his is not the race Earnell Lucas was anticipating when he entered the contest for Milwaukee County sheriff last spring. A 25-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department, Lucas had expected to challenge the county’s contentious former sheriff, David Clarke, a prominent anti-Black Lives Matter crusader, Fox News regular and the face of the problems at the county jail, where four inmates died in a span of just six months and pregnant women had given birth in shackles. Clarke, however, abruptly resigned last August. Lucas now faces an opponent with a much lower profile: acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt, who had been the office’s second in command under Clarke. A self-described fiscal conservative, Schmidt is also an evangelist minister who has recorded more than 100 sermons for sermonaudio.com, a website that calls itself “the largest and most trusted library of audio sermons from conservative churches and ministries worldwide.” A third candidate, Deputy Robert Ostrowski, is also on the ballot for the Tuesday, Aug. 14, primary. With no Republican on the Tuesday, Nov. 6, general election ballot, the winner of the primary will be a near lock for the four-year term. Even with Clarke out of the picture, Lucas argues that the stakes in the race are still high. He has questioned Schmidt’s ability to reform the sheriff’s office, especially given Schmidt’s role overseeing the jail. “I don’t want Milwaukee County to be misled,” Lucas said. “I am the true Democrat in the race who represents the progressive values of the Democratic Party and Milwaukee County.” Lucas joined the Milwaukee Police Department after graduating from Rufus King High School in 1976. He earned the department’s Heroism Award in 1982 after surviving a gunshot to the face when responding to a call on New Year’s Day. “My head swelled to the size of a pumpkin,” Lucas recalls. “I remember seeing my father walk into the hospital room—seeing a grown man cry who’s looking at his son with a head engorged by bullet powder.” To this day, Lucas still has shotgun pellets embedded above his right temple. After six months of injury leave, Lucas returned to the force. “It was either stay out on disability or return to duty, and for me, once I was able to overcome my injuries, it wasn’t a difficult choice,” he said. “I wanted to get back out there. My mission was to serve and protect this community; social justice. That was what started me on my way to become a police officer, and so that was what led me back.” Lucas served the force for another 20 years before retiring as a captain in 2002 to take a job as supervisor of security for Major League Baseball, working under then-Commissioner Bud Selig. Ahead of the August primary election, Lucas spoke with the Shepherd Express about the state of the race and his plan for reforming the sheriff’s office.

he Shepherd Express serves as a clearinghouse for all activities in the greater Milwaukee area that peacefully push back against discriminatory, reactionary or authoritarian actions and policies of the Donald Trump administration, as well as other activities by all those who seek to thwart social justice. We will publicize and promote actions, demonstrations, planning meetings, teach-ins, party-building meetings, drinking-discussion get-togethers and any other actions that are directed toward fighting back to preserve our liberal democratic system.
Thursday, Aug. 2 CLOSEmsdf and Prison Strike Day of Visibility @ Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (1015 N. 10th St.), 11:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Starting at 11:30 a.m. and ending before midnight, activists will take a variety of actions at and around the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility to increase public awareness of jail conditions and express support to community members trapped inside this and other prisons in Wisconsin and the U.S.
100% Clean Energy Campaign Kick-Off @ Plymouth Church (2717 E. Hampshire Ave.), 6-8 p.m. The Milwaukee Economic and Climate Justice Coalition is launching a push for Milwaukee to adapt a clean energy strategy. Peace Action Wisconsin: Stand for Peace @ the corner of Kinnickinnic and Russell avenues, noon-1 p.m.

Summer Film Series: ‘Poverty, Inc.’ @ UW-Milwaukee Student Union (2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., second floor), 7 p.m.
Drawing from more than 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries, Poverty, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore. It exposes the industry of “doing good,” whose results have been mixed and sometimes catastrophic.

Cocina 1022
!"#$!%&'%(#)*"& +,*-./0&*1& COCINA 1022 ::BY JAMIE LEE RAKE
Smoked salsa. That should be incentive enough to visit Cocina 1022, 1022 S. First St. Not just the jalapeños, but every ingredient in the condiment accompanying this Mexican restaurant’s white corn tortilla chips is given the same fiery treatment. The burnished hue may appear unusual but the preparation makes for an addictive dip. And that’s just for starters. The pambazo is a torta-like sandwich filled with chorizo, diced potatoes, lettuce, avocado and mayonnaise, its namesake bun dunked in a vibrantly red chili sauce. An exemplary side, the esquites are sweet corn kernels made creamy and piquant with cotija cheese, jalapeños and lime. Cheesecake, churros with ice cream and flan number among Cocina 1022’s rotating dessert selections, but the daily varieties of aguas frescas, such as strawberry, can likewise complement the restaurant’s savory fare or offset it with a sweet afternote.

Although orchards still abound, Door County long ago gave up its spot as the nation’s tart cherry capital. But eating and drinking flourish as part of the area’s tourist trade.
Despite the omnipresent water, the presence of jet skis is minimal. Silent sports seem to dominate the Door. Sailboats and kayakers, bikers and hikers, golfers and shoppers are everywhere.
4'1#)'#$, The Door CountyWineTrail boasts eight different vintners and begins, ironically, with von Stiehl Winery, the oldest of the group, in the Kewaunee County community of Algoma. Expect lots of fruit wines as well as more sophisticated varietals. Some wineries offer complimentary tastings while others charge for samples. "#$%&$'/$,&Door Peninsula Winery, located in Carlsville, offers more than 50 wines and ciders from a wide variety of locally grown and imported grapes. Visitors can try up to seven wines for free, which you can bump to 14 if you and your significant other share the one-ounce pours. The building also is home to Door County Distillery, the first in the area. Kayaking in Door County

fter the Dells, Door County is Wisconsin’s best-known vacation destination. With its hostelries, wineries, restaurants and outdoor recreation, it’s the perfect destination for those wanting a quick two-day getaway. But as we found, good planning is critical for making the most of limited free time. We don’t have an hour-by-hour itinerary to offer, but here are specific ideas and recommendations to help you get the most from your mini-vacation.
!"#$%&"'()!"#$%&"'
Think of Door County as the thumb in Wisconsin’s mitten, a 482-square-mile peninsula with 298 miles of coastline divided between Lake Michigan on the east and Green Bay (the body of water, not the city) on the west. The completion in 1881 of the Sturgeon Bay Shipping Canal connected both bodies of water, effectively turning the lager part of the county into an island itself. Nearby islands Washington and Rock, located just off of Door County’s tip, complete the land mass. The county’s name is derived from the French for “Death’s Door,” the strait that separates the peninsula from Washington Island and whose rough waters caused many shipwrecks and claimed many lives. The peninsula’s length is traversed by Highway 42 on the Green Bay side and Highway 57 on the Lake Michigan side. In the heat of summer, 42 is a slow crawl between the tourist towns of Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay and a few others. To make better time, head east to 57, which allows you to travel unimpeded down a mostly rural road broken up only by the towns of Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor. The east side is the “slow side” of the Door.

