MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CEO DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, Inspired. Amazed. Grateful. Excited. These are the four words I use to sum up my first few months as the president and chief executive officer of Sheppard Pratt Health System. INSPIRED by the courage of those we serve. Each year, one in five people experiences some form of mental illness, and one in every 25 adults lives with a serious mental health condition. Though mental illness is common, false beliefs and stigma remain. I am continuously encouraged by the strength and tenacity of the millions of people we treat each year. This is what pushes me to work harder each and every day. AMAZED that, even after 160 years, our patient-centered treatment approach has remained the same as when we first opened our doors. Our founder, Moses Sheppard, envisioned a place that treated patients with dignity and respect, with a window in each room and soothing grounds to look at through the window. And while our treatments and therapies have always been modern and ahead of their time, our commitment to providing compassionate care has never changed. Each of the 5,161 employees across our health system ask themselves one question on a daily basis: “Is this the care I would want if this were my loved one?” Answering “yes” to this fundamental question is what ensures that, even today, as the nation’s largest non-profit provider of mental health, substance use, special education, and social support services, we continue to carry out Sheppard’s dream of improving the quality of life of those we serve. GRATEFUL for the wisdom and bold leadership of those that came before me and of those that help to guide me. Despite the ever-changing healthcare landscape, Sheppard Pratt has always found a way to broaden our mission, expand our impact, and thrive so that we can continue to help more and more people. Much of this growth is thanks to the civic-mindedness of the board of trustees to whom I report, and the foresight of the five presidents who preceded me. I am thankful that the board of trustees and senior leaders at Sheppard Pratt have put their faith in me to help guide us into the future. EXCITED for what is to come. We will continue to stay true to our mission, as Moses Sheppard originally intended, to provide the best, most compassionate and comprehensive care. We will lead the way by innovating the field with our research to develop better treatments and therapies. We will further expand our ability to define what world-class mental health care and treatment truly are. We will do this while partnering, educating, and training to have the greatest impact on the lives of as many people as possible. This is our duty. I look forward to working with all of you to define the future of mental health care. And that future has never been brighter. Sincerely,
Harsh K. Trivedi, M.D., MBA President and CEO Sheppard Pratt Health System

INTEGRATING CARE
Did you know? Sheppard Pratt Health System provides community-based services through its wholly owned subsidiary programs. Family Services, Mosaic Community Services, and Way Station provide crisis beds, services for serious mental illness, veterans services, domestic violence and victim services, residential services, child development services, supported employment services, addiction services, and intellectual and developmental disability services.
IMPROVING OUR CLIENTS’ LIVES THROUGH INTEGRATED CARE THIS PAST YEAR, Sheppard Pratt Health System focused on finding innovative ways to integrate mental health, substance use, and physical health care. We are better able to manage all aspects of a person’s health and reach more people by treating them where they receive care, whether that be within a primary care setting, a behavioral health home, or at their own residence following a hospital discharge.
WAY STATION’S HEALTH HOME INITIATIVE ON AVERAGE, people with severe mental illness die 20 years earlier than the rest of the population because they don’t get the support they need for their physical health. In an effort to increase access to primary care for those with serious mental illness, Way Station began co-locating primary care services within behavioral health homes. They embedded nurse care managers on the psychosocial rehabilitation teams, which increased patient participation in care and reduced medical costs.

MOSAIC INTEGRATED HEATH MOSAIC COMMUNITY SERVICES launched its Integrated Health Services in early fiscal year 2016 at its new state-of-the-art facility in Baltimore City. The launch took place after the conclusion of a three-year pilot project funded through a Community Housing Resource Commission (CHRC) grant. Mosaic’s Behavioral Health Home has achieved remarkable results, demonstrating a 100 percent utilization of enrolled clients by fiscal year-end 2016. The Health Home team focuses on health initiatives such as metabolic screening, body mass index, blood pressure, nutrition habits, and smoking cessation; each client has at least one health goal on their person-centered plan. An improvement in overall health was reported by 83 percent of clients served, and emergency room utilization has dropped significantly.
CARELINK TRANSITIONS SERVICES THROUGH FAMILY SERVICES CareLink TRANSITIONS, a program offered through Family Services, partners with local hospitals to provide assistance and support for those dealing with behavioral health and medical issues after being discharged from the hospital. For 30 days post-discharge, CareLink provides transitional case management services, including home visits by licensed nurses or case managers, assistance in applying for benefits, coordination of health services and appointments, as well as transportation services to post-hospital medical appointments.

