Our Mission Shell Point Retirement Community, a nonprofit ministry of The Christian and Missionary Alliance Foundation, Inc., is dedicated to the service of God and the care of His people by providing a broad continuum of quality residential alternatives and services designed to enhance the independence and dignity of its residents through spiritual, social, recreational and physical programs.

Greetings! Our Celebration is a wonderful time to reflect upon the generosity of our residents and to express our sincere gratitude for your kindness to our community. With a grateful heart, as I look back at 2023, I am reminded of the dedicated volunteers and donors who gave selflessly of their time, talent, and treasure to make Shell Point a truly special community. One of the many highlights in the past year was the opening of Wright Wellness Center. Born of generosity and a desire to meaningfully impact residents’ well-being, this incredible addition embodies the spirit of vitality within our community. It also represents Shell Point’s continued commitment to exceed resident expectations and provide a place where health and happiness flourish. Our dedication to the mission of serving God and caring for His people remains resolute. Our mission guides us forward into 2024 as we continue to serve those entrusted to our care. It is with joyful anticipation we look forward to the year ahead.

Shell Point continues to distinguish itself as a leader in retirement living. This year, several awards affirmed our community’s commitment to excellence across a variety of areas.

America’s Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities Shell Point has been recognized among “America’s Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities 2024” by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.

Best Place to Live Shell Point has once again been recognized as a premier retirement destination, earning a spot on ideal-LIVING magazine’s annual list of the “100 Best Places to Live” for the fourth consecutive year. Shell Point’s campus was lauded for its amenities, sense of community, walkability, proximity to healthcare, and beautifully maintained homes and landscaping.

Best Nursing Home Shell Point’s skilled nursing center, the Larsen Health Center, earned well-deserved recognition for its high quality of care and overall performance with “Best Nursing Homes” designations from Newsweek for the fourth time and from U.S. News and World Report.

Best in Wellness Shell Point received an ICAA NuStep Beacon Award for Best in Wellness 2023. The award recognizes senior living communities fostering an environment that embraces wellness as a way of life for all who live and work in the community. Using the seven dimensions of wellness as a foundation, these communities partner with residents and staff to create relevant, meaningful opportunities that empower participants to improve their quality of life.

An Award-Winning Design Larsen Health Center’s design received an honorable mention distinction at Environments for Aging’s 27th annual Design Showcase, a yearly awards program that recognizes outstanding achievements in the design of senior living communities.

Great Place to Work Shell Point has been certified as a “Great Place to Work” by the Great Place to Work Institute—a global authority on high-trust, high-performance workplace cultures. Through its certification programs, Great Place to Work recognizes outstanding workplace cultures and produces the annual Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. Shell Point ranks 16th among the Top 100 Employers by the Lee County Economic Development Council. We employ 1,100 people in a wide variety of positions, including healthcare, administration, construction and trades, dining and hospitality, transportation, sales and marketing, resident life, housekeeping, landscaping and grounds, maintenance, and more.

Best Workplace in Aging Services Shell Point has been recognized as one of the 2023 “Best Workplaces in Aging Services” by Fortune Media and Great Place to Work, the global authority on workplace culture. One of only two Florida retirement communities to earn the designation, Shell Point ranked 13th among the 25 best large senior housing companies to work for in the country. Companies were only considered if they are a Great Place to Work-Certified™ organization. All employees were invited to join in a special celebration of this impressive recognition.

Best Workplace for Commuters Shell Point demonstrates its commitment to employees by its investment in the partnership with Commute with Enterprise to offer a commuter program to our 1,100 employees. Shell Point supports over 20 commuter vehicles, driven by our employees who share a ride with their co-workers each day. This commitment to our team members earned Shell Point national recognition as a “Best Workplace for Commuters.”

Community

Shell Point remains committed to maintaining excellence throughout the entire community. Each year, investments in new construction, improvements, and exciting additions—along with maintaining the highest of standards in existing neighborhoods—ensures that Shell Point continues to exceed expectations.