The paintings, which depict a great Native American battle, are visible near the water line. Over time the image have become faded and lichen-covered, which make them difficult to find, but worth the effort. On your way back keep your eyes on the water. You may just spot the remains of the Fleetwing, a schooner that ran aground in the bay in 1888. It’s located just 30 feet offshore and you can kayak right over the top if it. On a clear night, a visit to the park can open up a whole new—and infinite—view for visitors, adding a sparkling end to your two-day vay-cay.

::THISWEEKINMILWAUKEE FRIDAY, AUG. 3
Colin Quinn @ Turner Hall Ballroom, 8 p.m.
In the years since he left “Saturday Night Live,” where he manned the “Weekend Update” desk in the late ’90s after Norm Macdonald was fired for making too many OJ Simpson jokes, New York comedian Colin Quinn has appeared in movies like Grown Ups, That’s My Boy and Trainwreck, where he played Amy Schumer’s father. But mostly he’s continued doing standup, releasing a series of specials for HBO and Netflix. Back on the road after suffering a heart attack earlier this year, the 59-year-old comedy veteran headlines this show as part of the Milwaukee Comedy Festival, which runs at multiple venues through Sunday, Aug. 5.
SATURDAY, AUG. 4 Center Street Daze @ Center Street, 11 a.m.
Kool Keith
THURSDAY, AUG. 2
Kool Keith w/ Rizenhower The Great Poupon, Guerilla Ghost and Taiyamo Denku @ Riverwest Public House, 8 p.m.
Kool Keith may or may not have actually been institutionalized for mental illness, but regardless of its veracity, that story became one of hip-hop’s most powerful rumors. It’s easy to see why so many people believe it: Years before Lil Wayne made lunatic rhymes fashionable, Keith was rapping in dense, manic and utterly off-the-wall imagery, first as the engine behind the golden-age Bronx rap crew the Ultramagnetic MC’s and then as the demented mind behind Dr. Octagon, his gynecologist-inspace epic with producer Dan the Automator. Keith has bounced between myriad personas since that career-defining project, among them Black Elvis, Dr. Dooom, Reverand Tom, Mr. Nogatco and Tashan Dorrsett. He’s not much for quality control, but even his shakiest albums occasionally recapture the bizarre spark that made Dr. Octagon such an instant underground phenomenon.
Wisconsin State Fair @ Wisconsin State Fair Grounds, 8 a.m.
And we’re off. A state tradition dating back to 1851, the Wisconsin State Fair returns for another 11 marathon days of amusement rides, music, animal showcases, deep-fried novelties and caloric indulgences. For this year’s opening day, guests can get in for just $2 when they donate two cans of pears or peaches. Two popular Milwaukee acts, soul-rock singer Abby Jeanne and rockers Tigernite will co-headline an 8 p.m. bill at the fair’s Associated Bank Amphitheater, while country artist Montgomery Gentry headlines the venue’s ticketed Main Stage. The fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 12.
Margo Price w/ Count This Penny @ Turner Hall Ballroom, 8 p.m.
“A little pain never hurt anyone,” Margo Price sings on her second album of sweet, old-school country, 2017’s All American Made, and she should know, because she’s experienced her share of it. Like Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette and the other country greats she draws from, Price draws from a deep well of personal tragedy, turning her losses into resilient, peppy tunes. It’s easy to see what Jack White saw in her when he signed her as the first country artist on his label Third Man Records. Price’s latest album also features a cameo from the legendary Willie Nelson on the track “Learning to Lose.”

No event captures the quirky, communal spirit that makes the Riverwest neighborhood such a treasure quite like Center Street Daze. The festival celebrates its 21th year this weekend with a full day of music—at The Uptowner, Jazz Gallery, High Dive, Company Brewing, Quarters Rock ‘n’ Roll Palace and Club Timbuktu, with bands and DJs including Adi Amour, Voots Warning, Ruth B8r Ginsburg, Taj Raiden, Klassik, El Escapado, Slaughter Party, Andy Noble and Selector Max—and a ton of quirky tournaments and competitions, which in recent years have included pushcart races, street pool tournaments, dodgeball and pinball. Riverwest Radio will also be broadcasting live throughout the day.
Black Arts Fest MKE @ Summerfest Grounds
Filling the void left behind by the African World Festival, which hosted its last event at the Summerfest grounds in 2013, this year the venue debuts a new African American arts festival called Black Arts Fest MKE. In addition to dance presentations and workshops, children’s activities, art displays and local vendors, the event will feature a variety of music including gospel, blues and Motown, and headliners including 84-year-old blues legend Bobby Rush, the pioneering R&B trio Tony! Toni! Toné!, hip-hop legend MC Lyte, former “American Idol” contestant Naima Adedapo, and Milwaukee’s premier Prince tribute band, The Prince Experience.
MONDAY, AUG. 6 Kinky Friedman w/ Jim Hoehn @ Shank Hall, 8 p.m.
Singer, novelist, satirist and occasional political candidate Richard “Kinky” Friedman doesn’t like to limit himself when it comes to his career options. After playing music with his first band, King Arthur and the Carrots, at the University of Texas at Austin, Friedman served two years in the Peace Corps, where he met his road manager Dylan Ferrero. Since then, the veteran entertainer has refined his sardonic country rock as a solo act and with various backing band lineups, producing controversial numbers like “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and comedic songs such as “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed.”

