Sherman’s Community Impact With more than 3,500 alumni caring for patients around the globe, an on-campus clinic that provides 27,000 patient visits per year to our local community, and a lively campus with more than 400 students and 100 employees, Sherman College of Chiropractic strives daily to achieve its vision of Adjusting the World for a Better Future. But how well are we doing, and how can we define our true impact? Sherman College recently compiled survey findings, institutional data and many examples of outreach efforts in its first annual Community Impact Report, which was released in October 2020. The report features specific examples of how we are making an impact through five key areas: strategic partnerships/initiatives, events, health care, community service and philanthropy. Members of the college community focus their service primarily on issues and organizations dedicated to these causes and many more:

“This report shows what we have know for many years — that we are making the world a better place through chiropractic and service to humanity as we fulfill our mission and vision,” said Ohmar T. Land, D.M., Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations. Students learn that becoming a contributing part of the community and sharing their gifts with the community is good for them and good for chiropractic. But more importantly, those who serve experience a sense of purpose and the joy of giving back.

Mary Black Foundation Awards $15,000 Grant Sherman College was one of 19 nonprofit organizations serving Spartanburg County that recently received new grants from the Mary Black Foundation. This first-time grant from the organization will support the Chiropractic Health Center, which provides chiropractic care for the local community through approximately 27,000 patient visits annually. “During these challenging times and beyond, it is a top priority for Sherman College to build more strategic relationships throughout Spartanburg to share our resources and services. We are grateful for the support the Foundation has provided to our Health Center and for their confidence in us as we continue to care for our community,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar T. Land, D.M.

The foundation’s most recent grant cycle focused on the systemic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the basic needs of individuals and nonprofits, mental health, and the growing health and education lag. The Mary Black Foundation has committed to providing more than $3.1 million in grants for 2020.

Randy Baze, D.C. RANDY BAZE, D.C., ’83, GREW UP IN A HORSE RACING FAMILY IN WASHINGTON STATE. PERHAPS THE ONLY THING THAT PREVENTED HIM FROM BECOMING A JOCKEY LIKE ALL OF HIS SIBLINGS WAS A TEENAGE GROWTH SPURT. Nonetheless, he spent his teenage years being thrown from horses and visiting medical doctors. “I went to the University of Washington and became a member of the rowing team,” Dr. Baze says, “and my activity level went down. When I worked with Dad with the horses, I went into a stupor, couldn’t sleep, had blind spots, ringing in my ears, had stomach upsets and was sad.” When medical doctors couldn’t seem to help with his health problems, his mother took him to Greg Bartlett, D.C. Initially a skeptic, Baze’s experience with Bartlett changed his mind completely about chiropractic — and changed the direction of his life. X-rays revealed that two bones were misaligned. The first adjustment helped alleviate Baze’s pain; after a month of treatment all his symptoms had disappeared completely. He continued to visit the chiropractor regularly after that to maintain his renewed health. Bartlett accepted an invitation from Baze to visit the racetrack and what happened next was eye-opening.

6 www.sherman.edu

The chiropractor adjusted one of the racehorses. A pre-med major at the University of Washington, Baze was still searching for his direction in life. That moment at the racetrack is when he decided to consider chiropractic as a profession and discovered Sherman College. At Sherman, he took a class in animal adjusting and knew he had found a niche that brought together his love of animals and a desire to heal people through chiropractic. When he graduated from Sherman College in 1983, he initially worked with Bartlett before opening his own practice near the racetrack so he could work with his dad’s horses. Baze’s chiropractic practice took an unexpected turn when he received a request to adjust a dog whose owner planned to euthanize the animal because it had a paralyzed front leg. After several adjustments, the dog could move its legs and eventually walked again. With a tip from the delighted owner, the local newspaper published a story about the dog’s miraculous recovery. “The next day,” Baze says, “the phones were ringing off the hook.” After that, he was inundated with owners seeking chiropractic care for their animals. With as many as 100 pet patients a week along with 100 human patients a week, Baze finally set up a special entrance for his animal patients. “I think this was just what was meant to be,” Baze says of the animal practice that grew out of his lifelong love and care of racehorses. “When I started, no one was adjusting animals because it took too much time away from their human practice,” he says of his pioneering work with animal chiropractic. “Now, colleges are doing much more with animal chiropractic.”

