ecember 17 was my one-year anniversary with Shell Point and the Larsen Pavilion. I can’t believe how quickly it passed! It seems like just yesterday I was getting myself lost trying to find the Schilling Dining Room or figuring out who lived and worked on which floor. For me, it was an exciting year as well as a humbling year. I have been welcomed so graciously by residents, staff, volunteers and visitors that I am truly overflowing with gratitude. I have been offered so much encouragement that I am humbled. And I’ve had the support to implement changes which has energized me. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our recent deficiency-free surveys! I am blessed to be part of the team of staff and volunteers who worked together throughout the year to assure that the care and

services we provide to Pavilion residents are exceptional – as noted by the surveyors. The Pavilion was providing great care and services when I arrived on the scene. But as a pair of “fresh eyes,” there were changes that I felt would improve the care we provide. Some of those changes included implementing a process improvement plan, converting some semi-private rooms into private rooms and revision of some policies, just to name a few. I look forward to 2020. My brain is already going into overdrive with plans to continue on the path of quality improvement with a particular focus on residents with cognitive impairment. I look forward to partnering with many of you on upcoming initiatives – say stay tuned for more information to come. In the meantime, Happy New Year!

Sight Unseen

By Rebecca Reynolds, Assistant Chaplain

D

o you remember how the annual science fair packed the school gymnasium every spring? Kids

would bring in all kinds of experiments to search for answers. Would green plants grow better under yellow or purple lights? Do tiny ants prefer sweet or salty water? As students, we were trying to understand and make sense of the world around us. The projects were teaching us that for something to be true, it had to pass the test of the eyes; in other words, “seeing is believing.” This approach was meant to

guarantee believable results in the sciences, and it has led to remarkable discoveries that benefit us every day. But, when I was growing up, I thought the same method would be the best way to “do life.” I only wanted to make decisions and plans based on definite, “seeable” facts. I wanted to understand everything and believe I was the one in control. Life turned out to be much more complicated, because my experiences did not match my expectations. I eventually had to admit there had to be “more than meets the eye.” The author Oswald Chambers

explains this change in outlook. He shares that we have all been created to reach out beyond our own grasp, and it is God who is drawing us toward Him. He is yearning to give us a new perspective and deliver us into a new life. Our own grasp is limited to what we can see immediately before us. He did not create us to look to our own understanding, but to Him. God promises to show us how to truly see when we begin to explore His inspired Word (John 16:13). An open heart and opened eyes are all He asks of us.

God promises to show us how to truly see when we begin to explore His inspired Word -John 16:13

HAPPYNew Year! By Tacey Larimer-Tettaton, Pavilion Activities Supervisor

H

ere’s to the passing of another holiday season, bringing the opportunity to reflect on much that transpired this past year and during holidays past. You remembered and made new memories. You celebrated Christmas with anticipa-

tion for the New Year and new days ahead. Most of all, you have been and continue to be blessed with birthday milestones. Nothing shown more brightly than the faces of those who attended the Pavilion’s Tree Lighting Ceremony

where several centenarians had the honor of being recognized. Many happy regards to each person who participated! The Pavilion Activities department is looking forward to a fantastic 2020 with you. Happy New Year!
