hen she’s asked about where Wisconsin stands among states on voter suppression, Anita Johnson doesn’t hesitate. “Oh, Wisconsin—it’s one of the 10 worst. Easily.” Johnson ought to know. She’s the Wisconsin Voter ID Coalition Coordinator for the national group VoteRiders, which helps individuals obtain photo identification so they can vote, offers voter education and forms coalitions to combat voter suppression. Its motto: “Votes Count. Be Counted.” Voting is the one time every American is truly equal, whether we’re Donald J. Trump, Kim Kardashian or a high school senior casting their first vote after turning 18. Johnson believes strongly in that principle. She has been involved in organizing and election protection issues throughout her career, including serving on the Wisconsin Election Administration Council for the Government Accountability Board that oversaw elections. “My joy comes from making sure people know they can go to the polls and have an impact and know what they need to vote,” says Johnson. “I eat, sleep and breathe this. It’s all about helping people.”

Requiring photo IDs, along with many of the other changes, most no7 tably disenfranchises people of color, students, the elderly, the disabled and poor Wisconsinites. Studies also show a disproportionate impact on women, and new information highlights disen7 franchisement of transgender individuals.

Wisconsin’s photo ID law for voting was called the strictest in the nation when it passed in 2011, and it arrived without sufficient funding for voter education. It passed even though voter impersonation, the type of fraud it was designed to prevent, is more statistically rare than a person being struck by lightning. So, it isn’t surprising that VoteRiders’ Voter Stories page gets many of its testimonials on voting problems from people in Wisconsin. Anita Johnson has helped numerous individu7 als get free state IDs, as well as offering presenta7 tions on voting at community groups, churches and elsewhere. One case that stands out in her mind was helping a 55-year-old homeless veter7 an get his free state photo ID. Locating his birth certificate was problematic, so, after a first rejec7 tion, he was told to “recreate all 55 years of his life.” They assembled every record and piece of information from his schools, relatives’ names, addresses, jobs, etc. and returned. Again, after another two-month wait, he got rejected. It came down to discovering the name on his birth cer7 tificate had been mispronounced by the midwife and written incorrectly, so, knowing that, they were finally able to get him a state ID. That crusade took them !"#"$%&'$()!1#8-,+# cases, she notes, come down to knowing the law and ensuring it is followed. That and some qual7 ity time at the local Division of Motor Vehicles. Johnson stresses that, by being armed with information on voting requirements, the peti7 tion process and the ability to register online—a “little known fact,” she says—the process can be smooth. She’s also working hard to resurrect Souls to the Polls. Johnson is currently working with 70 Milwaukee churches on increasing the African American vote with neighborhood can7 vassing and planned marches to polls on the two early voting Sundays before the Tuesday, Nov. 6, election. In 2016, she says, voter suppression, includ7 ing photo ID requirements, “played a huge part in stopping people from voting.” But she is optimistic that 2018 midterms will have more African Americans in Milwaukee out voting than even the presidential race did two years ago. “There will be an increase,” she predicts. “People are starting to realize what’s happening here.” *'&&"$(%+(%!)",)"-."/,-"!!01'&0# #

/*01"(()+2%345%6*($7% 89::7$;;)*+%!"'()'; Here are some of the key forms voter suppression takes in Wisconsin.
#Closing DMV stations or reducing hours in state budgets. John Oliver, on the Feb. 14, 2016, episode of his show, “Last Week Tonight,” mocked a DMV in Sauk City that was only open on the fifth Wednesday of the month (2016 had just four months with five Wednesdays). He pointed out that, in 2012, fewer than half of the state’s DMVs were open every business day. #Making it difficult to obtain a free state photo ID that can be used for voting. From a badly underfunded voter education campaign to false information given out at DMV facilities to customers requesting free state photo IDs, a federal judge ruling on various Wisconsin election laws called the efforts “a wretched failure.” #Imposing limits on early voting, student IDs and residency. Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature have passed laws curtailing early voting to weekdays between set hours at only one location per municipality and nearly tripled the residency requirement from the current 10 days. The One Wisconsin Institute and Citizen Action were successful in having those restrictions overturned in court by proving they made it harder for Democrats to vote. #Replacing the non-partisan Government Accountability Board with the Elections Commission, followed by several rounds of cutting the commission’s staff, including those that help local election clerks. The Walker administration has left important election security positions vacant despite criticism. #Purging voter databases to undo a voter’s registration without their knowledge. #Gerrymandering. While done to give partisan advantage, gerrymandering voting districts can also make would-be voters feel that their vote doesn’t matter when, in fact, the opposite is true. The only way to overcome partisan redistricting—as has happened twice in 2018 special elections—is for more people to vote. In a Rolling Stone article on Wisconsin election rigging, former attorney general Eric Holder, founder of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, said gerrymandering, unregulated dark money and strict voter ID laws should make Americans worried about our democracy. “We could end up with a system where a well-financed minority that has views inconsistent with the vast majority of the American people runs this country.” #A method employed by dictators around the world: simply refuse to call an election—as Walker refused to do with two special elections in vacant seats—until forced to do so by a court ruling. Groups tracking the voter suppression in Wisconsin used in this list include the Brennan Center for Justice, American Civil Liberties Union’s Voting Rights Project and One Wisconsin Institute.
!"#$%&'()*+%,*-.
Massive amounts of dark money, gerrymandered districts and other voting obstacles can all be overcome if everyone does one thing: vote! Or, in the words of former President Barack Obama: “Don’t boo. Vote!” Here are a few other ideas of how to fight back against rigged Wisconsin elections. #Help spread factual information on photo ID and other voting requirements. VoteRiders offers services, including voter wallet cards, a Milwaukee-based voter hotline (414882-8622) and resources to put on a voter clinic. #Make sure people know there is no specific “voter ID” that exists as such; rather, voter identification is made through photo IDs such as drivers’ licenses and state IDs. #Post on your social media streams and let friends or colleagues know when early voting starts. #Help friends and neighbors get registered to vote and get a free state ID card if they lack a Wisconsin drivers’ license or one of the other permissible forms of identification. #Start the voting registration process in Wisconsin online at myvote.wi.gov. #Share your voting story on social media, a blog post, via letters to the editor of your local newspapers and to your elected officials. #Sign the American Civil Liberties Union’s petition to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act. #Learn more about getting a free Wisconsin ID card on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website at wisconsindot.gov and the petition process (even if you don’t currently possess a birth certificate). You can also call the DOT’s voter hotline at 844-5881069. #Find out how badly Wisconsin does compared to other states from the Brennan Center for Justice at brennancenter.org, as well as additional information on preventing cyber-attacks or on Twitter under #ProtectTheVote. New in Milwaukee !"#$%&'(()%*#%&)+',*)-'% .)-/%$01'2)-%3"0)+!),*45% '*6,%)77%8)&&0-'-9%80"0 ::BY LACEY MUSZYNSKI Several established restaurateurs have opened new spots in Milwaukee this month, including Mediterranean, Mexican-inspired breakfast, Pakistani food and a pie bakery. Plus, a new pizzeria comes to Greenfield. Alas, there are also a few closings to mention.
Fiesta Café
A new breakfast, brunch and lunch spot has opened in the former Wayward Kitchen building on South First Street. Fiesta Café is owned by Rosa-Isela Real and Valdemar Escobar, who also own Fat Valdy’s and the Chicken Palace restaurants. They serve American and Mexican cuisine, including chilaquiles ($12); Florentine crepes ($11) with spinach, mushrooms and hollandaise; and churro French toast ($12) for breakfast. Lunch items include a chicken avocado salad ($9) with citrus chipotle dressing and sandwiches and burgers like the Monterrey club ($12). Fresh juices, a coffee bar, beer, wine and cocktails, including a Southwest bloody ($10) garnished with a beef stick, are available.