In the beginning, animal owners often paid him in cakes, pies, and cookies, so he decided to set up a donation box for them to place whatever monetary payment they wanted to make. All the money placed in that box was earmarked as a donation to Sherman College – a tradition Baze still upholds. The donation box was the start of his philanthropy and a novel way to show appreciation to his alma mater. To date, donations to Sherman College from Baze’s animal patients exceed $80,000.

“I’m always going to do what I do, take care of people and animals, support Sherman College and answer the call when I’m asked to speak.” - Randy Baze, D.C.,’83

Over the years, Baze’s career in chiropractic has brought him recognition. In 1983 he was named Sherman Regent of the Year, and in 1998, he was named to the Chiropractic Knights of the Round Table. In 2002, he received the Chiropractic Sentinel Award and the Washington State Chiropractic Pioneer Award. “For me it’s pretty simple; chiropractic saved my life,” Baze says. “That is a debt I can never repay; helping people and animals all day is just part of the deal.”

Susan Newlin SUSAN NEWLIN FORGOT ABOUT HAVING REGISTERED WITH AN EMPLOYMENT AGENCY, SO SHE WAS SURPRISED TO GET A CALL ASKING HER TO INTERVIEW FOR A JOB AS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO THE VICE PRESIDENT AT A NEW CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE. She was working toward a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration at the time, but she accepted the appointment. “I knew nothing about chiropractic and decided to go for the interview on a whim. I was curious. Well, as the saying goes, the rest is history.” Newlin was offered the job on the spot, and she accepted. She was eager to learn more about this new type of healthcare. Fortunately, all employees were required to take an introductory course in chiropractic philosophy, taught by Reggie Gold, D.C. After that, she was hooked. Thirty-seven years later, Newlin retired after holding numerous positions at Sherman as the institution grew from fledgling school to one of the most recognized chiropractic colleges in the country. She remembers fondly the many hours she spent with Thom Gelardi, D.C., the college’s founder and first president, asking questions which he patiently answered. She embraced the Sherman College philosophy and became “a rebel with a cause.”

8 www.sherman.edu

Before long, she was promoted to director of admissions, serving from 1974 until 1981, at which time she became head of the Department of Development, overseeing fundraising, alumni affairs, public relations and publications. “That is when I realized the importance of supporting the college through financial means and revived the Board of Regents, which became and remains the major financial support group for the college,” Newlin says. “I joined the board then and continue as a Regent contributor to this day, earning lifetime Regent status.” Eventually, she returned to the Office of Admissions, charged with reversing a decline in enrollment resulting from a gap in accreditation by the Council of Chiropractic Education, the agency most states required for licensure. She chaired the self-study process for the Council as well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. “Those responsibilities gave me a deep understanding of every aspect of the college.”

“Giving is not only good for whatever or whoever I am supporting, it is good for my soul.” - Susan Newlin Newlin made a “silent personal pledge” to become a member of the Heritage Society whose members have contributed a minimum of $100,000. Realizing they were short of that goal when she retired, the couple pledged $10,000 a year to the President’s Circle and finally reached Heritage Society status in 2018.

Newlin went on to serve as vice president for enrollment services and then vice president for planning and assessment, where she directed strategic planning and the accreditation reaffirmation process, and finally, serving as vice president of institutional advancement until her retirement in 2011. Upon retirement, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree, a tribute she says she will always treasure. “Sherman College has been both my and my husband Baron’s philanthropic priority,” Newlin says. “I quickly realized that it was so much easier to ask for donations if I was a donor myself. So began my long history of donations to the college through the payroll deduction plan. We also contributed to a number of capital projects and other campaigns over the years.”

“I really can’t put into words how important Sherman College has been in my life and how honored I have been to support the principles upon which Sherman was founded,” Newlin says. “Being a financial contributor was one important part of that. It is one thing to say you support something, quite another to put your money where your mouth is.” As generous as she has been to Sherman College, Newlin is also an avowed nature lover, concerned about the environment and the health of the planet. “This fits with my respect for chiropractic’s contribution to the overall health of the human body,” she says of her contributions to organizations dedicated to the preservation of nature. Her most recent passion is Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve in Spartanburg. “I have always been a giver to causes I believe in and to those in need,” she says. “If I am honest about why, I would say, selfishly, because it makes me feel really good to support something that will outlast my limited footprint on earth.”

