Icebreaker Exercise: Assignment 1

In this assignment we have to reinterpret into Tectonic Form one of the Kazimir Malevich’s (b.1879,d.1935) paints called “Suprematist Composition 2 When I first time saw this painting, I was impressed by the vibrant colors. But the structures of this paint made me confused. The rectangles, triangles, trapezoids are disorderly laid on the picture, which has no logical meaning.

•  The first step was to decide which part to choose. I decided to choose the most intricate design. The part highlighted in red.

When I constructed the final piece I noticed that all of the pieces held a certain symmetry to one another. The all were in a stair case shape. Each one was 2cm higher then its predecessor. In the original piece there is no net between the pieces. I decided to put it in for aesthetic purposes. I reminds me of a roof of a house.

•  In the first part of the project the shapes were too abstract and it was hard to discern in it any real world use. When I approached the second assignment I decided to give it some real world use. The first step was to decide what should I take way keep or redesign.

Assignment 2 •  As stated previously I decided to add some real world application to this. Instead of having abstract shapes like that together had absolutely no logical patter I decided to go with something that was recognizable by anyone. I kept the original walls and shape and designed a roof and added a triangle shape, since there were no triangles to begin with. I also added a cube at the top left. To keep the balance in the structure.

Blind contour drawing The blind contour drawing is about the Kyoto Train Station in Tokyo. The work forces us to emphasis the connection between our muscles and memories. I need to focus on the train station image so that I can remember the structure and shapes. And when I was drawing it, I need to use the ability of special memory.

Experiential

Experiential •  For this week we had to build a three definitional model relating to the adjective. The spherical design of small circles expanding into bigger ones represents our walk through life. When we are born we don’t know anything and as we grow older we see more and learn more from the ever expanding world. The reason I chose circles for this design is because each circle represents our world, Earth, expanding as we get older.

Story

•  The model is named experiential which is definitely the reflection of my life. I was born in ShenZhen. And now I am here in San Francisco, an international culture diversity city. After I came here, I experiences more than I expect and my mind is going to be broader.

Experiential •  For the second part of our project we had to improve on or three dimensional rendering of our adjective. After looking over my previous design I noticed that there was something missing in it. In my previous design I noticed a flaw. Each circle represents our ever expanding world, they must be tied together, because all our experiences are tied together. To correct this I added many spines to all the circles to connect them together. Because all of our experiences are tied together by people and situations that’s why there is not just one spine, but 7.

Conclusion I find this class interesting and challengeable. There are bunch of vocabularies that I did not know before. And the models and projects push me up, it forces me to work hard. I would like to overcome this difficulties and I am looking forward to absorbing more experiences from this class.
