STEVEN HELLER
CAROL WELLS
Ode to Ink Saturated Paper Steven Heller, the art director of the New York Times Book Review and the co-chair of the School of Visual Arts MFA/Design program, speaks about the powers of posters. Posters, when you think about it, are a funny thing; they are simply sheets of paper saturated in ink. Despite this simple fact, these posters are able to advocate the manifestation of a charged social of political idea. According to his article, these ideas are used to inform and illuminate, stimulate and inspire, agitate and attack. The power of posters can be significant. It can be the source of information, a saving grace, or an inspiration. Heller describes that a truly effective advocacy poster should last the test of time. They should still be effective years down the road. A successful way in making this happen is by appealing to emotion. An example from Ode to Ink Saturated Paper came from the Vietnam War when Americans were ordered to pacify villages, in turn using napalm and killing many innocent children and women. Designers capitalized on the poster title “War is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things.” It made outsiders aware of the deadly event and was a rallying point for peace activists. Why the Poster in the Internet Age? Carol Wells, an art historian, writer, curator, and activist, compares the modern usage of electronic posters as well as the original use of print posters. She too uses the example of wars saying that posters dating back to Vietnam were synonymous with protesting. They became a way to spread the word of revolution and the aspirations of countries, as well as showing current political issues. Wells describes the impact of the Internet on advocacy posters, as we know them. She poses the question, “is the Internet replacing the protest poster?” The Internet is a much faster way to spread a message or campaign. However, there is still the problem of the Digital Divide. Though it seems that computers are easily accessible, there is still a large percentage of low-income families that can’t afford the extra expense of the Internet, let along a computer. There is still significant power to a printed poster seen on a street corner, bulletin board, in a lawn, or on a billboard.
MY REACTION
Steven Heller and Carol Wells covered all the points of an advocacy poster. Heller’s examples of strong poster titles and appeal to emotion resonated with me. I agree that it is important to catch the viewers’ eye, but not to confuse them. I can also see the power of an image driven poster that has a source or website at the bottom of the page, leading you to learn more. By using strong images and titles suggesting things such as dead children, it almost gives the viewer no choice but to agree with the message of the poster. Wells’ idea about the Internet is very important in my opinion. Everything we do now is driven and made easier by the Internet. But is it? I think the Internet, although it provides excellent resources, makes visual imagery too much of our everyday life. When you see something so often it is easier to move past it without looking or taking in its message. I think print posters, if executed correctly, can be stronger than Internet imagery. By images, medium, and even the placement of the posters, the message can be greatly

A Piece from Paradise Lex Drewinski Silkscreen, 1993 Berlin, Germany
This piece caught my eye because I recognized the original use of the hands. It is mimicking the hands of Adam and God, but ‘Adam’s’ hand is shown flipping off the creator. This made an impression on me about how humans’ faith in God and their almighty creator has lessened. There is little text, except for the small title in the top right corner of the poster. The hands have been reduced to silhouettes, making the poster feel modern and timeless at the same time. Because there is little text accompanying the image, it made me more interested in learning and doing further research to find out. I find that extremely successful because it leads the viewer to another place- capturing their interest.

War is Good Business Lambert Studios, Inc. Offset, 1969 United States
This poster is based off Michelangelo’s ‘Pieta.’ This icon is known as showing the grief of a mother as she holds her slain son. This poster utilized the iconography and related it to the Vietnam War. Heller’s essay talked about powerful imagery especially through tough historical events such as this one. Many innoncent mothers and children were killed when the Americans used Napalm to gain control of towns etc. The description of this poster states, “the added text parodies advertising slogans, war profiteering, and the military-industrial complex in which generals and politicians sit on corporate boards. This poster caught my eye because of the modern text with the classic iconographic statue. I don’t think this text is as effective in the title because it isn’t trying to change your mind, get your support, or inform of news. It simply shows a point of view illustrated. I do like that the colors of the poster as a whole is red (text), white (statue), and blue (background).

