Dixie Stampede …

The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette

Celebrates its 20th season!

By Linda Burlingame

2014 is the 20th season for Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction! The show features an amazing all-new “Roman Ride of Fire.” The show is full of equestrian excitement with 32 magnificent horses. Audiences love the horsemanship, the buffalo stampede (six tons of American bison!), “Rumble in the Treetops” lumberjack relay, beautiful pageantry and romance, and a grand patriotic finish. The show is showcased in a friendly rivalry between North and South with barrel racing and other fun competitions. Dolly Parton said, “I want my guests to have some jaw-dropping equestrian excitement this year.” The Dixie Stampede owner went on to say, “Part of the fun at my Dixie Stampede is giving the audience the unexpected, it’s just amazing!” This year’s “Roman Ride of Fire” highlights a

special type of trick riding featuring two horses moving side-by-side with the rider standing astride both horses. Audiences will be stunned as the rider jumps the horses through the ring of fire with precise timing while the horses gallop around the arena. I think dinner is truly delicious. Creamy vegetable soup; hickory- smoked pork loin; a tender, whole rotisserie chicken; yummy homemade buttermilk biscuits; corn on the cob; and a flaky apple turnover for dessert, all prepared fresh there in the Dixie Stampede kitchen. “Kids of all ages” enjoy the “Rumble in the Treetops” competition between the lumberjacks. The final leg of the competition is really fun, when the burly fellows square off in an old-fashioned log roll. Last man off is the winner! Logging is

#1 Hits of the 60’s … Step back in time to remember

March/April 2014 • Page 5

The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette

By Linda Burlingame

#1 Hits of the 60’s is a high-energy show that takes the audience on a nostalgic musical journey through the 60’s. Motown, the British invasion, California Surfin’, the Age of Aquarius — and there are 100 costume changes. The bell-bottoms, the psychedelic colors — the hairdos! There are gorgeous gowns, too, like the black, shimmery dresses and boas for Stop! In the Name of Love. New costumes for the 2014 show have been designed by the designer who works and travels with the Radio City Rockettes.

Also new this year … a bit more 50’s music, and audiences will see the transition from black and white to “Technicolor!” The show is well staged and moves at a good clip. The cast does

more than 90 #1 and Top 40 songs. There’s fun audience participation, like the quiz: is this a 60’s song or a 50’s song? Along with the musical history of the decade, video clips show historically noteworthy events. The first moon landing, first heart transplant … John, Martin and Bobby. Poignant, fun, the audience experiences every mood. This is the 12th season for #1 Hits of the 60’s.

The “high school” segment is an audience favorite. The “plot” is the upcoming school dance. Who has a date? “Johnny,” in his black leather jacket with the collar turned up, thinks all the girls want to be his date.

MUSIC COMEDY DANCING VARIETY SHOW

www.claycoopertheatre.com 417-332-2529

But what about “Irving” and his nerdy outfit? The girls are stressing. Oh, and the “school marm!” The songs and dances tell much of the story. And you’ll never guess who ends up singing Born To Be Wild! The “swim,” “locomotion” and the “mashed potato” … so many dances and songs!

Just think — Dance to the Music, It’s My Party, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling, Johnny Angel, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, Leavin’ on a Jet Plane, songs from the Beach Boys, Joan Baez, The Ronettes, The Hollies, Chiffons, Simon & Garfunkel, The Supremes! It was an incredible era of music. So take a step back in time, for a groovy good time. The 1960’s … a remarkable decade, in so many ways. Step back in time, to remember.

