here was a very funny show that used to come on television called Kids Say the Darndest Things, where Bill Cosby would talk with youngsters about seemingly ordinary things. What came out of the kid’s mouths, though, was usually hilarious. I wanted to do something similar in honor of Mothers Day, so I asked the four-year-olds from Kristen Gullette’s kindergarten class at Skyland Elementary School a few questions about their mothers. (Phew! I had forgotten how hard it was to communicate with 4-year-olds!) Notice that the children’s names have been left off to protect the innocent mothers! Q: Can anyone tell me what Mother’s

Day is? (Lots of little blank faces.) Do you remember getting together with maybe your daddy and surprising your mommy with maybe flowers? Oh yes, that’s Valentine’s Day. No, not Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day is a day where you show your appreciation for your mommy, right? And your daddy. Well . . . that’s another special day. Q: Can anyone tell me how old your Mommy is? I don’t know but I know my Mommy is old. I forgets how old. I don’t know, either. She’s actually a little young. Sixteen years old. She’s old as my dad and that’s old. Q: Can anyone finish this sentence? My Mommy is as pretty as: A flower. My mommy makes flowers. My mommy makes pink flowers. My mommy, if a fire breaks out, she can help us. Well, yes, that’s true, but your mommy is as pretty as . . . A mommy. A star. Wayne. Wayne? Did you say Wayne?

No! WAYNE, filly! (No! RAIN, silly!) Q: What does your Mommy look like? My mommy has blond hair. My momma has blond hair, too. My mommy has blond hair Does everyone’s mommy have blond hair? My mommy has long hair. My mom is having a baby. Q: What animal does your mommy look like? My mommy is an elephant. Um, um. My mommy looks like, she’s a monkey. A cat. My mommy is a carafly. A what?? She means a butterfly. Oh. A pig. My mommy is a horse. My mommy looks like uh . . . uh . . . (helped by a friend) . . . a monkey? A pig? No, she looks like a lion! A bee. A feesh (fish). A chicken. If she wanted to be a turkey she’d be like gobble, gobble. (Okay, so these kids know their animals. Mothers, don’t take it personally!)


them? Uhhhh . . . Are they cooked or raw carrots? Uhhhh . . . cooked. Strawberry Cake. How does she make it? Can you tell us? First she puts some strawberries, then she adds the carrots. And then she adds the Easter eggs, and then Ta-Da! How long does she cook it for? 6 minutes. I mean 100 minutes. Where does she put it? On the stove, in the oven? She puts it on the grill. HeeeeeHeeeeee! Cereal. Cereal? Does she cook cereal? Yes, she puts it in the oven. Q: What’s your favorite thing to do She makes macaroni and cheese. with your mommy? Because she cooks very good! Q: What does your mommy do all day long? Cleans dishes. My mother works and she also comes home. What does she do at work? Well . . . she works for her boss man. What does her boss man make her do? She cleans the tables. What does she do at home? She cleans dishes. She loves me. She takes care of my baby (baby brother). My dad just picks me up and takes me home. She watches my dog. Is your dog a bad dog that he needs watching all day? No. It’s cause he barks when he catches toys. Oh. I see . . . My mom just cleans up all the . . . and then she cleans all the clothes. I play with the toys, I have a lot of toys, and she cleans all the toys up. (I can relate.) She watches T.V. Q: What does your mommy tell you to do? Clean up my room. She tells me to feed my dog. My mom tells me to take care of my baby. She says, ‘Go to sleep!’ (I remember that one!) Q: What is your mommy’s favorite color? Lello. Pink. Red. My mommy’s favorite color is um . . . black. Q: What is your mommy’s favorite movie? The fire movie (Fireproof). I cries when I saws it. Ahhhhh . . . Cinderella? Shrek. Q: What is your favorite thing that your Mommy cooks? Macaroni. How does she make the macaroni? She puts it in the oven and gets it hot. But what’s inside? Cheese. And macaroni and cheese. How long do you have to cook it? 20 minutes. Uhhhh . . . carrots.