Do Women Have to be Naked to Get into the Met Museum? Guerilla Girls USA, 1989
This is one of the most recognizable logos in the world, so naturally when I saw it I wanted to see what the poster was about. (I also used to work at Starbucks so that made me even more curious). Sadly, this is not a poster advocated for Starbucks, but against their high fees and prices. The poster is so well designed that if you skimmed over it you may not notice it says ‘Starvebucks HighFee.’ The poster was made to protest the fact that Starbucks still sells milk from cows injected with rBGH. rBGH was approved by the FDA in 1994 as a drug that would help cows produce more milk. This drug has since been proven to be harmful to humans and cows. If Starbucks would just reject this milk it could be eliminated from the market. Starbucks also doesn’t offer much support for Fair Trade Coffee farmers. This poster is one of my favorites.
Guerilla Girls Guerilla Girls were formed in 1985, possibly including some of America’s premier women artists. They make appearences dressed in Gorilla masks to keep their identities secret as they protest sexism and racism within the art community. An ‘weenie count’ caused an upset among women artists when they found that only 3% of the artists in the Museum of Contemporary Art were women, but 83% of the nudes were female. I think the title is fabulous- Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum? Just reading that will draw in the reader to want to know why/what women are naked. This advocacy poster has more text than most the others I looked at. I think that is necessary to get a clear point across, especially with the statistics. This poster is similar to “War is Good Business because it utilizes modern text and color with classic art (in this case a painting).
Rape Line A quote from the artist, “I did this poster for the campus Rape Line that had just been established at Penn State. Much to my amazement the poster was not put up around campus-the image was considered too frightening by those in charge of the Rape Line!”
Rape Line Lanny Sommese USA, 1986
I found that pretty funny and just thought “how di you think the rape victims felt?” Of course it is frightening. I think the poster is effective in getting your attention, however it seems to be focusing more on the horrible act of rape, than the help on the other end of the Rape Line. Effective, but I think it sends a conflicting message. The text is minimal so it can be remembered easily. It is also very rugged in design, which suits the style of the poster.
iRaq
iRaq Forkscrew Graphics USA, 2004
Another very familiar poster design. Apple does a great job of consistent design that draws people in. That could be good for this advocacy poster because people like to see these ads, or it could be bad because it would be easy to skip right over it without realizing it was advertising iPods. According to the exhibition description, this poster implies the use of torture in the U.S. military prisons to protest the U.S. occupation of Iraq by exploiting the recent usage of the iPod campaigns. Thie typography is simple and stays true to the advertising Apple laid out, and it doesn’t overwhelm the viewer with too much text. I think the placing of this poster would be the most important aspect of it since it is so recognizable.

OVERVIEW OF In 2011 the organization Open World Cause was introduced to ORGANIZATION KU by students Ben Honeycutt and Connor Janzen. It had started at their high school as a senior project and grew to a full organization as they entered college. The basis of this project was to raise $2000 to send to the Shantideep Adarsh Vidhyasadan (SAV) School to give them two laptop computers and Internet for a year. A local Nepali named Govinda Panthy started the SAV School with 13 children from the village in 1998. Govinda’s contact with Ben’s father formed the connection that would lead to the Open World Cause. Ben’s father Kevin is an international speaker that connects with teachers and students around the world through his website called Art Snacks. Art Snacks serves to encourage children and teachers to pursue education in an artistic way; this website helps create lesson plans for just that. As Ben and Connor started school at KU they learned that because of renewal issues of their lease, the SAV School was to lose half their school building and a portion of their students. That is why Ben and Connor brought this mission to KU in hopes to help raise $15,000 for land, construction, and labor costs. A mission of Open World Cause is we believe in education as a revolution. We have the power to change the world from the keys of our devices, and we are attempting to take full advantage of that. The students of the SAV School do not see many of the privileges most would consider absolute necessities in education. Through our work with these dedicated students and staff, we have created collaborative efforts all over the world. We are proud to say we believe in change, no matter where it starts.
AREAS OF ADVOCACY
The bigger focus is on how to start hands-on learning initiatives in the classroom with tools and testimony. That supports what they believe is a curriculum capable of maintaining the potential for revolution in school. Advocacy is public support of a specific policy. That is something that Open World Project needs help with- getting the word out! Open World Cause is attempting to build a school in rural Bageshwori, Nepal. We are also a global initiative, working to