African Heritage
Nickel&Rose w/ Mama’s Broke @ Anodyne Coffee, 8 p.m. Two duos that explore the boundaries of roots music share this bill at Anodyne Coffee. As Mama’s Broke, Canadian songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Amy Lou and Lisa Maria create a pastiche of Americana, blues and Celtic music, while incorporating elements of dance into their performances. They’re joined here by Milwaukee’s Nickle&Rose, the pairing of upright bassist Johanna Rose and guitarist Carl Nichols, who sing songs of heartbreak, resilience and acceptance. They’ll release their new EP Americana in September.
Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey @ Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, 8 p.m.
Unlike many of the bigger pop groups of the ’80s, Thompson Twins never cashed in with reunion tours after breaking up. Known for their hit “Hold Me Now,” the new wave group never regrouped after their 1993 breakup, and for more than two decades, frontman Tom Bailey avoided performing their songs live, as he focused on a new career scoring film. In recent years he’s been back on the road, though, and now he has some new music to perform along with those old Thompson Twins hits. This year he released his first solo album, and first new record in a quarter century: Science Fiction, which he recorded on his laptop while touring the world.
WebsterX: Choose Your Own Adventure @ Heart Haus, 8 p.m.
Milwaukee rapper WebsterX has been busy this summer, releasing a series of new singles as part of a campaign he’s dubbed his “Restless Summer.” He’ll return to performing later this month with a show at Tiefenthaler Park on Saturday, Aug. 25, but first he’s presenting this art installation/immersive experience featuring a variety of artists and musicians from around the city, including Malcolm McCrae, Q The Sun, Siren, B~Free, Quinten Farr and WC Tank. It’s at a pop-up location called the Heart Haus (727 N. Milwaukee St.) and will feature drinks from Enlightened Brewing and Gathering Place Brewing. Admission is free for attendees 21 and over, though an RSVP is required.

American Players Theatre Season: The Second Half
American Players Theatre continues its summer-into-fall series of indoor (Touchstone Theatre) and outdoor (Hill Theatre) productions of contemporary and classic plays this month—plus a final entry opening in October. George Bernard Shaw had a noteworthy skill for dressing up serious social issues in the clothing of lively banter and sex appeal—both of which are on full display in Heartbreak House, which runs Aug. 3-Oct. 5. Imbued with timeless questions about morality and power, William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure offers a complex and powerful look at the battle we all face to be our best selves; it runs Aug. 10-Oct. 6. Directed by Ameenah Kaplan and adapted from the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally, Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good is set in the Australian penal colony where we find that all crimes are not equal and not all prisoners are crooks. It runs Aug. 11-Oct. 7. Finally, John Morogiello’s Engaging Shaw brings us back full circle, as it centers on the famous philandering author of Heartbreak House. (John Jahn) At American Players Theatre, 5950 Golf Course Road, Spring Green, Wis. For tickets, call 608-588-2361 or visit americanplayers.org/plays.
Forty Carats
Adapted by Jay Allen from a play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Gredy, Forty Carats is a “rom-com” about a 40-year-old woman who gets a new lease on life when she starts dating a man half her age. It all begins when twice-divorced real estate agent Ann (Sam Billeck) takes a vacation to Greece, where she meets Peter (Zach Sharrock), a young, wealthy and urbane man she sees as a vacation fling who she’ll never see again after heading back home to her mother and teenage daughter. But when Peter suddenly shows up on her doorstep a few weeks later, Ann must decide what to do with the conflicting emotions, priorities, responsibilities—as well as her own reputation in the local community. For those wishing to attend Forty Carats, Village Playhouse offers some helpful logistical advice: “National Avenue is closed between 70th and 76th streets due to construction. You can still get to the theater by taking 70th or 76th St. to Orchard or Greenfield to 73rd St.” (John Jahn) Aug. 3-19 at Village Playhouse, 1500 S. 73rd St., West Allis. For tickets, call 414-207-4879 or visit villageplayhouse.org/forty-carats.
The Flesh Trade
“Corsets, cannibals and cash collide in this darkly comedic ragtimeinfused musical,” Alchemist Theatre explains regarding their upcoming production of The Flesh Trade, which was written and will be directed by Michael Christopher. It’s also variously described as “A darkly comedic, fun, funny and sexy Old West show with murder and music.” Honey (Kendall Yorkey) is a tough and scrappy saloon dancer and ladyof-the-night who is about to call it quits when a mysterious survivor of the Donner Party of doomed westward trekkers arrives and offers her some much-needed money. To what purpose? It’s for procuring some fresh meat. Is this really the way Honey will escape her old brothel-based life in Tombstone? Or, as Alchemist punningly puts it, “has she bitten off more than she can chew?” (John Jahn) Aug. 3-18 at The Alchemist Theatre, 2569 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. For tickets, call 414-207-4879 or visit fleshtrade.brownpapertickets.com. 20 | A U G U S T 2 , 2 0 1 8