Pita Palace Mediterranean Cuisine
The owners of Al-Yousef Supermarket, which is well known for its small restaurant, have opened a counter-service, standalone restaurant. Pita Palace serves much of the same Mediterranean and Middle Eastern menu with some additions. Appetizers are mostly classics, like falafel (six pieces for $2.99) and foul mudamas ($5.99), a dip of mashed fava beans, garlic and lemon. Sandwiches like beef shawarma ($5.99) come in Lebanon or pita bread with pickles, onions, tomatoes and tahini. Entrees come as a platter with rice, hummus and Jerusalem salad, topped with items like beef shish kabob ($12.99), lamb chops ($15.99) and chicken kafta kabob ($10.95).

Shah Jee’s
Popular Downtown lunch spot Shah Jee’s has opened a second location on the East Side in the former Dogg Haus space (with plans to open two other locations soon as well). The menu at the new location will be the same as the Jefferson Street location, and the food will be prepared in that location as well. The largely vegetarian menu includes chana masala ($7), aalu palak ($8) with spinach and potatoes, saag paneer ($8) and chicken masala ($9). Unlike the original location, the Downer spot is open for lunch and dinner. There is a small seating area, but the owners expect to do a lot of takeout for UW-Milwaukee students and employees.

SmallPie
The owner of Honeypie and Palomino has opened a pie shop in a former commercial garage in Bay View. SmallPie serves a variety of sweet and savory pies and other baked goods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pies are individual servings and include a rotating mix of fillings. On the savory side ($6) are Wisconsin cheeseburger pies, Cuban pork with shredded pork, ham and pickles, and curry vegetable. Sweet pies ($5-$7) come in hand-pie varieties or mini pies in flavors like chocolate cream, peach and apple. Side salads, a few sandwiches and bagels are also available.

Uncle Paulie’s Brick Oven Pizzeria
A pizzeria has opened in the former Mad Dog Saloon in Greenfield. Uncle Paulie’s owners installed a huge, rotating, brick pizza oven imported from Italy that can hold up to 14 pizzas at a time. It turns out 12-inch pizzas on a thin, yeasted crust with some charring. The My Cousin Vinny ($15.50) includes ricotta, sausage, meatballs, roasted red peppers and basil, while the bianco ($14) is a white pie with garlic sauce, fresh mozzarella, mushrooms, olive oil and shaved parmesan cheese. There are also appetizers like antipasto ($16.50) with cured meats, cheeses and garnishes, pasta entrees from meat lasagna ($14) to linguine carbonara ($12) and a Friday night fish fry ($13.50).

CLOSINGS
After reopening a couple of years ago, Crawdaddy’s in West Allis has, for a second time, called it quits. Louise’s Downtown has chosen not to renew its lease and has closed. And, finally, The Love Shack on Seeboth has closed for a rebranding, which is planned to be revealed later this year.

Getting it Right at El Rey ::BY JAMIE LEE RAKE
SHEPHERD STAFF
In decades past, counters where hearty meals were prepared and served quickly regularly figured in the floor plans of pharmacies, department stores and other retailers with heavy foot traffic. That tasty tradition lives on in Milwaukee’s four El Rey Hispanic supermarkets. They claim to be the “home of the original Mexican taco” and offer customers the choice of 14 animal proteins and its house brand corn tortillas. If that classic street fare won’t satisfy your craving, a plate dinner may. At the 40-year-old chain’s flagship (916 S. Cesar E. Chavez Drive), the meats in my beefsteak and chicken dinner were cheerily grilled before my eyes. The plate brimmed with the customary refried beans with white cheese topping, along with rice and shredded iceberg lettuce flecked with juicy red tomato plus a lime wedge and several fresh avocado slices. Washed down with pineapple or orange juice or the delicate cinnamon rice sweetness of horchata, this is rib-sticking fare to start or end a round of grocery shopping. Arrive before noon for a choice of eight breakfast entrees. And there are plenty of tables for parents with children and others for whom a diner counter isn’t ideal. Other Milwaukee taquerias may be trendier and have lengthier menus, but El Rey’s Taco Locos gets the basics of Mexican eating efficiently, but pleasingly, right.