NAIA Championship, Keeter Center, Ralph Foster Museum

By Linda Burlingame

On March 12–18, College of the Ozarks (C of O) once again hosts the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. The series is a 32-team, single-elimination tournament with the champions of Division II conferences, regional tournaments and at-large berths. Many of you are in town just for that reason, WELCOME! (see cofo.edu/NAIA) Whenever you’re on campus be sure to visit The Keeter Center. On your next trip, think about staying there: accommodations are wonderful, featuring elegantly rustic décor, much of it handcrafted locally. All Mabee

Lodge rooms include fireplace, private balcony and many other amenities; suites include in-room breakfast and turndown service featuring fresh cookies from the bakery and milk from the dairy. Dobyns Dining Room there is superb for lunch and dinner. And the bakery and coffee bar is all you need for breakfast! There are always interesting displays at The Keeter Center, often highlighting distinguished guest speakers as well as students’ work and trips with military veterans. Meeting facilities are outstanding, too. Once again College of the Ozarks orchids have received top honors. Stu-

dents at “Hard Work U” care for the renowned McDade Orchid collection and take the flowers to competitions each year. This February 1, the orchids taken to the Orchid Society of Greater St. Louis’ Annual Show at the Missouri Botanical Garden won the highest designation given by the American Orchid Society. (find out more at cofo.edu) The greenhouses at College of the Ozarks are also workstations for C of O students. The whole family will enjoy visiting the campus. Interesting highlights include the greenhouse, mill, fruitcake and jelly kitchens and the W. Alton Jones Campus Dairy, where students milk 60 Holstein, Guernsey, and Jersey cows. Farming and the use of farm-raised products has always been part of the College’s 106year heritage, allowing students to

work, instead of pay, for their education. The Ralph Foster Museum, dedicated to Ozarks history and culture, houses thousands of objects of fine arts, archaeology, history, firearms, antiques, numismatics, geology and mineralogy. It’s interesting on many levels and “kids” from “nine to ninety” find it fascinating. Often referred to as “The Smithsonian of the Ozarks” it is a three-story museum awarded Rural Missouri magazine’s Readers’ Choice for “Best Museum in Missouri.” The magazine notes the museum houses “one of the Midwest’s finest firearms collections.” The museum is named in honor of radio pioneer and philanthropist Ralph D. Foster. Enjoy your time on the campus of College of the Ozarks!

King’s Castle Theatre … The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette

Lineup includes new show

By Linda Burlingame

Every year visitors to Branson look forward to the lineup at King’s Castle Theatre, which includes a new show for 2014 — Dublin’s Irish Tenors and the Celtic Ladies. Five fabulous Irish lads and four fine Irish lassies team up to present a show filled with Irish classics, opera,

pop and swing music, timeless folk ballads that appeal to all ages. Talented performers, excellent costumes, good staging and lighting create an outstanding show. Songs include Cockles and Mussels, Danny Boy, Loch Lomond, Ticket to Ride, Hey Jude, You Raise Me Up, We Are the Champions and more favorites. You don’t have to be Irish to love this ensemble. (But it’s nice to be Irish!) New Jersey Nights returns to the King’s Castle Stage in 2014. This show plays around the world to sold out theaters in locales like England, See KINGS CASTLE, Page 12

Andy Williams Moon River Theatre has a full line-up for 2014. This year (March 28 through October 4) audiences at Moon River will be dazzled by worldrenowned illusionist Rick Thomas. He has been entertaining audiences in Las Vegas for 15 years, and critics have called it a “perfect show for the whole family.” Thomas weaves dance and music with his magic for a “seamless spectacle.”

The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette

Full line-up for 2014

The Redneck Tenors are on stage at Moon River Theatre May 2 thru December 6. These crazy but totally talented tenors tickle your funny bone as they entertain you with a wide variety of music.

The Lettermen, the legendary trio that hit the charts in 1961 with The Way You Look Tonight, take the stage October 7 - 18 … you’ll love the ‘way they sing tonight’!

The Lennon Sisters have 8pm shows October 2022, and 27-29, as well as starring with The Osmonds in the Andy Williams Christmas Show.