Marlene Mahipat, D.C. MARLENE MAHIPAT, D.C., A 2001 GRADUATE OF SHERMAN COLLEGE, CREDITS HER EARLY LIFE IN TRINIDAD AND HER STRUGGLE TO ESCAPE THE POVERTY OF HER SMALL VILLAGE WITH INSTILLING A DRIVE TO SUCCEED AND TO HELP OTHERS WHO ARE STRUGGLING. Mahipat came to the United States in 1990 with $300, two suitcases and a burning desire for an education. All of the successful people she had observed were educated, and she was determined to get the education she needed to pursue her dreams. In that quest, she has established her own business and created two successful philanthropic organizations. “I grew up in poverty,” she says. “Once I became a chiropractor, I felt the need to help those less fortunate than I was ... who were where I was in life when I struggled myself.” She adds, “I feel motivated and driven in my personal life to help others through charity and compassion and to heal them in whatever capacity I am able to, whether it is financially, spiritually, mentally or physically.” After graduating from Sherman College, Mahipat moved to Maryland, where she worked for a healthcare provider for a year before setting up her own modest practice, “with one piece of equipment!” she quips. Her practice now provides chiropractic and a holistic approach to wellness to approximately 100 patients a week at her office in Randallstown. But that busy schedule hasn’t kept her from serving her community in other ways. 10 www.sherman.edu

On her first vacation to Mexico, she remembers seeing a woman with two young children sleeping on the streets. The desperation and pain that she saw in the woman’s eyes reminded her of her own mother and her struggles. She resolved to help people who were struggling to survive. In 2006, Mahipat founded Helping Orphans Prosper Everywhere (H.O.P.E.), a nonprofit organization providing services to children and families in need. She also volunteered as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels, where she noticed that many people she visited shared the food she brought with their pets because they couldn’t afford pet food. That observation inspired Mahipat to start a second nonprofit, People Letting Every Animal Survive Euthanasia (P.L.E.A.S.E.), that provides assistance to animals, pets and pet owners and works to prevent otherwise healthy animals from being euthanized. “I have found healing people to be most rewarding, and knowing I made a difference in a person’s or animal’s life,” she says. “I am a very strong believer in healing through service.” The dedicated philanthropist fills backpacks with school supplies for needy students each school year, delivers gifts to area nursing homes and even celebrates her own October birthday by hosting a Halloween pizza party for children at a local shelter. Mahipat is a success now, but she has vivid memories of the times she didn’t have tools to succeed, when she didn’t have parents or anyone else to turn to, when she was hungry and forced to sleep on the streets.

“When you think your life is bad, try helping the homeless and the hungry and the orphaned,” Mahipat says. “It grounds you.” Serving others has become both a professional and personal goal for Mahipat, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed in the greater community. She was one of the Top 100 Minority Business Enterprise Award winners, a tribute to business owners in Maryland and the surrounding states.

“I have found healing people to be most rewarding, and knowing I made a difference in a person’s or animal’s life. I am a very strong believer in healing through service.” - Marlene Mahipat, D.C.,’01 The Center Club’s Women in Business group named her a 2019 Trailblazer for her work effecting positive change in her community. In 2020, she received the Baltimore County Women Making a Difference Award. These are only the most recent recognitions for a professional and personal life well-lived in the service of others. Of course, Mahipat has a dream for the future, too. “My envisioned future would be a retirement plan,” she says. “Instead of doing chiropractic as business, I would do it as a charity for those who were in need and unable to afford it so my chiropractic life and philanthropic life would be one and the same, much as they are now.”

Russell Goff, D.C. After his visit to Sherman College, Goff was sold on the school and its philosophy, and when the trio returned to Wyoming, Natalee also decided to enroll at Sherman College – six months before her brother. Goff found his calling when he was introduced to the EPIC technique, a chiropractic approach that analyzes and corrects upper cervical subluxations by sound wave, and determined to work toward incorporating it into Sherman College’s offerings. Goff ’s passion for EPIC and his desire to serve Sherman were intertwined, leading him to found the EPIC Club to educate others in the technique.

TEACHING STUDENTS TO GIVE BACK IS A BASIC TENET OF SHERMAN COLLEGE’S PHILOSOPHY, AND STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONSIDER HOW THEY CAN BEST CONTRIBUTE TO THE COLLEGE AND PROFESSION AFTER GRADUATION. Russell Goff, D. C., a 2019 graduate, embraced that message and acted on it while he was still a student. A Wyoming native, Goff was studying physiology at the University of Wyoming when he considered a career in chiropractic. He, his sister, Natalee, and his mother piled into their family vehicle and set out to visit schools, logging more miles than he likes to remember on what he calls “an epic cross-country adventure.”