As always, the virtuosity and virtues the style emphasizes were im3 pressive. Members of the Danceworks Ignite Performance Workshop led by choreographer Paul Webb III, in3 cluding several pros, opened the show with brief solos and bursts of group dancing. Performers came and went with shifts of rhythm in the accompanying hip-hop mixtape; uniformity was never the point; it was individuals working together. Next was a daz3 zling performance by virtuosos Nate Ramos, Jasper Sanchez, Clay Savage, Regina Stieber, Sophie Sul3 livan, Juni Yang and master choreographer Joshua Yang. There followed a solo by Rae Bu that seemed born of yoga. I felt her sharing energy—drawing ours and giving it back in spades. I could hear the hush among the audience. AJ Johnson’s shocking “3 Stages of Freedom and Slaves” dared to link contemporary domestic abuse and self-abuse to slavery. Powerfully danced by Chancie Cole, Johnson’s anguished, angry cen3 tral character committed suicide. By contrast, “We
Just Wanna Dance”(by Samantha Mesa, Gabi Sus3 tache and Juni Yang followed; and dance they did, as equals and brilliantly. Their obvious bond was also important; Nate Ramos’ dark solo as a lonely, anx3 ious depressive reminded us of that. Richard Brasfield (he of many names and perso3 nas) is another urban dance master. What’s thrill3 ing in his dancing and choreography now is that all genders are present, not just the traditional two. He embodied that twice; first as a dancer in a long group work, then as co-choreographer and dancer in the invitingly weird world of the wonderfully titled “Sophistirats.” Girl children from Studio One Dance Company, wearing suits and ties in bright modernist prints and fedoras, stole the show with their thrilling, per3 fectly executed “Am I Wrong.” Their choreographer was Morgan Williams of SueMo Dance Company. SueMo II, teens training for dance careers, provided another concert highlight with Leila Henry’s “Fair and the Weak,” a deeply felt feminist work that these young women clearly understood. Further virtuosity in Clay Savage’s and Angela Peters’ “Untitled” (most notably by Jasper Sanchez), a gorgeous duet by Gabi Sustache and jazz/modern dancer Gina Laurenzi, and Joshua Yang’s moving “Origins,” a kind of community dance/prayer, com3 pleted the program. Florentine Quartet’s Summery ‘Great American Songbook’ ::BY JOHN JAHN
T
he Florentine Opera Company gathered together its fine young quartet of summer residency vocalists plus spirited pianist Ruben Piirainen for a delightful concert titled “Broadway and the Great American Songbook” last Friday and Saturday evening at the Florentine Opera Center in Riverwest. This informal recital was well attended (on Friday) and proved to be a crowd-pleaser. Interestingly enough, the program was most notable for what it didn’t contain given the subject matter as opposed to what it did. Yes, there were some Broadway-American musical classics featured, but the more obscure outnumbered the familiar. This is always somewhat of a risk, of course. It also moved into much more contemporary ground—especially in the concert’s second half. Again, risky. I was, indeed, somewhat disappointed not to see some of what I had hoped for on the program, but even so, admittedly, it was enjoyable to hear some pieces I’d never heard before. The 2018 Summer Residency Quartet consists of soprano Nicole Heinen, mezzo-soprano Briana Moynihan, tenor Nicholas Huff and baritone Stephen Hobe. Together or separately, they not only sang but semi-staged such standards as “On the Street Where You Live” (My Fair Lady), “Body and Soul,” “Get Happy” and the bravura “Soliloquy” from Carousel. Treading less familiar turf, they also performed songs from Hunchback of Notre Dame, Shenandoah, Ghost, Into the Woods and Songs for a New World. Pieces on the program spanned nearly a century. Sans quibbles with intonation, some incohesive moments in ensemble numbers and, perhaps, an occasional voice-crack, all was rendered well and entertainingly enough for a mid-summer’s eve. The performances took place in the Florentine Opera Center’s repurposed performance space in a former factory on East Burleigh Street. The backdrop consisted of an open garage door with plants, trees and a setting sun. Several passersby strode into the background to enjoy the free music; a couple took to a spontaneous dance in a joyful moment in Moynihan and Huff’s duet, “The Girl I Love,” by the Gershwin brothers. That song is from 1924; the dancing couple were millennials. Such is the timelessness of great and moving music.

Richards and Peterson summarize a general social condition by using particular photographs of two flesh-and-blood teenagers. Knowing the teens’ stories, we empathize, though “knowing their stories,” is crucial here as the photo alone don’t quite capture the depths of their backstories. One wonders how much more impact an image of an individual has over a statistic or an inanimate symbol. How many unspeakB able truths go unnoticed because we have only numbers or artiB facts to confirm the occurrence of a traumatic event? Some might favor the weightiness and depth of documentary over more symB bolic communication: the power of the literal over the metaphoriB cal. Obviously, documentary and symbolic communication each have their place and will endure as separate tools for seeking answers. As for “Homely (part two),” it arrives at a still greater point about the purposes and methods of visual communication, and credit goes to Deb Brehmer. Curatorially she has taken the term “home,” dismantled and exploded it. Complex ideas naturally want to consolidate into stereotypes, and it’s the job of any socially minded creative to frustrate this tendency. “Home” may not be as high as some on a list of terms demanding semantic deconstruction, but it’s the process that’s the point. lthough it prides itself as the city of festivals, Milwaukee has gone without a key one for the last half decade. The city hasn’t had a showcase of African and African American culture on its lakefront since 2013, when the African World Festival held its final event at the Summerfest grounds. This year a new festival aims to fill the void: Black Arts Fest MKE, a daylong showcase of art and music on Saturday, Aug. 4 with headliners including MC Lyte, Tony! Toni! Toné! and blues legend Bobby Rush. Black Arts Fest Executive Director Patrice Harris spoke with the Shepherd Express about the event. Congratulations on the festival. It seems like it came together quickly. I think I started March 21 or 22, so late March, only about four and half months before the festival, although I had been involved in conference calls prior. Being the sole employee there’s a lot to do. But I’m passionate about special events, so even though it’s a lot of hours I really strongly believe this is a festival that the community has missed, and from what I’ve been told there is a very strong positive buzz. Everyone that I talk to— sponsors, volunteers, food vendors, whoever—they’re all like, “There’s such a good buzz!” You hear it on Jammin’ 98.3 every time you turn on the radio, because they’re our media partner. It’s in the papers, it’s online, so I’m excited that there’s a good buzz about it. Do you see Black Arts Fest as a continuation of the African World Festival, or is it its own thing? It’s a different organization. We have somewhat of a different approach, but with the same objective of celebrating African and African American culture and our heritage. While the black community is the primary audience we want to make it very inclusive to everyone else. There’s just a lot to celebrate and to learn. We have a very strong cultural aspect to it. We have a stage called the Cultural Expression Stage, with African dance, drumming, spoken work and a hip-hop performance, because that is part of our culture, too. So we’re trying to span culture, traditional to contemporary. One of our big initiatives is to introduce the culture to children in a creative and fun way. Discovery World is doing something looking at black inventors and modeling an activity after their inventions for kids. We’re going to have face painting
where kids can get different tribal designs. We’re also doing workshops with Danceworks and TRUE Skool. Danceworks is going to do tap, salsa and other rhythmic dances, where there’s a little performance in the beginning then the kids in the audience are brought up to learn some of the steps and to do a joint performance at the end, and TRUE Skool will do the same thing with hip-hop. What do you think distinguishes this festival from some of the other festivals at the Summerfest grounds? I don’t know that there’s anything fundamentally different. Every ethnic festival, we all support each other. In developing this festival, other festivals have been willing to answer questions and willing to help recruit volunteers, so it’s a very supportive community. Everyone has very strong partnerships and we don’t compete with each other. It’s really about showcasing all the different cultures in the city. I think they bring so much to the city. Everyone can go, whether they’re going to Black Arts Fest MKE or German Fest or Irish Fest or Indian Summer. It’s an opportunity not just to celebrate your own culture, but to reach beyond that and learn about other cultures. You know, race relations in the country have not been the best of late. Even locally, sometimes the way African Americans are portrayed is different from the way other races might be. So we really want people of all races to come out, so hopefully we can help dispel the perception that all African Americans are this way or that way, and show that our community is broader than what people might see in the news. But mostly we just want people to come out and have fun so that we can do it again next year! Do you see the festival expanding to multiple days in the future? That is our plan. Maybe next year will be one day and have a bigger footprint, or maybe it’ll be two days with the same footprint or a bigger one. But the goal is to continue to grow the festival until we achieve a threeday festival. Will that be next year? I’d venture to say not likely. But maybe in three years or four years that will happen. It just depends how much the community comes out to support the festival, because their support drives our ability to produce the event. [ FILM CLIPS ] The Darkest Minds PG-13 Following a plague, 10-year-old Ruby (Amandla Stenberg)—along with the 2% of humanity that manages to survive—exhibits special powers. Subsequently imprisoned in a secure camp, Ruby conceals her mind-control abilities in order to avoid a death sentence. Mandy Moore portrays a sympathetic camp doctor who conspires to place Ruby (now 16) with the outlaw League of Children. But when Ruby learns the league’s true agenda, she flees, along with Liam Stewart (Harris Dickinson) and two others. Having fallen in love, Ruby and Liam are pursued by ruthless bounty hunter Lady Jane (Gwendoline Christie). The Darkest Minds is the first of a four-book series from Alexandra Bracken; in casting charismatic Stenberg (Rue from The Hunger Games), Fox Studios scores a coup for the YA film franchise. Winnie the Pooh is re-imagined for this live-action romp. Now all “growed up” and living in London, Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is a workaholic husband and dad. Using a magic tree from the 100 Acre Woods as a portal, a walking, talking, stuffed Pooh bear arrives to rescue his old friend. Sweet and relentlessly sentimental, this chapter bets adults are eager to revisit gentle Pooh, bouncy Tigger and cautious Piglet with their own kids in tow. Judging by the film’s trailer, the strategy is honey. Oh Bother! (L.M.)
The Spy Who Dumped Me R When her missing boyfriend shows up claiming he’s a CIA agent saving the world, Audrey (Mila Kunis) and bestie Morgan (Kate McKinnon) join his cause. The film fancies itself a sisterpower action flick topped off with jokes. Generic set pieces fly thick and fast, but their overthe-top quantity lacks quality and prevents us from bonding with these thinly drawn characters. McKinnon delivers delightful facial expressions and body language, but real laughs are rare. Frequent accidents by the opposition mean the gals live to fight another day, but it isn’t the stuff to make us long for a sequel. (L.M.)

