Strong Community Attracts and Keeps Residents in Milwaukee !::BY ERIN BERGE
inter in Milwaukee: The temperature might rise to only 14 degrees Fahrenheit with a low of minus three, and every car on the block has a foot of snow covering the windows. The common question we ask ourselves every winter in Milwaukee is: Why do we choose to live here? A strong community, affordable living and an independent culture not only attract newcomers to Milwaukee but encourage families that have stayed for generations. According to Mary Beth Gaspar-Waite, broker and owner of Cornerstone Realtors, the community support is unique enough that new homeowners from out of town are shocked when neighbors bring over a casserole after they move in. “When people move into town, they find Milwaukee friendly and welcoming. People are more successful if they have strong friends and feel at home. In turn, it makes Milwaukee more attractive,” says Gaspar-Waite. “It starts with the most basic thing—a community needs to take care of each other. That’s why we’re such a great place to live.” The meaning of community in Milwaukee has expanded over the years. For LGBTQ residents, Milwaukee has progressed in inclusivity, according to Jason Rae, president and CEO of the LGBT Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve been working to create not only a more welcoming, inclusive Wisconsin, but a more welcoming, inclusive Milwaukee and all communities that we serve,” he says. While there is still more work to do, Milwaukee’s policies, government leaders and corporations have progressed since the LGBT Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce launched in 2012. Working with about 700 businesses throughout the state, the LGBT Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce works on supporting LGBTQ employees with business resources, looking at policies and procedures within companies. “They’re really putting themselves out there, saying inclusivity matters and being welcoming to the LGBTQ community is a priority,” Rae continues.

The comptroller is really responsible for all the monitoring and the oversight of the city—sort of a double check, if you will. They are responsible for monitoring all federal and state grants that the city gets. We do all the accounting and the financial statements, and the financial statements are about 160 pages long, so that’s a pretty big feat that is completed every single year. Probably something the city employees love is that we also do the payroll for everybody in the city, and we run the public debt program, so we issue all the bonds for the city. We do the revenue estimates, and we have fiscal analysis. We do independent analysis of the mayor’s projects when they have tax incremental financing districts that are created, and last but not least, we also run the inter-

WARNING: President Trump’s ignorant lies about the coronavirus can be hazardous to the health of Americans and the entire U.S. economy. From the moment Trump took office, the greatest danger Americans faced was that, one day, their incompetent, dishonest presi" dent would be confronted with a real global crisis he couldn’t lie his way out of. The rapid spread of the coronavirus is just such an unde" niable, real world crisis. We know the public health crisis is real because Trump is denying it and minimizing the threat instead of exaggerating it. Trump’s racist political appeal has always intentionally inflamed irrational fears of white Americans about imaginary dangers from brown-skinned rapists and murderers crossing our southern border and Muslim terrorists streaming into our country (sometimes cleverly sneaking into Mexico and disguising themselves as Latinos fleeing poverty and gang violence to join bloodthirsty caravans secretly plotting to slaughter innocent Americans.) Now with a deadly coronavirus pandemic re" ally threatening American lives and livelihoods, Trump contradicts warnings of government health experts about the severe, national conse" quences looming. Trump, himself, increased the risks by dismantling the pandemic preparedness programs former President Barack Obama put in place after the Ebola crisis and slashing fund" ing for the Centers for Disease Control and Pre" vention, driving scientific research and medical expertise out of the government.
More Dishonesty
The worst drop during the worst week for the stock market since the Great Recession began in October 2008 occurred the day after Trump’s televised press conference last week in which the president dishonestly suggested there were only 15 Americans mildly affected by the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, who were recovering, and the disease could soon disap" pear entirely from the U.S. “When you have 15 people—and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down close to zero—that’s a pretty good job we’ve done,” Trump boasted. The real reason so few cases were known was that only 445 Americans had been tested at that point. South Korea tested 66,652 peo" ple and found 1,766 confirmed cases. Only
about a dozen state and local health clinics in the U.S. received working test kits from the federal government. Researchers now believe the coronavirus went undetected for at least six weeks in Washington State before result" ing in the first six American fatalities over the weekend and on Monday, March 2, in a Kirk" land, Wash., nursing center. Domestic testing now will rapidly increase with the number of infections and fatalities expected to rise dra" matically, not disappear. Trump continues to suggest the coronavirus is no worse than the common flu, even though the known fatalities of those infected worldwide indicate it is 20 times more deadly. Trump also falsely claimed in his press conference the U.S. was rapidly developing a vaccine that would soon be available. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, almost immediately took the micro" phone to correct the president. He said the vac" cine would take about a year and half to develop and wouldn’t apply to the current epidemic.
Miracles in April
Trump tells gullible supporters at his hate ral" lies around the country the coronavirus will mi" raculously disappear in April when the weather gets warmer. President Xi Jinping of China, where nearly 3,000 people have died from the coronavirus, told him so. Xi “feels very con" fident,” according to Trump, that “during the month of April, the heat, generally speaking, kills this kind of virus.” No one knows why Trump usually believes anything communist dictators like Xi or Russia’s President Vladi" mir Putin tell him, but health authorities are more dubious. They note the coronavirus is still spreading in Singapore where temperatures cur" rently are in the 90s. Trump still believes in miracles, but he’s starting to hedge his bets. Meeting with Af" rican American leaders late last week, his promise began to evaporate: “It’s going to dis" appear. One day—it’s like a miracle—it will disappear from our shores. You know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody re" ally knows.” Trump sure doesn’t. Seriously, does that sound like a president who has any idea what to do to protect the country during a pandemic that not only threatens American lives, but could shut down factories around the world, cutting off supply chains and de" stroying international commerce? Trump’s first concern, as usual, is for himself. He’s enraged federal health officials who have released accurate information about the public health threat that could damage his re-election prospects by ending the growing economy he inherited from Obama. Trump’s ability to control public panic when people begin dying in communities will depend upon whether Americans can trust their presi" dent to tell them the truth about what is hap" pening. Unfortunately, after Trump’s blizzard of more than 16,000 documented lies in the first three years of his presidency and his insistence on “happy talk” from federal officials about the pandemic, most Americans already know they can’t believe anything Trump says. !"##$%&'(&')*$+*$,-$.+,$))/0"#/n SHEPHERD EXPRESS