12 www.sherman.edu

A turning point for Goff came in his third quarter when EPIC founder Stan Pierce Jr., D.C., was a guest lecturer in his upper cervical technique and nutrition classes. “As I dove down deep into the study of the technique, the intricacies and the nuances,” he says, “it quickly became obvious to me that EPIC was going to be the technique I would use for the rest of my life.” Goff ’s first goal was to bring EPIC into the outpatient clinic and ultimately to create “brand equity” on campus. Over the next two years, he established the EPIC Club, hosted events on- and off-campus, scheduled guest lectures and built a core group of students interested in learning more about EPIC. With the encouragement of Assistant Professor Christine Theodossis, D.C., ’10, DCCJP, also an EPIC proponent, he was able to build momentum and interest among students, resulting in an elective class being introduced into the curriculum.

Goff was able to leverage his growing relationship with EPIC to benefit Sherman College, even facilitating a visit from Shark Tank’s Kevin Harrington as a speaker. Goff later attended his first EPIC Bootcamp in Clearwater, FL and became a driving force in deepening the relationship between Sherman and EPIC. Before he graduated, Goff represented Sherman at the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Discussions among the student delegates from 27 chiropractic schools from around the world were eye-opening, Goff says, and gave him a global view of the profession. After graduation, Goff became an associate doctor with EPIC in Clearwater, primarily working behind the scenes to coordinate and prepare the Symposium, their largest event of the year. He also works as the point person for vendors, presenters, visiting doctors and students, serving as the student liaison for three different chiropractic colleges and their EPIC clubs. Partially thanks to Goff ’s efforts, the college’s Chiropractic Health Center recently became the first to feature an EPIC Integrity

“My philanthropic activities were simply an extension of who I have become through the years.” - Russell Goff, D.C.,’19

Genesis 1000 adjusting instrument — a piece of equipment that Goff calls “a huge breakthrough for table-based, percussion soundwave adjusting instruments.” Growing up in Wyoming, Goff was a member of the National FFA Organization (formerly Future Farmers of America). In ninth grade, he was introduced to the FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” The motto has guided him ever since. “‘Living to serve’ kept my heart in the right frame of reference. When you earn to live, it is easier to live to serve,” Goff says. “My philanthropic activities were simply an extension of who I have become through the years. To me, reaching out, serving, connecting people, setting up events – it was all about ‘living to serve.’”

Sherman’s First Virtual Commencement Celebrates June, September Graduates

Fifty-one students from around the world celebrated their graduation from Sherman College in Spartanburg, SC, on Saturday, September 19, 2020, during the college’s first ever virtual commencement ceremony. Sherman’s 137th commencement was a shared ceremony for June and September 2020 graduates. The ceremony premiered on the college’s Facebook and YouTube platforms and featured award presentations, speeches, and a photo presentation of the graduates.

Because the college was unable to host a traditional ceremony, it sought to use the digital format to its benefit, creating a personalized program. “We were able to provide a more intimate ceremony with personal touches,” said Vice President for Student Affairs LaShanda Hutto Harris, MSW. “Students participated in the production by submitting photos to be premiered in the graduate presentation, and our elected student announcer read the names of her classmates during the program.” Sherman College Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Terry E. Lancaster, M.A., presented the commencement address; she teaches courses in anatomy and physiology, osteology, integration of human systems and more. Frank Vaught Jr., D.C., delivered the charge to the graduates. Vaught is the founder and owner of Health on Earth Wellness Centers, LLC, in Alsip, IL, and a founding partner of Evoke Chiropractic Coaching.

The Sherman College Alumni Association has been busy this fall. Working to connect current students with Sherman alumni, the association has hosted virtual informational panels for students on topics like associateships, office buildouts, and commercial real estate. The association has more in-person and virtual events planned for 2021, and we look forward to helping students achieve their personal and practice goals. A new project the association is thrilled to announce is Mentoring Our Pride. This alumni mentorship program will match a current student to an Alumni Association member who will provide encouragement, guidance, and mentorship throughout their time as a student at Sherman College. Personal connection is more important than ever in a world still social distancing, and studies show that students with mentors are more likely to complete their program than those without guidance. The Sherman College community is always quick to help students, and we can think of no better way than to offer support, wisdom and reassurance.

We Want to Hear from You! Alumni, we want to hear about your honors, awards, office openings, births/adoptions, weddings, and any other special life events via our online form https://tinyurl.com/SendAlumniNews.

