I am taking online real estate and and need clarification as to how this works. Has to do with Home Owner's Insurance (Coinsurance clause) formula. The text says: Coinsurance Clause Most homeowners polices also have whats called a coinsurance clause. This clause requires that the homeowner have insurance that is equal to 80% of the homes replacement value. This does not include the price of the land. If an owner has this type of policy, he or she could make a claim for the full cost of the repair or replacement without deduction for depreciation. If the owner does not carry this type of insurance he or she carries less than the 80% figure any claim will be handled in either of these two ways: The loss will be settled for actual cash value. The loss will be prorated.

For example, if a persons home is insured for only 70% of its replacement value and the owner suffers a loss of $15,000, the insurance will pay $13,125. (70% 80% = .875 x $15,000 = $13,125) MY QUESTION: why do I not just multiply .70 to 15,000? why do i divide 70 by 80 and then multiply answer by 15000 is coverage is 70%? Also, what if coverage is 80%? Do I calculate 80/80=1x15000? or just .80x 15000?"