[ HOME MOVIES / NOW STREAMING ] Blue Desert
At some indeterminate point not too many years ahead of 2018, an artificial moon hangs in the sky and the world has become a digital web of experiences—none of them terribly satisfying to the young protagonist of Blue Desert. Better known as a multimedia artist, Brazilian director Eder Santos shot his flying car-future well within a tight budget and sets his protagonist off in a quest to transcend the false reality he’s trapped within.
Under Capricorn
Under Capricorn (1949) is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s least acclaimed American films. He was a bit out of his element in a costume drama set in 1831 Australia, as was his cast. Joseph Cotten plays Flusky, a scowling local magnet with a troubled past, and Ingrid Bergman costars as Henrietta, his neurasthenic wife. Filmed in gloriously unreal Technicolor, Under Capricorn includes some distinctive Hitchcock touches, including long tracking shots, spiderwebs of shadows and spritzes of humor.
Hamlet
The sullen prince was written as a man. However, Maxine Peake handles the part with power and confidence in a production by Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, captured on film from many angles. The original language is intact, yet the costumes are contemporary and the setting stark in its simplicity as staged by director Sarah Frankcom. The cast members sound entirely comfortable with their roles and with Shakespeare’s words. The state of Denmark is in good order.
“Sid Caesar: The Works”
The idea of comedy on television practically originated with Sid Caesar (19222014). The five-disc set “Sid Caesar: The Works” follows his career from his debut during the medium’s infancy in 1947 though his final public appearance, a 2014 tribute. Many of the skits from the early years are still funny, in part from Caesar’s sense of timing but also because of a team of writers that included Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Woody Allen. —David Luhrssen SHEPHERD EXPRESS

pair of female friends and fellow authors have hit the road to promote their new books and will swing through Milwaukee to visit Boswell Book Co. this week. The newest releases from award-winning journalists Jo Piazza and Glynnis MacNicol are sharp, intelligent tales focused on contemporary women with ambitious hopes for their respective futures. For MacNicol’s, whose work has appeared in publications ranging from playboy.com to The New York Times and The Guardian, No One Tells You This marks her foray into the realm of memoir as she recounts her 40th year with incisive wit and fantastic aplomb. Successful by modern standards, MacNicol nonetheless found herself struggling to find peace with her happy, albeit single, life as she entered her fourth decade. MacNicol unabashedly provides a blueprint for modern happiness as she reflects on her own life and those of her closest family and friends, while also probing into our society’s long-held notions that by her age, women are still largely expected to have found a partner and given birth. In her latest novel, Milwaukeean-by-marriage and best-selling author Jo Piazza follows the topical story of a woman who wants it all and finds the courage to risk public attack in an authentic attempt to make a difference. In Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win, Piazza has given readers a timely portrait of an American woman who, somewhat naively, decides to try her hand at politics. When Charlotte Walsh decides to run for the U.S. Senate, she doesn’t anticipate the toll it will take on her family, her marriage, her successful career, or on herself. A modern portrait of a career woman balancing multiple life responsibilities, Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win is well written and relatable. MacNicol and Piazza will appear at Boswell Book Co. at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3.

