Real Mothers don’t eat quiche; they don’t have time to make it. Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils are probably in the sandbox. Real Mothers often have sticky floors, filthy ovens and happy kids. Real Mothers know that dried play dough doesn’t come out of shag carpet. Real Mothers don’t want to know what the vacuum just sucked up. Real Mothers sometimes ask “why me?” and get their answer when a little voice says, “because I love you best.” Real Mothers know that a child’s growth is not measured by height or years or grade It is marked by the progression of Mama to Mommy to Mother. ~Author Unknown~

As mothers, we often wish we knew what our kids really thought about us. When they’re little, they tend to say exactly what’s on their mind. “You don’t look that old.” “That stuff you just sprayed on sure smells funny.” “You’re the best mommy ever!” But as our children get older, influenced by peers and the outside world (and television, of course!), the invisible mother-child umbilical cord starts its inevitable fraying, and as the kisses good-bye get scanter so do the words that we long to hear. In honor of Mother’s Day, I asked my son’s 4th grade class at Skyland Elementary to draw a picture of their mothers, and to tell their favorite thing about them. These are their impressions of their real moms.

Mrs. Terri R. Gilbert Skyland Elementary 4th Grade Teacher My mom has always been an outstanding role model. She taught me the importance of prayer, loving the Lord, family, and going to church. She also taught me the important values and traits of being a good mother. I only hope that my children think I am as great a mother as she was and still is to me. I can always count on her to be there when I need anything. She prays for me daily and always calls to let me know she is thinking about me. I could never have asked for a better role model and friend.

Tristan Turner Age: 9 Mom is nice, she is kind. She is very fine. She is loving, she is funny. She likes animals like bunnies. I love her and she loves me. Along with Daddy we make three.

Wendell Donald Age: 9 Oh MAN!!! There are so many things about my mom that are perfect, but the thing I like most is her singing. She sings like an angel. I love my mom and wish her the best.

When my son was just a little boy, as I tucked him into bed at night I would always say, “I love you more than beans and rice.” This eventually evolved into a game of I love you more than…chocolate-chip cookies… ice-cream…and his personal favorite - fish sticks. Today, all we have to do is say to each other “beans and rice” and we know, in code, that it means “I love you more than anything.” It’s always nice to hear, no matter the age or the way it’s said, that we as mothers are still important to - and loved by - our children. Happy Mother’s Day! d A special thanks to Mrs. Carolyn Styles, principal of Skyland Elementary School.