Since forming Imperfect Produce in August 2015, Simon, along with co-founder Ben Chesler and chief marketing officer Aleks Strub, have diverted 25 million pounds of produce from being wasted. They’ve grown Imperfect Produce to have a presence in the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Chicago, Indianapolis and, now, in Milwaukee. Brock said their Chicago launch last winter showed that eating healthier and reducing food waste wasn’t just a West Coast phenomenon.
“We very quickly identified Milwaukee as a good fit,” she said. “There’s a vibrant food scene there and a healthy food culture and lot of farms. The model is similar to community-supported agriculture (CSA), but unlike a CSA that focuses on just one farmer or region, Imperfect Produce’s main focus is on reducing waste. They have partnered with the Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative and dozens of farmers in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. Imperfect Produce’s main Midwest warehouse is in Chicago. They have a facility in Milwaukee where the boxes are packed and shipped. They employ drivers here to deliver the boxes. So far, the company is focused on a pilot area Downtown, and they’re looking to expand to more zip codes and neighborhoods. “If you sign up, and we’re not in your area yet, stay tuned—we’ll try to get there soon,” Brock said. ::SPORTS Should the Brewers Offer Jhoulys Chacín a LongTerm Deal? ::BY KYLE LOBNER
I
t’s been an interesting path across seven organizations since 2014 for Jhoulys Chacín, but he’s followed it to one of the best seasons of his career. He entered the week leading the Milwaukee Brewers in nearly every pitching category, including innings pitched (157), strikeouts (129) and ERA (3.61, best among
Brewers with more than 65 innings). According to FanGraphs, only Josh Hader has been more valuable among Brewers pitchers this season. Last week, !"##$%&' (%")$' *+' ,-./ )*, listed Chacín as the Brewers’ most indispensable player. Despite all of this, he’s in line to take a pretty significant pay cut in 2019. Despite a very good 2017 season in San Diego, Chacín was not highly sought after this past winter. The Brewers got what might have been one of the off-season’s best bargains when they signed him to a two-year, $15.5 million contract in December with no incentives and no options. Furthermore, they frontloaded the deal. Chacín received a $1.5 million signing bonus and an $8 million salary for 2018. That left just $6 million for him to receive next season. Chacín and Ryan Braun are the only two 2018 Brewers that are under contract for 2019 and slated to receive less than they’re making this season (Braun’s salary drops from $20 million to $19 million). Across baseball, it’s very rare to see frontloaded contracts. Lorenzo Cain’s annual salary is set to increase each year in his recent five-year deal, for example, even though his production is likely to decrease as he ages.
Mr. Durability Chacín, however, likely has some time left before he begins to show his age as he’s only 30-years-old and has been a model of durability over the last two seasons. He’s made 60 starts since Opening Day 2017—second most in all of baseball (Justin Verlander has 61). Even moving from pitcher-friendly Petco Park in San Diego to Miller Park couldn’t dampen his statistics, as his ERA (3.89 to 3.61) and home run rate (0.9 per nine innings to 0.8) have both gone down despite making half his starts in an environment that favors hitters. Furthermore, Chacín is the anchor of a Brewers pitching staff that features a fair number of question marks. Among the team’s veterans, Jimmy Nelson hasn’t pitched for Milwaukee at all this season, Zach Davies has struggled to overcome injury issues, Chase Anderson has shown some inconsistency and Junior Guerra is going to turn 34 in January. Behind them, the Brewers have yet to see how Corbin Burnes will handle a return from the bullpen to the starting rotation, Brandon Woodruff has yet to establish himself as a regular member of a starting staff, and Luis Ortiz and Jorge Lopez are both no longer in the organization.
Given all these factors and the fact that Chacín has been productive and seems happy in Milwaukee, it likely makes sense to approach him about a possible contract extension sometime soon. Tearing up the last year of his contract and replacing it with something along the lines of four years and $50 million would allow Chacín to remain in a place where he’s comfortable and give the Brewers an opportunity to keep him around through his age-34 season. A deal like this would mark something of a shift in recent practice for the Brewers, who currently do not have any pitchers on long-term contracts. Only Chacín, Chase Anderson and Matt Albers have guaranteed money for 2019 at this point. The Brewers and their fans are all too familiar with the risk of long-term commitments to pitchers after Jeff Suppan, Randy Wolf and Matt Garza’s deals all ended poorly. They are, however, almost certainly going to feel some pressure to hit the market in search of pitching once again this winter. They could (and perhaps should) start by shopping at home and locking up their current ace for the long term. Comment at !"#$"#%&#'$%#!!()*+. n

ur city embraces Broadway, and we are honored to serve our community through the arts,” says Marcus Center for the Performing Arts President and CEO Paul Mathews. “We hope patrons will join us throughout the year for one or more of these amazing shows.” Indeed, the Marcus Center’s Broadway Series offers a wide selection of musicals, “diverse, engaging and something for everyone,” adds the Marcus Center’s Heidi Lofy, “including four shows making their Milwaukee debuts.” The Broadway Series brings national and international touring companies to Uihlein Hall each season, including some of the newest shows as well as revivals of musical theater classics. The series offers seven different productions, an additional show described as a “season option” (meaning it’s a Broadway show but outside the company’s subscription package). Season subscribers will also have first access to a production of the international sensation, Hamilton, which comes to Milwaukee as part of the Marcus Center’s 2019-2020 season. “This year, we have several returning shows, including hits such as The Book of Mormon and beloved classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof and The King and I,” says Lofy. “The new productions of these classic shows will give Milwaukee fans the show they love a fresh look.” The Marcus Center last produced Phantom four years ago, Fiddler seven years ago, and The King and I was last performed some 18 years ago. In addition to returning classics, the Marcus Center’s Broadway Series brings such new shows as the critically acclaimed Come From Away, a heartfelt, true story about airplane travelers grounded (and, for some time, stranded) in Newfoundland in the wake of the mass clearing of the skies after 911. “We also have the first national tour of Anastasia making its way to our city this season,” Lofy says. “This classic story comes to life with songs from the animated film, along with additional songs composed by the awardwinning duo of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.” (top row, left to right) Quentin Oliver Lee in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ PHOTO BY MATTHEW MURPHY; Monica L. Set in 1595, Something Rotten! (Oct.16-21) is a musical comedy that tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom—brothers who are desperate to come up with a hit play. When a soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing and acting all in the same work, the brothers take the advice to heart and set about trying to create the world’s first bona fide musical. In doing so, they are set against their principle rival—William Shakespeare. With a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick, and music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick, Something Rotten! premiered on Broadway in 2015 where it enjoyed a 742-performance run. The Broadway Series’ contribution to the holiday season is Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason’s Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical (Nov. 20-25). The classic children’s book-cumanimated television show comes to vivid life in a musical adaptation featuring songs planted firmly in many of our brains since childhood, like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” and “Welcome Christmas.” How the Grinch Stole Christmas premiered in Minneapolis in 1994 and made its way to Broadway in 2006. The latter engagement is notable because Grinch became the first musical to be performed 12 times a week in Broadway history. Mismatched Mormon missionaries sent halfway around the world to sell their religious wares comprise the central characters of The Book of Mormon (Jan. 2-6), which The Washington Post called “the kind of show that restores your faith in musicals.” The team of Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone conjured this musical wonder, which premiered on Broadway in 2011 and has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals of all time. Director Bartlett Sher brings a fresh, authentic vision to Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s masterpiece, Fiddler on the Roof (Feb. 12-17). With beloved songs like “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” Fiddler’s original Broadway run (opening in 1964) was the first in musical theater history to surpass 3,000 performances. It won nine Tony Awards and, in 1971, spawned a hugely popular major motion picture. Cameron Mackintosh’s remarkable new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (March 6-12) comes to Milwaukee as part of a brand new North American tour. It boasts a production that includes new special effects—including, of course, the musical’s legendary chandelier. Phantom includes stand-out numbers like “Music of the Night,”“All I Ask of You” and “Masquerade” and will be performed by a formidable 52-member cast and orchestra. Two dissimilar worlds collide in Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s 1951 classic The King and I (April 9-14). The Marcus Center’s production is centered on the musical’s recent, reworked Broadway reiteration, which won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Revival. The King and I, the great team’s fifth collaboration, ran on Broadway for nearly three years, making it the fourth longest-running musical there at the time. Come From Away (May 7-12) with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is set in the week following 9/11 and tells the true story of what happened as 38 planes were forced to land in tiny Gander, Newfoundland. The Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning musical presents a cathartic reminder of the capacity for human kindness to triumph over hatred. Anastasia (July 23-28) transports audiences to the waning days of imperial Russia as well as the exhilaration of 1920s Paris. Darko Tresnjak directs the book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally set to a lush score. According to the director, Anastasia retains “six songs from the movie [upon which it’s based] and adds 16 new numbers. We’ve kept the best parts of the animated movie, but it really is a new musical.” All shows take place in Uihlein Hall of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 929 N. Water St. For tickets, call 414-273-7206 or visit marcuscenter.org.