was downstairs and had also noticed the police with drawn pistols in their yard. More and more police arrived. Eventually, the woman appeared outside. Her husband arrived shortly thereafter, as had an unmarked police vehicle with a crew that unpacked an assault rifle. Then my friend was told to come down with his hands up. He complied, descending +9&!%+$-(%!#-+9!,)*(!3-%+)7%!3)-'+&.!$+!9-5;!89&! police, now numbering well over a dozen, %+(&$5&.!-'+)!+9&!9)*%&!$+!+9&!(&$.1!#-+9!:*'%! pointed. My buddy would later remark he had never had so many people in his one-bedroom apartment, even for an Oscar Party. At some point, nearly 40 minutes later, an “all clear” was called and the tactical operation ended; guns were re-holstered. There was a palpable sigh of relief. I was allowed to approach. As it turns out, someone had reported a noise that sounded like a gunshot coming from the house. Of course, no one thought to ask my friend when they called 911 if he had 9&$(.!$'1+9-':;!=>&-+9&(!9&!')(!+9&!7$'.7)(./%! #-,&!9$.;?!@&(9$3%!+&'%-)'%!#&(&!9&-:9+&'&.! due to the police shooting that had occurred only an hour before. But, watching the surreal scene unfold, with ever more police arriving with guns drawn, I kept imagining the worstcase scenario. My friend is diabetic and wears an insulin pump. Had he absentmindedly reached for it when he came down the stairs would it have been mistaken for a weapon? Fortunately, he is white and about as intimidating as a librarian. Still, despite the happy ending with no shooting, “ope” or otherwise, observing the events was traumatizing. avid Bromberg may be the most influential musician you’ve never heard of, but his impact on contemporary music is undeniable. The multi-instrumentalist singersongwriter has performed and recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, John Hiatt, Keb’ Mo’, Linda Ronstadt, Widespread Panic and a host of others. His seven-minute recording of Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles,” interspersed with tales of his own travels with Walker, initially catapulted him to extensive FM radio play in 1973, and he hasn’t looked back since. Touring at the back end of his 2016 release, The Blues, the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues (Red House Records), Bromberg and his band tap into the quintessential American genre, which also had a profound influence on the Philadelphia native. But expect familiar licks from country, folk, jazz and a variety of other types of music when he appears on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Shank Hall. It’s all “Americana” music to Bromberg, who is able to cite multiple musical muses for his unique guitar-playing style. “Doc Watson and Bill Monroe in bluegrass; Conway Twitty and George Jones in country; and Charlie Christian and Grant Green in jazz,” says Bromberg. “I have always been an omnivorous listener.”
But his primary inspiration was the Reverend Gary Davis, the blind Baptist minister, gospel singer and guitar player with whom Bromberg studied early in his career. Davis developed a unique picking style using only his thumb and index finger, while using all five fingers, thumb included, to play the chords on the neck of the instrument. “He was one of the greatest guitar players to walk the Earth, and if he had any antecedents, they never recorded, because I have never heard anything like him,” Bromberg says. Davis introduced Bromberg to gospel music, and the young guitarist started attending African American church services for inspiration. He found that inspiration less in the musicians themselves and more in the cadences of the gospel preachers. “In the middle of a sermon, a good preacher pauses so that you pay attention to what he’s going to say next,” Bromberg says. “That’s the way B.B. [King] and Albert [King] played, and that’s the way I play. I like to joke that the best notes I play are the rests.” The approach is similar in some classical jazz recordings—most notably those of saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. However, Bird brought a little more to the party than most of his contemporaries. “Charlie Parker didn’t use as many rests, but he used them beautifully,” Bromberg says. “He’d put notes that you’d never think of in a million years in the middle of a measure, and they served as rests. The other notes around them lost their importance.” David Bromberg became a major force on the Bromberg folk and blues circuit of the 1970s, but in 1980 assumed a self-imposed 20-year exile Shank Hall from touring and performing. Along with Saturday, his wife, artist Nancy Josephson, he opened Aug. 4, David Bromberg’s Fine Violins in Wilming8 p.m. ton, Del. “I was burned out from the road,” says Bromberg, who had studied to become a luthier prior to opening his shop. “What fascinated me was how some people could look at a violin or cello and tell where the instrument was made and by whom without seeing the label. I wanted to be able to do that.” Bromberg himself plays a little “country fiddle,” along with guitar, dobro and mandolin. Sideman Nate Grower will likely pick up the fiddle duties during Bromberg’s Milwaukee concert, performing along with bassist Butch Amiot, drummer Josh Kanusky, guitarist Mark Cosgrove and, perhaps, cornetist Peter Ecklund. Bromberg also will draw heavily from his 2016 album, which taps into the musician’s love of the old blues masters he first heard as a young man listening to 78 rpm records. “There’s a lot of different types of blues on that album,” Bromberg says. “We decided to start it off with a dyed-in-the-wool blues of Robert Johnson’s ‘Walkin’ Blues,’ but there’s also country blues with ‘Kentucky Blues’ and gospel-influenced blues with ‘Yield Not.’” Bromberg’s love for the genre is very evident in The Blues, the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues. Expect that love to generously spill over when the David Bromberg Quintet plays Shank Hall on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m. Twila Jean opens. David Blomberg