Island Expansion and Redevelopment In 2023, Shell Point introduced expansion and redevelopment plans for The Island. Vista Cay, a new collection of 59 independent living residences, will offer captivating views of the Caloosahatchee River and Sanibel Island. Island Commons, a new resident amenity space, will serve as a welcoming place for Shell Point residents to gather and enjoy an array of activities with their neighbors. The commons will offer a convenient community store and market, alfresco and indoor dining options, a fitness room, FineMark National Bank & Trust, library, classrooms, guest accommodations, and an array of resident amenities. The Legacy Foundation and additional Shell Point staff offices will also be located on site.

Campus-wide Improvements The construction of the new On Par guardhouse was completed at the entrance of Coastal Links, serving as a warm welcome to Shell Point Golf Club and Tribby Arts Center visitors and Shell Point residents alike. In Palm Acres, a beautiful new home was completed. Around the community, crews were busy with restoration projects in King’s Crown, Harbor Court, Sundial, and the Garden Apartments, as well as in Eagles Preserve, The Village Church, the Welcome Center, The Springs, and Connected Living. As Shell Point continued to recover from the effects of Hurricane Ian, seawalls were repaired, canopies were replaced, and beautiful landscaping was added to complement our campus’ natural beauty.

A New Era of Wellness at Shell Point With Wright Wellness Center, Shell Point re-envisioned its approach to resident health and wellness—and created a new hub of integrated programs, activities, and services that encourage an active, vibrant, and fulfilled lifestyle for all. During an October dedication ceremony and open house, residents gathered to celebrate the grand opening and tour the completely transformed 38,000-square-foot building in the Coastal Links neighborhood. Wright Wellness Center includes an expanded Seagrape Salon & Spa, a 7,000-square-foot fitness center with stateof-the-art of Technogym Biostrength equipment, and a specialty treatment room with innovative therapeutic equipment to enhance functional longevity. Additional features include a pair of group fitness rooms and Shell Point Golf Club’s new Trackman golf simulator room. Upstairs, Vue—Shell Point’s new 92-seat dining venue featuring panoramic vistas overlooking Shell Point’s championship golf course—opened to rave reviews.

Tops in Technology Shell Point is committed to giving our staff the tools and technology they need to provide our residents with the best possible care. This year, Shell Point is implementing innovative technology in Larsen Health Center that enhances service for its skilled nursing residents. Reinforcing our dedication to innovation and quality care, Shell Point is introducing a revolutionary new AI-powered safety solution within Larsen Health Center. This new inroom technology utilizes contactless radar sensors that arm our healthcare professionals with real-time insights about resident well-being. Shell Point increased the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across its 700-acre campus this year with the addition of 18 Blink EV chargers for resident, visitor, and employee use in The Island, Woodlands, and Enclave neighborhoods. Offering EV chargers enhances the appeal of our community to current and future residents—and supports Shell Point’s environmental stewardship initiatives.

A Year in Review

Looking Back at 2023 Each year, our annual Celebration event is an opportunity for residents to gather together to celebrate the unique people, places, programs, and projects that make Shell Point an exceptional community.

Celebration 2023: Better Together Hosted by the Legacy Foundation, the 2023 Celebration event offered residents the opportunity to commemorate the accomplishments of 2022 and celebrate our community’s continued success in fulfilling its mission each and every day. The theme illustrated that we are “Better Together” whether we are volunteering to help others, or joining forces to generously support programs around campus.

Shell Point Games The Resident Life team hosted the 2023 Shell Point Games—a signature biennial event that celebrates the camaraderie and spirit of friendly competition at Shell Point. Residents of King’s Crown, The Arbor, The Springs, and Larsen Health Center got in on the fun as well.

Earth Day Shell Point’s Green Team invited a number of local organizations to visit the campus for Earth Day, including CROW Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.; J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge; Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation; Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, and more. Residents had the opportunity to view several different electric vehicles, try out Pedego electric bikes, and sample a delicious plant-based appetizer prepared by Chef Justin from the Palm Grill. 12

Shell Point Open A total of 144 golfers, including Shell Point residents, local business partners, and guests, gathered to tee off for a worthy cause at the 19th Annual Shell Point Open. Together, they raised more than $80,000 to benefit the Larsen Health Center at Shell Point.

