Titanic Mascots Molly & Carter are going into semiretirement at the end of the year. If you haven’t met these darling girls, you’re missing out! They are pictured here with First Class Maid Jaynee. They have paid tribute to the 10 dogs on board Titanic and have been active in the community, including work for local animal causes. The Margaret “Molly” Brown Display will close at year’s end. She was an extraordinary woman in many ways and Titanic has done a nice tribute to her that includes
wonderful photographs and many personal items. Stay tuned — always something new happening at Titanic!
The stars are out in full force in Branson this fall. Moon River Weekends present several guest entertainers including Clint Black and Rich Little. (See Linda Burlingame’s article on the Andy Williams Theatre.) Mel Tillis arrives in September at the Clay Cooper Theatre. Jim Stafford and Mickey Gilley continue their full season of shows. And this just in — if you enjoyed the “musical stylings” of Mike Cathcart at the Moon River Grill, Mike is now performing with the Jim Stafford Show!
Congratulations to Gilley, he was recently inducted into the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame in Iowa. (How many does that make?!) Gilley has a new DVD

coming out. It is a tribute to Joey Riley, who lost his battle with colon cancer. Joey was an extraordinary entertainer and for many years was with Gilley’s show. Featuring Joey’s appearances with Gilley, all DVD proceeds will go to Joey’s wife Kelli, to help offset the huge medical bills incurred.
Fall is a gorgeous time here in the Ozarks. “The hills are alive …” not only with “the sound of music” but also the vivid color of leaves, crisp, clear skies. The weather is perfect for golf on one of Branson’s championship golf courses and often warm enough for a swim in the lake or a dip in the pool. Be sure Branson is on your Christmas list, too! New this year The Starlite Theatre is presenting The Toy Shoppe, written by Kenny Rogers and starring Billy Dean. All your favorite shows will be celebrating the season. Of course, when you are here this fall, you can do some wonderful Christmas shopping at our local stores and theater gift shops! Enjoy!

This fall The Andy Williams Theatre hosts a concert series on Friday and Saturday nights September 20—October 19. Master Impressionist, Rich Little, takes the stage September 20-21 with his one-man show Jimmy Stewart and Friends, mesmerizing audiences with more than 40 famous voices. His wit, combined with incredible talent with the voices of entertainers and politicians, make an incredibly entertaining experience.
Award-winning Lee Greenwood performs an inspirational show September 27-28. His God Bless America has been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America. It was CMA’s Song of the Year in 1985. Greenwood has been honored as Male
Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association (twice) and the Academy of Country Music.
Country music star Clint Black returns to Moon River October 4-5. A country music traditionalist from Texas, Black helped kick-start the popularity of country in the '90s. He has written, recorded and released more than 100 songs, including dozens of #1 Hit Singles, Top 5 and Top 10 Hits.
The Happy Together Tour represents four hit-making groups of the 60’s. The Tour is on stage at Moon River October 18-19 and stars The Turtles, featuring Flo and Eddie; Monkees’ lead singer Micky Dolenz; Gary Puckett and the Union Gap; and Mark Lindsay, former lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders. This 60’s musical journey delights audiences. (I know all the words!)
Oh What a Night tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons plays through Oct. 24 and Cat’s Pajamas Vocal Band appears through Dec. 7. Both fun shows!
The Andy Williams Christmas Show, starring the Osmonds and the Lennon Sisters, and The Daniel O’Donnell Show both run Nov. 1 – Dec. 7. Ireland’s Daniel O’Donnell skyrocketed to worldwide acclaim on PBS, and Ireland’s top female vocalist Mary Duff shares the stage in this exciting live show. The Lennons and Osmonds all have a performing history with Andy Williams. Together with other musicians and variety acts and the outstanding Moon River Orchestra the wonderful legacy of the Andy Williams Christmas Show continues. The beautiful Andy Williams Moon River Theatre, the only theater ever featured in Architectural Digest, has a unique exterior remarkably in tune with its setting. Inside, oak floors and high ceilings of African ribbon-striped mahogany are an elegant backdrop to artwork and celebrity photos from Andy’s TV shows.