REDUCING AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR
THIS PAST YEAR, one of our major performance improvement initiatives
Quick Facts About the LEAN Program (all numbers from fiscal years 2014, 2015, and 2016)

that was worked on through the LEAN program was to reduce aggressive and violent patient behavior on the Adult Psychotic Disorders Unit, Sheppard Pratt’s most high-acuity unit. To start, we developed an assessment of the current state of the unit by convening a “Failure Mode and Effects Analysis” (FMEA) workgroup to explore all possible contributors to aggressive violence in the hospital. Together, we systematically walked through a patient’s interaction with us, from the time the hospital emergency room called with the referral until the aggressive behavior ceased. Once we determined the risk and priority level, we developed action items and began the process for improvements. After

central area, the staff tended to follow and congregate as well. However, this approach left hallways unsupervised. Under the new approach, the staff is spread out to observe patients as they enter and exit a zone or hallway. This new methodology has virtually eliminated “hot spots” of aggressive behavior on the unit. ER visits for serious assault injuries have essentially ceased since February 2015 and the number of assaults with any injury was significantly reduced by 50 percent, from 1.6 per month to .8 per month. What was once considered the most violent and aggressive unit is now a benchmark for other units to learn from.

RESEARCH INITIATIVES SHEPPARD PRATT HEALTH SYSTEM is a world leader in the study of neurostimulation, including
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which utilizes magnetics and transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS), employing low-voltage electricity, rather than medication, to treat mood disorders. Most people who are treated with TMS have tried antidepressant medications and have not achieved satisfactory improvement. Our Department of Clinical Research Programs is currently conducting two studies to test TMS with populations that have had the least amount of success with antidepressant medications, including those with bipolar depression (people with a bipolar disorder who are in a depressive phase) and adolescents. study 1 Neurostimulation for Patients with Bipolar Depression A review of data collected from past studies of patients treated in our TMS program who had bipolar depression showed a 77 percent response rate to this neurostimulation. These results prompted a prospective study of patients with bipolar depression. The preliminary results have been positive, with TMS well-tolerated by participants. Our hope is that these results will lead toward funding for a larger sham-controlled study that will open the door for this to become an accepted treatment for people with bipolar depression.
Dr. Scott Aaronson, director, Clinical Research Programs
study 2 Neurostimulation for Adolescents Sheppard Pratt Health System is one of 10 national sites to conduct an industry-funded study looking at TMS in depressed adolescents, ages 12 to 21. While data is still being collected, we hope that the success of this study will convince the FDA to approve TMS for depression in adolescent populations.

PHILANTHROPY UPDATE DEAR FRIENDS,
Did you know?
100% of your donation goes to helping our patients, clients, students, and residents to heal and recover.
Sheppard Pratt Health System continues to flourish today because of the generous benefactors who perpetuate our mission to provide mental health, substance use, special education, and community support to those we serve. Sheppard Pratt Health System raised $22 million this fiscal year, with $6 million in private donations and $16 million in government awards. Initiatives receiving substantial support included integrated health efforts, research, special education, substance use treatment, supported housing services, telepsychiatry services, and workforce development efforts. Of special note, we received two significant gifts to begin a Nursing Practicum Program to benefit nurses in training and, as a result, our patients. The Women’s Hospital Foundation and the Benno and Elayne Hurwitz Family Foundation have made it possible for us to provide psychiatric nurse practitioners more in-depth experience with our patient populations. Selected nurses will go through a three- to four-month training program depending on specialty area, and will participate in patient evaluations and building a patient caseload with the attending psychiatrist. These gifts allow us to care for many more patients in our Neuropsychiatry Program and Crisis Walk-In Clinic (CWIC). Our 2016 Care for Kids Benefit surpassed last year’s event and raised $400,000 for our Care for Kids Fund. The event at the Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore featured gorgeous views, delicious food, and fabulous music inspired by Elvis. We also hosted the 3rd Annual Sheppard Pratt Stride, a family-friendly 1-mile walk and inaugural 5K. Nearly 700 participants joined us for this festive event, which raised more than $70,000 for the Patient Care Fund. Also this fiscal year, we welcomed 12 new members to our Gatehouse Society, which recognizes in perpetuity those who have made extraordinary contributions in support of Sheppard Pratt. Donors are eligible to join once they have made cumulative gifts of $10,000 or more. Within the Gatehouse Society, we had six members who moved to a new giving level, representing an increased philanthropic commitment. On the following pages, we acknowledge the many donors who have contributed to Sheppard Pratt Health System during the past fiscal year. We are grateful for the important role that our loyal and generous supporters play in our ability to provide compassionate care to the people we serve. Most sincerely,
Marguerite O. Kelley, CFRE Vice President, Philanthropy