The Value of a Chiropractic Degree? One thousand adventures. We spoke with Cassandra Peterson, D.C., ’08, owner of Island Family Chiropractic in Kapolei, HI, about what chiropractic means to her. Following is an excerpt of that conversation.

How has chiropractic changed your life? Chiropractic has given me an outlet to excel in a way I never thought possible for myself. I was given the opportunity to develop my skills at something which has given me the confidence to know that no matter what happens in life, I always have great value to offer.

How would you describe the value of your chiropractic degree? This is an easy question. When I Google value, what comes up is: “the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.” I think the value is as good as you make of it as your life goes on. When I graduated from Sherman, I spent a year building a practice. I tried to sell it after a year for $50K. Location, goodwill, and equipment were all valuable. No one bought my practice. I spent the next three years on a chiropractic adventure in Asia. I made nothing beyond my living costs, but I experienced one thousand adventures. I consider this invaluable. Based on those experiences, I was able to build a multi-million dollar practice in Hawaii. So my simple answer to how I would describe the value of my chiropractic degree is: “highly.”

“In a nutshell, we, as philosophically minded members of the chiropractic profession, need to protect and cradle our very special profession. It is always susceptible. I [have been] strong-armed to change what chiropractic meant to me. I ultimately couldn’t do it.” - Cassandra Peterson, D.C., ’08

What is the best part of your job? My favorite part of the job is when I randomly answer the phone and hear the need in someone’s voice, especially someone who is doubting that chiropractic will work for them. When I can help the most difficult case I’ve ever seen, someone who can barely stand to be touched, who then shows incredible hope for their own future; this is my cherry on top.

Alumni Association Presents Associateships 101 Panel Sherman College Alumni Association President and Director of Continuing Education Jillian Farrell, D.C., ’09, led a panel of doctors familiar with all aspects of an associateship in a live virtual Q&A for current students. During the panel, Sherman College students heard answers to all types of questions about associateships to help them decide if this might be the right path for them after graduation. 22 www.sherman.edu

The panel included Kimberly Fielder, D.C., ’06, Peter Kevorkian, D.C., and Charles Tucker, D.C., ’20. Each panelist offered a different perspective through his or her experiences with associateships, whether that be associating with a doctor, going through the negotiation phase, or being the doctor looking to hire an associate. The Alumni Association was pleased to offer this program to Sherman students as it expands its outreach.

ICA Council on Upper Cervical Care Honors Sherman Alumni Rush and Browning The ICA Council on Upper Cervical Care recently honored two Sherman College alumni with awards. Pioneer graduate and retired long-serving Sherman College Associate Professor Perry Rush, D.C., ’76, received the B.J. Palmer Lifetime Achievement Award, and Associate Professor and Technique Department Chair Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, D.C.C.J.P., was named Upper Cervical Researcher of the Year. Rush is a 1976 Sherman College pioneer graduate. Upon graduation, he taught at Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic for two years at the request of Dr. Reggie Gold. Rush returned to Spartanburg in 1980 to join the Sherman College faculty and continued to teach and serve in private practice for more than 30 years, until his retirement in 2011. “The future of our profession and chiropractic colleges is only as good as the faculty and staff that make up those institutions,” the Council noted in its announcement. “So it is with our greatest appreciation that we award Dr. Perry Rush with the B.J. Palmer Lifetime Achievement Award for being a beacon of light in serving to guard the sacred trust, and shape the future of specific upper cervical chiropractic for generations to come.”

Perry Rush, D.C.

Jaime Browing, D.C.

Browning, a 2009 Sherman alumna, presented the Research Methods module for the Diplomate in Craniocervical Junction Procedures, which provided a 12-hour bird’s eye view of the components to competent research. She realized that the chiropractic field needs to understand how to find and recognize quality research before they can create quality research; thus, she created this module that takes candidates from consumer of research to producer of research.

Browning serves as the research chair of the Upper Cervical Council. Her role is to support the council and DCCJP candidates through reviewing research design, finding articles for literature reviews, and giving guidance on proper human protections. Her dedication and positive influence as chair of the research committee and many other roles distinguished her as the Upper Cervical Researcher of the Year.