ustin can leave his body. Well, not literally, but in a mind-separatesfrom-body sense. Unless you’ve experienced the classic “out-of-body experience” sometimes associated with near-death episodes, sensory deprivation or drug-induced hallucinogenic states, it’s likely your mind and physiology feel inseparable. Not for Austin. He endures frequent episodes of feeling mentally detached from his physical self, as well as the equally unsettling perception that events happening around him are unreal. This undermines his own sense of being real, which instigates anxiety, panic attacks and fears of going crazy. “When most people say ‘I’ or ‘me,’ they’re speaking from a solid sense of who they are. I don’t feel that. It’s like I’m speaking for someone who isn’t quite all me,” he struggled to explain.
!""#$%&'(%)"*#+
Most of us have brief interludes when we feel a bit unreal, as if one is a remote observer dispassionately watching oneself think, feel and act. There is evidence this predilection has increased during the digital age. The mind is bombarded with sensory overload and, to protect itself, mentally checks out at times. However, when this mindset becomes chronic, there’s cause for concern.
::BY PHILIP CHARD
Mental health types call it “depersonalization disorder.” While you may not have heard of it, this condition is just as common as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, affecting roughly two percent of the population. Due to a lack of awareness among professionals, not just lay people, depersonalization disorder is frequently misunderstood. Tell someone you suffer from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and they’ll probably possess at least a rudimentary understanding of these conditions. Do the same with depersonalization disorder, and blank stares are the most likely response. As such, folks like Austin struggle to be understood and often find empathy in short supply. “The worst of it is feeling unreal. Not just that I’m unreal, but that everything is, even existence itself,” Austin related. Another client of mine with this mental malady speculated we may all be part of a highly sophisticated game simulation created by a much advanced, but not divine, intelligence. The movie The Matrix is based on this theme. Far-fetched or not, it can feel that way. What causes it? Most studies suggest childhood trauma as the most likely culprit, while others include chronically high anxiety or residual flashbacks from so-called bad trips (think LSD, ecstasy and the like). When traumatized as a child, one’s mind may split into a “victim self” and an “observer self” to defend itself against extreme fear and emotional suffering. To blunt these impacts, the observer
self assumes a disengaged mental posture (“not me”). In the spiritual realm, one client with this condition framed it within her Buddhist orientation, asserting that her soul failed to fully reincarnate in her body. Whatever the cause, treating depersonalization disorder remains challenging. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has helped some, but its benefits appear limited. Medications only seem to address the symptoms (anxiety, depression) rather than the experience of depersonalization itself. Some clinicians recommend mindfulness, but for certain individuals, this makes matters worse. Somatic therapies that strive to anchor conscious awareness within the body (yoga, tai chi, massage therapy, forest bathing, etc.) show promise for some, including Austin. One of my colleagues proposes that, in certain folks, depersonalization disorder represents a unique, if disturbing, form of consciousness that sees through the fog of mental representations we use to interpret reality. Physicists and cognitive psychologists assert that we don’t experience so-called reality directly, but by conjuring a mental schematic of what’s “out there.” As scholar Alfred Korzybski asserted, “The map is not the territory.” So, maybe some who experience depersonalization are actually seeing through this illusory map, creating the sense of “unreality” they often report. Feeling depersonalized places one on the murky dividing line between what we consider real and what we regard as illusory. People like Austin remind us of how little we understand about the true nature of consciousness, self and the embodied mind. For more, visit philipchard.com.

