One Body; Many Parts By Rachel Zellers, Director of Long Term Care
D
uring the month of May, I’d like to turn our attention to the staff who work at Pavilion. When I think about the staff, I think of the verse in 1 Corinthians 12:12: Just as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body. Each and every employee at the Pavilion is an essential part of the body that we call the “Pavilion staff.” Each and every employee has a crucial role to play as our “body” serves the residents, their families and each other. There is no one employee or department that is more important than another. If we “amputated” the housekeepers, our building would soon become filthy. If we “broke” the CNAs, no one would be able to assist the residents get bathed, dressed and groomed. If the nurses had a “stroke,” the residents would not receive their medical care. If dietary came down with the “flu,” our residents wouldn’t receive
meals. If maintenance developed “cancer,” our building would become unusable over time. And if activities had a “heart attack,” our residents would be left without anything to occupy their time and lift their spirits. So how do we keep our “body” healthy? A simple, sincere thank you goes a long way toward healing a “heart attack.” Speaking to each other respectfully helps prevent “the cancer of resentment” from developing. Offering assistance helps combat the “flu” that can result from being over-stressed. An appreciation event like the one held on March 30 can help strengthen relationships, preventing them from “breaking” or being “amputated.” And the events and treats planned for National Nursing Care Week offer an opportunity to acknowledge all the members of the body that is Shell Point staff. Please join me in thanking the Pavilion staff for their dedicated service during this time set aside to recognize them.

New Life By Bonnie Palmquist, Assistant Chaplain
o you remember springtime up north? Remember planting bulbs and seeds under the ground, covering them carefully with dirt, waiting eagerly for those first green shoots to show? Before you knew it, there were beautiful, colorful flowers, where only a short while ago there had been nothing but dirt! The purpose of burying seeds and bulbs is not to kill them, but to give them new life. They will grow into the same beautiful plants, but new and fresh. Jesus had an interesting comment on what would happen to those seeds that weren’t buried. In John 12:24-25, He says, “Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is, destroys
that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal.” (The Message) Jesus was saying that if we insist on holding onto our own self-centered thoughts, plans and actions, we will gradually wither away in our spirits. What are some of the temptations of self-centeredness in our older years? Perhaps self-pity, looking back on the “good old days,” a sense of entitlement, or even resentment or dissatisfaction that we are still here! In contrast, God’s plan for us is to continually grow us to be what He created us to be; each one different, and beautiful in our own way. To let that happen, we need to “bury” our self-centeredness and trust God, even in our older years. You’ve heard the old saying, “Bloom where you’re planted.” It’s amazing how alive we feel when we die to our self-centeredness and come alive to God’s life and purpose for us!

National Volunteer Week In April, Shell Point celebrated National Volunteer Week. The Pavilion team took the opportunity to host an appreciation event to thank the Larsen Pavilion Auxiliary volunteers for their service.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. ~Leo Buscaglia