::THISWEEKINMILWAUKEE FRIDAY, AUG. 31 Boone Row @ Boone & Crockett
Just like Austin’s annual South by Southwest music festival, Cream City’s annual Milwaukee Rally attracts spin-off parties that often have better lineups than the official event. One of the best of them, Boone & Crockett’s Boone Row, returns for another three-day lineup at Boone’s new location on 818 S. Water St. Taking full advantage of the venue’s roomy new compound, it’ll feature vendors in the parking lot and both indoor and outdoor stages featuring live music including Lumerians (from Oakland, Calif.) and a slew of Milwaukee rock bands including Slow Walker, Calliope, Tigernite, Sex Scenes, Mississippi Cactus and Moon Rats, who will celebrate the vinyl release of their new album, Highway Lord, on Friday night. (Through Sunday, Sept. 2.)
THURSDAY, AUG. 30 Milwaukee Rally @ multiple locations
Milwaukee’s loudest end-of-summer tradition returns for another marathon Labor Day weekend. Once again thousands of Harley-Davidson riders will take over the city for five days of events spread across the area code, including concerts, block parties, group rides, demos, factory tours, bike shows and parties celebrating Harley’s 115th anniversary. The Harley-Davidson Museum will be especially busy, with a host of activities and attractions and free concerts from headliners like The Record Company (on Friday, Aug. 31) and alt-country favorites Supersuckers and rockabilly legends The Reverend Horton Heat (on Saturday, Sept. 1). For the complete list of official events, visit milwaukeerally. com. The city’s Third Ward neighborhood will also get in on the action this year a Saturday block party called Bikes on Broadway, featuring two stages of music from acts including Boo Bradley, Sweet Sheiks and Jay Edward Blues Band, as well as local food and drink and Daytona-style bike parking.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 1 Bryce Vine @ Lucid Light Lounge, 9 p.m.
After years working his way up the music industry’s ladder, pop-minded New York rapper Bryce Vine scored his first hit last year with the single “Drew Barrymore,” a posh, EDM-accented track aimed at the club crowd. It’s fitting, then, that Vine’s first Milwaukee appearance will be at one of the local clubs that’s kept that track in regular rotation: Lucid Light Lounge, where he’ll play a show sponsored by the local pop station Energy 106.9.
FernFest @ The Ivy House and Fernweh, 4 p.m.
Walker’s Point welcomes a new bar and music venue this weekend. The Ivy House at 906 S. Barclay, formerly the home of The Point and Sangria Bar, will introduce itself to the city with a four-day grand opening celebration called FernFest featuring food trucks, cocktails, lawn games and daily live music from acts including Milwaukee Airwaves, Matt Hoff, Kyle Feerick, Asher Gray and The Eddie Butts Band. The venue, which will host live music and private events, also features a patio bar called Fernweh that will be open to the public seasonally. (Through Sunday, Sept. 2.)
Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! @ The Riverside Theater, 7:30 p.m.
Nobody on NPR seems to be having more fun than the cast of “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!,” a weekly news quiz hosted by playwright and actor Peter Sagal in which listeners play by phone. Each week a panel of humorists and journalists—including regulars like Amy Dickinson, Paula Poundstone, P.J. O’Rourke and Mo Rocca—guide the contestants through the games between chuckles and inside jokes, struggling to contain their laughter. The grand prize for one lucky listener is a modest one: a personalized voicemail from one of the show’s cast members. The show returns to Milwaukee for this live recording.
FRIDAY, AUG. 31
Milwaukee Motorcycle Film Festival @ Oriental Theatre
What better time for a motorcycle film festival than during the Milwaukee Rally? In conjunction with the Harley-Davidson 115th anniversary festivities, Milwaukee Film has curated this mini-festival featuring screenings of four films, including the greatest motorcycle movie ever made: the Marlon Brando classic The Wild One. Other movies include the cult classic Psychomania, presented on a rare, technicolor, 35mm print; the gritty dirt-bike gang drama 12 O’Clock Boys; and a screening of the documentary Sugar and Spade featuring a Q&A with the filmmaker and guests as well as a live accompaniment by guitarist Rocco DeLuca. Big Gig BBQ @ Summerfest Grounds, noon-7 p.m.
Laborfest isn’t the only big gathering at the Summerfest grounds this Labor Day weekend. Summerfest’s annual Big Gig BBQ returns for its third year at the south end of the festival grounds this year with a barbecue rib competition that will give cookout enthusiasts the chance to compete for a $5,000 cash giveaway. The event is free and features music from blues, rock and country bands including Wildside, Crossfire, Spitfire Rodeo, The Blues Disciples and Christopher’s Project. SHEPHERD EXPRESS