ong before the current cannabis resurgence, Josh Thornton had supported medical cannabis and was passionate about the plant and its potential to become a viable industry. After full cannabis legalization unfolded in some West Coast states and in neighboring states including Illinois, Thornton became intrigued by how cannabis industries experienced a “boom” or “green rush.” Thornton had also noticed how Wisconsin’s industrial hemp industry took root, specifically with cannabidiol (CBD). He saw a unique opportunity to combine his passion for the plant with his background and expertise in graphic design, e-commerce and the printing industry. Thus, Creative Cannamarketing was born this past October. Through Creative Cannamarketing, Thornton offers full creative and print services that cater specifically to businesses in the cannabis industry. He provides agency-level creative services like packaging, logo design and trade show marketing materials to help cannabis entrepreneurs develop a brand. He has partnerships with a local printer to offer full-service conventional, digital and large format printing. By offering these services under one roof, as opposed to businesses having to pay separately for a la carte marketing and printing services, Thornton feels small cannabis entrepreneurs will get a better bang for their buck. “The reality out there is that a lot of these hemp businesses are young, small upstart businesses that don’t have access to a Downtown design agency,” Thornton says. “I offer these services all under one roof.” Because he offers large format digital printing, which is more cost effective, companies can do smaller product runs. Rather than investing in 10,000 boxes, Thornton can print smaller quantities of 50 or 1,000. He sources environmentally sound packaging; his own business cards are printed on 110# Hemp Heritage Card Stock. He also sources hemp plastic tubes for packaging. Thornton also offers direct mail service. “I try to steer people away from social media,” he says. “The under-40 crowd prides themselves on social media, having a presence and being influencers, but this is really not where they should be focusing their marketing efforts and marketing dollars.” He adds that while social media may be an effective networking tool, it’s not an effective marketing strategy, particularly for the cannabis industry. “Social media sites discriminate against cannabis businesses, whether businesses have the word ‘cannabis’ in the name, or ‘CBD’ or ‘hemp.’ As soon as social media companies catch those words, they’re shutting down pages.” He notes that consumers make purchasing decisions based on quality packaging as well as a good product. Thornton’s direct mail services include high-end postcards, interactive print, pop-ups and high-end sales boxes. Because laws and regulation in the cannabis industry are rapidly changing on municipal and state levels, Thornton keeps abreast of legal packaging verbiage. “I’m not providing any legal advice, but I have a contact to help with legal issues. I look at laws and regulations regarding packaging and keep on top of those laws for clients. All of these laws and regulations are ongoing and changing. Even city by city, there are different laws and regulations. For printed boxes, laws change, and now they have to add some type of warning, so we reach out and tell them to change their packaging. I’d hate for somebody to get into trouble because they’re missing a disclaimer.” Thornton participated in the February Shepherd Express-sponsored Cannabis Expo, and he felt camaraderie among other businesses and attendees. “Wisconsin’s cannabis community is a tight-knit family. I want us to grow. Wisconsin has a rich history in hemp that’s been forced underground for the past 75 years, but it is now emerging. People are embracing that, and I’m eager to see where the cannabis businesses will be in the future, even by the end of this summer. It’s progressing very quickly, and I’m proud to be a part of everything going on in the state.” For more information, visit creativecannamarketing.com. Luna’s Mexican Restaurant
Luna’s Mexican Restaurant a Hidden Gem in St. Francis
but a few minutes had passed before our server welcomed us with a sunny smile and a basket full of delightfully crisp tortilla chips with tasty salsa. Yes, most Mexican restaurants make fresh chips, but these were remarkable as they were delicate, lightly seasoned and so fresh that they were obviously still warm from the fryer. They’re so good, in fact, it’d almost be worth a trip to Luna’s just for the chips. Luna’s offers all of the Mexican dishes you’d expect to see: tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, tostadas, chimichangas and burritos. But, like the excellent chips, it’s the little details that sets them apart. Luna’s isn’t trying to challenge their diners with unexpected gourmet creations. Instead, they’re successfully putting out good, ::BY SUSAN HARPT GRIMES solid Mexican comfort food, which often is just what diners are looking for. Sunday Brunch Polish Style Polonez (4016 S. Packard Ave.) may be the area’s only remaining restaurant specializing in Polish fare. Even at Sunday brunch, Polonez occupies a unique place. Polish sausage and dill pickle soup are among the items offered on the buffet line. Morning staples such as moderately crisp bacon shares space with a sweet-and-sour ethnic specialty, bigos (hunter’s stew). All that protein can be complemented by potatoes in the form hash browns, small pancakes made with a smooth batter containing a hint of onion plus German and Polish salads. Macaroni and tropical fruit salads join deviled eggs for colder delectables. The buffet ends sweetly with pierogis filled with slightly sugary cheese, miniature banana crepes and a variety of desserts; a recent visit found a carrot cake of nearly red velvet darkness and Polish cheesecake as spongy as it is tasty. The buffet comes with entertainment, such as the dulcet tones and colorful folkloric garb of a strolling accordionist who looked pleased to pose for pictures with parties celebrating birthdays and other special occasions. The all-youcan-eat buffet is $17.50 for adults and $8.75 for children under 12. Sunday brunch is served 11 Sunday Brunch at Polonez a.m.-2 p.m.

he “eat local” movement has gotten a boost over the past couple of decades through the “Community Supported Agriculture” (CSA) model, in which consumers buy a share of a farm’s harvest each growing season and get direct access to their fresh, locally grown produce. Since 2002, the Local Farmer Open House has fostered that connection between farmers and consumers while encouraging ecologically sound farming practices. The 18th annual Local Farmer Open House, hosted by Friends of Real Food and the Urban Ecology Center, takes place on Saturday, March 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Urban Ecology Center’s Riverside Park location (1500 E. Park Place). Those attending this free event will be able to talk with farmers about their
produce, growing methods, CSA subscription options and also enjoy some new activities. “This year, besides the opportunity to meet local farmers and learn how to buy directly from them, there will be more options for omnivores with a meat CSA [from Marr’s Valley View Farms] and community supported fisheries [from Sitka Salmon Shares],” says Anne Steinberg, a member of Friends of Real Food, who began helping with the Local Farmer Open House in 2006. Returning farmers include those from Full Harvest Farm, Cream City Farms, Springdale Farm, LotFotL Community Farm, Three Sisters Community Farm and Wellspring. Simple Café will also participate in the event this year to sell lunch, and their chef will be doing a cooking demo. “And, last but not least, we’ve added special programming just for children,” adds Steinberg. “They can explore how plants grow and what it takes to grow your very own vegetables. Kids will play farm-themed games, explore decomposers and pollinators and build their own seedling to take home and start their own gardens.” Workshops include a CSA basics workshop, covering how CSAs work and how to select the farm subscription that’s right for you; a cooking demo with Simple Café, making use of farm-fresh ingredients; and Cooking From Your CSA Box, on how you can use the contents of your CSA box to prepare quick, healthy meals with recipes and tips. There will also be an orientation area available to attendees, where people can ask questions about CSAs, a photo booth and door prizes (those who sign up for a CSA subscription during the open house will be entered to win a door prize gift basket). t’s all about the volunteers. The Irish Cultural and Heritage Center (2133 W. Wisconsin Ave.) occupies a large historic building whose centerpiece, the former sanctuary of the Grand Avenue Congregational Church, is now a concert hall. Operating and maintaining the structure, built in 1886, is a massive undertaking sustained by the community it serves. Volunteers have helped fix leaking roofs and broken boilers and gradually remodel the old church into a contemporary concert hall. Building manager Tim O’Sullivan, the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center’s (ICHC) only paid employee, has supervised recent projects such as painting and plastering the Hallamor (concert hall) and enlarging its wooden stage, fronted with panels taken from old pews. A bar in the corner was also constructed from old pews, allowing concert-goers to imbibe while enjoying the music. As well as much of the physical labor, the work of managing and promoting the ICHC’s concert series and other cultural events is done by volunteers. “It’s definitely a labor of love,” says Rory Modlinski, ICHC’s marketing and entertainment director. Modlinski and publicist Kathleen Schultz are showing me around the rehabbed Hallamor. The former church’s congregants from a century ago might be shocked by the presence of a bar, yet the addition is made from the same dark wood that furnished their sanctuary and its many remaining pews, still used for seating. high-ceilinged hall flanked by three balconies and one of the most massive pipe organs in Wisconsin. “We have tried to keep the room as original as we can but make it a working house,” Modlinski explains. Progressive history clings to the site. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in the sanctuary of the Grand Avenue church. Long before the grand building on Wisconsin Avenue was erected, the congregation, worshipping at another site, was a Milwaukee station on the Underground Railroad. Before the Civil War, parish activities included hiding escaped slaves on their way to freedom in Canada. However, by the 1990s, the congregation had dwindled and most of the building was empty.