Chiropractic Profession Mourns the Sherman College Family Mourns Loss of Dr. Stavroula Andrinopoulos the Loss of Dr. Tony Duke The Sherman College community and the chiropractic profession are deeply saddened by the loss of Stavroula Andrinopoulos, D.C., in July 2020. Andrinopoulos graduated summa cum laude from Sherman College in 2006 and served in the Chiropractic Health Center as a case doctor from 2016-2019. Andrinopoulos is remembered by many as a kind and compassionate colleague, doctor and friend. From 2007-2015, Andrinopoulos and her husband, Paul Soler, D.C., ’06, owned a practice in her hometown of Kalamata, Greece. Her biggest joy in practice was working with children, and at one point she adjusted children and expectant mothers exclusively. Alumni and friends shared their memories of Andrinopoulos on the college’s Facebook page. “She was a wonderful, caring person and colleague,” posted Sherman College Radiology Department Chair and Professor of Clinical Sciences Laura Greene-Orndorff, D.C., ’95. “My thoughts and prayers are extended to Dr. Soler and family.” Alumni memories: https://tinyurl.com/AndMemories

With great sadness, the Sherman College community mourns the loss of Tony Duke, Ph.D., who passed away in July 2020. Often referred to by students as “Duke University,” he served on the Sherman faculty from 1980 until his retirement in 2017. He taught Neuroanatomy I and II, Neuro/ Muscle Physiology, and Endocrinology. “Tony was one of a kind,” said Sherman College Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P. “I knew him as my teacher, later as my colleague and eventually as my friend. It was an honor to get to know him.” Duke is remembered not only as a brilliant teacher, but also as someone who loved to travel and learn about other cultures and groups of people. Duke touched the lives of many and helped shape his students into great chiropractors. His work not only impacted those on the Sherman College campus, but the chiropractic profession as a whole. Duke has two children: a son, Morgan, and daughter, Caroline. SUPPORT FOR OUR CAUSE

When we find an issue or problem close to our hearts and feel strongly enough to want to do something about it, we should be looking for the best ways to support that cause. In 2020, we did not have to look far, as the year provided ample opportunities for the entire world to support a cause and make a difference. We want to see the fruits from our labors, or we want to see positive affirmation that we are making a contribution. It isn’t just about donating when we receive a year-end request in the mail – it’s about making a positive impact.

“This cause you support allows Sherman College to attract and enroll prospective students, retain current scholars and graduate successful doctors of chiropractic.” – Ohmar T. Land, D.M.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations

The main way to truly support a cause is to learn all the intricacies of the cause itself, what the main beliefs are and the impact the cause can have on the situation they are working to help or prevent. When you have all of the information available on the cause you are supporting, you will be able to raise awareness of the cause. This can be done in so many ways, and not just financially – you can contribute your time or talents (volunteering) and your leadership (serving on boards or committees). Of course, if you have some cash at your disposal, money is always a useful way to provide resources to further the cause. It doesn’t have to be a great deal of money; every little bit will help support a cause. As for our cause here at Sherman College, this is our opportunity to thank each donor listed for their support. This cause you support allows Sherman College to attract and enroll prospective students, retain current scholars and graduate successful doctors of chiropractic. The impact you make helps students during the pandemic and beyond, reduces the financial burdens of students to fund their education, and helps educate and support the next generation of citizens who will care for our communities. I encourage you to share the impact you have made at Sherman College and invite others to join you in the cause. Now, more than ever, it is important to celebrate how much you and Sherman College have achieved because you cared enough to give. Let’s continue to make an impact together. With all good wishes,

Ohmar T. Land, D.M. Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations

Committing to Sherman College for the Long Haul Gordon Brown Celebrates 99th Birthday, Visits Scallon Hall Retired chiropractor, Regent and honorary Sherman College Board member Dr. Gordon Brown recently paid a visit to Scallon Hall to see all the upgrades and changes happening on campus. Brown celebrated his 99th birthday this summer. Gordon Brown and the late Helen McPike Brown have supported and contributed generously to Sherman College in many ways over the years. Among the many ways they supported the college were serving as Regents, making a generous estate commitment to the Endowment Trust, donating their home in Arizona to fund and construct the Brown House and Museum on the college’s campus, and setting up a $225,000 charitable gift annuity with Sherman College as the beneficiary. “Although no one could question the Browns’ financial commitment to Sherman College, I believe their most valuable contributions have been their support, their guidance, and their loyalty,” said Sherman President Edwin Cordero, D.C., of the couple in 2018, when the college named them Regents of the Year.