Honoring Our Veterans Shell Point’s veterans group has been an important resident resource for 14 years. Together, they commemorate Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and National Vietnam War Veterans Day each year. In 2023, 22 Shell Point veterans who served in the Korean War, Vietnam, and during the Cold and Gulf Wars gathered at Page Field in Fort Myers for the flight of a lifetime in a Boeing Stearman biplane with Dream Flights.

Joyful Gathering Shell Point residents and staff gathered together at Friendship Point to mark the six-month post-Hurricane Ian milestone with a celebration of our life together at Shell Point. With the significant majority of displaced residents returned to their homes and the campus restoration well underway, the event was the ideal opportunity to look back, see how far we had come—and reflect on all God has provided.

Independence Day The Resident Life team coordinated an amazing celebration of our country’s birthday this year. Neighbors cheered on their friends as they paraded through the campus with festively decorated golf carts, cars, and even kayaks! The fun continued with a barbeque lunch at The Crystal and a spirited all-American concert at The Village Church.

In the Spotlight Tribby Arts Center was designed to nurture residents’ creative spirits, engage their minds, and enrich the lives of all those it touches. In 2023, a vibrant season of programming wonderfully supported this goal. In February, nearly 400 guests attended the Tribby’s Open House—an event that showcased the work of our resident artists,crafters, photographers, quilters, musicians, and writers who love to share what they do and inspire others to get involved. From Fanciful and Styled Steel, to Seven Months Since and Flora & Fauna, a variety of amazing exhibitions within the Tribby’s galleries displayed the incredible talents of artists and artisans, both from Shell Point and beyond. The Tribby delighted audiences with many sold-out performances on the Connie Brown Hall stage, including Hotel California: The Eagles Tribute, The King’s Singers, and Midsummer Night’s Dream with Gulfshore Ballet. In The Village Church, residents and guests enjoyed Holiday Pops with the Southwest Florida Symphony and an amazing Christmas concert with renowned performer Michael W. Smith. Performances of this caliber would not be possible without the support of resident sponsors and Friends of the Tribby. Through generous donor support, Connie Brown Hall was enhanced with additional technical equipment—including an impressive video wall for the stage—elevating the venue to its full potential.

Resident Creativity Shines During the two-day 2D Art Show & Sale, guests were invited to the Grand Cypress Room in The Woodlands to admire and purchase original paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, and two-dimensional works from more than 20 resident artists. The Spring Art & Craft Bazaar also offered an opportunity for residents’ creativity to shine, as they offered homemade crafts, jewelry, woodwork, pottery, and more in The Village Church. Shell Point Quilters filled the Grand Cypress Room with their amazing masterpieces and showed off their impressive skills to fellow residents and guests. And at the Holiday Craft Bazaar, more than 50 residents offered an array of handcrafted gifts and holiday décor to delighted Christmas shoppers.

Arts as Healing With the mission of making the restorative power of the arts equally and widely available to all at Shell Point, Arts as Healing coordinates concerts, classes and Artful Afternoons for Assisted Living, Connected Living and Larsen Health Center residents. This year, Shell Point’s Arts as Healing volunteers worked together to create the Arts as Healing Serenity Garden in The Woodlands. Designed as an enrichment activity for Assisted Living and Independent Living Carefree Connections residents, the Serenity Garden offers an opportunity for tending plants or just relaxing peacefully in the midst of a beautifully designed garden. 18

Beloved Tradition At the community’s annual Christmas tree lighting celebration, more than 500 residents gathered at Friendship Point on The Island to enjoy hot chocolate, festive treats, and holiday entertainment. President Martin Schappell introduced Shell Point’s most senior residents—104-year-olds Jane Hanks and Mike Klein and 103-year-old Earl Snyder—who were given the honor of lighting our community’s beautiful 18-foot tree.

The Return of the Suzy Q The Suzy Q made its triumphant return to the Southwest Florida waters through the benevolence of Shell Point residents who helped fund Hurricane Ian repairs. Once the popular pontoon was returned to Shell Point, donors were invited to enjoy an inaugural cruise and a celebratory lunch at The Crystal. The Suzy Q brings joy to so many, and once again, resident generosity made a tremendous impact.