Spurred by the Shamrock Club and other Milwaukee Irish activists, the ICHC assumed ownership of the building (already on National Register of Historical Places) in 1996. The concert series began the following year and has included shows by Cherish the Ladies, Gaelic Storm and many others. Some of
the acts are familiar to Milwaukee audiences from previous concerts at Irish Fest, but the ICHC has also been willing to take chances on rising stars in Eire than remain unknown in North America. This spring, the ICHC is launching a parallel series dedicated to an American music with Celtic roots: bluegrass. First up will be a Minneapolis bluegrass band, The High 48s, on Sunday, April 5. In addition to the Hallomar, the ICHC houses smaller performance halls, rehearsal spaces for local performing groups, a lending library (open noon-4 p.m. on first and third Mondays each month), a genealogical archive and rooms for meetings by numerous community organizations. In addition to the newly installed bar in the Hallomar, alcohol is also served at Quinlan’s Pub located elsewhere in the building. The ICHC is part of the network that has made Milwaukee a worldwide mecca of Celtic culture through Irish Fest. Schultz credits Ed Ward, one of the founders of Irish Fest, who passed away last year. “He was an amazing person,” she recalls. Although he never served on the ICHC board of directors, he was always ready with advice and willing to help. “He had the vision, and nothing would stop him,” Schultz recalls. “‘We’re going to die someday,’ he said. ‘We have to get young people involved.’ That’s what he did, and that’s why we’ve been so successful.” Upcoming concerts at the ICHC include Socks in the Frying Pan, a traditional Irish band, on Saturday, March 7, and Dublin singer Aoife Scott on Saturday, April 4. For tickets and more information, call 414-219-0010 or visit ichc.net.

Wild Space Dances About Books
B
::BY JOHN SCHNEIDER
oswell Book Company’s bookstore on Downer Avenue was alive with customers on a Sunday afternoon. I’d stopped in to see the Wild Space Dance Company’s rehearsal of Off the Page, choreographer Debra Loewen’s new site-specific dance work about books and reading. She’s staging it throughout the store. Customers quietly wandered, focusing on books and their own thoughts and lives, while dancers practiced synchronized moves along an aisle in the non-fiction section, as if searching for the right answers there. In the mystery book section, Loewen sat on the carpeted floor in a circle of dancers. She’d repositioned the reading area—sofa, chairs and table—to create a modest dance floor. The store’s patrons took it in stride, using the furniture for reading, accepting the artists’ presence. Loewen was working with some of the index cards that the bookstore fastens to shelves beneath many of the books. They’re filled with handwritten thoughts about that book’s content and value. Fragments of these “recommendations,” as Loewen terms them, will introduce some dances. Others will be prefaced by brief excerpts from books, read aloud by Mauriah Kraker and Flora Coker, or spoken by dancers from memory. “My feeling is that dance should tell the story,” Loewen tells me as we tour the store. “One of my favorite books is St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves. It’s a fabulous short story by Karen Russell. Imagine eight girl dancers out here, and I say, ‘this is a story about a pack of girls raised by wolves and taken by the warden to live in a convent with the nuns.’ That’s your frame of reference: look at this dance thinking about girls raised by wolves.” Off the Page will begin with the entire audience gathered for a substantial, multistoried performance in the mystery section, after which the audience will divide into five viewing groups. Each group will be taken to a discreet area of the bookstore. Five entirely different short performances of identical length will be repeated five times, as each audience group moves from one section to the next. The sections are fiction, cooking, magazines, children’s books and an aisle of non-fiction and special interest books. Loewen describes the choreography as “my usual fragmentation and juxtaposition.” Audience members will, of course, make their own connections between genres, specific titles, spoken text and movement. In the fiction section, dancers Elisabeth O’Keefe Roskopf and Tori Isaac incorporate memorized texts from “fiction that’s particular to their interests,” Loewen says, including work by local authors Martha Bergland and Susan Firer. In the cooking section, Emily Bolwerk dances and speaks a foodless cooking demonstration that Loewen, in a tantalizing voice, calls “strange.” In the magazine section, Jimmi Weyneth and Molly Kiefer each read the same magazine. “They’re absolutely in unison in how they look at it, how they read it, how they flip the pages. It’s a kind of meditation,” Loewen says. In the non-fiction aisle, Brea Graber, Danielle Lohuis and Lindsey Ruenger appear and disappear down aisles, pulling books and perusing appendices. “It’s the most abstract section,” Loewen confirms. The children’s section has tall windows, the better to watch Jenni Reinke performing outdoors. Composer Warren Enström is toying with music boxes and books that make animal sounds for accompaniment. The entire audience will regroup in the mystery section for the show’s finale. It begins as sheer, book-driven dance virtuosity and ends in “a quiet tableau of the way people act in a bookstore,” Loewen says. “It’s a little like coming to Summerfest. When people come in, nobody knows at first where they want to go. It’s overstimulating.”