Double Down with Dr. Fehl

Corporate Matching Gifts Can Double Your Donation to Sherman What if you could not only support Sherman College, but also have your employer help by doubling your donation? That’s what Bill Fehl, D.C., ’83, and his wife, Jeannie, did to multiply their impact at Sherman College through her employer’s gift matching program. “We support Sherman College primarily because it is good people educating others to do good work that no one else is doing: subluxation correction,” Fehl explained about the couple’s commitment to support the college. “It is a vital work, and even more so at this time in Earth’s history. Sherman College encourages people to think and to grow beyond the education of other schools, beyond what we hear on television or in other media.” Corporate matching gift programs are charitable giving programs set up by corporations in which companies match donations made by their employees to eligible nonprofit organizations. For example, if a college supporter works for Bank of America and donates $500 to Sherman College, Bank of America will double the donation by also contributing $500 to the college. Thousands of companies offer matching gift programs.

Fehl said it was in his first quarter as a student in 1980 that he realized his desire to be a part of campus. “I have been fortunate enough to have taught during each of the administrations Sherman has fielded,” he said of his experience as a faculty member since 1996. “Each has successfully progressed on the shoulders of its predecessors. Our current administration, led by Dr. Cordero, is constantly and cautiously refitting this vessel, and it is now headed for heights that have never been reached in Spartanburg and the world.” Fehl encourages those who may have been out of touch to reconnect with Sherman College. “This is the time, and this is the place,” he said. If you have not been here in a decade or two or three, prepare to be amazed!” Check with your employer about matching gifts, or contact Development Coordinator Mary Watts (mwatts@sherman.edu or 800-849-8771, ext. 267) for details.

Standing by the Principles Puerto Rican D.C.s Join Forces to Make Their Mark at Sherman For many, the opportunity to make their mark on the Sherman College campus is a fun way to leave a legacy while supporting principled chiropractic education. This is precisely the idea behind the college’s 33 Principles sponsorships. These feature graphics throughout Scallon Hall make up a symbolic spine using Stephenson’s 33 Principles of Chiropractic. This giving opportunity attracted four doctors of chiropractic and Sherman College supporters in Puerto Rico. Ricardo Alverez, D.C., Eva Sepulveda, D.C., Frances Bigas-Morales, D.C., and Lee Cardona, D.C., combined efforts to sponsor Principle 9, the Amount of Force Created by Intelligence. Alvarez says supporting chiropractic is “a must,” but finding the right place for

support was key. “Only a few institutions are providing values like this for the next generation of chiropractors,” he shared. “Our support to Sherman College’s program will keep our chiropractic sacred trust guarded.” Sepulveda, a former dietitian who changed careers after marrying a chiropractor, added, “I love the chiropractic philosophy and what we stand for. Sherman is the only college that really stands by the teachings of our founding fathers and teaches the real philosophy, art and science of chiropractic.”

Pictured counterclockwise from top: Ricardo Alverez, the doctors of Grupo Quiropráctico de Guaynabo, and Eva Sepulveda.

The principles of the profession are what attracted Cardona to give to this effort at Sherman College. “We chose chiropractic because its principles and science go beyond what almost everyone thinks and understands,” he said. “We chose to support Sherman College because it maintains the foundation and principles of the practice, and it teaches them to every graduate.” The combined support of these doctors makes a positive impact on the student experience at Sherman College and helps provide for the future of chiropractic education. CBCT, EPIC Instruments Bring Newest Technology to Sherman College Health Center Two recent equipment additions to Sherman College’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center are bringing the newest technology to student learning and patient care.

to study the human spine and vertebral subluxation more in-depth, while offering care to our patients that is more focused and specific than we ever imagined.”

Sherman is now the first chiropractic college in the United States to bring cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to its radiology department and the first to feature an EPIC Integrity Genesis 1000 adjusting instrument.

The Integrity Genesis 1000 is a high-quality adjusting instrument from Evolutionary Percussive Instrument Corrections (EPIC) which allows for extremely specific and gentle chiropractic adjustments.

“We are proud to be the first chiropractic college to incorporate both CBCT imaging and the Integrity Genesis 1000 adjusting instrument into our curriculum,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P. “Our radiology and chiropractic technique faculty played key roles in promoting these opportunities for the college.”

“Adding new technologies that make chiropractic care more effective further enhances our doctor of chiropractic program and increases engagement and research opportunities within the profession and the community,” said Assistant Professor Christine Theodossis, D.C., ’10, DCCJP.

