from the editor This month for “The Finish Line” issue, we profile three local ladies who make keeping fit and healthy look fun and easy. Whether it’s teaching young girls self-worth as they strengthen their bodies, or helping tackle stress with a good yoga attitude, or shaking it up Latin style with salsa dancing, these women know what it takes to achieve inner strength. This month we also feature Roger Beasley, co-chair of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in the Upstate, who has a special reason for rallying all women to reach the finish line and win the race. On a more personal note, I’d like to dedicate this to my mother-in-law, Helen Turner, who passed away in May. She was a keen sports lover; as a young girl she played basketball and later in life she rarely missed the chance to watch her grands and great-grands play any kind of sport. She was also, without a doubt, a huge Clemson sports fan. Hopefully she’ll be putting in a good word for the Tigers this year with the #1 Head Coach.

I have been reading skirt! off and on for about 10 years, since my daughter first found it in Charleston when she was studying at College of Charleston. I usually found it to be an interesting magazine that seemed to celebrate the sisterhood of being women. I didn’t always agree with the articles but there seemed to be an equal representation of all opinions. Unfortunately, I have of late found the magazine to be less “edgy” and more downright militant.

Who knew it was possible to fail camp?
Stacy Appel
C
amp Robin Hood congratulated itself on setting a superior example for young women by upholding a great many values my parents didn’t trust: rigid discipline, team spirit, Presbyterian church services on Sundays, grace before meals, and letter grades on everything from athletic prowess to bed-making. I have no idea why my mother chose it for me. Maybe the brochure featuring grainy-looking blackand-white photos of smiling campers on horseback or on stage reminded her of
her own childhood camp in Vermont. The elderly headmistress, Miss Ruland, waved us in from the front porch of the lodge. Regal in white shirt and slacks, wiry white hair pulled back in a tidy bun, she welcomed my parents on the steps with a hearty handshake and dazzling smile, scolding them lightly for getting me to camp a day late. She glanced at me once to ask my name, then busied herself charming my parents. It was as if I were entering a convent. A counselor was summoned to whisk me out of sight, and I was deposited, without a chance to say goodbye, inside the cavernous mess hall, where dozens of girls in white shirts and shorts were singing the Doxology. My fellow campers had a whole 24 hours on me, during which they’d settled into their respective cabins and made best friends. I suffered through an awkward lunch and then a brief orientation from the head counselor, which proved more daunting than exciting. The camp regime meant classes from sunup to sundown, punctuated by a formal midday rest hour during which total silence must be observed. Gum, bare feet, pajamas, curlers and magazines were forbidden outside the cabins, as was talking with stable boys or talking after lights out. Likewise, fibbing, cussing, namecalling and being late for anything. One soda and two pieces of candy from home might be ingested on Wednesdays and Saturdays, after cabin inspections. To foster Christian cooperation and friendship, campers were divided into two teams, Greens or Whites. I was assigned to the Whites. The team racking up the most points by summer’s end would win a Gold Cup and a glorious place in camp history. A substandard class grade in swimming or canoeing or a minor infraction of rules would subtract cherished points from the score. Camp Robin Hood thus ensured a venomous, blood-thirsty, finger-pointing battle every summer between two separate groups of little girls, who would remember well into adulthood that Nancy May was a Green and therefore despicable, or that Angie Ferris had been a White, redeeming her for all time despite a variety of annoying nervous tics and a habit of spraying milk out of her nose when she laughed. As summer began, I surprised myself with proficiency in sports like archery, riflery and canoeing, each requiring more intuition than agility. But I didn’t have a head for rules. There were too many, and I never learned what they were until I’d crossed the line. Public humiliation and petty retaliation were constant risks. During a sweltering rest hour in our cabin, I amused myself by tossing my teddy bear around on my knees. When the gong rang to signal the end of our rest period, a dozen girls sat up on their cots like a Greek chorus (Greens gleeful, Whites indignant) chanting, “Point LOST!”