In his solo show and first exhibition in Wisconsin, Gannon Crutcher (“Queens, Kings and Regal Beings”) utilizes the delicate medium of watercolor with acrylic to broadcast imagery of strength, dignity and fashion couture through Mikinsi-inspired portraits. With faces referencing African ceremonial masks and sculptures, this collection of majestic, iconographic portraits brings traditional African spirits into the physical world, which Crutcher deems his “spiritual portraits.” Kierston Ghaznavi, in her solo exhibition (“Without a Stitch”), catapults her signature pinned paper dolls to life-size proportions. Commanding even more attention through scale, these beautifully illustrated, contoured and playfully interactive body-con dolls allow viewers to be voyeurs into their intimate lives as they depict an array of everyday rituals—from cheeky scenes of brushing teeth in undies to darker moments of coping with depression, anxiety and loneliness—in effort to normalize and humanize the people they reflect. Tuesday, March 10, 3:15-4:45 p.m. Greenhill Center of the Arts, Ceramics Area Room 1037 800 W. Main St., Whitewater
UW-Whitewater’s Department of Art and Design brings Cruz Enrique España, an internationally acclaimed folk artist from Guatemala, to campus, where he will give a free lecture (open to the public). España began working in his father’s ceramic factory as a child, and though the expectation was that he’d someday take over the business, he dreamt of being an artist in his own right. Eventually, España opened his own factory and began to make unique ceramic sculptures. His reputation spread, and soon he was invited to participate in folk art exhibitions in Guatemala, as well as abroad. Over the decades, he’s continued traveling, exhibiting and teaching as a highly prolific artist. For more information, visit whitewaterchamber.com. M A R C H 5 , 2 0 2 0 | 23

[ FILM CLIPS ] Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band R Inspired by Robbie Robertson’s 2017 best-selling memoir, Testimony, this documentary seeks to illuminate what went very right, before going very wrong, with The Band, a seminal rock group from the ’60s and beyond. Director Daniel Roher uses photographs, archival footage and interviews, both past and present, to share Robertson’s version of events, now largely undisputed as only two Band members survive. Rock fans, as well as music history buffs, will find the story uplifting, familiar and melancholy upon learning that The Band was ultimately divided by drug use and personality conflicts. (L.M.)

!!The Way Back R A high school basketball phenom, Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) inexplicably walked away from the game after securing a basketball college scholarship. Having thrown his future away, the now 40-something, divorced alcoholic begins the day drinking beer in the shower, the can precariously balanced on the soap dish. Jack spends off hours in a lowlife bar and spiraling downward. When asked to coach his high school basketball team, Jack is surprised to find himself accepting the difficult task of fixing a broken group of players. Addressing these malfunctions sends Jack into a drinking funk but also inspires him to get help. In some ways, it’s an autobiographical film for Affleck, who has experience with rehab. (L.M.)

‘The Invisible Man’
Shaping up as one of Pixar’s less original offerings, this animated movie nevertheless features likable characters. Tom Holland and Chris Pratt lend their voices to elf brothers whose father died when they were young. As teens—rapidly growing apart—the discovery of dad’s magical staff unites them because, with the right spell, it can bring him back for 24 hours. Unfamiliar with magic long ago discarded in favor of video games and other technology, the boys only partially bring back their dad. With one day to fix the spell before he is gone forever, they embark on a road trip replete with the usual tropes and obstacles. Julia Louis-Dreyfus vocalizes their mom, while Octavia Spencer intones a strange woman possessing knowledge that can help them complete their quest. (Lisa Miller)
“One Missed Call Trilogy” (ARROW VIDEO)
Ever want to smash your phone? In Japanese director Takashi Miike’s One Missed Call (2003), even cancelling your service can’t stop the horror. A baroque ringtone announces calls from their own numbers from the day after tomorrow. The message? You will die. One Missed Call is a 21st-century parable on the viral properties of evil and the ripple effect when even one person is abused. The sequels on this Blu-ray creatively advance the plot.
Manon (ARROW ACADEMY)
Writer-director Henri-Georges Clouzot is best-known for thrillers (Wages of Fear). With Manon (1949), he followed two doomed lovers through the rubble of postwar Europe. He’s a French resistance fighter who rescues a woman (Manon) from spiteful villagers who accuse her of fraternizing with the German invaders. She’s crafty enough for two. Clouzot’s orchestration of drama, comedy and romance is much like Hollywood of that era, except that in 1949, no Hollywood studio could have released a film this explicit.
Is Anybody Listening? (INDIEPIX FILMS)
Paula J. Caplan’s documentary began with her father, who commanded an artillery unit at the Battle of the Bulge. The Harvard psychology professor sadly realized she never understood her father’s wartime experience and set out to collect the stories of veterans. According to her statistics, only 7% of Americans are veterans (only 1% saw combat). The gap between civilian and military life has widened since her father’s day; homecoming for recent veterans is hard.
“CMA Awards Live Greatest Moments: 2008-2015” (TIME LIFE)
Nashville is melancholic judging by many numbers collected on this Blu-ray. The lights dim for sensitive balladeering and midtempo numbers as the singers go on about love lost and dreams deferred. Then again, that was always a big part of country music! Zac Brown gives one of the rootsier performances among the pop-ready tunes collected from eight years of the CMA Awards. Highlights include Sheryl Crow, Miranda Lambert and Loretta Lynn on “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” —David Luhrssen SHEPHERD EXPRESS

Blues Before Sunrise 2: Interviews From the Chicago Scene

!
(UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS PRESS), BY STEVE CUSHING For 40 years as host of the syndicated “Blues Before Sunrise” radio program, Steve Cushing has interviewed Chicago’s blues performers. He probably interviewed every musician of note from the scene—and several more than twice. Blues Before Sunrise 2 is the second volume of interviews culled from the program’s library. It includes familiar names such as Sippie Wallace and Roosevelt Sykes, as well as a host of lesser-known names. They all have stories to tell, sometimes about other blues performers they have known or African American life in mid-century Chicago. Blues Before Sunrise 2 is also interesting for including a section on the Windy City’s black gospel acts. (David Luhrssen)

