IRISH EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY CARVED GILT WOOD FRAMED PIER MIRROR CIRCA 1750 The rectangular plate, the top with serpentine corners, within a C-scroll carved frame, below a bird-centred broken-arched swan-necked pediment. 114 cm high; 62 cm wide €2,000-3,000 Many of the finest mirrors of the 18th century were made in Dublin, and shipped to England and America, a development partly as a result of taxes imposed by the British government on glass in 1745. F Lewis Hinckley argues in Queen Anne and Georgian Looking Glasses: Old English and Early American that ‘tax conscious Americans, steered clear of London produced mirrors, when all such necessities and luxuries could be obtained... tax-free, in Dublin’. The most famous of the these craftsmen were the ‘Looking Glass Merchants, glass-grinders and glass sellers’ Francis and John Booker who had premises in Essex Bridge, Dublin, around 1750. In 1772, Francis became Lord Mayor of Dublin. His brother John, also a carver and gilder, carried on the family business until the late 1780s.

NINETEENTH-CENTURY CHINESE CHIPPENDALE LACQUERED SETTEE The pagoda carved crest rail above a trellis panelled back and stuff-over seat, raised on square chamfered legs. 99 cm. high; 118 cm. wide; 58 cm. deep â‚Ź1,400-1800
After a design by Thomas Chippendale. The decoration on this piece reflects the great love he had for exotic Chinese-style interiors, which he incorporated into many of the great houses in England, including Harewood House and Nostell Priory. Similarly, pieces made by Chippendale found their way to Ireland; typically as a result of inheritance or marriage. A suite of Chippendale furniture is at the seat of the Earl of Rosse, Birr Castle, Co. Offaly, Ireland. The suite was brought to the castle by Anne, Countess of Rosse on the occasion of her marriage in 1935. (Source: Sybil Connolly (ed.), In an Irish house, London, 1988, p.124).

It is thought that the sculptor Leon Mesange who orginally worked with Zwiener may have transferred to Linke’s workshop.
Linke. In order to differentiate commissions, the bronzes were often marked on the reverse side with the maker’s initials. Several of Zwiener’s mounts have been found with a 'Z', a 'ZW', or 'IZ', on the reverse while other pieces have been found with a signature and/or date. In 1889, the firm won a gold medal at the Paris world fair ‘Exposition Universelle’ for a Jewel Cabinet.
The high quality of the cabinet work and the gilt-bronze mounts are characteristic of Zwiener’s work. As Mesange worked for Linke and Zwiener in the same style, many of Zwiener’s pieces have been attributed to

Source: The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker’s Director plate, no. LXXIII Published London, 1753 Thomas Chippendale was born in Otley, Yorkshire, 1718 and died in London in 1779. Chippendale was an only child, born into a family of Yorkshire carpenters. Details of his early career are unknown but in 1748, aged 30, he moved to London where he set up as a cabinet-maker, married and had a large family. In 1753 he published The Gentleman and CabinetMaker’s Director, a pattern book that was to secure his position as one of the most eminent cabinet- makers of the 18th century. Chippendale’s workshop was on St Martin’s Lane, the newly fashionable centre of the furniture making trade in London. From there he undertook many large-scale furnishing projects for grand houses throughout Britain. In the 18th century there was an increasing demand for luxury goods. Chippendale’s Director provided for this market with 160 engravings of fashionable furniture designs.