It was time for lunch; so I suggested we have a bite at Vasken’s Deli out by Branson Mill Craft Village. I told my two grandchildren that I needed to talk to Rattlesnake Eddie anyway, and we’d find him at the Mill. Well, should’ve taken a photo of their faces right then. “Who?!”
That’s what everyone calls Eddie Wood, and you will find him and his w i f e Debbie at t h e i r Crooked S k y Tr a d i n g Post inside t h e Branson Mill Craft Village on N o r t h Gretna Road. It is a custom leather shop … and a whole lot more. Eddie does beautiful leatherwork that includes belts, guitar straps, holster rigs, gun slings, an extensive variety of things. It’s interesting to watch him work; and though he’s a quiet person, he enjoys talking with visitors in his shop. He cuts quite a handsome figure in his tall boots, western pants and shirt, vest, western necktie and hat. (You can get a start outfitting yourself there.) And Debbie always looks smart in clothes with western touches and lovely jewelry. The shop covers a large area and is fascinating. There are traces of Native American heritage in their backgrounds and they have an enthusiasm for products that will be treasured for generations. The beadwork Debbie
creates and the many other things in the shop, like the vintage turquoise jewelry and the designer copper jewelry certainly will be!
Eddie’s leatherwork began during his rodeo days in the ‘70’s, when he rode and fought bulls professionally at rodeos all over the country. And as you can see, the kids found out he’s not scary at all! We bought souvenirs; Sydney got a necklace and Dillon scored two sweet little “bullet” knives. And we bought Rattlesnake Eggs. Now, that’s a must-have s o u v e n i r. (Be sure to keep them in a cool place.) T h e Branson
Mill is a wonderful place to browse and shop. It is 40,000 sq. ft. of retail space with working artists and crafters. Woodcarving, pottery, custom embroidery, wonderful mosaic work (Say hi to my friend Juanita!), handmade musical instruments and a lot more in the 150 showrooms. The new Vasken’s Express Deli and Gram’s Snack Shop (with Nathan’s Hot Dogs!) and nice oak tables and chairs provide a relaxed place to gather. Enjoy!

Terry Sanders is a familiar face around Branson but you may not know him by that name. You might know him as “Homer Lee,” “Joan Rivers,” or any one of more than 20 characters. At The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama he has two identities, “Ollie” and “Doc.” His son Evan Sanders also plays “Ollie.” When Evan was eight, he started playing “Little Pete.” He literally grew into
the “Ollie” role. Evan’s older brother Austin also assumed the “Little Pete” role at eight; Austin now does lights and sound for the show, with
an occasional stand-in performance. Evan works in the booth, too, when not performing.
Terry is very quick-witted. While he may be working from a script, each performance is unique and can turn on a dime! I notice this when I see him as “Ollie.” During the “chat” with the audience, he needs his quick reactions! He plays “Ollie” six nights a week and “Doc” one night a week. See SHEPHERD FAMILY, Page 20

This show is always one of my favorites. #1 Hits of the 60’s is high-energy and fast-paced, taking the audience on a wonderful adventure through 60’s music. Motown, the British invasion, California Surfin’, the Age of Aquarius — quite the musical journey. There are 100 costume changes. The bell-bottoms, psychedelic colors, and hairdos! There are gorgeous gowns, too, like the black, shimmery dresses and boas for Stop! In the Name of Love. The show is well staged and moves at a good pace. The cast does more than 90

a show filled with talent and fun!
#1 and Top 40 songs. There’s fun audience participation, too, such as the quiz: is this a 60’s song or a 50’s song?! Along with the musical history of the decade, you see video clips showing some historical, noteworthy events. You can think back to the first moon landing, first heart transplant … John, Martin and Bobby. Poignant and fun, the audience experiences every mood. This is 11th season #1 Hits of 60’s. I love