TARGET The target demographic for Open World Cause is students beDEMOGRAPHIC tween the ages of 18-25 years old, that have a heart for children, mission/service work, teaching, education, or issues dealing with poverty. Because this is a relatively new organization, the target audience will most likely be students at KU with the characteristics listed above, and for people looking to get involved (especially because those who are involved play a huge role in the success due
to the low involvement by students on campus). Once this demographic starts helping out they are very likely to stay connected because they see tangible progress and have direct contact with the school in Nepal as well as the founder Govinda Panthy. Students that have travelled abroad, dealt with impoverished children, or have done service work in the past will have an easier time connecting with this organization. That is because they will have more of an emotion connection and past experiences to connect with the SAV School.
TARGET MARKET
On another note, a target market can be extremely beneficial as well. A marketing equation relating to the product, where it is placed, and how it is promoted is crucial. KU students as a whole might have a base level interest since it is an on campus organization. But targeting students and teachers in places such as the education classes, global studies, study abroad, Greek life, or even service groups such as alternative breaks, can be extremely beneficial. That is not to say all those specific groups will be interested in helping out, but the type of people that attend those other groups may be more willing to help out with Open World Cause because of the type of work and service they would be providing.

Headline: The Only School in all the Land Statement of Problem: One unfair landlord is jeopardizing Nepali students’ chance for a proper education by using parts of their school for his own benefits. This causes students to be turned away for lack of space in the Shantideep Adarsh Vidhyasadan School. Solution: All they need is a hero. By helping Open World Cause raise $15,000 those students can buy new land and build a brand new school with sufficient resources. You can be that hero. Direct Action: Donate to this cause. Change, dollar bills, or checks can mean a brighter future for the children and community of Bageshwori, Nepal. Headline: Nepal is Calling: Answer or Deny? Statement of Problem: Open World Cause’s connection with Nepal SAV School allows you to make a difference internationally. Students at the SAV School are faced with intense poverty, lack of teachers, lack of education, and lack of support. Their connection to the outside world is very limited. We have a direct connection and the means to help, will you answer? Solution: Raise awareness on the KU campus to allow for more successful fundraising. The SAV school is calling for help with funds. Direct Action: Get anyone and everyone involved. Step one: let them meet the kids. Skype Nepal and see if you can deny their call for help. Headline: It’s a Small World After All
Statement of Problem: WE are all part of the same earth. WE are all humans. WE all have human rights…right? Nepal students from the SAV school are not provided with proper education. Solution: By fundraising, we are able to provide education to children in Nepal. They are part of our future; we want them educated to help us all make the best decisions of our earth. Direct Action: Collecting donations to this school and raising student’s global awareness will allow Open World Cause to help out fellow Global Citizens of Nepal gain proper education. Headline: Do Better Statement of Problem: Because students from Nepal are under educated how can we expect that generation to grow up and be leaders; change the world for the better? Solution: “When you know better you do better” is a quote by Maya Angelou. When these students know better they can grow up to get better jobs and educate their families. Direct Action: Again, raising money is the best thing we can do to help. If they have money they have resources and when they have resources they can “Do Better.” Headline: SAV(e) (a play on the school’s name and the word Save) Statement of Problem: Ownership discrepancies have caused the current owner of the land that the SAV School is built on to take back parts of his land for personal use. This causes students to be turned away from the school for lack of space. Solution: Save the Students’ future. They need a safe haven; new land and school. Direct Action: Find donations from local book stores, global services, and students. Headline: Call on Me Statement of Problem: Communication was the first barrier that Open World Cause had. In order for the SAV school to keep up with the resources and lesson plans, a new school has to be built for these students. Solution: Raise Money
Direct Action: Get students interested in donating money. Make a pool for those who donate (like a raffle). Winning could mean talking with a child in Nepal. Headline: Global Citizen Statement of Problem: It is hard to reach out beyond our luxurious life in America. As global citizens it is in our duties and power to make change, no matte where in the world it is. Nepal SAV School needs help building a school and buying new land. This is because the current landowner keeps taking the school’s land, depriving students of education. Solution: Educate our society on what it is to be a global citizen, ask if they are able to help. Raise money. Direct Action: Get donations by tabling on Wescoe beach. Hand out flyers to those who pass by and recognize those who helped on social media. Headline: Can It. Statement of Problem: Nepal students in the rural area of Bageshwori, have a lack of resources, room in their local school, and lack of funds. Solution: By raising money, KU Students are working to help buy the SAV school new land and build a new school building. Helping brighten the future of rural Nepal. Direct Action: “Can It” could be a play on the idea of Campbell’s soup or alphabet soup. We can place cans for donations around campus and the city of Lawrence to raise money towards building the school. This will also be a great way to get the word out. Headline: Wanted: Dead or Alive Statement of Problem: “The educated differ from the uneducated as much as the living differ from the dead.” –Aristotle. If the students of the SAV school in Nepal aren’t educated how can they be active citizens in the world we all live in. Solution: Raise money and awareness. Relate it to them. Direct Action: Partner with a company/group/person and say that for every dollar donated the other person donates 50 percent.
Headline: Connect the Dots Statement of Problem: With lack of resources it is hard for the students of the SAV school to experience much outside rural Nepal. With less and less students being able to attend school because there is not enough room, students are missing out on important education. Solution: Raise money, and get connected. Allow students to get directly involved. Direct Action: Donate $1 and get a button from Open World Cause. Donate $5 and be added to an email list with updates on the school, kids, and fundraising. Donate $10 and sit in on a Skype conversation with Kids and founder/teacher Govinda Panthy. Donate $25 get a tshirt and any of the before mentioned items. Donate $40 get a tshirt, button, email, and skype directly with a child (like a virtual pen pal) and stay connected with them.