The Power of

Partnerships Shell Point’s emphasis on national, regional, and local partnerships stems from a commitment to bringing the very best in comprehensive healthcare resources to our residents— and to being a good corporate citizen within our Southwest Florida community.

Florida Gulf Coast University A group of resident volunteers met one-onone with Florida Gulf Coast University students studying Occupational Therapy at FGCU’s Marieb College of Health & Human Services. It was a win-win: residents shared their experience and learned tips for active aging, while students practiced the essential interviewing skills they’ll need as they progress in their career path. Members of the Shell Point Players and the Writers Guild collaborated with students from Florida Gulf Coast University’s theatre program on a staged reading entitled “Seven Months Since.” To prepare, students interviewed residents about their hurricane experience, while reflecting on their own encounters with the storm. After a series of workshops, the resulting performance complemented the Seven Months Since exhibition in the Shell Point, Overlook, and Tribby Legacy galleries in Tribby Arts Center.

University of Florida Shell Point’s polypharmacy and anticoagulation therapy telehealth partnership with University of Florida College of Pharmacy continued to flourish in 2023. UF’s team of pharmacists visited the campus in August for in-person visits with their resident patients, along with a presentation about the benefits of adding a pharmacist to your healthcare team.

Heights Center Shell Point’s Arts as Healing volunteers invited young aspiring musicians from the Heights Center’s Mosaic program to attend Vega Quartet and pianist William Ransom’s Artful Afternoon concert for Shell Point’s Assisted Living and Connected Living residents. Students were treated to an up-close-and-personal opportunity to observe the quartet performing on stage and ask questions about how they each started their musical careers. Shell Point’s Illusionists took their amazing act on the road in September, to the delight of children attending the Heights Center’s afterschool program in Fort Myers.

Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Residents of The Springs volunteered for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Coastal Watch “Adopt a Mangrove” program. The mangroves they nurtured were replanted by the organization’s biologists in Hemp Key, an island in Pine Island Sound that was devastated by Hurricane Charley in 2004. Our Academy of Lifelong Learning invited SCCF to Shell Point for several wellattended presentations about the effects of Hurricane Ian on Sanibel’s wildlife and beaches.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office In November, the Legacy Foundation hosted Lee County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Specialist Tiffany Wood, who gave residents expert advice about safeguarding themselves against fraud and identity theft. LCSO was also on hand to escort resident models during the Thrift Store Fashion Show. And when the LCSO Ice Cream Response Team arrived on the scene at events like the Great Auto Race at the Tribby and concerts at Friendship Point, smiles were sure to follow.

UCLA Longevity Center Through a partnership with the UCLA Longevity Center, Shell Point offers evidence-based programs centered around the “Big 4” cornerstones of proactive and preventative brain health: healthy eating, physical activity, stress reduction, and cognitive engagement.

Supporting Our

Mission

National Day of Prayer Shell Point was a proud sponsor of the Southwest Florida Community Prayer Breakfast at JetBlue Park at Fenway South in May. Shell Point residents and members of our Executive Leadership Team were inspired by leaders from the local faith community and keynote speaker Tim Tebow. At Shell Point, The Village Church invited residents and employees to gather in multiple locations around campus to pray for our community, our nation, and our world during the National Day of Prayer.

Vacation Bible School In July, 52 children and grandchildren of Shell Point employees participated in a fun, week-long Vacation Bible School that was led by resident and staff volunteers from Shell Point and volunteers from Envision Miami, a ministry outreach of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. VBS is a beautiful expression of Shell Point’s mission: the service of God and the care of His people. It is also one of the many ways Shell Point lets staff members know that they—and their families—are important to us!

Stamp Ministry Since 1972, Shell Point’s Stamp Ministry has been dedicated to supporting two Spanish ministries. The first was a Christian radio station, HCJB, that broadcast into South American countries. Since 1997, funds have been earmarked for a publication house in Buenos Aires dedicated to writing and publishing Sunday school materials in Spanish. With the help of the ministry, these materials from Publicaciones Alianza are now being distributed in eight Latin American countries, Spain, and the United States, and are used by over 40 Protestant denominations. In 2018, the Shell Point Stamp Ministry broke the $1 million mark, and in 2023, they raised $35,000—bringing the Stamp Ministry’s fundraising grand total to $1,191,300.

