Welcome
I consider it a great honor to speak about my community of Shell Knob. I love sharing all the wonderful things that make it a unique place to live or visit. Of course, Table Rock Lake gives us a variety of ways to enjoy the water – fishing, boating, skiing and kayaking to mention just a few. Come off the lake and we have Mark Twain National Forest that surrounds us and provides hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Nature is plentiful everywhere. One morning I woke up to the squawking of crows outside my bedroom window. As I looked out I was witness to a bobcat and squirrel involved in the ultimate “cat and mouse” game in a tree not 20 feet from my house. Mentioning deer, turkey, fox and bald eagles would just scratch the surface of all the wildlife you can see here. The most wonderful attribute of this area is the true sense of “community”; businesses, residents, churches, and organizations working together to make Shell Knob a very special place. It has been said and proven many times over; once you visit us you always come back! Twilia J. Harrison Executive Director Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce

The Great Forest Table Rock Lake spreads across the White River Valley for miles. A pelican swoops just above the serene water’s surface as a mink scurries along the rocky shoreline. Persimmon, sassafras, dogwood and serviceberry trees line the terrain’s lower slopes. As the hills rise to the Ozark ridgelines, the mighty hardwood oaks, hickories and walnuts dominate. Higher up, cedars spread out along their preferred line of elevation. Thousands of acres of the Mark Twain National Forest surround the Shell Knob area of Table Rock Lake. These forests were once exploited; the pines, oaks and cedars extensively cut down to become railroad ties, fence posts and pencils. In the 1930’s, much

of the land in the White River Valley was purchased by the State and Federal government and protected as National Forest. The land was replanted or allowed to regenerate naturally. Millions of tree seedlings, including shortleaf pine, were planted to restore the great forest. Today, the National Forest provides many opportunities to enjoy this extensive outdoor paradise. Improved roads pass through this wooded landscape, revealing expansive views out toward the lake, vistas of spectacular fall colors and hidden hollows of misty Ozark culture. Some numbered county and Forest Service roads within the National Forest are open to use by all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles with a special permit. These less-travelled routes put you in touch with nature, yielding access to secret waterfalls, ancient bluff shelters and soaring natural bridges. Mark Twain National Forest has hundreds of miles of hiking trails. These pathways are ideal for short hikes or longer backpacking adventures. Quietly communing with the forest allows an up close and personal experience with the tiny wildflowers on the forest floor, to the flying squirrel scampering up a chinquapin oak, to an eagle gliding above the verdant canopy. For a truly wild experience, Piney Creek Wilderness Area, just north of Shell Knob, has several trails through this protected vital region. Accessible by foot or horseback only, Piney Creek offers trails and primitive camping that reveal what the original Ozark forests must have been. The forest offers many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Using the trails and roads allows access for picnicking, bird and wildlife watching, photography, camping, kayaking and canoeing, hunting, and fishing. Some activities are restricted or require special permits, so it is always important to check regulations at a Forest Service center or on line at www.fs.usda.gov/mtnf. Make a plan, tell someone where you are going and prepare to enjoy the experience of the great Ozark forests around Shell Knob and Table Rock Lake.