MONDAY, SEPT. 3 Laborfest @ Summerfest Grounds, noon
For many people, Labor Day is just a day off, one more chance to grill and take in the last gasps of summer. But for union members and activists, it’s more than that: It’s also a chance to celebrate that contributions that laborers and their unions have made to society while championing for better working conditions. Each year workers and their families celebrate the cause at Laborfest, a free party and rally at the Summerfest grounds featuring food, music and children’s entertainment. It kicks off at noon and runs through 5 p.m. following an 11 a.m. parade from Zeidler Square leading to the grounds.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 5 Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman @ The Riverside Theater, 8 p.m.
Like many classic rock bands, Yes have gone through some lineup changes over the years that have essentially created dueling versions of the same group. This trio features three former members of the band who were all integral to Yes’s sound: singer Jon Anderson, keyboardist Rick Wakeman and guitarist Trevor Rabin (who played with the band during their commercial peak in the ’80s). Titled “Quintessential Yes,” their current tour celebrates the 50th anniversary of the British prog-rock institution.
Neko Case w/ Thao (of the Get Down Stay Down) @ The Pabst Theater, 8 p.m.
Neko Case first made a name for herself with her early albums of shadowy alt-country, seemingly recorded during the darkest hours of night, but the singer has brightened her sound considerably on more recent albums like 2009’s Middle Cyclone, a feisty record informed by her side gig playing with the power-pop band The New Pornographers, and 2013’s The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. Like that predecessor, her latest record, Hell-On, highlights her remarkable voice and everexpanding ambition. It’s one of her most collaborative records yet, featuring contributions from k.d. Land, Laura Veirs, Mark Lanegan, Eric Bachmann and members of The New Pornographers, as well as Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John, who co-produced.
Thousands of works. At least one youí ll love. All sorts of art for every sort of taste.

White Privilege Hearing about racial issues on the news nearly every day is one thing, but what happens when those very same issues come face-to-face with you? Marquette theater arts student Malaina Moore invites you to join the nationwide conversation and consider how interactions with students, teachers, parents, friends and even total strangers are often influenced by race and how the simple factor of a person’s skin color can lead to very different ways of experiencing the world. Moore was profiled in the Shepherd Express earlier this year in a Spring Arts Guide feature that identified six successful artists who emerged from Milwaukee’s many arts education programs and who work in various artistic media. At 20, she was the youngest such person we discussed. Moore was a Rufus King High School student when she discovered Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival; White Privilege is her newest play. Muskie Love “Back by popular demand” is often not the case, but it certainly does apply to Northern Sky Theater’s 2018 production of Paul Libman and Dave Hudson’s Muskie Love. Indeed, this is the fifth season since 2004 in which the light-hearted fish tale has appeared on the Door County theatre company’s roster. A contemporary take on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Muskie Love features rival Northern Wisconsin fishing guides, both single and happy that way, who become ensnared in the schemes of their well-meaning friends and families bent on hooking them—to each other. (John Jahn) Aug. 31-Oct. 20 in Door Community Auditorium, 3926 Highway 42, Fish Creek. For tickets, call 920-854-6117 or visit northernskytheater.com.

The Politics of Joseph Friebert’s ‘Life in Art’ ::BY SHANE MCADAMS
I
was midway through Dan Kaufman’s book, The Fall of Wisconsin: The Conservative Conquest of a Progressive Bastion and the Future of American Politics, when I visited the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) to see the current retrospective of Joseph Friebert, “A Life in Art” (through Oct. 7). Kaufman’s text considers what happened to Wisconsin’s rich history of progressive politics and social activism. A visual investigation of this history might easily begin on one of the bleak Milwaukee avenues of Joseph Friebert’s early paintings—works that began a painting career ever-informed by leftist politics and a deep connection to Milwaukee’s working class. The exhibition unfolds chronologically in MOWA’s Hyde Gallery, leading off with early paintings shaped directly by the social and political circumstances of the Great Depression. In 1939’s Two Lines, One Job, hopeful laborers queue up for a potential opportunity. Its dark tonal palette offers formal as well as a literal unity; a unity in paint, of cause and spirit. The faceless bodies coalesce into a single husky volume, and, as it happens, a perfect metaphor for the movement and politics with which Friebert so sympathized. A painting from a year later, Back of Fourth and State, pans outward from that line of faceless men, providing a wider angle on the workers’ city. But still, even without the personalized drama, it remains a less-than-sanguine place: a landscape of industrial buildings rising like tombstones in drab earth-tones, interrupted only by the actions of a solitary figure working in the foreground lot and a lonely wisp of blue smoke from a stack in the distance. It’s the urban equivalent of tumble weeds in the desert or creaking gates on the prai-
rie; somehow desolate and foreboding at once. When Friebert painted these works, the reputations of Regionalists like Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton were already well established. Their output as artists, like Friebert’s, was tied to the mythology of the American worker, only, many social realist painters, Benton especially, tended toward aggrandizement; qualities that would sow the seeds of their decline after World War II when art turned inward, and the Social Realist style became forever associated with Soviet propaganda. It was a turn that Friebert’s work, always soulful and subjective, avoided. This abiding sensitivity is most palpable in his later figural work. Paintings from the 1960s, like Human Folly and Human Carnival, confront the figure with a throbbingly melancholy touch. With subtle traces of the social turmoil of the ’60s, they distill the tumult of the moment into a universal, timeless condition. Dan Kaufman’s book—and another from several years back, What’s the Matter with Kansas by Thomas Frank—question why the sympathies of the American worker took a right turn away from their own best interests. Read those texts for deeper sociopolitical inferences and conclusions, but the visual evidence of the transformation can be seen by doing a simple comparison of the aforementioned Benton and Friebert. Where Benton glorifies, Friebert humanizes. One might wonder what’s wrong with glorifying a subject, especially one as unassailable as the American laborer. Nothing, necessarily, but glorification tends to dispense with both truth and trauma. A passing thought about the glory of the working man had me musing about contemporary country music while I was looking at

Friebert’s work. An off-topic flight, maybe, but one that sweetly corroborates the sweepingly broad narrative that ties all these stories together. Anti-establishment work songs like “Sixteen Tons” have given way to a culture of anthems of complicity and opiated resignation in populist America—Lee Bice’s 2015 hit, “Drinking Class,” for example—but there’s no shortage of others. Listen if you have any doubts. By heroizing the noun (the agents and actors), we risk forgetting the verb (the struggle itself.) I hesitate to say we’re at a social crossroads in 2018; every generation believes it invented sex, after all. But something has changed significantly, especially in our own humble state, leaving us wondering about how labor politics mutated and where went our social solidarities and collective empathies. Joseph Friebert’s work might not locate them, but it’ll give you a hint about where they once were—and might be again—if humanity can limp across that intersection.