he verb untrumping refers to any active attempt to reverse the policies of Donald Trump's presidency. The opposite of untrumping, of course, is trumping, defined in a new book as the political platform of racism and authoritarianism that gave rise to Trump and that defines the current state of the Republican Party. For former Barack Obama administration staffer Dan Pfeiffer, the surreality of the last few years has convinced him that there is nothing more important than beating Trump in 2020. Pfeiffer, who authored the 2018 number one New York Times best-seller Yes We (Still) Can, is out with a smart, new political book that focuses on specific strategies that Democrats can use to defeat the sitting president in the upcoming election, as well as reverse the damage caused by this administration. Un-Trumping America: A Plan to Make America a Democracy Again is an important playbook that offers bold solutions to our fractious political landscape by focusing on reforming the Supreme Court, eliminating the filibuster and doing away with the Electoral College. Heavily partisan in tone, Pfeiffer is a fervent critic of the current administration, lambasting policies ranging from gerrymandering to voter suppression, while also providing dozens of pages of suggestions on how concerned Americans can fight back. Pfeiffer served as White House communications director (2009-2013) and senior advisor to the president (2013-2015). Shellac
Post-hardcore Trio Shellac’s Anticipated Visit ::BY ETHAN DURAN
hicago-based Shellac does almost no promotion for their work and pays little attention to publicity. Though beloved in the underground indie scene that followed punk in the ’80s, the opinions of their audience have no weight on the band’s sound and message. The do-it-yourself ethic of its members is tireless; they produce their own recordings, book their own tours and manage the band themselves. They operate outside of the mainstream music industry, but instead of coming into Milwaukee unrecognized, ticket sales have pushed Shellac’s March show from the cozy Back Room at Colectivo to the enormous Turner Hall Ballroom. Ticket sales can’t measure anticipation, but those who followed indie rock through the ’80s and ’90s, especially in the Midwest, understand the whirlwind the band creates as it breezes through the region. Shellac playing in Milwaukee is a big deal because each member of the band has lived and breathed indie rock for the past three or four decades. For those who work on their own DIY music in Milwaukee, the careers of Steve Albini, Bob Weston and Todd Trainer should inspire or reflect on their paths in some way. Albini plays guitar and provides vocals, Weston plays bass guitar and Trainer plays the drums. Each member had experience playing in punk-rock bands in the ’80s—Trainer in Minneapolis’ Rifle Sport and Weston in Boston’s Volcano Suns, while Albini headed Chicago’s infamous Big Black. “It’s all about logistics and reasonable-length drives,” says Weston, talking about why Milwaukee fell into Shellac’s sights. “We haven’t played in our hometowns of Chicago and Minneapolis in a while. We need shows to get us between the two cities. Milwaukee is a great place to play and is in between.” The move from Colectivo to Turner Hall is a surprise to both ticketholders and the band itself. “I like small and intimate spaces and informal settings like that,” Albini says. “We didn’t honestly know how many people would want to come, so it seemed like it might be fine, but it turned out there was more interest in the show than they could accommodate, so we had to move it to a bigger place. That’s all.”

MILWAUKEE STORIES
Both Albini and Weston have their own Milwaukee stories from previous visits. “Our first experience in Milwaukee,” says Albini, “We played at a loft at a show that was put together by the band Dis-.” Dis- was a Milwaukee alternative rock band that started in 1991. “After that, we were taken to a pizza restaurant that was really memorable,” Albini continued, “The proprietor made a point of coming out and greeting everybody and making sure everybody knew that it was his place, that he was going to take care of us and that he was going to feed us so much that we were going to beg him to stop. That has become sort of the long-term metaphor for hospitality within the band. ‘You’re going to beg me to stop.’” “I’ve always enjoyed playing in and visiting Milwaukee.” Weston says, “I had a funny interaction once at Faust Music. The owner wouldn’t let us in until we told him what brand and model guitars and drums we each played.” Albini says he can’t predict which songs the band will play at Turner Hall, but he says he’s currently rehearsing new material with his bandmates. The storytelling in Shellac’s songs is impeccable, no matter the subject. “Riding Bikes” is a song about young vandals, “Canada” is about the frozen landmass to the north and “Prayer to God” explores jealous male rage. Other songs are comedic, like “Squirrel Song,” about a squirrel-powered electricity machine. When the band plays “Wingwalker,” AlShellac bini and Weston pretend to be airplanes during the middle Thursday, portion of the song. March 12, Riding with Shellac is Loki’s Folly, two young punk sisters from 8:30 p.m. the Twin Cities that play blasting guitar rock. “Todd saw them and Turner Hall really liked them, and he suggested we consider them for this trip,” Ballroom Albini says. “They’re extremely fun people. I like the idea of giving a young band without a lot of experience a chance to do a number of dates in a row where they’re going to have an audience.” “Most bands, when they’re starting out, don’t necessarily get to play to perceptive audience,” Albini says. “Whenever it’s possible for us to be nice to somebody and do something like this that will make their overall experiences as a band better, that’s an opportunity we shouldn’t pass up.” Shellac, with opening act Loki’s Folly, will perform at Turner Hall Ballroom on Thursday, March 12, at 8:30 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit pabsttheater.org.

The Tritonics w/ Harp Guitarist Dan Schwartz @ Linneman’s Riverwest Inn, 8 p.m.
Milwaukee rocksteady and ska sextet The Tritonics dig deep into the history of Jamaican music’s pre-reggae era. Violist Glenn Asch moonlights with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Opener Dan Schwartz first came across the harp guitar while he was working towards a degree in American finger-style guitar performance at UW-Milwaukee. Several years later, after moving back to Minneapolis, Schwartz noticed the outline of a harp guitar in the shop window of a luthier who had been commissioned to build one. He decided to build two, and Schwartz got the second one. Schwartz will be joined by his professor (and Tritonics guitarist), Peter Roller.
Nathaniel Rateliff w/ Courtney Marie Andrews @ The Riverside Theater, 8 p.m.
“I think it was [science-fiction writer] Ursula Le Guin in The Earthsea Cycle who says, ‘Never trust someone without a limp.’ Character isn’t defined by our strengths but by what we overcome,” says songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff. Like an alchemist, Rateliff has taken life’s challenges and turned them into fuel for his art. His father died when he was 13, and his mother left with her new husband four years later. Richard Swift, Rateliff’s longtime friend and producer, died in 2018, and a failed marriage figured into the making of his album, And It’s Still Alright. More introspective than the music with his band The Night Sweats, the rock-and-soul sound of a horn section is swapped for the album’s nine-piece string section. “I think I always want to see hope in the darkness, and I like to try to share that,” Rateliff says.