Table Rock Lake
A Fishing Paradise At normal pool elevation of 915 feet, Table Rock Lake spans 43,100 acres of clean, clear water and has 745 miles of forested shoreline. This pristine environment is home to a diverse population of fishes. From the renowned black bass, including the largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and hybrid bass to the ancient paddlefish, Table Rock provides an ecological system in which many fish species thrive. It is no surprise that the lake attracts anglers yearround to enjoy the many different types of fishing available. Shell Knob is situated on the quiet side of the lake with good access to excellent fishing prospects for all available species. Located at the confluence of the White and Kings Rivers, Shell Knob is near two major Corps parks, Campbell Point and Kings River. Shell Knob is also centrally situated near many fine free-flowing streams for those anglers who want to enjoy stream fishing. Shell Knob sponsors a variety of fishing tournaments for fishers with different styles and experience. The Homer Sloan Buddy Bass Tournament will hold its 39th annual event this year on
- 22 www.shellknob.com | 417-858-3300
the first Saturday in October. A multi-species tournament is planned for May and encourages anglers to catch some of the varied fish species in Table Rock. Last year, Shell Knob was the headquarters for a River Bassin’ tournament. Canoe and kayak anglers came to Shell Knob from across the nation to fish for bass in the many Ozark streams in this area. Fishing Table Rock in the spring can be very productive and rewards the angler with beautiful Ozarks scenery. Bass fishing starts early in February and continues to improve into June; often yielding some of the biggest fish of the year. White bass make their runs up the tributaries in early spring and can provide exciting action. Spoonbill snagging season typically starts March 15 and yields the largest fish in Table Rock. Soon the crappie are moving into brush piles en masse. Summer brings plenty of action for all types of fish. For the novice, bluegill and other panfish are available in numbers and often provide the first fishing success for children. Catfish are very active in the summer months and can be caught using a variety of methods. Autumn is a time when many fishes move into shallow areas of the lake, feeding on shad. Black bass, white bass and non-game species like gar, carp and drum become easier to find and see in the clear, shallow areas. Trout and walleye prefer cooler water, so winter can be a good time of year to seek these game fish. Walleye often move up the James and Kings Rivers in January. The upper end of Table Rock in Arkansas holds managed populations of rainbow and brown trout (Arkansas regulations apply). Table Rock Lake spreads through the scenic, rocky and wooded Ozark Mountains along the path of the White River. Exploring the arms and coves of the lake provides an interaction with the natural world and presents diverse opportunities for fishing.

History of
Table Rock Lake
Once, not that long ago, the Ozarks was a pristine wilderness. Rivers and springs had carved the ancient uplift mountains creating the deep valleys and underground karst topography. Situated between the vast eastern forests and the great plains, the Ozarks became home for a diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna. Along the rivers, massive sycamores leaned out over the streams, their tangled root systems gripping the bank. Impenetrable swaths of cane brakes fringed the waterways. Deciduous trees and shortleaf pine groves draped the hills and ridges. Open glades provided a home for unique plants and animals. Deer, turkeys, wolves, bears, pumas and eagles made this wilderness their home. Giant alligator gar and freshwater eels plied the rivers. The first peoples in the Ozarks, the Native Americans, lived with nature and took advantage of its diversity. They changed the landscape little, if at all, and now only their stories and hidden artifacts reflect their presence here. The first European settlers to enter the Ozarks made their homes near the abundant water. The Ozarks developed slowly. Most homesteads were small and the land was not suitable for any large scale farming. Small corn fields in the river bottomland helped sustain many Ozark families. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, vast swaths of the primeval forest were clear-cut. The pines, oaks and cedars were cut, slid off bluffs into the rivers, and rafted downstream where they became railroad ties, fence posts and pencils. The naked ridgetops became profitable plots for growing strawberries and tomatoes. Removal of large areas of forest and non-sustainable farming practices contributed to erosion and loss of what little topsoil existed in the rocky Ozark uplands. - 40 www.shellknob.com | 417-858-3300

Wildlife suffered during this period as well. Overharvesting and loss of habitat significantly reduced deer and turkey populations. The wolf, bear and puma had already been essentially eliminated from most of the Ozarks. In the 1930’s, thousands of acres were purchased and became the Mark Twain National Forest. Seedlings were planted, many by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Ozark forests were rejuvenated. Some areas, like Piney Creek, have been set aside as wilderness areas. Sound conservation practices eventually began to improve conditions and the deer, turkey and eagles returned. Perhaps the change to most alter the Ozarks ecosystem is the building of the large dams on the major rivers. All of the White River within Missouri is now impounded. With the closing of the dam gates on Norfork, Bull Shoals, Table Rock and Beaver, the twisting White River Valley was changed forever. The big reservoirs create their own ecosystems. Many riverine life forms have adapted well to the deep lake waters. Others like switch cane, Meek’s crawfish and the hellbender have struggled to find suitable habitats. Despite the changes the Ozark ecosystems have seen, the Table Rock Lake area is still a thriving world for a diverse population of plants and animals. Previous and on-going efforts by conservation groups have preserved and rehabilitated the woods and waters of these Ozark hills. The Shell Knob area of Table Rock is surrounded by this wild world. The lake contains healthy populations of many fishes; the forests harbor deer and turkey, even bear. Looking closely and quietly reveals a hidden world of biota- the elusive ginseng and morel, the pileated woodpecker, a freshwater jellyfish, the puma, a fringed orchid. Tread lightly, listen, look up, look down. The exceptional Ozarks is all around us, perhaps changing, but always fascinating.