“I started in the late-’90s with computer art. While I was touring, it game me something to do in all those crazy hotels you have to stay in on the road,” Beatles drummer Ringo Starr once said. Gallery 505 opens an exhibit and sale featuring Starr’s hand-signed, limitededition artworks that coincides nicely with the musician’s upcoming concert at the BMO Harris Pavilion (Sept. 8). The art show is free and open to the public, and all works on display are available to purchase, with 100% of Starr’s proceeds going to the Lotus Foundation. [ FILM CLIPS ] A.X.L. PG
This second release in as many weeks (see Alpha) spotlights our affection for our canine best friends. While riding his motorcycle through a military research area, Miles (Alex Neustaedter) discovers a damaged top-secret, robotic dog. Created to protect soldiers, the Bengal tiger-sized artificial intelligence is named A.X.L.—a colorful character programmed to bond with its human counterpart. Having bonded with Miles, A.X.L. is a loyal protector, while Miles, in conjunction with computer savvy Sara (Becky G), joins A.X.L. to evade his abusive military researchers. A.X.L. easily keeps pace as Miles capably maneuvers his motorbike over and around obstacles, taking advantage of the terrain to outwit their military pursuers. A kid-friendly film, A.X.L. certainly presents excellent toy merchandising opportunities. (Lisa Miller)
Crazy Rich Asians PG-13
Adapted from the bestseller by Kevin Kwan, this romantic comedy is seen from the perspective of American-born Rachel Chu (Constance Wu). A New Yorker and the longtime girlfriend of Nick Young (Henry Golding), Rachel agrees to be his date for the Singapore wedding of Nick’s best friend. Rachel is unaware, prior to their trip, that Nick’s family is fabulously wealthy, so she is ill-prepared for the disapproval of Nick’s protective, imperious mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). Raised by a single mother, there is evidence Eleanor’s concerns are valid in the difficult marriage of Nick’s favorite cousin, Astrid (Gemma Chan). Despite distractions of extreme opulence (Nick’s cousin’s wedding costs $40 million dollars!), the film is firmly grounded in family traditions and the chemistry between its principal characters. (L.M.)
The Happytime Murders R
When Brian Henson signed on to direct Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Banks and Maya Rudolph in a live-action/human-puppet film, he embraced exposing the seamy side of puppet sex addicts and prostitutes. Being the son of Muppet creator Jim Henson, the experience must have been equal parts confusing and amusing. In a universe where puppets and humans coexist, McCarthy portrays detective Connie Edwards, a human teamed with an oversexualized puppet detective to solve the murders of puppets from a popular children’s TV show. Complex human-puppet friendships are further complicated because the human actors here must walk two-foot wide planks in order to accommodate puppeteers beneath the sets. (L.M.)

This closeup look at the underside of urban Colombia lacks a plotline but is a sequence of monologues and dialogues from the downtrodden. They are in jail or in squalor, cooking or selling cocaine and trying to get by. Director Chris Gude composes his frames carefully with faces often half in shadow against hard surfaces. Stylistically, he achieves a kind of contemporary film noir in color. The terse dialogue is almost poetic in its compression.

pright bassist Johanna Rose and guitarist Carl Nichols didn’t set out to be in a folk duo. As Nickel&Rose, the two Milwaukee singer/songwriters cut their teeth playing jazz and blues clubs across Europe, before gradually settling into a rootsier sound. The more time they spent playing folk festivals, though, the less comfortable they became with what they saw. “It’s almost all white men,” Nichols says. “If you look at the lineup of any folk or Americana festival, you see that they use that term to associate it with a really narrow thing, which is either this Tom Petty sort of hard rock with acoustic guitars, or weird Southern rock. It’s rock bands, basically, but they’re billed as folk. It’s all about playing festivals now. People are making records that can be played at festivals.” Nichols both calls out and grieves for the genre on the title track of the group’s new EP, Americana. “If I wasn’t standing on this stage, would you wonder why I was here,” he sings, “Would you ask me if I was lost or if I came to sell you pills?” He’s singing from personal experience. As one of the few black performers in the scene, he says, “I’ve gone to so many shows where people just assume that I couldn’t possibly be there for the music, or that I must be there for a drug deal. “To me the song is much more of a personal statement than just a general criticism of folk and Americana,” he continues. “I really wanted to capture the experience of being a black entertainer, where I get these moments where I’m in front of a microphone and my opinion is heard—maybe not appreciated, but heard. And I think about myself and so many other people who aren’t heard. So I realized I that it’s my responsibility to say something meaningful, because people are listening to me who otherwise wouldn’t be.” The song doesn’t shy away from the obvious irony of black voices being shut out of Americana: Folk was created from black music. “It really touches on that history and the people who are cut out of the history of folk,” Rose says. “Historically all this music comes from black artists, but because of how record companies market things they’re cut out of the history of things. When you look at the history of country and blues, black and white artists were playing similar music, but record companies called white people doing it country and black people blues. Americana is a more recent term, but when people think of folk or Americana, they’re usually thinking of a white dude with an acoustic guitar and a banjo.” The rest of the EP isn’t as overtly pointed as its mournful title track. “Moving Pianos” is a sweet love song with a cheerful, old-timey spirit, while “Life Goes On” celebrates the hard work that goes into making a relationship last, but Rose sees the whole EP as of a piece. “‘Americana’ may be a political song, but it is still personal,” she says. “All of these songs have this common thread of loss, and so I think ‘Americana’ fits in with the other songs Nickel&Rose because it is talking about loss. Stylistically Company Brewing there are common threads, too. All the songs are more traditional and less experimental Saturday, Sept. 1, than the folk we’ve done in the past, so it’s 8:30 p.m. a little bit of a tribute, but also a little bit of a declaration that we can do this, too.” Nichols notes another irony about the song “Americana”: It was written as a kind of kiss-off to the genre—“a nail in the coffin,” he says—but it ended up further ingraining the duo in that world. “I feel like there’s more pressure on us now that we’re pointing out the racial issues,” Nichols says. “We always have to be performing our best, because we can’t be perceived as the band that’s complaining that we’re not doing as well because of race. We have to be as good as any other band, because people are going to be looking at us like, ‘Well, you’re talking about it. Now you have to back it up.’” Nickel&Rose play an EP release show Saturday, Sept. 1, at Company Brewing at 8:30 p.m. with King Courteen and Grasping at Straws.

