed in bright red and white, who just waltzed through the front door. Little McGee–with eyes as big as saucers–squeals in delight as the man chuckles, bellowing a hearty, ‘Ho, Ho, Ho!’

Keeley finally lets go, watching her children scamper up to Santa, practically jumping right in his lap. It’s the third year Big E Santa has made a guest appearance from the North Pole in the McGee family living room for Christmas photos. Keeley smiles softly, watching her kids giggle as they tug playfully on Big E’s snow-white beard. She remembers her parents trying to keep the magic of Christmas alive, even after she stopped believing in Santa. Here she stands decades later with happy tears, feeling the magic of Christmas awake in her again while watching Santa enact “The Night Before Christmas.” This love feels warm and happy, she thinks.

Big E, though towering over 6 feet tall, kneels down to each child, playing with their toys with a twinkle in his eye. No matter the toy or the year, Big E knows most of the toys boys and girls seem to want. Although, kids can surprise him. One year, a child asked for a baby brother. Big E replied that was a wonderful wish, and he would check with the child’s parents, giving a wink to the parents. The next year, the family visited Big E, and they had a new baby boy! Big E says this was such a special memory he cherishes to this day. Some children’s wishes tug on his heart strings, he says. During a different visit, a child asked Big E for a bed—her own real bed. He says it was really VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 63

64 Winter 2023

difficult not to jump up right then and get that child a bed. But, no matter the request, Big E listens and says he will see what he can do. As Keeley watches her own kids play with Big E, she chuckles, watching them quiz Big E on what reindeers eat, which is carrots, by the way. Big E is sure to tell them he must not let Dasher out of his sight, or else cheeky Dasher will sneak some peppermints, causing Comet and Cupid to go into a frenzy. Little McGee pipes up, asking, “How come you came in through the front door, Santa?” Big E smiles warmly, cuddling the child and says, “That’s because my magic doesn’t work in the daytime, only at night.” The clock’s hands soon point South, and Big E concludes his debut, slipping out the door while the kids aren’t looking. Another child’s day was made, and it’s all thanks to the man in the suit himself, John Ellis.

John first began dressing up as Santa at one of his office’s Christmas parties, and soon, people began requesting his guest appearance year after year. Nearly 10 years later, John has become the city of Vestavia Hills’ most coveted figure each holiday season, appearing at events such as the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting, the Vestavia Hills Holiday Parade, Breakfast with Santa and more. Not only does John play Santa at city-wide events, but he is also available for bookings, coming to families’ homes to take pictures with children. Though playing Santa has become a fun job, John says it never feels like work. “It puts me in the spirit of Christmas because I’m able to go out and be in a crowd and make people laugh or smile,” John says. “It is a great feeling. I enjoy it. It makes me happy, and I hope I make the people I see happy as well.” John also partners with several nonprofits and VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 65

businesses, appearing as Santa to fundraise for charity. Each Christmas season, John pays a visit to the Tangles hair salon in Vestavia Hills. If children bring a new, unused toy to donate for Toys for Tots, they can get their picture taken with “Big E Santa,” which is John’s holiday moniker. John says his favorite events to play Santa at are the ones that seem to make a difference in another person’s day. One year while attending a Christmas party at The Exceptional Foundation, John slipped in the back, waiting for the party goers to realize Santa was there. The DJ cut the music, announcing Santa’s arrival. An enormous cheer erupted from the crowd, as the students turned and dashed towards him, nearly knocking him over with bear hugs. “There are many times I may not be in the greatest mood, but I put that suit on and went to my event and immediately perked up because of 66 Winter 2023

how fun it is,” John says. “I play Santa Claus to bring a smile to people’s faces.” Young or old, people seem to love Big E Santa when he spends time with them, making them feel as though they’re the only ones in the room. For the past few years, John has played Santa at several fraternity and sorority socials at Auburn University–his alma mater–and jokes that for the first time in his life, girls actually want their picture taken with him. What is special about these socials is that many of these same students are ones John watched grow up in Vestavia Hills. John says he hopes Big E will be invited to other universities’ socials soon. Kym Prewitt, a family friend of the Ellis family, says she and her husband first met John while they were all students at Auburn. More than 40 years later, they’re all still friends whose kids have grown up together. “Everybody who knows John loves John,” Kym says. “John really does have many of the qualities of Santa. He is jolly and is actually one of the wittiest people I know. He is kind, and his heart is huge! We have served on church mission trips with him, and he ministers with love. He truly spreads the joy of Christmas every day.”

