FLORA & FAUNA Expressions of Nature
Executed in bronze, ceramic, glass, paint and mixed media, the artworks in Flora & Fauna express the beauty of nature. Guest artist potter Martha Grattan of South Carolina joins Shell Point residents including potter Augusta Crane, painters Betsy Conrad and Renée Chastant, and potter and glass artist Annie Wainwright, to create a magical world of animals, insects, flowers and foliage. A highlight of the exhibition, The Pond displays spectacular ceramic lily pads, a ceramic frog, whimsical birds and insects flying overhead, and surrounding images of pond flora and fauna.

At age 83, photographer Sallie Rich was inspired to photograph the elaborate courtship ritual of great blue herons. For two months, she drove every night from Fort Myers to Captiva Island to photograph a pair of nesting herons at exactly the right angle of the sun. The result is a spectacular series of photographs that debuted in 2019 at the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. The entire series is on display for the first time in Tribby Arts Center in this exhibition.

The John Pizzareli trio — with John as guitarist and vocalist, Mike Karn on double bass and Konrad Paszkudzki on piano — plays the best songs of the last 50 years from timeless artists such as James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Queen, and Bruce Springsteen, delivered in a singular style that entertains and informs. Pizzarelli has cultivated a winning career by singing classic standards and late-night ballads and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra and the songs of writers like Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime revivalists of the Great American Songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing. Pizzarelli has been playing guitar since age six. Following in the tradition of his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, he was exposed to all the great jazz music of the era, from Erroll Garner and Les Paul to Django Reinhardt. At age 20, he began playing with his father then went out on his own, and since 1992, the Pizzarelli Trio has toured extensively. The union of New York City natives Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel produced some of the most memorable sounds of the 1960s, owing to the powerful combination of (mainly) Simon’s songwriting and their dulcet harmonies, which belied an acrimony that was never resolved. Despite that, and after famously calling it quits by 1970, they rose to the occasion when they were asked by the City of New York to raise funds for the badly needed renovation of Central Park. Pietro will be introducing each piece for a more complete musical and educational experience. Born in Salerno, Italy, Pietro started studying piano when he was five years old. Since the age of nine, he has been performing publicly in recitals and with orchestras both in Italy and abroad, gaining acclaim from both audiences and critics. He appeared in prestigious music festivals and concert series such as the International Festival of European Conservatories Montepulciano, Maggio della Musica Naples, Concerti a villa Guariglia Vietri sul mare, and Friends of the Music Ministry at St. James Cathedral, Orlando. Besides his performing activities, he has been teaching for over 18 years in Italy. In 2013, after a petition to validate his artistic titles, U.S. Homeland Security granted him an O1 visa given exclusively to individuals who possess extraordinary ability in the field of sciences, arts, education, business or athletics. The quintet eliminates the “fourth wall” between musicians and audience by often performing from memory, creating an intimate connection. This personal performance style, combined with the ensemble’s three-pronged mission of artistry, education and community-building, lends WindSync its reputation as “a group of virtuosos who are also wonderful people, too,” per Alison Young of Classical MPR. WindSync launched an international touring career after winning the 2012 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2018, they were medalists at the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. “Love Letters,” an award-winning play by A.R. Gurney, begins when Andrew Makepeace Ladd III accepts an invitation to Melissa Gardner’s birthday party. Melissa’s thank you note launches a romantic friendship and correspondence destined to last for almost half a century. The friends communicate with each other through boarding school experiences, European adventures, failed marriages, and career moves. Over the course of their lives, Andy and Melissa’s relationship goes through many changes, as they remain each other’s most trusted confidante. While spanning five decades and numerous locations, “Love Letters” is staged simply, with two actors behind desks letting their words describe a world of emotion. Florida Repertory Theatre Artistic Director, Greg Longenhagen and his wife, longtime local theatre professional, Liz Abbott, star in this tender and unforgettable love story.