When Harriet sneezed after lights out, my reflexive “Geseundheit” prompted furious glares from girls who knew I’d broken the silence rule again. Thankfully, no one could afford to lose another point by yelling at me. I accidentally said hello to a stable boy, drank a sip of another camper’s abandoned soda, took one soggy shoe off while canoeing to scratch my foot, and was late to Sunday dinner twice. Each mistake cost me. I was losing points faster than my teammates could earn them. “I wish you were a Green,” Harriet whispered to me sadly one night at Vespers. Unthinkingly, I’d blown bubbles with my gum in full view of the head counselor. “Me too,” I said, burying my burning face in my hymnal. I couldn’t wait for summer to be over. Who knew it was possible to fail camp? A few days before the end-of-camp awards ceremony in mid-August, I looked forward to cheering on my teammates at the most important riding meet at camp, in which prizes, points and honor could be earned. But, to my horror, headmistress Miss Ruland had decided on me as a last-minute replacement for Sissy Beal, a talented rider who broke her arm on a trail ride the day before. I didn’t dare tell anyone. The substitution made no sense—despite an entire summer’s efforts, I was a lousy equestrienne, terrified of trail rides, cantering and even the riding instructor, whom everyone else adored. I didn’t want to be in the horse show, and there was every chance I’d lose a last few points for the White team before final scores were tallied to declare the summer’s victor. I skipped breakfast the day of the meet and headed down to the stables, my stomach churning. I was paired with Shadow, a nervous gray mare no one else wanted to ride, and I waited miserably astride her until it was our turn to emerge into the ring. The starter sounded. Shadow bolted off exactly as I had feared and known she would, tripping past the other sedately trotting riders and picking up steam. Too fast, she was moving too fast. She startled, bucked when we neared the closed gate. As my hard hat fell off (how many points was that?), she broke into a run, and my left foot twisted in the stirrup. I began to slide sideways off her ample back, reins rippling out of my hands. I remember looking once at the ringside chairs, where the captain of the Green team sat pristine in her camp whites, smirking, and then at the hard, dusty ground below me. I wound my hands into Shadow’s mane and held on as she went around and around the ring. Harriet tugged me up to the lodge to call my mother from the camp office before dinner. I was almost too shocked to dial. I had won a blue ribbon. This bizarre feat surprised everyone except the riding instructor, who told me I earned it. And I was almost as happy when the Whites won the Gold Cup at the end of the summer, which kind of let me off the hook. When parents arrived to collect us again, Greens hugged Greens, Whites kissed Whites, crying. We made plans for mid-year visits. Though my mother had no comparison, not much of Camp Robin Hood actually stuck. Once home, I snuck candy between meals, went barefoot, drank sodas on Tuesdays and managed to break almost every camp rule and credo in less than a week. One blue ribbon is about all my parents got for their money, besides not having me underfoot all summer. But I did learn that one should never, ever underestimate the power of staying on the horse. And to this day, I know to say grace before just about everything, since there’s so much lying around unused.

“I just can’t do this...”
I
Rebecca Gummere
am broke. Dead broke. As I’ve looked for part-time work to augment my full-time income and pay down post-divorce credit card and tax debt, it feels like 1975 all over again. That year, I and thousands of other graduates entered the work force, college diplomas in hand, only to find a rolling tide of recession and unemployment. At the time I was living in a small town in southern Ohio with my older sister’s family. In exchange for room and board, I helped with chores and childcare for the three children and also cleaned house for several of my sister’s friends. Just to our north, in Columbus, dozens of my classmates had Real Jobs and shared awesome apartments. Anxious to be on my own, every Monday morning I boarded the Greyhound bus to Columbus and disembarked in the dingy terminal, sliding past street preachers and circumventing winos while I worked my way to the center of the city. I spent the day going door to door, looking for any available job, but hit a steady string of dead ends. One restaurant manager looked over my application, saying, “You’re overqualified for this job.” The idea of being overqualified caught me off guard. I had waited tables before; it was right there on my application. I had cleaned toilets, too, in the throes of what I thought was true love, because cleaning toilets at a sailing club in Connecticut was the only way for me to be near that beautiful boy for the whole summer. I had vacuumed and dusted and scrubbed rich people’s houses, worked as a hostess for private parties and cooked dinners for a man whose wife was “away at her mother’s.” I thought I would do just about anything in pursuit of my independence, but I got the chance to learn my limits, thanks to a friend of my brother-in-law. John practiced law in Columbus and restored old houses as a side business. We went out a couple of times, to downtown bars where we danced till we were sweaty, ending up in his Suburban where we necked in an alcoholic frenzy while his English springer spaniels licked our faces. We both knew this would not be a serious affair, but it was a lot of fun, and I grew to think he was wise and had my best interest at heart. So when he suggested I interview with a newly founded Columbus magazine, I perked up. I had my degree in American Studies, but my first love had always been writing. “What’s the name of the magazine?” I asked. “It’s called Hustler,” he said. I thought about that for a minute. “You mean like football?” There is still probably no other city in America that is so crazy about their football team as Columbus is about the Ohio State Buckeyes. John laughed, patting the top of my head as if I were his dumb younger sister. “Uh, no. Not football,” and he laughed again. “It’s a gentlemen’s magazine,” he said, enunciating his words. “Oh.” As the meaning sank in, I was caught in a push-pull. I couldn’t make enough to move out and live on my own by cleaning houses. Even at 21, I thought I had a pretty good idea what working at a gentlemen’s magazine would entail. But wouldn’t they need writers, too?