high school skit they do. The “plot” is the upcoming school dance. Who has a date? There’s “Johnny” in his black leather jacket with the collar turned up, “Irving” with his nerdy outfit, the girls. Oh, and the “school marm!” The songs and dances tell much of the story. And you might not guess who ends up singing Born To Be Wild! The “swim,” “locomotion” and the “mashed potato” … so many dances and songs. What a great decade!
Just think — Dance to the Music, It’s My Party, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling, Johnny Angel, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, Leavin’ on a Jet Plane, songs from the Beach Boys, Joan Baez, The Ronettes, The Hollies, Chiffons, Simon & Garfunkel … The Supremes! It was an incredible era of music; the cast truly does it justice. The arrangements and the harmonies are excellent. So take a step back in time, for a rockin’ good time. Enjoy!

The Hamner Barber Variety Show offers song and dance, magic, comedy, ventriloquism, gorgeous birds — a unique, tender tribute to America’s Veterans. I’m not sure the definition of “variety” covers all that. I should look up “variety.” It may say, “See Hamner Barber Show!”

quist and clever comedian; Dave is a gifted illusionist. The show is exciting. Consider:
Dave waves flaming swords; two white cockatoos fly out of the flames. Then, some brightly colored scarves and whoosh — a bright green and red macaw appears to make an impressive flight over the audience. Dave tears a newspaper into the shape of a bird; you guessed it: a live bird appears. And as closely as I watch….
Now here’s Jim Barber with a “dummy” and a routine that makes him look like the dummy. It’s “Barber and Seville!” All three sing really well. (Three?) I love the hilarious Baby in the Bag routine, too. And Chico Pete is adorable and hilarious. Singers and dancers add more
excitement and variety. Denise Hamner (bird wrangler!) makes several appearances — and disappearances! The H a m n e r Barber homage to Veterans is extraordinary. There are taped interviews with three survivors of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Their See HAMNER BARBER, Page 19

There are many ways to have fun in Branson … that’s so-o-o evident when my family visits in the summer. So much to do, so little time! Big fans of the Vigilante ZipRider at The Shepherd of the Hills, they decided this year they also wanted to experience Branson Zipline Canopy Tours. It was a wonderful experience and we have the picture to prove it!

Branson Zipline Canopy Tours offers world-class eco-adventures and fun for all ages. The kids had never been to Wolfe Creek Preserve and were immediately impressed by the lodge. Amish-built, it is extraordinary, even the beautiful wood floor inside. The gift shop is incredible. Mike Cathcart has joined the cast of the Jim Stafford Show! Jim has a wonderful show that is always evolving; it’s full of comedy, of course, and really, really good musicianship. Jim is a worldclass guitarist and likes good talent around him.
Mike, who is the son of Peggy Lennon and the late Dick Cathcart, is an outstanding guitarist and is well known to many Branson visitors. He was with the Lennon Cathcart Show last year and also played piano and sang at Moon River Grill. Andy Williams once said, “Mike is the best singer I know.” Jim and Mike do some songs together on the guitar, including Classical Gas and Malaguena. Mike says it’s “an honor to be on stage with Jim.” Mike’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ is nice, and you’ll enjoy his original-the-way-Jimmy Webb-wrote-it version of Galveston.

The entire show is artfully arranged, mixing music with comedy in a “thrill ride” of fun. Jim makes “everyday” things f u n n y . Sometimes you chuckle and smile. Other times you laugh out loud; and, of course, Jim reminds you to “let it out!”
Cow Patti and Spiders and Snakes are just two of Jim’s popular comedy songs. The 1974 Spiders sits in the top 50 of Billboard’s Hot 100 Country Songs,
along with the hits of Elvis, Glen Campbell, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Marty Robbins and other legendary recording artists. Jim told me he’s been “makin’ a living” with his guitar since he was 16.
Jim and Ann’s Shea and G.G. have been part of the show since they were babies; I remember Ann walking down the theater aisle with them when each was just a few days old, as Jim sang his That’s What Little Kids Do. Shea is 20 now and G.G. is 16! They’re now good musicians, veteran performers. Don’t miss The Jim Stafford Show. When the curtain goes up, the fun begins!

