JAMES POLLARD (1792 – 1867) Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arriving at Slough station to undertake the first train journey by a British monarch on Monday, 13 June, 1842

Oil on canvas

20 x 30 inches; 51 x 76 cm. €8,000 – 12,000

Note James Pollard (1792 – 1867) was an English painter with a deserved reputation for his depictions of horse-drawn carriages and other equestrian scenes. In this important historic painting, Pollard captures the arrival of the six carriage strong Royal party at Slough station on Monday, 13 June 1842 just minutes before Queen Victoria became the first British monarch ever to travel by rail.

Fredrick Pratt Barlow while a similarly suited Brunel is to the right. An impressive mounted military escort of lancers and uniformed police provide protection for the Monarch who had just survived an attempted assassination two weeks prior. Under the circumstances the train journey had been unannounced. The Illustrated London News commented that the Royal carriage was fitted out ‘upon a most elegant and magnificent scale, tastefully improved by bouquets of rare flowers arranged within’. In a letter to her uncle King Leopold of Belgium, Queen Victoria wrote:

The engine Phlegethon, pulling the royal saloon and six other carriages, transported Queen Victoria the 30 km. from Slough to Paddington, in 35 minutes. Built in 1840, the train engine was designed and driven by Daniel Gooch (later Sir) who was accompanied on the footplate by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 – 1859), one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history.

‘We arrived here yesterday morn having come here by the rail-road from Windsor in half an hour free from dust and crowd and heat’. Her Majesty in summarising her new experience confessed, ‘I am quite charmed by it.’

Charles Russell, MP (1786-1856) chairman of the Great Western Railway (GRW) is seeing greeting Queen Victoria who was accompanied by Prince Albert and the Princess Royal. Seen behind the Royals in morning suits are GWR secretary Charles Alexander Saunders (1796-1864) and director

Today, James Pollard’s works are in the collections of major repositories including Tate Gallery, London: National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Yale Centre for British Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. 9