n 2015, Peter Vartanian moved from Milwaukee to Tasmania, Australia, to take a job at the Museum of Old and New Art as an invigilator. No, he wasn’t familiar with the word, either. It’s a British term that basically means “one who keeps watch,” and the job entailed watching over gallery visitors and a lot of telling them not to touch the art. During his time in Australia, he met a girl, fell in love, lobbied to get her a visa so she could come back to America with him and failed. He returned alone just weeks before the November 2016 election to a country that was about to feel very different from the one he left. Vartanian chronicles that journey on his new album under the moniker Fauxny, Invigilator. For all the sadness in his story—a tale of lost love and, in a sense, a lost country—the music on Invigilator is bright and exploratory—pop at its most jubilant. Vartanian’s voice channels Michael Jackson over the nimble R&B of “Sydney,” and when the production takes on a more modern, electronic edge on “Backseat Bogan,” it gives off echoes of The Weeknd. “Question Mark Spaces” exudes the joy of classic Stevie Wonder, while “Old Milwaukee,” with its beat-boxed rhythm and Auto-Tuned harmony vocals, plays like a contemporary reimagining of Paul Simon’s Graceland. If Invigilator’s jovial spirit seems out of step with the times, that’s by design. “I wanted to set a mood that reflected positivity rather than this general mood of anxiety,” Vartanian said. “When people listen to my music, I want them to realize the process of making it was fun. We were having a great time; there’s humor in it. That’s one thing I really took away from Australians. We’re very serious in America. We respond to humor or sarcasm skeptically, but Australians are much more willing to be self-deprecating.” Vartanian recruited a variety of collaborators to complete the album, among them, Old Earth’s Todd Umhoefer and Golden Coins’ Travis Whitty; vocalists N’Jameh Camara and Siân Ross Whitney; trumpeter John Rose and saxophonist Blaise Garza—the latter a Tasmania resident who currently plays with Violent Femmes. They lend a celebratory, communal vibe to an album that’s ultimately about the importance of looking beyond yourself. Especially on the record’s second half, Vartanian holds a mirror to himself and calls himself out. “It’s not too ‘woe is me,’ but I wanted to acknowledge my own flaws and poke fun at the typical privilege of being a white, straight male,” he says. Even the band name Fauxny, he says, is a reflection of his growth. It’s a play on Holden Caufield’s signature grievance in Catcher in the Rye, a book that spoke to Vartanian deeply when he began the project as a teenager a decade ago but has come to mean something different to him as an adult. “Holden Caufield was brought to life by his angst, which is why kids connect with that book when they’re younger,” Vartanian says. “He can spot what’s wrong with the world, but these days, I don’t relate with the character as much because he’s not taking steps to do anything about it. In 2018, my takeaway is that it’s not good enough to sit and complain about what’s fake and what’s real in this version of America. I feel like people need help, and they need guidance—I certainly needed guidance as a kid. And that’s why I do music. I’m doing music because I want to help people.” Fauxny’s Invigilator is streaming on Apple Music and Spotify.