The Osmonds American Jukebox Show, one of my favorite shows, comes to the stage October 23-25 and 30-31. As a band and as solo performers, they have recorded more than 200 albums and sold more than 100m copies; they have 59 gold and platinum records. The show includes their unforgettable hits, from One Bad Apple to Love Me for a Reason. It’s a “little bit country” … and a whole lot o’ rock ‘n’ roll! Irish singing sensation Daniel O’Donnell once again brings his Christmas show to Moon River, this year with select dates November 1 – 22. Sha Na Na Rockin’ Christmas

is new to Branson this year, November 24 thru December 6 at Moon River. This group celebrates the music and memories! Their Christmas show is an entertaining combination of their doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll standards, as well as classic rock ‘n’ roll Christmas songs and traditional holiday tunes.

The legendary Andy Williams Christmas Show features The Osmonds and The Lennon Sisters November 1 thru December 6. Singers and dancers, the reindeer … the incredible Moon River Orchestra … be sure the Andy Williams Christmas Show is on your Christmas list! And enjoy all the extraordinary shows this year at Moon River Theatre!

Mickey Gilley ...

The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette

Celebrating 25 years in Branson

“ Live and on stage!” makes Mickey Gilley fans very happy! And there are good surprises in store for audiences and fans this season, as Gilley celebrates his 25th season in his theater in Branson, MO … stay tuned! Gilley has had 17 #1 Hits and 30 Top 10 Country Hits. When Gilley appeared in Urban Cowboy, which also starred John Travolta, he experienced his first real taste of national recognition and popularity beyond Country Music. He still calls his Grammy Award-winning band the Urban Cowboy Band. Gilley’s backup singers are The Urbanettes. Penny Cardin and Stephanie Hall sound wonderful singing with Gilley,

singing their duets, and solos. Gilley first “played” Branson in 1987. He talks about those first shows, when Jim Thomas brought him to Branson to perform at the Roy Clark Celebrity Theater. Thomas booked Gilley for afternoon and evening shows — during the week! Gilley said that would never work and tried to cancel. But his shows sold out, and the rest, as they say, is history. It was 1990 when he made the “major decision” to get off the road and open his own theater here. He went from having two buses, an 18-wheeler and a King Air airplane, to having a theater with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, concessions and gift shop, a

staff that includes lighting and sound technicians, management, box office, ushers and more. Gilley still does a lot of shows “on the road” but he’s never regretted his 1990 decision. Gilley’s show is an extraordinary blend of his classic hits and other of his favorite songs, with some fascinating stories about his career. (Just in case anyone wondered, my favorite Gilley songs are two of his ballads, Talk to Me and You Don’t Know Me!) Gilley’s Texas Café next door is terrific for lunch, dinner or late night. Gilley says, "Restaurants are entertainment. People want to be comfortable and have a good time." (Check in for Karaoke!) When Gilley’s show opened in 1990, it soon became one of Branson’s most popular and it still is, after all these years! Happy Anniversary, Mickey Gilley!

part of Branson’s history. More than a century ago, cut logs were floated down the White River to Branson, then taken off the river and made into railroad ties for the Transcontinental Railroad. The dinner show experience is set in a beautiful 35,000 sq. ft. arena. The arena floor is a unique combination of clay, river sand, and gravel to create a surface that is dust-free and easy on the horses’ legs. The horses are gorgeous. Arrive early to enjoy the Horse Walk! The horses are exquisitely groomed and gorgeous, their stalls elegant. There are Appaloosas, Belgian draft horses, quarter horses, paints … all magnificent. The pre-show in the Carriage Room is entertaining, too, the beginning of a fantastic experience at Dixie Stampede!