Harold López-Nussa Un Día Cualquiera (MACK AVENUE RECORDS) Although the present administration tries to roll back the normalization of relations between Cuba and the U.S., cultural exchange continues. Un Día Cualquiera is the second release on a North American label by Havana’s Harold López-Nussa. The talented young pianist has one foot in jazz and the other in his country’s traditional rhythms, continuing a dialogue that started when jazz began. The spin he gives his fusion is entirely contemporary and touches on the West African roots of jazz and Cuban music. He also inherited a sense of pianistic romanticism that was part of Cuba’s European conservatorybased music education. He could find his way around an etude if he’d like. Un Día Cualquiera was recorded at the Boston NPR affiliate’s studio. —Morton Shlabotnik Harold López-Nussa will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the UWMilwaukee Fine Arts Recital Hall. Advance tickets for $15 can be purchased online through haroldtrio.eventbrite.com. Tickets at the door can be purchased for $25.

Each of the 26 letters of the alphabet is represented in this grid by a number between 1 and 26. Using letter frequency, word-pattern recognition, and the numbers as your guides, fill in the grid with well-known English words (HINT: since a Q is always followed by a U, try hunting down the Q first). Only lowercase, unhyphenated words are allowed in kaidoku, so you won’t see anything like STOCKHOLM or LONG-LOST in here (but you might see AFGHAN, since it has an uncapitalized meaning, too). - 24 5 04 12 SHEPHERD EXPRESS
::FREEWILLASTROLOGY ::BY ROB BREZSNY VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran loved the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. “Without Bach, God would be a complete second-rate figure,” he testified, adding, “Bach’s music is the only argument proving the creation of the Universe cannot be regarded as a complete failure.” I invite you to emulate Cioran’s passionate clarity, Virgo. From an astrological perspective, now is an excellent time to identify people and things that consistently invigorate your excitement about your destiny. Maybe you have just one shining exemplar, like Cioran, or maybe you have more. Home in on the phenomena that in your mind embody the glory of creation. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I foresee the withering of a hope or the disappearance of a prop or the loss of leverage. This ending may initially make you feel melancholy, but I bet it will ultimately prove beneficent—and maybe lead you to resources that were previously unavailable. Here are rituals you could perform that may help you catalyze the specific kind of relief and release you need: Wander around a graveyard and sing songs you love; Tie one end of a string around your ankle and the other end around an object that symbolizes an influence you want to banish from your life. Then cut the string and bury the object; Say this ten times: “The end makes the beginning possible.” SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “If a man treats a life artistically, his brain is his heart,” wrote Oscar Wilde. I’ll translate that into a more complete version: “If a person of any gender treats life artistically, their brain is their heart.” This truth will be especially applicable for you in the coming weeks. You’ll be wise to treat your life artistically. You’ll thrive by using your heart as your brain. So I advise you to wield your intelligence with love. Understand that your most incisive insights will come when you’re feeling empathy and seeking intimacy. As you crystallize clear visions about the future, make sure they are generously suffused with ideas about how you and your people can enhance your joie de vivre. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “My tastes are simple,” testified Sagittarian politician Winston Churchill. “I am easily satisfied with the best.” I propose that we make that your motto for now. While it may not be a sound idea to demand only the finest of everything all the time, I think it will be wise for you to do so during the next three weeks. You will have a mandate to resist trifles and insist on excellence. Luckily, this should motivate you to raise your own standards and expect the very best from yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Russian playwright Anton Chekhov articulated a principle he felt was essential to telling a good story: If you say early in your tale that there’s a rifle hanging on the wall, that rifle must eventually be used. “If it’s not going to be fired, it shouldn’t be hanging there,” declared Chekhov. We might wish that real life unfolded with such clear dramatic purpose. To have our future so well-foreshadowed would make it easier to plan our actions. But that’s not often the case. Many elements pop up in our personal stories that ultimately serve no purpose. Except now, that is, for you Capricorns. I suspect that in the next six weeks, plot twists will be telegraphed in advance. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Would it be fun to roast marshmallows on long sticks over scorching volcanic vents? I suppose. Would it be safe? No! Aside from the possibility that you could get burned, the sulfuric acid in the vapors would make the cooked marshmallows taste terrible, and might cause them to explode. So I advise you to refrain from adventures like that. On the other hand, I will love it if you cultivate a playful spirit as you contemplate serious decisions. I’m in favor of you keeping a blithe attitude as you navigate your way through tricky maneuvers. I hope you’ll be jaunty in the midst of rumbling commotions. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): People will be thinking about you more than usual, and with greater intensity. Allies and acquaintances will be revising their opinions and understandings about you, mostly in favorable ways, although not always. Loved ones and not-so-loved ones will also be reworking their images of you, coming to al-