“Oh, heck yeah. I’m sure they do.” So I called the magazine and learned they were looking for an editorial assistant. I scheduled an interview, selected a businesslike dress and low heels, and a couple of days later boarded the bus back to Columbus. Using the crumpled city map I carried everywhere, I located the offices on Gay Street, and taking a deep breath, I walked through their door, thinking today might be my break into the world of writing. The first thing I noticed was the sickening smell of Pine-Sol, setting off little alarm bells in my brain. What were they trying to hide? At the bottom of a dark stairway, a sign with an arrow pointed me up toward “Hustler Magazine.” I took the steps two at a time, clattering my way to the second floor, and pushed through the office door. The antiseptic smell was gone, and I breathed a sigh of relief until I spied the large painting on the wall above the pretty blond receptionist. A nude woman, portrayed in shocking and clinical detail, peered at some distant focal point. Keeping my gaze down, I gave my name and took a seat, measuring the distance to the door. Then the receptionist called my name and said, “Come with me. You’ll be meeting with Althea.” I followed her willowy frame down the hallway and into an office where a bosomy dark-haired woman in a plunging knit top sat behind a cluttered desk. She stood to shake my hand. “I’m Althea Flynt,” she said and pointed at the wingback chair behind me. I sat as she began with a history of the Hustler empire, speaking of her husband, Larry, with obvious admiration. We discussed my limited job experience, and I recall her being attentive, even kind. Then she cupped her breasts in the most unselfconscious way and leaned forward, setting them on the desk as if she couldn’t wait to get the tiresome things out of her way, resting her elbows on either side with a sigh. While her loose breasts danced inside her knit top, she explained she needed someone to write responses to letters to the editor. She shoved a magazine across the desk and said, “Read one and answer it.” All the letters were from inmates at a nearby prison, written in graphic terminology. I recall responding in generalities, too embarrassed to be explicit. To my surprise, Althea offered me the job. I think I responded with a noncommittal “Oh,” and then trailed after her down another hall, to the office of the vice president, a middle-aged African-American man with sad eyes. Our conversation was brief, and he welcomed me to the team. As if in a dream, I thanked him, and he walked me back to the front where the receptionist gave me a cool, amused glance. He and I shook hands, and I scurried out the door. Two blocks away I found a phone booth and took a deep breath before calling the vice president. “I just can’t do this,” I told him in a halting voice. “I understand,” he said. Remembering his sad dark eyes, I knew he did. I caught the bus back home, thinking the first thing I would do when I got to my sister’s was take a long hot shower. I considered calling John to set him straight about Hustler, but I had a suspicion he already knew. Two things sprang to mind—first that I would not be going out with him again, and second, cleaning toilets did not seem so demeaning after all.

HE’S SO ORIGINAL
Roger Beasley is Pushing the Pink. As co-chair this year for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Roger has a special reason for championing the cause. “Everyone seems to be touched by breast cancer in a very personal way. My mother died from breast cancer at the very young age of 53, and my mother-in-law is currently recovering from a successful treatment for the disease.” Always on the go, Roger is the Senior Vice President and Director of Strategic Planning at Erwin-Penland, co-owner of Scratch on Augusta Road, husband to wife Traci and father to Grace (9) and Luke (7). “I am most proud of my beautiful family. Some may find that a cliché answer, but it’s true. I know how lucky I am.” What do you love about skirt magazine? “It’s a seriously relevant magazine that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Refreshing.” How do you feel wearing a skirt? “Like everyone I walked by was staring at me.