GEORGE MULLINS (1740-1775) A portrait of a seated beggar man, mount Snowdon in the distance. Oil on canvas laid on wood. 26 x 20 inches. (66 x 50.5 cms) Signed and dated "Geor Mullins AD 1772". Exhibited: The Royal Academy, London. 1773 No.367. €10,000-15,000
George Mullins (fl. 1763 – 1775) George Mullins studied at the Dublin Society’s Drawing School where he was a pupil of James Manning. Initially, he painted trays and snuffbox lids at Thomas Wyse’s Japan and Birmingham ware workshop in Waterford City where he also painted a portrait of the Wyse family. On his return to Dublin he married the owner of the Horseshoe and Magpie, a Temple Bar alehouse frequented by theatrical performers. Horace Walpole, the English art connoisseur, noted that Mullin’s wife was the sister of the Irish portrait painter Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1739–1808). Throughout the period 1765-69 Mullins exhibited with the Society of Artists. The Dublin Society awarded him a premium in 1763 for ‘best original landscape painted in oil’ and again in 1768 for a history piece. The Earl of Charlemont, his earliest and most important patron, commissioned a set of four large classical landscapes for his house at Marino, Dublin. Representing the four times of day they now hang at Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland. In 1770, Mullins moved to London where he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1770 until his presumed death in 1775 aged 35. Strickland writes his pictures ‘excelled in tone and colour’ 9 6 | M A STERWORK S AT SH E P PARD'S
and were ‘much esteemed in his day’. Mullins also worked as a sign painter. The celebrated landscape painter Thomas Roberts (1748 – 1778) was his pupil. The present picture can be compared stylistically and compositionally to the artist’s Zeus, one of 15 cameo paintings on the panelled saloon ceiling at the Myddleton family Chirk Castle in North Wales. Indeed, in both, the physical resemblance of the sitter – facial expression, pose, and coiffure – is remarkably striking. So too, are the dates of execution (c. 1773) while the known locations Chirk Castle and Llangollen are less than 10 km. apart. Well-shod, well-dressed, and well-fleshed, Mullin’s ‘beggar man’ neatly fits the recorded ‘Arcadian tastes entertained by one of the ladies of the [Myddelton] family’. (76.5 x 107 cms) Signed (lower right) “T. Sidney Cooper”. €20,000–30,000 Exhibited: 1856, Vernon Holme, the artist’s residence, near Canterbury; 1856, Royal Academy, No.357, as titled. Provenance: Christies. 26 March 1892. Lot 88. 145 guineas to Handcock. Label verso: Frost & Reed Gallery, New Bond Street, London Literature: Kenneth J Westwood, Thomas Sidney Cooper His Life And Work, Somerset, 2011, vol.I p.278 & vol.II illustrated p.148.
Thomas Sidney Cooper was arguably one of the foremost painters of domestic animals in the history of art. He specialised in depicting domesticated farm animals. He was equally proficient in the use of oil paint and watercolours. A sheep lew (1856) was executed at the peak of Cooper’s painterly powers. His finest work is generally held to be those paintings and watercolours made between c.1840 and c.1875. His works have earned him uninterrupted admiration for quality of detail and colouring and for his exceptional ability to capture the character of his subjects, typically cattle, sheep, donkeys or goats.
His work was much sought after by members of the British aristocracy and the nineteenth-century grandees especially the newly rich industrialists and merchants of the midlands and north of England. Contemporary commentators were alive to Cooper’s extraordinary artistic powers: ‘The interior of a shed with sheep has a beautiful and striking effect of sunlight glancing through’ Source: The Kentish Gazette, 25 March 1856
Collections: Tate Gallery, London; Guildhall Art Gallery, and art galleries in Leicester, Harrogate, Sheffield, Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester and York. A comprehensive collection of his work is held at the Sidney Cooper Art Gallery, Canterbury, He was a prolific artist and was a favourite of the artist’s native city. Queen Victoria who, in recognition of Cooper’s distinguished personal service to the monarch, admitted him as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).

Thomas Hope, (born Amsterdam 1769, died Feb. 3, 1831, London). Hope was an author and furniture designer and was a major exponent of the Regency style of English decorative arts. From a rich banking family that had emigrated from Scotland to Holland during his youth he studied architecture and travelled extensively in Mediterranean countries,. He settled in London about 1796 and in 1807 purchased Deepdene, the country house in Surrey that he decorated and furnished in the Regency style. Included in its furnishings were statues executed by John Flaxman, a leading English Neoclassical sculptor, and an Egyptian sofa and chair now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Hope’s major work on interior design is Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807; facsimile ed., 1937), which influenced the Neoclassical movement. He also authored The Costumes of the Ancients (1809) and Designs of Modern Costume (1812). His most popular work was the novel Anastasias; or, Memoirs of a Greek Written at the Close of the Eighteenth Century (1819).

The use and importance of the scallop shell in art and architecture throughout the ages is noteworthy. In particular, the use of the scallop shell on Irish furniture as a decorative and symbolic device: the scallop shell as a motif was very much favoured by Irish cabinetmakers and wood carvers. Like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus (1482 – 1485) – one of the most famous and loved paintings in the world – where the Roman goddess Venus is portrayed standing contrapposto on a scallop shell, it employment was inspired by the Ovid’s narrative poem `Metamorphoses’.

EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PERIOD CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SERPENTINE COMMODE, CIRCA 1770 of three drawers, furnished with ornate brass handles. This commode, after a design by Thomas Chippendale, shows a richness and subtlety of design The word commode is French and came into use in the French Court about 1700. It refers to a cabinet or chest of drawers, low enough so that it sat at the height of the dado rail (à hauteur d'appui) The word commode was accepted as the norm in London by the mid-eighteenth century to describe chests of drawers with gracefully curved fronts and sometimes with shaped sides as well. Thomas Chippendale used the term ‘French Commode Tables’ to describe designs in his The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Director (1753). Noteworthy on the commode on offer are the richly cast scroll handles, as detailed by Chippendale: 'The ornamental Parts are intended for Brass-Work, which I should advise should be modelled in Wax and then cast from these Models’ (Director…, pl. LXVII). 76 cm. high; 83 cm. wide; 44 cm. deep € 2000-3000

SIXTEENTH-CENTURY FRAMED HISTORICAL DOCUMENT ISABBELLA (1503-1539) Queen of Spain, Holy Roman Empress A Royal document signed as Regent by Isabella in the time-honoured manner of the Spanish monarchs, You la Reyna. Isabella, born in Portugal, was extremely beautiful. Her fame derives from the few significant relationships in her relatively short life – as daughter of the Portuguese Royal Family – as wife to Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor and perhaps the most powerful man in the world at the time – and, as mother of the future Philip II of Spain and Maria, wife of the Emperor, Maximilian. Beset by problems but bent on maintaining the unity of the Empire in a crisis ridden Europe, Charles was frequently absent. In his absence, Isabella’s duties as Regent included approving official documents such as the one on offer. 600 x 1175 mm € 500-800