Help for Haiti Shell Point also continues to support efforts in Haiti by identifying and gathering surplus goods and supplies, and coordinating donation delivery through Good Shepherd Haitian Baptist Church in Lehigh.

Expectant: Christian and Missionary Alliance Council 2023 During Alliance Council 2023, the Christian and Missionary Alliance bi-annual meeting held in spring in Spokane, Washington, Shell Point President Martin Schappell was blessed with an opportunity to express our appreciation of the C&MA coming alongside Shell Point with their prayerful and financial support after Hurricane Ian.

Volunteers in Action More than 1,000 Shell Point volunteers had a very busy year, surpassing 105,000 hours of service in 2023 as they generously shared their time and talents both within Shell Point and outside of the community. As a wonderful representation of Shell Point’s core beliefs of life, love, stewardship, and integrity, they realize there is strength in numbers and power when there is a purpose. Their contributions enrich the lives of those within Shell Point, and beyond. Volunteerism at Shell Point was celebrated with a special luncheon in April. We truly appreciate the efforts of all volunteers!

As I reflect on 2023, and I am once again humbled by how residents embrace Shell Point’s dedication to caring, serving, and satisfying the needs of others. By continuing to support the infrastructure, programs, and services that touch lives every day, the seeds of your generosity have blossomed into meaningful impact within our community. With gifts to Friends of The Tribby, Larsen Health Center, the Friendship Fund, the library and more—along with the Employee Christmas Gift Fund, scholarships, and school supplies for employees’ children and grandchildren—there are so many ways to join others in making a difference. United in a culture of benevolence, the power of our community’s tradition of philanthropy makes great things possible. Today, we celebrate the strength of our community and the exciting progress we have made this year. We also express our deep gratitude to our residents who give so generously to enhance the lives of others. Sharing the Vision through

Special Gifts

Resident involvement truly made a difference in 2023, with groups of dedicated residents sharing their own unique vision, passion, and energy to benefit others.

Back-to-School Tradition Breaks Records 2023 marked the 18th year Shell Point residents rallied to provide school supplies for Shell Point employees’ elementary school-age children and grandchildren. The committee worked with Shell Point’s purchasing department to leverage their buying power and maximize the all-time fundraising high of $21,900. A team of dedicated volunteers distributed 956 bags brimming with all the tools children need for a successful school year.

Shell Point Healthcare Auxiliary Volunteerism is a big part of Shell Point’s culture—and that spirit extends to Larsen Health Center, where our Healthcare Auxiliary hosted a Volunteer Open House. Residents were invited to explore an array of ways to help make a difference, from manning the beverage cart and helping with activities, to serving as the parking lot golf cart attendant. Each station was staffed by caring volunteers who were happy to share what makes volunteering at Larsen so satisfying. The event was a success, recruiting dozens of new volunteers and increasing the total number of Auxiliary members to 170.

With the help of very generous residents, the Shell Point Healthcare Auxiliary exceeded their Bakeless Bake Sale goal for 2023, with proceeds used to purchase a golf cart for transporting people to and from the Larsen parking lot to the entrance of the building. Volunteers were specially trained to provide this new service—and residents, guests, and families are grateful for this wonderful new addition at Larsen Health Center.

Operation Christmas Child Through the Village Church, Shell Point Residents contributed 233 shoeboxes to Operation Christmas Child. The boxes were filled with gifts and distributed to children in more than 150 countries around the world. In addition, many residents participated by building a box online or making an online contribution to Samaritans Purse in lieu of boxes.

A Christmas Blessing for Staff Members The bond shared between residents and staff members is just one of the things that makes Shell Point so special! Going “Above and Beyond,” Shell Point residents once again generously contributed to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund, with a total of approximately $550,000 shared among eligible staff members. During this year’s Employee Christmas Gift appreciation event, staff visited with residents to enjoy festive treats and express their heartfelt gratitude for this generous holiday blessing.