The Final Concept Statement
Open World Cause is a group of students dedicated to fundraising money to provide educational resources to students in rural Nepal. The Shantideep Adarsh Vidhyasadan (SAV) School has had recent issues with funding and land rights, denying local children the chance for a good education. Open World Cause has a goal to raise $15,000 to help buy land and build a new school. By donating and helping raise awareness, the students of Nepal can receive an education and grow to be leaders in their society. Go to www. openworldcause.com to learn more about the SAV School and fundraising.
ADVOCACY GROUP
Open World Cause is a student organization started by two undergraduates at The University of Kansas.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Target audience is undergraduate students that are looking to get involved, like children, and are interested in a global community.
PROBLEM
Children in rural Nepal are being denied an education because of lack of space in schools. The owner of the land where The Shantideep Adarsh Vidhyasadan (SAV) school resides has slowly been taking away parts of the land, causing children to be turned away.
SOLUTION Open World Cause hopes to raise $15,000 to buy land and build a new school for the children at the SAV school in rural nepal.
ACTION
The goal is to raise the money on campus and in the Lawrence community (locally). It is run by students for students.

The Reflection
How did the concept influence text Challenges/Successes of designing Advocacy and Awareness Change in attitude Challenges staying on message Translation between posters
thoughts/ message/ challenges/ attitudes
Reflection
INFLUENCE OF The concept of my posters influenced the colors, style, and theme. CONCEPT I wanted it to look hand drawn and incorporate typical school icons such as ruled paper and childish images. The type was especially influenced because it is made to look like chalk on a chalkboard. The thinner hand type is supposed to be similar to practicing handwriting. The image of the computer was to incorporate the specific advocacy group because they are able to Skype with the children in Nepal. The flags are prayer flags are a well-known symbol of Nepal. The biggest challenge of designing these posters was finding a balance of incorporating styles from the organization Open World Cause and Nepal culture. The organization is student run and relatively new, so they did not have many design elements for me to work with. I think incorporating the computer and skype symbols was successful because it symbolizes being able to talk to the kids as well as visiting the Open World Cause website.
AWARENESS Being involved with the advocacy has certainly changed my awareness. It has made me more interested in the cause and has compelled me to know and understand more about life in Nepal. Because the school is in Nepal, a challenge presented itself in connecting students. It is hard to help something you cannot physically see or help out with. Allowing students to Skype, opens a door between us and Nepal. In the end I ended up changing my color palette and style. I was hesitant at first, but can see that it represents the culture of Nepal.
ATTITUDE
My attitude on the subject hasn’t change much, but my compassion towards this cause is bigger. Education is a necessity for future success.
CHALLENGES As designers, I think we all struggle with wanting a good design versus really portraying the heart of the subject. It can also be hard to put as much emphasis on the supporting text as is put in the
headline. My challenge with the problem was showing people that it was about a specific school in Nepal, and not just education in general. The action has never changed. TRANSLATION OF POSTERS
These posters work pretty well together. The translation from type to image is that they both use similar colors and similar styles: bright, fun, education, childish. The type poster emphasizes what actions you can do with the organization. The image poster emphasizes the connection between us and Nepal and that we can Skype an actual school that we are helping. It also shows that you can visit the website to donate or learn more.
