Welcome to the Fifth Annual

STEIN & DINE Beer, Cheese & Sausage Festival Saturday, April 22 1-2 p.m. VIP 2-6 p.m. General Admission State Fair Expo Center ::BY RACHEL REPETTI

I

t’s like your local pub, only bigger. Stein & Dine, back for its fifth year, offers the solution to that overwhelming question: What beer do I want? With so many new and amazing breweries to choose from, where do you even begin? The answer: at Stein & Dine! We’ve hand selected breweries from around the state and our neighbors Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan, offering a wide array of styles and flavors of beer for you to check out. Don’t like that IPA? Pour it out and go on to the next. The samples are ample, so explore! I know I’m excited to try some new and interesting beers such as Peanut Butter Imperial Stout, El Chavo Cider (a heated blend of habanero and mango), Tiny Giant Citra Saison and Bacon Bomb. For our special VIP goers, there will be even more unique samples like Higher Grounds Coffee Stout and Apple Brandy Dedication. Grab your complimentary Stein & Dine sampling glass, chat with the brewers and learn all about your new favorite beer! Not a huge fan of beer? Don’t worry; you can enjoy samples from local wineries, cider bars and distilleries as well. Sip some herbed gin or try a new whiskey. Perhaps that red wine is making your mouth water or you just want some icecold cider refreshment. We’ve got you covered. Let’s not forget about the food! Enjoy samples from local cheese artisans, sausage makers and local restaurants, offering tasty bites ranging from sushi to soup. While you’re sampling all the delicious things that Wisconsin has to offer, listen to live music from local rock band Burgundy Ties, then stop in at one or all of our featured luxury lounges. Step into the Woodford Reserve Bourbon Lounge for special hourly tastings and a photo booth. Relax in the Miller Time Pub Lounge to sample chili and enter to win prizes. Have some fun at The Micro Pub Lounge playing games, sampling Cream Puff Ale and doing “Keg Kills.” There aren’t many things better in life than beer and food, and it is all here at Stein & Dine. We’d love to see you there, getting your drink on with 3,000 of your closest friends. General admission is $40 in advance or $50 at the door. Limited VIP tickets are available for $75. Make sure to grab yours before they run out! For ticket information, visit shepherdtickets.com.

STEIN & DINE EVENT GUIDE

Sweet Peaches and Bourbon

Woodford Reserve suggests a refreshing drink for the summer season ::BY LISA KORTEBEIN

D

o you have a go-to patio drink? Something with vodka, maybe? Or gin and lemonade or tonic? We invite you to throw that conventional patio drink playbook out the window and invite a little bit of the South into your summertime drink menu. Think a cold, inviting glass of iced tea. Think horseraces and sunshine and hats. Think Kentucky. Think bourbon. According to their website, Woodford Reserve’s bourbon is “comprised of more than 200 delectable flavor notes, from bold grain and wood, to sweet aromatics, spice, and fruit and floral notes.” They’ve combined two and crafted one of their signature cocktails: the Patio Season Bourbon Peach Tea. The bourbon pairs nicely with the innate sweetness of peaches in the earthy, floral fragrance and flavor of tea. The tannins of the tea (think shrink wrap on your tongue; that’s tannins) balance against a hint of sweetness and the mellow smoothness of the bourbon. Using honey simple syrup (1/4 part honey, 3/4 part hot water stirred until the honey dissolves) lends a unique flavor profile that’s floral and grassy while the rosemary offers STEIN & DINE EVENT GUIDE

herbaceous perfume to curb the sweetness and accentuate the herbal tones of the tea and bourbon. It’s pure refreshment in a glass. This drink just begs for a patio and a healthy dose of sunshine. Make yours with the recipe below, but be prepared to share because this one’s doesn’t like being alone.

Patio Season Bourbon Peach Tea 2 ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon 1 ounce honey simple syrup Peach tea (like Rishi Peach Blossom White Tea Blend) Lemon wedge Rosemary sprig Add ingredients to a shaker and shake until chilled. Serve over ice with a lemon wedge and a sprig of rosemary.

urgundy Ties is a hard-working Midwest rock band. They have been hitting the road playing venues in Milwaukee and beyond for more than a decade. With four albums written and recorded, their music has been positively reviewed by the Shepherd Express as “singer-songwriter confessional sensitivity gets filtered through current-day Americana.” For Stein & Dine, they will be throwing in a number of vintage rock ’n’ roll tunes from their influences as well.

Veterans to small and large stages (including being a five-time Summerfest act) they have shared the stage with regional and national touring acts at major venues and festivals in Milwaukee and throughout the Midwest. The combination of their eclectic sound and live performance makes Burgundy Ties truly stand out as an original and inspired Milwaukee band. For more information and an up-to-date calendar of events you can visit their band website at burgundytiesband.com. STEIN & DINE EVENT GUIDE

Hangin’ Out at the Micro

A Bootfull of Beer at Miller Time Pub

M

Since opening in 1999, The Micro @ Wisconsin State Fair has become one of Milwaukee’s favorite hangouts—even though it’s only open 18 days a year! You read that correctly: 18 days a year! It has grown to include 50-plus of the best craft beers that Wisconsin breweries have to offer. With awesome events like the Wisconsin State Fair, Harvest Fair, Summer Untapped on Memorial Day weekend and The Keg Killer Winter Beer Festival, you now can Micro all year long! (kegkiller.com) SU steinanddine ad 1-4page.pdf

iller Time Pub & Grill (Hilton Milwaukee City Center, 509 W. Wisconsin Ave.) partnered with Miller Brewing to bring you a brand that not only has the Miller name, but also memorabilia, the old commercials and, of course, great beer. They are known for their “boot” glasses (there are four sizes), which is a tradition that is commonly believed to date back to Prussia. Also known as a “Bierstiefel,” this is a fun German tradition that we continue today. There is a trick to drinking from “Das Boot” though—be sure to tip the toe to the 1

side to avoid being sprayed! Oktoberfest is another German tradition that starts during the third weekend in September and ends the first Sunday of October. What started off as a celebration of the marriage of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in 1810 has turned into the largest festival in the world. Miller Time Pub celebrates with an annual “Oktober-Streetfest,” which will take place Saturday, Sept. 30 this year and will feature signature beers, including Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest and Little Eddy’s Über-Oktoberfest. There are always Klement’s brats, Frank’s Kraut, traditional

German pretzels and the chance to win beer for a year! There will be traditional music, a DJ and dancing—all under a big tent on Fifth Street. It’s always “Miller Time” at the Pub with live music every Tuesday-Saturday. Come for the music and stay for the late night happy hour. Happy hour runs 5-7 p.m. with three for $3 taps, rail drinks and wine; and then continues 10 p.m.-midnight every Monday-Thursday. Take advantage of $3 Miller High Life taps and shots, plus a $5 burger and shoestring fries special and $6 High Life combo (burger and Miller High Life tap) for late-night revelers.
