from hearing loss, hearing impairment and deafness. The tutorial will cover the very basics of the sign language the alphabet. The tutorial and the game that follows are designed to be completed by children on there own who are of the age of eight and upwards. Adult assistant is recommended if you are under the age of eight. The Tutorial will outline the 26 different hand shapes that each represent a letter of the alphabet, followed by clues and hints that will help you remember which hand shape represents which letter. After you feel confident that you know the individual hand shapes and what letter they represent there’s a game designed to test what you have learned.

The figure above shows each the hand symbols with the letter they represent. The best way to remember each symbol is to try creating the symbol with your hand yourself. Also imagine the lower case shape for the letter. I will further break down each letter. This is the hand symbol for the letter “A”. Imagine the lower case letter ‘a’. The four fingers being the base of the letter and the thumb being the flick at the top.

This is the hand symbol for the letter “B”. Imagine the lower case letter ‘b’. The four fingers being the spine of the letter ‘b’ and the thumb being the curve at the bottom. This is the hand symbol for the letter “C”. Imagine the lower case letter ‘c’. This one is easy simply make the shape of the letter with your fingers and thumb, like your hand is round a cup. This is the letter ‘c’.

This is the hand symbol for the letter “D”. Image the lower case letter ‘d’. You finger being the main bridge of the letter. The letters ‘b’ and ‘d’ are similar in sound so are similar in shape image the ‘b’ with just one finger instead. This is the hand symbol for the letter “E”. Imagine the lower case letter ‘e’. Also thing about the hand symbol for the letter ‘c’ but tuck your thumb in and this creates the letter ‘e’ This is the hand symbol for the letter “f”. This one is quite difficult the best way to remember the hand symbol for this is that there are there main parts the the letter “F” so its three fingers. The is the hand symbol for the letter “G” the best way to remember this is to think about the lower case ‘g’ and also imagine your wrist and arm as being the bottom of the letter and creating a point shape with your finger.

This is the hand symbol for the letter “H” the best way to remember this is that the letter is to image the letter in your head. Then make it with your fingers. Imagine your pushing and button but you have to use two fingers. This is the symbol for the letter “I”. This one is easy imagine the letter in your head. Then make the letter with you with little finger tucking all other fingers in. This is the symbol for the letter “J”. This one is easy imagine the letter in your head. Then imagine the letter “I” symbol then make the letter with you with little finger tucking all other fingers in but changing the angle of your wrist to create a “J” shape from the top of your little finger to the bottom of your wrist. This is the symbol for the letter “K”. This one again isn’t too hard. Imagine the uppercase letter “k” in your head it has a two parts like a “V” on its side attacked to a “I” create this v with your top two fingers playing your thumb at the bottom of them underneath.

This is the symbol for the letter “L”. This is probably one of the easiest ones. With your left hand create the symbol with your finger and thumb. This is the symbol for the letter “M”. Create a claw like shape with your hand, leaving your thumb tucked in. This is the hand symbol for the letter “N” this is very much like the symbol for the letter “m” but instead of using four fingers just use your top two and tuck you thumb underneath. This is also similar to “h”. This is the symbol for the letter “O”. This along with “L” is probably the easiest. Simply create a circle with your fingers and thumb. This is the symbol for the letter “P” Again Imagine the letter. Then Point your top finger outwards and your second fingers down this create the hand shape for the letter “P”.

This is the Symbol for the letter “Q”. This one is quite difficult. Imagine the uppercase letter “Q” Create and open square with you’re finger and thumb. Leaving your third finger underneath to create the flick in the letter. This is the symbol for the letter “R”. The best way to remember this is to cross your fingers. Think also of the ‘Red Cross” symbol what is the same shape. This is the symbol for the letter “s”. This is an awkward one to remember. The best way to remember this is to think of soccer then associate that with a ball and then clench your fist to make a ball. This is the symbol for the letter “T”. This is also one that can be quite difficult. Imagine the letter symbol for ‘s” then leave your top finger sticking out. This is the symbol for the letter “U” this is the hand symbol for the letter “U”. This is just like the letter “H” and “M” but instead imagine

Create the shape of the letter with you two fingers and thumb. This is the symbol for the letter “W” this again is quite an easy one simply image the letter in your head and create it with your first three fingers all point upwards. This is the symbol for the letter “X” This one is quite difficult and the best way to remember it is to create and “X” with two fingers only, one from each hand then remove one finger. This is the symbol. This is the symbol for the letter “y” this is quite easy to remember. Imagine your arm as the base of the letter, to create to top part use your little finger and thumb to create and phone like shape.