“Eating local” is a must when you’re on vacation; we’re sharing some local favorites you won’t find anywhere else in the world. From
fun fare to fine dining, Branson has it all. Dolly Parton says her Dixie Stampede is “the most fun place to eat in Branson!” I won’t argue — great show, too!

You’ve read often in the Gazette about Dobyns Dining Room at The Keeter Center and Chef Bob Stricklin. Many menu items include ingredients from the College garden. It’s Chef Doug Knopp in charge out at Chateau on the Lake. Gorgeous view … and ask about his Chef’s Table. Another nice restaurant on Table Rock Lake is Devil’s Pool at Big Cedar Lodge. Branson Rocky’s is a longtime local favorite. (I love the pasta con broccoli!) Up on the “strip” the Outback Steak & Oyster Bar is unique in many ways, including the many antiques from Australia. The Outback Pub right next door often has live music. Live music of a different sort, a wonderful western sort, is served up at Sons of the Pioneers Chuckwagon Dinner Show at The Shepherd of the Hills.

Another show I love at Hamner Barber Theater is Tom Mullica’s Red Skelton Tribute. Tom has mastered Red’s timing and movement and presents some classic Skelton characters and sketches. Tom has a 10am show. A new 3 p.m. show there is The Fair Family.
This is the last year for the Hamner Barber Show — it’s disappearing! Jim is pursuing new opportunities next year; the Hamners return (reappear) to the venue with a new production called Hamners’ Unbelievable Variety. Tom Mullica and several other entertainers/shows will call Hamner Variety Theater home. Stay tuned!

Evan plays “Ollie” remarkably well, too. Unlike the part of “Little Pete,” which is most often quite poignant, “Ollie” is a rascally, too-bigfor-his-britches citified fellow who is the butt of many jokes. Evan’s “Ollie” is very “visual.” It’s evident he watched a lot of Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy with his dad! Evan, now 18, stays busy like his father. Besides jobs at Shepherd, he hosts at Cantina Laredo at Branson Landing. Austin, 22, works at Shepherd, is in two rock ‘n’ roll bands, and is the Beer and Scotch Specialist at Macadoodles!

Terry remembers visiting Branson when he was five. He went home and “built Silver Dollar City” in his backyard: a general store, a tree house, a blacksmith shop. He told his
grandpa, “I want to be in Branson. I want to do it all.” Terry is certainly doing it all! Great show, Terry! Thanks for all the laughs.
But the boys can’t hold a candle to Dad. Terry, who has a BFA in Speech and Theater from MSU, has eight jobs, including Shepherd; five characters a day at Silver Dollar City; eight within a onehour show on the Vacation Channel; “Deputy Birdy Tweedle”
Another family note — when I started working at the Gazette in 1990, Dana Lackey was playing Sammy Lane. I attended her wedding to Dan Embree, and her baby shower for daughter, Kelly. Dana, who also works in productions at Silver Dollar City, now plays “Aunt Molly” and her daughter Kelly Embree is playing “Sammy!” And so it goes. “Shepherd family.”

Besides ziplining and shopping, another nice opportunity is Wolfe Creek Photo Safari, which begins (as all the adventures do) with a ride to the top of the mountain in a Pinzgauer Swiss Army Troop Carrier, then a guided, gentle downhill walking tour through Wolfe
Creek Preserve. Plenty of observation decks, too … it’s all fun. When guests arrive back at the lodge after their adventure, all eyes go to the video screens to see their photos. We heartily recommend Branson Zipline Canopy Tours. Who’s ready to “go again?!”
