Y is for Yes Z is for Zebra Run through the meanings with your child start with Apple. Ask you child to shout out the letter they think of when they heard the word. This will get the child to think or the word and associate it with the letter. Running through it in order will teach your children the order of the alphabet. Once your child has understood the order of the alphabet start to test them. Stop shouting out the letters in order and randomly shout out random words for the child to associate with a letter. For example: “ Garden, Window, Apple, Mum” If you fee confident that you child understands the alphabet more start to change the words. Talk and teach your child to understand that each word your shouting out it’s the first letter what relates to the

alphabet. Start naming different words for each letter. Start again going in order of the alphabet and once your child has grasped that element start to randomize it. This should teach you child the very basics of the alphabet. To further teach your child the alphabets buy a blank A4 book. In this book with your child, go through and on each page write ta letter of the alphabet. Keep it in order and leave space at the bottom of each page. Make it as colorful as you want. After you and your child has wrote each letter of the alphabet in the blank space ask your child with your assistance and encouragement to write all the words they know beginning with that letter. This may be quite limited at the moment as they will of only learned a few letters but keeping this book and using it regularly. As your child grows up will help develop there reading and writing and as well as teaching them the alphabet.

Other tasks to do to help you children learn the alphabet. A fun game to play with your children whilst you’re driving (always be careful). Play the ABC game. Ask your child to find the letters from names of surroundings and items. For example you start with the letter A if you see an Ariel, a car Ariel in front for example. Then ask your child to name a item they can see what beings with ‘B’ and so forth. Spelling One of the most effect and traditional ways of teaching your child to spell is memorizing spelling words. Start by choosing some simple words I will list some below to start with. Then ask and explain to your child how to visualize the word in their mind. Then ask them to close their eyes and picture the word in there head. Splitting each word letter by letter. Then ask your child to spell the word aloud (some children find this easier with their eyes still closed). Check to see if they are

correct. If they got it wrong try doing the task with them and when closing your eyes say the word out aloud saying eat letter slowly. This should help your child take in each letter individually and piece together to make the word. Repeat this procedure with many different types of words. Don’t try to many at once. Words: Car, Foot, Tile, Bin, Road, Ball, Shed. Other, Stand, Today, Wash, around, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Some of these may be American spelling of words. Make sure if your learning the English language that you correct these for your child. Getting your child to write words down is very good way to teach your child spelling of specific words. This method should be used with more complex words and in some cases you can start the word off for your child for example ask your child to write the word brain down. They should start by visualizing the word saying it out loud then writing the word down. If your child is struggling to write the word down give them some extra help and write the first two letters down for them. If they still struggle to finish the sentence off write the rest of the letters down in a scrambled order. Also say the word out loud breaking up each letter for them.