CBCT is a radiographic imaging method that allows accurate, three-dimensional imaging of hard tissue structures and is commonly used in modern dental x-ray procedures. CBCT’s emergence in medical diagnostic imaging makes it an exciting addition to chiropractic radiographic analysis. “Advanced imaging, like this CBCT unit, presents many opportunities for our school, our field, and our clinic patients,” said Associate Professor and Technique Department Chair Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, DCCJP. “Sherman College will have the ability

Association’s (ICA) Council on Upper Cervical Care. The Integrity Genesis 1000 is a generous gift from EPIC Clinics, coordinated by its founder, Stan Pierce Jr., D.C. “Our EPIC team chose to make this substantial donation because of Sherman College’s commitment to subluxation-based chiropractic care, as well as our mutually shared vision for the future of chiropractic,” said EPIC Clinics founder Stan Pierce Jr. “At EPIC, we understand that shaping the future of chiropractic and creating global access to subluxation-based chiropractic care requires more than just getting great results in our individual clinics,” Pierce explained. “Achieving bigger goals requires bigger sacrifices, and our EPIC community embraces this role. Donating the Integrity Genesis adjusting instrument is simply part of an ongoing effort to support chiropractic students in receiving a top-level education.”

CloseForChiro Doctors Give $10,000 to Student Emergency Fund When donors make a gift to Sherman College, they can be assured that their generosity benefits the future of chiropractic education. Often, certain funds and giving options resonate with certain donors.

CloseForChiro Founder and CEO Daniel Bai, D.C., said the purpose of this fund aligns well with the core values of his company, which seeks to support causes congruent with its purpose.

That was the case with our Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund and a group of doctors at CloseForChiro, a mastermind private community of chiropractors founded by Daniel Bai, D.C.

“Philanthropy has always been a core value at CloseForChiro,” Bai shared. “Our goal for the profession has always been to perpetuate the chiropractic principles, the practice and the business. We selected Sherman College as the recipient of a $10,000 gift for the Sherman Pride Student Fund because we believe this will serve the student body directly and will help support and optimize the educational experience at Sherman.”

The Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund support students facing financial difficulties by helping to meet their most crucial needs. Whether their concerns are food, unexpected utility bills, childcare needs, clinic supplies or essential school supplies, gifts to this fund provide students with an emergency grant to ease their financial burdens and uncertainty.

Bai noted that CloseForChiro aims to support and help evolve the profession, and the group has a vested interest in the quality of new chiropractors entering the industry. “We are confident that this gift supports that vision,” he said.

Emergency Fund Supports Students in Need Fund Recipient Huizhen Lim, 14th quarter In a world that seems to have no constants, each day can present a new set of challenges for Sherman College students to overcome. But thanks to those who have given to the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund, Sherman College students can find a source of support and encouragement. “This fund is a lifeline,” said 14th quarter student Hui Zhen Lim. “I was planning to return home to shadow a local office for my last quarter, but COVID-19 threw those plans out of the window, and I ended up staying in the U.S., which incurred additional costs like rent and food.” Despite uncertain times, Sherman College students have found one constant:

a chiropractic community to encourage and support them. Students have the certainty that if a need arises, they are able to apply for up to a $500 grant (not a loan) from the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund. “I’m a fortunate recipient and sincerely thank all donors for their generosity. One of the few things I am certain of is that I can always count on my Sherman family when things get tough!” said Lim. Thanks to the support of our donors, we have already raised more than $30,000 for our students, and we are excited to continue building this fund to meet their current and future needs.

Chiropractic Patients Give Back to Support the Profession While many of Sherman College’s supporters are doctors of chiropractic, some come to support the college through their experiences as patients. “I’m a lifelong chiropractic patient, and I believe that chiropractic care is the best way to support the optimal functioning of my body,” Linda Giuliano explained. “It’s an honor to be part of the Sherman family in this way and support this special institution.” Giuliano has supported the college through multiple giving programs,

including the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund, the corporate matching gifts program, and through the sponsorship of the “Sherman Pride” wall display in Scallon Hall, the college’s main academic facility. “Providing a top-quality education is a given, but what makes Sherman special is the dedication, compassion and supportive environment for students, faculty and the administration to reach their potential,” she said of her appreciation for the college. Aimed at supporting students facing financial difficulties during this time, Sherman College has launched the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund. “We have no instructions for how to maneuver as a society, community and Sherman family right now,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Dr. Ohmar Land. “However, we do have the

ability to take care of one another. We do have guidance, fortitude and inspiration to encourage and propel our students to success.