Island Gift Shop The impact of the Island Gift Shop’s generosity is widespread, with contributions reflected around the Shell Point campus. Since 1989, the shop has donated nearly $79,500 to support Shell Point facilities, activities and groups. Over the years, the Island Gift Shop has supported three major Shell Point fundraising initiatives, with impressive cumulative donations of $18,500 to the Employee Christmas Fund, $13,300 to the Shell Point Healthcare Auxiliary Fund, and more than $3,300 to the Library Fund. In 2023, the gift shop donated $1,400 to aid employees and support Shell Point’s Hurricane Ian recovery.

Community Thrift Store Community Thrift Store continues to give back to Southwest Florida. Through funds earned by the Thrift Store, Shell Point was a sponsor for four community walks, including the Fort Myers/Lee County Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and the American Heart Association’s December Lee County Heart Walk in Fort Myers. In total, the Community Thrift Store contributes to more than 30 charitable organizations in Lee County and donates goods that are sent to Haiti. The Thrift Store Fashion Show, featuring resident and staff models, helps promote awareness of the Thrift Store and its role in supporting our community.

Shell Point Library Fund Drive Thanks to residents’ generous spirit of giving, The Shell Point Library’s 2023 Fund Drive was a success! Much-appreciated contributions, along with the dedication of more than 50 volunteers, allows the library to continue all its initiatives. In 2023, there was consistent, active circulation of materials, most notably the growing “Golden Oldies” DVDs section. In addition to providing Shell Point’s assisted living facilities and the Larsen Health Center with new, large print books each month, the library also supports the Tribby Arts Center Library and the Genealogy Library in The Woodlands. 30

Friendship Fund The Friendship Fund was established in 1989 by concerned residents to provide benevolent care to residents who fall into financial hardship through no fault of their own and require assistance to pay their ongoing monthly maintenance fee. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for seniors to run out of money, whether due to unforeseen health circumstances or sheer longevity. Gifts to the Friendship Fund provide both benevolent care and peace of mind to residents, and is central to the mission of Shell Point.

Drive Up & Drop Off Food Drive Shell Point residents generously supported The South Fort Myers Food Pantry throughout the year with two official food drives in March and August, along with a Women’s Connections event in the spring. The three events collected hundreds of boxes of cereal, jars of peanut butter and jelly, and cans of soup, along with more than 230 pounds of miscellaneous food to share with local families in need.

Scholarship Funds Throughout the years, residents have established a variety of scholarship funds not only for Shell Point employees who dedicate their daily service to caring for, serving, and satisfying residents, but also for their children. These funds include the Charles & Florence Boxer Memorial Scholarship; the Edith C. Frazer Nursing Scholarship; the Elaine and Richard Flinn Scholarship Fund; and the Ellen Bond Manherz Nursing Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are perpetuated through generous financial support from Shell Point residents and family members. During 2023, scholarships were awarded to six employees furthering their nursing education, an employee who is studying business, and nine children of employees who are pursuing college degrees. 31

Friends of the Tribby Throughout Shell Point’s history, the fine and performing arts have been supported by generous residents through the Friends of the Arts program. In Fall 2023, the program was renamed Friends of The Tribby—the home of arts at Shell Point. Revenue from concerts and programs throughout the season only partially funds all the activity at Tribby Arts Center. Resident generosity helps support music, education, lectures, arts events, gallery exhibitions, and so much more! Generous individuals, couples, and group sponsors—including Guys Who Give and The Rockin’ Sisters—allow us to purchase much-needed equipment and bring world-acclaimed artists to our community for everyone to experience and enjoy. FineMark National Bank & Trust has been a sponsor of our Fine & Performing Arts Series for many years, and their generous support has truly made an impact at Shell Point.

Friends of The Tribby United Way Campaign Residents once again responded with great generosity to the United Way Campaign at Shell Point. Sponsored by the Residents’ Council, the campaign raised $86,725 that will support the 90 agencies and more than 260 programs that serve our community’s children, veterans, seniors, and families.

Shell Point Legacy Society The quiet benevolence of a legacy gift to Shell Point comes from those who have generously remembered Shell Point in their estate plans to enhance the programs and services for residents for generations to come. Legacy Society members are invited to a special holiday concert in thanks of their generosity to Shell Point. Members of the Shell Point Legacy Society are inspired by the organization’s impact on the lives of everyone it touches today, and in the future.