Kym, a former Vestavia Hills High School teacher, says John even came to help fundraise at several school events such as at the annual RISE charity basketball game, which raised money for cancer research. No matter where he goes, John inspires the good in people, she says. Keeley, too, shares that she looks forward to John coming over for Christmas photos every year because he is a wonderful reminder of how to appreciate the yuletide season–through the eyes of a child. She first met John on a walk through their neighborhood and later learned he played Santa, so she booked him to come over one year, and he has become a family tradition ever since. “John works really well with kids of all different types of needs,” Keeley says. “He’s very patient, and he is authentic. He takes a lot of time with each child and makes them feel comfortable. It took my son forever to warm up, but he was like, ‘No rush. We won’t pressure him. He’ll be fine. I’ve got time.’ I think the patience he has is phenomenal.” Part of what makes Big E Santa authentic is the dedication John takes into making his character come alive each season. Not only is his suit custom-made, but his hair and his beard are real,

too. In fact, John gets his hair and beard lightened each November to prepare for his “Santa” appearances. “I try to think like a child,” John says. “When I started thinking about playing Santa, I thought, ‘What should Santa smell like?’ I went to the grocery store and bought a bottle of peppermint oil and put some on my neck and shoulders because I think Santa Claus should smell like peppermint.” Keeley adds that John has mastered the character, making parents feel as though he is the kindest man in the world. She says John makes sure never to park in front of a family’s house, so the children never see Santa arrive in a car. Even if children are not getting photos with him, John makes sure every child knows they are loved. “We had a neighbor who wasn’t having pictures made with Santa but saw him and got excited,” Keeley says. “He didn’t rush off. He took time

with that child and asked what they wanted for Christmas. John really makes sure that every child feels special.” While John has been playing Santa for the better part of the last decade, he does not have plans to retire anytime soon. If he can spread joy just by dressing up and playing the part, then it is worth it to him to continue spreading the magic of the season. “Santa Claus embodies the goodness in humanity, but children embrace this goodness every day,” John says. John believes the -John Ellis best way to celebrate Christmas is to appreciate what children bring into everyone’s lives. If by celebrating children, adults feel the magic of the season, let it be known that Santa is merely a reminder of what the magic truly is–love. HIT THE ROAD

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY IN NAPA By Christiana Roussel | Photos by Visit Napa Valley & Contributed

Whether you’ve been to Napa a dozen times or this Northern California destination is just now rising to the top of your travel bucket list, proper planning will ensure you’re able to experience the most of this singular hot spot.

VestaviaHillsMagazine.com 75

HIT THE ROAD

BACKGROUND Napa Valley is one of those rare and wondrous regions where the climate, soil and topography—often referred to as ‘terroir’— meld to foster the ideal environment for growing outstanding grapes. These grapes are then painstakingly and lovingly converted into wine, making this some of the most covetable farmland in the country. At its core, Napa Valley is a farming community. Agriculturally, Napa Valley was classified as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981, as California’s first AVA. This designation establishes defined growing areas which reflect regional-specific terroir. Within the Napa Valley AVA, there are 16 distinct—or ‘nested’—AVAs with names you’ll surely recognize: Stags Leap, Atlas Peak, Rutherford and St. Helena. Relaxed, convivial, teeming with pride and eager to share the bounty of their home, locals welcome visitors year-round to experience their life’s work. 76 Winter 2023

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO With such a wealth of things to do and see, sip and taste, planning a trip to Napa can feel a little overwhelming. You want to do it all! Enlisting the help of a dedicated and experienced travel advisor ensures you spend less time in the car and more time immersed in Napa culture. Birmingham resident Anne Tilson Varner founded Portiera Travel as a way to share her love of the region. “I’ve spent the past two decades traveling to Napa, and in that time, I have gotten to know and become friends with so many wonderful people,” Anne says. “Locals are the greatest asset in planning Portiera excursions, and I am grateful for these cultivated relationships.” Her office boasts bookshelves of binders created for friends and clients, each with well-timed itineraries and lists of not-to-bemissed hotspots. Anne says three or four days in Napa is a great place to begin your journey. portieratravel.com

HIT THE ROAD

HIT THE ROAD The length of Napa Valley runs roughly 30 miles, from downtown Napa to Calistoga on the North end; in between, you’ll find the towns of St. Helena and Yountville. Each town definitely has its own vibe and feel. In downtown Napa, trace your way long the Napa River to The Oxbow Public Market, which shows off the best of this agricultural region and is a must-do. Pop into Gott’s Roadside for an epic burger before you hit your afternoon wineries. Yountville is as picture-postcardperfect as you can imagine (and home to Thomas Keller’s Michelin-starred The French Laundry restaurant), while St. Helena is a shopper’s dream (La Bohème and Christopher Hill Gallery are two favorites).

and burrata on toast. Make sure you find the hidden entrance to the downstairs pub for a clubby vibe. Serious culinary enthusiasts will want to pop in to the Culinary Institute of America for a tour and a nosh. If spas are your thing, then head straight to geothermal hot springs-centric Calistoga, where founder Samuel Brannan modeled the entire town on the hot springs of Saratoga, New York. The mud and mineral springs here are known to have a therapeutic effect like no other. Earn that massage with a bike ride to Old Faithful Geyser of California.