WAMI-nominated band Rocket Cat’s vocalist, Suzanne Singh, spent two years in her early 20s in a Romanian town during a very turbulent time in modern world history. Rocket Cat’s song “1989 (Rise Up)” is an anthem of courage and a tribute to the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The band members blend their backgrounds in alternative, progressive, hard-rock and power-pop sounds. Dinosaur Rocket’s gumbo of Delta blues, psychedelic rock, soul and funk come from the approach of a jazz tradition of improvisation. Guitarist Steve Peplin daylights as an instructor at MATC and Lawrence University, and saxophonist Jesse Montijo has performed with Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, trombonist Fred Wesley (musical director for James Brown’s band) and soul legend Solomon Burke.
According to notes from Steve Cohen’s previously unpublished interview, blues musician Stokes moved to Milwaukee in the early 1950s from Carthage, Miss., where he learned to play guitar from Elmore James. Stokes, who passed away on Dec. 3, 2019, was known for his golden voice and his eclectic, soulful guitar playing as well as the legacy he left in the form of over two generations of mentees and apprentices who credit Stokes with changing their lives as artists. The all-star list of tribute performers includes Jim Liban, Harvey Westmoreland, Steve Cohen and Leroy Airmaster Band, Matthew Skoller, Billy Flynn, Marc Wilson, Tom Wilson, Perry Webber, Milwaukee Slim, Kurt Koenig, Matt Liban, Alex Wilson, Matthew Wilson and Jim Schwarz.

First Stage’s ‘The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors’ @ Todd Wehr Theater, 7 p.m.
This children’s rock musical is the story of the classic game Rock, Paper, Scissors. They were the strongest, smartest and fastest warriors in all the land, and though they searched far and wide for worthy opponents, no one could beat them—until they met each other and a musical battle royale began to see who would come out on top. Through Sunday, April 5. Suggested for families with young people ages 4-10.

::NEWS OF THE WEIRD
::FREEWILLASTROLOGY ::BY ROB BREZSNY PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In 1637, renowned English poet John Milton wrote “Lycidas,” a poetic elegy in honor of a friend. Reading it today, almost four centuries later, we are struck by how archaic and obscure the language is, with phrases like “O ye laurels” and “Ah! Who hath reft my dearest pledge?” A famous 20th-century Piscean poet, Robert Lowell, was well-educated enough to understand Milton’s meaning, but also decided to “translate” all of “Lycidas” into plainspoken modern English. I’d love to see you engage in comparable activities during the coming weeks, Pisces by updating the past, reshaping and reinterpreting your old stories and revising the ways you talk and think about key memories. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Progress rarely unfolds in a glorious, ever-rising, upward arc. The more usual pattern is gradual and uneven. Each modest ascent is followed by a phase of retrenchment and integration. In the best-case scenario, the most recent ascent reaches a higher level than the previous ascent. By my estimate, you’re in one of those periods of retrenchment and integration right now, Aries. It’s understandable if you feel a bit unenthusiastic about it. But I’m here to tell you that it’s crucial to your next ascent. Let it work its subtle magic. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You’re most likely to be in sweet alignment with cosmic rhythms if you regard the next three weeks as a time of graduation. I encourage you to take inventory of the lessons you’ve been studying since your birthday in 2019. How have you done in your efforts to foster interesting, synergistic intimacy? Are you more passionately devoted to what you love? Have you responded brightly as life has pushed you to upgrade the vigor and rigor of your commitments? Just for fun, give yourself a grade for those “classes,” as well as any others that have been important. Then— again, just for fun—draw up a homemade diploma for yourself to commemorate and honor your work. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Are you ready to seize a more proactive role in shaping what happens in the environments you share with cohorts? Do you have any interest in exerting leadership to enhance the well-being of the groups that are important to you? Now is an excellent time to take brave actions that will raise the spirits and boost the fortunes of allies whose fates are intermingled with yours. I hope you’ll be a role model for the art of pleasing oneself while being of service to others. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian author Lionel Trilling (1905-’75) was an influential intellectual and literary critic. One of his heroes was another such critic, Edmund Wilson. On one occasion, Trilling was using a urinal in a men’s room at the New School for Social Research in New York. Imagine how excited he was when Wilson, whom he had never met, arrived to use the urinal right next to his. Now imagine his further buoyancy when Wilson not only spoke to Trilling but also expressed familiarity with his work. I foresee similar luck or serendipity coming your way soon: seemingly unlikely encounters with interesting resources and happy accidents that inspire your self-confidence. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Poet Conee Berdera delivered a poignant message to her most valuable possession: the flesh and blood vehicle that serves as sanctuary for all her yearnings, powers and actions. “My beloved body,” she writes, “I am so sorry I did not love you enough.” Near the poem’s end, she vows “to love and cherish” her body. I wish she would have been even more forceful, saying something like, “From now on, dear body, I promise to always know exactly what you need and give it to you with all my ingenuity and panache.” Would you consider making such a vow to your own most valuable possession, Leo? It’s a favorable time to do so. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Luckily, the turning point you have arrived at doesn’t present you with 20 different possible futures. You don’t have to choose from among a welter of paths headed in disparate directions. There are only a few viable options to study and think about. Still, I’d like to see you further narrow down the alternatives. I hope you’ll use the process of elimination as you get even clearer about what you don’t want. Let your fine mind gather a wealth of detailed informaSHEPHERD EXPRESS
tion and objective evidence, then hand over the final decision to your intuition. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Certain artists are beyond my full comprehension. Maybe I’m not smart enough to understand their creations, or I’m not deep enough to fathom why their work is considered important. For example, I don’t enjoy or admire the operas of Richard Wagner or the art of Mark Rothko. Same with the music of Drake or the novels of Raymond Carter or the art of Andy Warhol. The problem is with me, not them; I don’t try to claim they’re overrated or mediocre. Now I urge you to do what I just did, Libra, only on a broader scale: Acknowledge that some of the people, ideas, art and situations you can’t appreciate are not necessarily faulty, wrong or inadequate. Their value may simply be impossible for you to recognize. It’s a perfect time for you to undertake this humble work. I suspect it will be liberating. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio-born Ralph Bakshi has made animated films and TV shows for more than 60 years. His work has been influential. “I’m the biggest ripped-off cartoonist in the history of the world,” he says. Milder versions of his experience are not uncommon for many Scorpios. People are prone to copying you, borrowing from you and even stealing from you. They don’t always consciously know they’re doing it, and they may not offer you proper appreciation. I’m guessing that something like this phenomenon may be happening to you right now. My advice? First, be pleased about how much clout you’re wielding. Second, if anyone is borrowing from you without making the proper acknowledgment, do speak up about it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Vainly I sought nourishment in shadows and errors,” wrote author Jorge Luis Borges. We have all been guilty of miscalculations like those. Each of us has occasionally put our faith in people and ideas that weren’t worthy of us. None of us is so wise that we always choose influences that provide the healthiest fuel. That’s the bad news, Sagittarius. The good news is that you now have excellent instincts about where to find the best long-term nourishment. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Poet Adrienne Rich wrote, “When a woman tells the truth, she is creating the possibility for more truth around her.” I believe this same assertion is true about people of all genders. I also suspect that, right now, you are in a particularly pivotal position to be a candid revealer—to enhance and refine everyone’s truth-telling by being a paragon of honesty yourself. To achieve the best results, I encourage you to think creatively about what exactly it means for you to tell the deep and entire truth. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Through some odd Aquarian-like quirk, astrologers have come to harbor the apparently paradoxical view that your sign is ruled by both Saturn and Uranus. At first glance, that’s crazy! Saturn is the planet of discipline, responsibility, conservatism, diligence and order. Uranus is the planet of awakening, surprise, rebellion, barrier-breaking and liberation. How can you Aquarians incorporate the energies of both? Well, that would require a lengthy explanation beyond the scope of this horoscope. But I will tell you this: During the rest of 2020, you will have more potential to successfully coordinate your inner Saturn and your inner Uranus than you have had in years; meditate on how you will do just that. Homework: Don’t tolerate bullying from critical voices in your head or from supposedly “nice” people who are trying to guilt-trip you. © 2020 Rob Brezsny—Free Will Astrology

