Headmistress Jenny Dwyer The Year in Review Headmistress Jenny Dwyer shares her thoughts about what has made this year so successful at Sherborne Girls I have always relished the opportunity that

and celebrate the values that we hold dear. This year, the process has a particular poignancy, because it is the last such report I shall write. So it seems fitting that I begin by remembering our theme for the year: “Embracing Change. This reminds us that we are called to face the future with a sense of

While the focus of these pillars is on the development of the school as an institution, they are more than corporate ideals. As the girls’ achievements evidence time and again, the strategic plan is a vibrant, embodied narrative that sits at the very heart of our life together. This gives me great hope that our institutional identity is stronger than ever, but also that the

to look outwards, prompting a desire to improve lives and bring hope to others. Then there are the ways in which our wider community sustains itself, and thereby helps to shape the world. Our Women in Leadership event is a case in point, bringing Sherborne Old Girls of all generations together to share expertise and help inspire the next generation. Likewise the Parent Task Force events, including a memorable quiz evening and the Midsummer Festival. These show just how much Sherborne Girls means to so many people, making us all realise that, in belonging to this community, we are a part of something very special.

Our self-understanding has been greatly enhanced by input from the psychologist Dr Aric Sigman. His insights, delivered to parents,

staff and students alike, have informed our new policy on mobile phone use, helping reduce screen time and improve the quality of our pupils’ relaxation. As with all learning, there is an interplay in all of these activities between what we know and who we are, showing that academic work is at its best when allied to the development of appropriate ways of being in the world.

Similarly, our girls achieved outstanding success at the Taunton Festival of the Arts.

Of course, our full-boarding environment

it was that girls from the lower fifth found themselves at a STEM day at Atlas Elektronik in Dorchester, with Emily Wood being recognised for her individual contribution and winning a place on a course in marine nuclear engineering with Babcock International later in the year. Experiences like this sow the seeds of ambition, showing our girls that the future is there for the taking. They just need to grasp its opportunities.

The Madrigal Society performed beautifully at a joint concert in London with Sherborne School as did our Senior Choir at the Sherborne Schools’ Choral Society performance of St John Passion. What I find inspiring is the willingness of these performers to share their gifts with others. Our pupils can often be found in local churches and community buildings, helping to raise money for worthy causes and provide entertainment. It is a source of great pride to us all; they are fantastic ambassadors for our school, embodying everything we stand for. It is also profoundly fulfilling to see the wonderful drama productions that punctuate the school year. Standout performances this year include 1984, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Kilt’s a Kilt, with girls showing a range of skills both on the stage and behind the scenes. These events typify the teamwork

Music, drama and the arts As our cutting-edge Arts Centre continues to take shape, there is a renewed enthusiasm throughout the school for artistic endeavours. It goes without saying that music is central to our shared rhythms, and it was a delight to see two Sherborne Girls ensembles in the semi finals of the prestigious Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival, with one group making it all the way to the final.

that is a feature of school life: they show girls working towards a common aim, with tangible outcomes that enhance everyone’s life. Sporting success And so to the sports field, where the relation between the individual and the whole is seen in even sharper relief. It is thrilling to see so many of our young sportswomen making a mark in their chosen discipline, whether as part of a school team or individually.

It was a source of pride for the whole school when the U18s won the Dorset County Hockey Championships in the autumn, with the U14 and U16 coming in as runners-up; and when our U18A lacrosse team progressed through to Division 1 Finals at the National Championships. Individually and as a team, our swimmers have also enjoyed success. Kayleigh Parker and Harriet Watts both gained qualification to compete in the British Summer Championships, and are in the top ten swimmers in their age groups in the country. While on the inter-schools circuit, the swimming team has continued its success with wins against all our major competitors. Witness, also, our success in the British Schools Ski Racing Championships, held in Flaine, France. Our team came first overall in the unregistered team category, and individually they scored impressive results. Millie Nokes won three events, while Sacha Nokes came second in the unregistered slalom. Similar success can be seen in our performance in the National Schools Cup for squash, where Tilly Scull, Tamsin Morgan, Amelia Etherington, Eliza Gilmour and Isabella Orr played brilliantly to reach the finals. Perdi Digby has also achieved notable success in the past year, competing in the Horse of the Year Show and winning selection for Team GB at the Lyon International Horse Show.

This is very much a pattern of our sporting achievements at Sherborne Girls. Whether it is Araminta Stubbs continuing to excel at a national level in Target Sprint (and establishing a wider enthusiasm for the sport throughout the school in her role as Sports Prefect), Daisy Baker winning two silver medals in the National Indoor Rowing Championships, or four of our cross-country runners – Araminta, Daisy Baker, Christa Cripwell and Marianna Sawyer – winning selection for the English Schools Cross Country Championships, our sporting heroes know that they stand on the shoulders of the whole school community when they compete. Our emergence as a force to be reckoned with in these contexts is a fitting reflection of our status more generally. After all, as Tatler’s Public School of the Year 2018, and a shortlisted candidate for this year’s TES Boarding School of the Year award, we are very much on the map as a place of educational excellence. I am proud of the achievements of all the girls and staff, and of the story they tell about our school. Here is a place of vibrancy, ambition and verve. It is a place that lives its values and has a clear direction for the future. I shall watch with interest as it enters an exciting new chapter. Thank you for letting me shape and be shaped by this most special community.