Still not sure where to begin in planning your trip? We asked Anne to put together a sample itinerary for readers, with notable places to If you’re feeling peckish, plan a stop at Goose stay, wineries to visit and her favorite & Gander for some chicharrones or mushroom restaurants:

South Napa

Resort: Stanly Ranch, an Auberge Resort Property (Budget Alternative: Andaz Napa) Tasting: Hudson Ranch (amazing Chardonnays; beautiful property) Lunch: Farm at Carneros Resort Tasting: Darioush Winery (interesting architecture and history) Dinner: Scala Osteria

Mid Napa Valley

Hotel: Poetry Inn, a luxurious B&B perched above Silverado Trail. (Budget Alternative: The Estate Yountville) Tasting: David Arthur Vineyards (high above Pritchard Hill with spectacular views) Lunch: Brix Restaurant in the Garden

78 Winter 2023

Tasting: Staglin Family Vineyards (philanthropic family and where the 1998 version of “The Parent Trap” was filmed) Dinner: RH Restaurant Yountville (Alternative: if you want a casual dinner, head towards Ciccio, newly reopened)

North Napa - St. Helena / Calistoga

Resort: Meadowood Napa Valley (Budget Alternative: The Bungalows at Calistoga eclectic, warm fun) Tasting: Heritage School Vineyards (interesting history and amazing property) Lunch: Sam’s Social Club Tasting: Schramsberg (founded 1862, famous for bubbles and more)

Dinner: Brasswood Bar & Kitchen (look around for some of the local vintner rock stars who are known to haunt this place) Anne is quick to note that while many of the larger wineries accept walk-ins for tastings, the smaller boutique wineries request or require reservations. “Often times, guests are meeting the vintner themselves, touring their family’s vineyard, with a private tour of the operations,” Anne says. “These are intimate experiences, best planned well in advance.”

NAPA FOR THE NON-DRINKERS You don’t have to be an oenophile or imbibe daily to enjoy Napa Valley—there are plenty of activities here that don’t require stemmed glassware. •

BIKING—Napa Valley Vine Trail—this 12.5-mile trail that runs from South Napa to Yountville will eventually become a 47-mile walking and biking trail system. Rent ebikes from Napa Valley eBikes.

HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES—Combine your bike adventure with a hot air balloon ride at Napa Valley Bike Tours, or book an escape with Napa Valley Aloft.

MUSEUMS & PERFORMING ARTS—Wine isn’t the only culture here. The di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art merits a visit, while viewing the sculptures of Napa and Yountville beckon in the afternoon. The notable Rail Arts District (RAD) features two miles of interactive public art, easily viewed on foot or by bicycle.

KAYAK or SUP on the Napa River

HIKING—There are more than two dozen trails in the Napa Valley area alone—pick up a local guide or plan your route in advance using the Trail finder feature of visitnapavalley.com. You can sort your stroll by level of difficulty, length or vista, and if you happen to time your stay with the full moon, join up with the folks at Napa Valley Land Trust for their scheduled nighttime hike.

SPA DAY—There are more than a dozen spas in the area, many of which offer the signature Calistoga mud bath treatment that will have you channeling your inner zen in no time.

NAPA COMES TO BIRMINGHAM TUMTUM TREE FOUNDATION

As America’s longest-running wine auction supporting children’s charities, TumTum Tree Foundation has attracted Napa Valley winemaker luminaries to Birmingham for more than 30 years. What began in Frank and Pardis Stitt’s beloved Bottega dining room has grown into something altogether life-changing. From that first year where $25,000 was raised for Magic Moments, TumTum Tree Foundation has grown, now boasting more than $16 million in donations, positively impacting the lives of children engaged in services provided by The Red Barn, Mitchell’s Place, Camp Smile-a-Mile, UAB Arts in Medicine and several others. MY VESTAVIA HILLS DR. TODD FREEMAN Superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools

Sentimental Spots

Hiking Trails One of our favorite family memories since we have lived in Vestavia Hills is hiking the walking trail behind the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest. It was a mainstay for us during COVID. When we were not on the trail, our boys were learning how to ride bikes on Central field.

Service through Leadership

Get Outdoors

Friday Night Lights My family spends much of our time at the ballfields. We love Friday nights, watching the Rebels play football. Several nights a week, we will be at either Cahaba Heights Fields, SHAC or Central Field playing games and practicing.

Making Memories

Shades Mountain Baptist Church We are members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. In the last five years, Shades Mountain Baptist Church has been a wonderful place for our family to grow in our faith and strengthen connections to other families in the community.

Eat Local

Martin’s BBQ and Baumhowers Pictured is me; my wife, Rachel; and my boys, Sam and Jake. We love to eat at Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint. The outside tables are our go-to sitting. The BBQ nachos are a favorite dish along with the smoked turkey and fries. My favorite meeting place that includes a meal, however, is Baumhower’s Victory Grille, and I will almost always order the char-grilled black and white chicken wrap. The fries are a great side even after ordering the chips and salsa.

104 Winter 2023

Superintendent of VHCS My favorite part of my job is to watch our next generation learn and grow. I have the privilege of attending arts shows, musicals, sports competitions and seeing the outstanding students we have in our system exceed expectations. I never cease to be impressed when I visit a classroom and watch the mastery of our teachers. There is beauty in watching the educational process take place, and I have the blessing of seeing it happen.