Only lowercase, unhyphenated words are allowed in kaidoku, so you wonít see anything like STOCKHOLM or LONG-LOST in here (but you might see AFGHAN, since it has an uncapitalized meaning, too). SHEPHERD EXPRESS * 13 . 3 01
::FREEWILLASTROLOGY ::BY ROB BREZSNY LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Sometimes, I feel the past and the future pressing so hard on either side that there’s no room for the present at all.” A character named Julia says that in Evelyn Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited. I bring it to your attention as an inspiring irritant, as a prod to get you motivated. I hope it will mobilize you to rise up and refuse to allow your past and your future to press so hard on either side that there’s no room for the present. It’s a favorable time for you to fully claim the glory of being right here, right now. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I’m not an ascetic who believes all our valuable lessons emerge from suffering. Nor am I a popnihilist who sneers at pretty flowers, smiling children and sunny days. On the contrary: I’m devoted to the hypothesis that life is usually at least 51% wonderful. But I dance the rain dance when there’s an emotional drought in my personal life, and I dance the pain dance when it’s time to deal with difficulties I’ve ignored. How about you, Virgo? I suspect that now is one of those times when you need to have compassionate heart-to-heart conversations with your fears, struggles and aches. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Do you absolutely need orchids, sweet elixirs, dark chocolate, alluring new music, dances on soft grass, sensual massages, nine hours of sleep per night and a steady stream of soulful conversations? No. Not really. In the coming days, life will be a good ride for you even if you fail to procure those indulgences. But here are further questions and answers: Do you deserve the orchids, elixirs and the rest? My answer is yes, definitely. And would the arrival of these delights spur you to come up with imaginative solutions to your top two riddles? I’m pretty sure it would. So I conclude this horoscope by recommending that you do indeed arrange to revel in your equivalent of the delights I named. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Don’t try to steer the river,” writes Deepak Chopra. Most of the time, I agree with that idea. It’s arrogant to think that we have the power to control the forces of nature or the flow of destiny or the song of creation. Our goal should be to get an intuitive read on the crazy-making miracle of life, and adapt ourselves ingeniously to its ever-shifting patterns and rhythms. But wait! Set aside everything I just said. An exception to the usual rule has arrived. Sometimes, when your personal power is extra flexible and robust—like now, for you—you may indeed be able to steer the river a bit. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Dear Astrologer: Recently I’ve been weirdly obsessed with wondering how to increase my levels of generosity and compassion. Not just because I know it’s the right thing to do, but also because I know it will make me healthy and honest and unflappable. Do you have any sage advice? — Ambitious Sagittarius.” Dear Ambitious: I’ve noticed that many Sagittarians are feeling an unprecedented curiosity about how to enhance their lives by boosting the benevolence they express. Here’s a tip from astrologer Chani Nicholas: “Source your sense of self from your integrity in every interaction.” Here’s another tip from Anais Nin: “The worse the state of the world grows, the more intensely I try for inner perfection and power. I fight for a small world of humanity and tenderness.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Time does not necessarily heal all wounds. If you wait around passively, hoping that the mere passage of months will magically fix your twists and smooth out your tweaks, you’re shirking your responsibility. The truth is, you need to be fully engaged in the process. You’ve got to feel deeply and think hard about how to diminish your pain, and then take practical action when your wisdom shows you what will actually work. Now is an excellent time to upgrade your commitment to this sacred quest. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The questions you’ve been asking aren’t bad or wrong. But they’re not exactly relevant or helpful, either. That’s why the answers you’ve been receiving aren’t of maximum use. Try these questions instead. 1. What experience or information would you need to heal your divided sense of loyalty? 2. How can
SHEPHERD EXPRESS
you attract an influence that would motivate you to make changes you can’t quite accomplish under your own power? 3. Can you ignore or even dismiss the 95% of your fear that’s imaginary so you’ll be able to focus on the 5% that’s truly worth meditating on? 4. If I assured you that you have the intelligence to beautify an ugly part of your world, how would you begin? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A scuffle you’ve been waging turns out to be the wrong scuffle. It has distracted you from giving your full attention to a more winnable and worthwhile tussle. My advice? Don’t waste energy feeling remorse about the energy you’ve wasted. In fact, be grateful for the training you’ve received. The skills you’ve been honing while wrestling with the misleading complication will serve you well when you switch your focus to the more important issue. So are you ready to shift gears? Start mobilizing your crusade to engage with the more winnable and worthwhile tussle. ARIES (March 21-April 19): I predict that August will be a Golden Age for you. That’s mostly very good. Golden opportunities will arise, and you’ll come into possession of lead that can be transmuted into gold. But it’s also important to be prudent about your dealings with gold. Consider the fable of the golden goose. The bird’s owner grew impatient because it laid only one gold egg per day; he foolishly slaughtered his prize animal to get all the gold immediately. That didn’t work out well. Or consider the fact that to the ancient Aztecs, the word teocuitlatl referred to gold, even though its literally translation was “excrement of the gods.” Moral of the story: If handled with care and integrity, gold can be a blessing. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus socialite Stephen Tennant (1906-1987) was such an interesting luminary that three major novelists created fictional characters modeled after him. As a boy, when he was asked what he’d like to be when he grew up, he replied, “I want to be a great beauty.” I’d love to hear those words spill out of your mouth, Taurus. What? You say you’re already all grown up? I doubt it. In my opinion, you’ve still got a lot of stretching and expansion and transformation to accomplish during the coming decades. So yes: I hope you can find it in your wild heart to proclaim, “When I grow up, I want to be a great beauty.” (P.S. Your ability to become increasingly beautiful will be at a peak during the next 14 months.) GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Manage with bread and butter until God sends the honey,” advises a Moroccan proverb. Let’s analyze how this advice might apply to you. First thing I want to know is, have you been managing well with bread and butter? Have you refrained from whining about your simple provisions, resting content and grateful? If you haven’t, I doubt that any honey will arrive, either from God or any other source. But if you have been celebrating your modest gifts, feeling free of greed and displeasure, then I expect at least some honey will show up soon. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don’t worry your beautiful head about praying to the gods of luck and fate. I’ll take care of that for you. Your job is to propitiate the gods of fluid discipline and hard but smart work. To win the favor of these divine helpers, act on the assumption that you now have the power and the right to ask for more of their assistance than you have before. Proceed with the understanding that they are willing to provide you with the stamina, persistence and attention to detail you will need to accomplish your next breakthrough. Homework: What was your last major amazement? What do you predict will be the next one? Testify at freewillastrology.com. Bad Dates
F
aith Pugh of Memphis, Tenn., had a date to remember on Saturday, July 14, with Kelton Griffin. Her casual acquaintance from high school “just out of the blue texted me and asked me to go out,” Pugh told WREG-TV. They took her car and stopped at a gas station, where Griffin asked Pugh to go inside and buy him a cigar. But while she was inside, “He drove off. I came outside, and my car was gone,” Pugh said. Shortly, Pugh received a text from her godsister, telling her Griffin had just asked her out on a date. He picked up the godsister in Pugh’s car and headed to a drive-in movie. “He didn’t even have any money,” Pugh said. “She actually paid their way to get in the drive-in, just so I could get my car back.” Pugh alerted the police to the car’s location, and they arrested Griffin for theft of property. “I hope he’s in jail for a long time,” Pugh said.
Up, Up and Away On Thursday, Jan. 25, 71-year-old Alan J. Abrahamson of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., went for his regular pre-dawn walk to Starbucks. What happened on the way stumped police investigators for months, reported The Washington Post, and at last on July 13, they made their findings public. Images from a surveillance camera show Abrahamson walking out of his community at 5:35 a.m., and about 30 minutes later, the sound of a gunshot is heard. Just before 7 a.m., a dog found Abrahamson’s body lying near a walking path. Police found no weapon, no signs of a struggle; he still had his wallet and phone. Investigators initially worked the case as a homicide, but as they dug deeper into the man’s computer searches and purchases over the past nine years, a theory developed: Abrahamson had tied a gun to a weather balloon filled with helium, shot himself, and then the gun drifted up and away to parts unknown. A thin line of blood on Abrahamson’s sweatshirt indicated to police that “something with the approximate width of a string passed through the blood on the outside of his shirt,” the final report says. As for the balloon, investigators said it would likely have ascended to about 100,000 feet and exploded somewhere north of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean.
Millennial Night a Home Run It’s time once again for Minor League Baseball promotion fun and games! This time, however, the Montgomery Biscuits (of Alabama) managed to tick off a whole generation of baseball fans. The Biscuits announced a “Millennial Night” for their game being held on Saturday, July 21, featuring participation ribbons just for showing up, a napping area, selfie stations and lots of avocados, reported Fox News. While some Twitter users thought the promotion insensitive (perhaps, unwittingly, adding to the event’s raison d’être), others were more philosophical. Dallas Godshall, 21, said, “More than targeting Millennials, it’s sort of targeting older generations who like to make fun of Millennials.” Pitcher Benton Ross weighed in: “If it’s insensitive, maybe they should just have thicker skin.”
Silent But Deadly The Austin American-Statesman reported that on Sunday, June 17, RV park neighbors and longtime adversaries Ryan Felton Sauter and Keith Monroe got into a heated dispute about an undisclosed subject. Later that day, Monroe saw Sauter leaving Monroe’s RV and asked him why he had gone into it without his permission. Sauter cryptically replied, “You’ll see why.” Going inside, Monroe spotted a rattlesnake, which was strangely missing its rattles, and used a machete to kill it. It turned out that Sauter had bitten off the snake’s tell-tale rattlers in an event to silence it, so it wouldn’t warn Monroe of its presence until it was too late. Sauter has been charged with deadly conduct and criminal trespass.
You’re Putin Me On A Russian man who has covered more than 90% of his body (including his eyeballs) with black-ink tattoos underwent surgery on Saturday, July 14, at Jardines Hospital in Guadalajara, Mexico, to remove his penis, testicles and nipples because, as he sates, “they spoil my body art.” Adam Curlykale, 32, of Kaliningrad, an albino, was diagnosed with cancer and started the tattooing process 12 years ago to cover scars left behind from the disease. “I always knew that I was different from the rest of society,” Curlykale told The Daily Mail. “My favorite color, for example, has always been gray, in different tones, and that’s why my current skin color is graphite.” He plans to finish the process by inking what’s left of his un-tattooed skin. © 2018 ANDREWS MCMEEL SYNDICATION A U G U S T 2 , 2 0 1 8 | 33