The eight heroic musicians are the focus of an “exhibit that explores their lives, loves and legacies.” The exhibit has been in development for more than three years and has opened to rave reviews. It really is extraordinary. Visitors to the new exhibit at Titanic Branson will learn little known facts about these men. How many had never been to sea before? How many were married … how many engaged? The band was actually two groups, a trio and a quintet. The eight musicians had never played together on Titanic until the night the ship was sinking. Steinway & Sons was the “official” Titanic piano. Do you know how many were on board? The Wal-

lace Hartley violin, that was on display at Titanic Branson last year sold at auction for $1.7 million. I always enjoy time at Titanic. The Titanic Crew is extraordinarily informed and courteous. The reason for that: Titanic University. Every crew member attends, and there are refresher courses and weekend retreats. With more than 400 artifacts in more than 20 unique galleries, it takes exceptional people to ensure visitors have a good experience. After you “board” the ship, just past the iceberg, you’ll see the most accurate model of Titanic ever built. On

into the “Shipyard,” you’ll be amazed at the room-sized photos and clanking sounds of Titanic under construction. Past the “Boiler Room” are Father Browne’s exceptional photographs, the only ones of passengers taken on board. Looking into the “thirdclass cabin,” I wonder, how could four people live there, even just to sleep, for the long voyage? It barely looks big enough to turn around. Walk up the Grand Staircase, a magnificent fullscale replica 60 feet high, and look into a first-class stateroom (occupied by

Liverpool Legends ... By Linda Burlingame

“George Harrison,” aka Marty Scott, is excited about Liverpool Legends’ venue this year, Caravelle Theatre. “It’s the perfect theater for the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.” He told me, “The Caravelle is just about exactly the same size as the Ed Sullivan theater; it’s an old-time’ theater, the real deal. The energy level will be good there … Caravelle has a good rock ‘n’ roll vibe!” “Handpicked” by Louise Harrison, sister of the late Beatle George Harrison, these “lads” not only bear a striking resemblance to the four fa-

Caravelle Theatre for 2014 season mous musicians, their sound, their appearance, mannerisms and actions (“John” jumping around, kicking up his heels and chewing his gum!) remarkably recreate the group that changed music forever. Y o u know the music — it’s classic and has an appeal across the generations. Note for note, Liverpool Legends’ sound is incredibly authentic. During the show there are more than a dozen guitars on stage; I asked Marty about it. He reminded me that every year the Beatles had a different look, a different sound … different guitars. Liverpool

Legends even has to special order strings from England for some of the guitars. Marty says it can be “stressful” selecting songs for the show — there’s such a catalog of great music. They change it up now and then; and the play list is different for different venues. Liverpool Legends performs around the world — South America, England, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Ecuador … last year they did two sold out shows in Israel. Louise mentions it’s wonderful to see audiences singing along in a language that is not their own. She takes questions at the end of intermission, always interesting. She shares some fascinating stories. Marty was performing at a Beatles convention in Chicago, not long

Colonel John Jacob Astor IV and his wife), roomy with its elegant carpeting, chaise, writing desk and lamps … luxury! The Dining Salon, Marconi Room, the Captain’s Bridge … one unique experience after another. All through the ship are facts, trivia quizzes, fascinating information about the displays. Did you know Titanic was a Royal Mail Ship? That there were ten dogs on board? How many eggs? Any chickens? Tea cups? Fascinating facts about what was on board to take care of passengers 24 hours a day! I promise you on each visit you will experience new things! A self-guided Audio Tour is available, an excellent 90-minute tour that includes stories told by Titanic survivors.

after George Harrison’s death in 2001 when he met Louise Harrison. About a year later Marty and “Lou” started putting together Liverpool Legends. Kevin Mantegna, John Lennon of the group, and Marty are longtime friends. Bob Beahon as Paul McCartney and Greg George as Ringo round out this extraordinary group. Their “piano man,” whom they call the “fifth Beatle,” is Bob Dobro. I remarked about the age range of the audience, from nine to 90. Marty grinned and said, “Yeah, you’re not supposed to like your grandparents’ music, right?!” You’ll love the music, enjoy the video clips of the Beatles … and Liverpool Legends even has their own “Ed Sullivan.” Don’t miss this incredible show!

It is first class music, arrangements and harmonies; the show features authentic

The show includes other favorite music from the 70’s, songs like YMCA, In the Navy; a great medley of tunes like Respect, Mustang Sally, Dancing in the Street … with the costumes, all the dancing, it’s a kaleidoscope of color and fun.