tered conclusions about what you mean to them and what your purpose is. Given these developments, I suggest that you be proactive about expressing your best intentions and displaying your finest attributes. ARIES (March 21-April 19): In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, our heroine encounters a talking caterpillar as he smokes a hookah on top of a tall mushroom. “Who are you?” he asks her. Alice is honest: “I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.” She says this with uneasiness. In the last few hours, she has twice been shrunken down to a tiny size and twice grown as big as a giant. All these transformations have unnerved her. In contrast to Alice, I’m hoping you’ll have a positive attitude about your upcoming shifts and mutations, Aries. From what I can tell, your journey through the Season of Metamorphosis should be mostly fun and educational. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Juan Villarino has hitchhiked over 2,350 times in 90 countries. His free rides have carried him over 100,000 miles. He has kept detailed records, so he’s able to say with confidence that Iraq is the best place to catch a lift. Average wait time there is seven minutes. Jordan and Romania are good, too, with nine- and twelveminute waits, respectively. In telling you about his success, I don’t mean to suggest that now is a favorable time to hitchhike. But I do want you to know that the coming weeks will be prime time to solicit favors, garner gifts, and make yourself available for metaphorical equivalents of free rides. You’re extra magnetic and attractive. How could anyone could resist providing you with the blessings you need and deserve? GEMINI (May 21-June 20): One of the big stories of 2018 concerns your effort to escape from a star-crossed trick of fate—to fix a longrunning tweak that has subtly undermined your lust for life. How successful will you be in this heroic quest? That will hinge in part on your faith in the new power you’ve been developing. Another factor that will determine the outcome is your ability to identify and gain access to a resource that is virtually magical even though it appears nondescript. I bring this to your attention, Gemini, because I suspect that a key plot twist in this story will soon unfold. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Potential new allies are seeking entrance to your domain. Existing allies aspire to be closer to you. I’m worried you may be a bit overwhelmed; that you might not exercise sufficient discrimination. I therefore urge you to ask yourself these questions about each candidate: Does this person understand what it means to respect your boundaries? What are his or her motivations for wanting contact with you? Do you truly value and need the gifts each person has to give you? Everyone in the world has a dark side. Can you intuit the nature of each person’s dark side? Is it tolerable? Is it interesting? LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): While a young man, the future Roman leader Julius Caesar was kidnapped by Sicilian pirates. They proposed a ransom of 620 kilograms of silver. Caesar was incensed at the small size of the ransom—he believed he was worth more—and demanded that his captors raise the sum to 1,550 kilograms. I’d love to see you unleash that kind of bravado in the coming weeks, Leo—preferably without getting yourself kidnapped. In my opinion, it’s crucial that you know how valuable you are, and make sure everyone else knows, as well. Homework: What pose would it be a relief for you to drop? How are you faking, and what could you do to stop? Freewillastrology.com.

Too Much of a Good Thing
A
fter 16 years, neighbors of “Eva N.” in Sturovo, Slovakia, have gotten relief from her particular brand of torment, reported the BBC. From morning until night, the woman had played a fourminute aria from Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata over and over—with her speakers on full blast. “The whole street is suffering,” complained one resident. At first, the music-lover played the music to drown out a neighbor’s barking dog, but continued the practice until Aug. 6, when she was arrested for harassment and malicious persecution. If found guilty, she could face between six months and three years in prison.
Digital Golf In Plymouth, Mass., on Aug. 17, a friendly game at Southers Marsh Golf Club turned ugly when Derek Harkins, 46, and an unnamed 57-year-old man got into a brawl on the 18th hole. But you gotta hand it to Harkins: The Patriot Ledger reported that he pointedly ended the fight by biting off the other man’s finger up to the knuckle, according to Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri. The victim was taken to the hospital, but his finger could not be reattached. Harkins was arrested at the scene and charged with assault and battery, mayhem and disturbing the peace.
A Slippery Send-Off The happiest place on Earth couldn’t work its magic on Aug. 15 when a worker at nearby Harvest Power fell into a vat of oil and grease from Walt Disney World. The plant in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., recycles the resort’s food waste, then converts it into renewable energy and fertilizer. John Korody, 61, and another worker were emptying the contents of a semitruck into a vat when Korody slipped on a grate and fell into the vat. His coworker tried to pull him out, but the fumes overtook them
both, and Korody slid farther in, according to The Washington Post. The Reedy Creek Fire Department responded, but Korody was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baaaaad to the Bone An unnamed Irish teenager’s hiking outing became fodder for any number of bad punsters after the boy was hit by a falling sheep while walking in Northern Ireland’s Mourne Mountains. The sheep fell from a crag on Aug. 17 and landed on the boy, who was treated for injuries to his head, neck, back, abdomen and legs. “It is believed the sheep was uninjured and left the scene unaided,” reported Metro News. Punny comments on a social media post made by the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team included: “Mutton have been looking where he was going,” “I bet he’s feeling a little sheepish,” and “Ewe want to be careful on the mountains!!”
Bet He Was Pissed On an Aug. 17 flight between Chicago and Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, a 24-year-old American man, who was reportedly unprovoked, urinated on a 50-year-old Japanese man sitting two rows behind him. The younger man had consumed at least four glasses of champagne and one cup of sake before the incident, police told Japan Today, and claimed not to remember what he had done. He was restrained aboard the remainder of the flight and turned over to police in Tokyo.
Teenage Mutant Lightning Rod Phoenix teenager Josiah Wiedman, 13, was walking home through a park in early August with a friend when he was struck by lightning, “sending me nine feet into the air, making me bounce on my head and then flip over to my back,” as he told ABC News. Afterward, doctors put Josiah into a medically induced coma for three days, and when he came to, he made a speedy recovery. His mother, who didn’t expect her son to survive, dubbed him “Superman,” and, indeed, Josiah said he’s waiting for his special powers to kick in. “I haven’t felt my powers yet, but I will soon,” he said.
I’ll Have the Double Cartilage with Extra Tissue, Please Moses Lanham, 57, fell 18 feet from a rope in gym class when he was 14 years old. As a result, the Michigan man is now known as “Mr. Elastic.” Lanham has double cartilage and extra tissue in his knee joints, hips and ankles, which makes it possible for him to turn his feet 180 degrees backward and walk. In fact, he tells Metro News, walking with his feet pointed behind him is more comfortable than walking normally. “I’ve heard one other (person) can turn his feet, but not walk,” Lanham said of his fame. “When I perform this in front of people, I love the reactions,” he said. “One time, I had a person throw up after I turned my feet around.” © 2018 ANDREWS MCMEEL SYNDICATION A U G U S T 3 0 , 2 0 1 8 | 33

Looks like I’ll be at least a week late, just like every single goddamn homework assignment I ever got while serving time at Our Lady Of Pain That You Kids Are Going Straight To Hell But Not Soon Enough, what the fock. But I’d like to quickly point out to our juvenile rocket scientists that you got one hell of a lot to learn, compared to if you had to go to school 2,000 years ago. Hey, how hard could geography have been back then? For crying out loud, they only had like about four countries, I kid you not. Piece of focking cake. And history? Those people were born yesterday compared to what you all got to memorize these days. English Lit? Mighty slim reading list, wouldn’t you say? You young people of the modern age sure got your work cut out for you’s, you betcha. I recommend heartily that you brush your teeth and stay in school. A successful future can be yours as long as you don’t fock it up. Amen. I got to go, but to our nomadic visitors who rode into town on a bicycle with a motor attached, remember that New York may be The City that Never Sleeps, but Milwaukee is The City that Always Sweeps. So please, before you hightail it out of town remember to clean up after yourselves. Heck, even I might welcome you back ’cause I’m Art Kumbalek and I told you so. SHEPHERD EXPRESS