n a report published on Tuesday, Feb. 18, the South Florida Sun Sentinel revealed that school districts are struggling to comply with the state’s requirement that every school have “a good guy with a gun.” Among recent hiccups: Near Orlando, a safe-school officer sent her husband a nude video she recorded in a school bathroom while on her lunch break; in Hillsborough County, a school guardian thought her gun was unloaded when she shot through a mirror as she practiced quick-drawing in front of it, and another officer pawned his service weapon and ballistic vest—his supervisor discovered he was carrying a toy gun in his holster.
Let Sleeping Cats Lie Lacie the Norwegian forest cat is at the center of a heated two-year dispute in Brewerton, N.Y., that has now gone to state’s highest court. Original owner Carol Money accuses adoptive owner Danette Romano of refusing to let Lacie sleep in bed with her, a key provision that Money says was in the adoption agreement both parties signed in April 2018. Syracuse.com reported that, according to the lawsuit, Money regularly visited Lacie in her new home after the adoption and found the cat to be “skittish and fearful” and became very upset after Romano’s husband allegedly admitted, “We don’t let Lacie sleep with us.” By December 2019, tensions had increased to the point that Romano complained to the Onondaga County sheriff’s office and had her lawyer send Money a letter ordering her to stop contacting her. Money’s lawsuit accuses Romano of breach of contract, lying about her intention to let Lacie sleep in her bed and demands the cat’s return.
noises in his attic suspected squirrels might have gotten in, but when he went to inspect, he found instead... a man, lying on a mattress. KOCO News reported on Friday, Feb. 28, the unnamed homeowner called 911 and reported a “stranger in my house; I have a gun on him right now.” Police responding to the call told reporters, “there was actually somebody that appeared to have taken up residence in (the) attic for some time,” and the home has a staircase, “that goes up the side of the house with attic access.” The homeowner escorted the squatter at gunpoint to the driveway, where officers were waiting.
Marijuana Mayhem Ypsilanti, Mich., police were called to an apartment complex on Thursday, Jan. 16, where they found a 23-year-old man smoking a cigarette and pressing a bloody towel to his side, MLive reported. The man told officers his partner, 28-year-old Neil Wasinski—better known as Nalla and referred to as she in court records—had attacked him with a 21-inch samurai sword because he didn’t buy her any marijuana. The attack resulted in multiple stab wounds to the man’s arms and torso, and one of his lungs had collapsed, according to police. Tracked down at her apartment, Wasinski told police, “Please… go away,” and she later claimed to have no memory of the incident. Police, however, did not “go away,” instead finding in Nalla’s apartment a still-blood-stained, 21-inch katana sword on her bedroom floor, according to their report; Wasinski has been charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Ketchup on Your Subway? A rider on the New York City subway employed a novel way of protecting his personal space on Friday, Feb. 7, Fox News reported. The seated passenger removed a bottle of ketchup from his bag and squirted a squiggly perimeter on the floor around his seat, apparently hoping to keep fellow straphangers away. Twitter erupted with funny comments after one user posted a photo: “Gotta protect yourself from the mustard demons; they can’t cross the barrier,” and “What brand of ketchup, though?” New York City Transit doesn’t recommend passengers follow this guy’s example.
