part 01 master plan site study diagramatic explorations plan Our original focus during the master plan stage planning for Flinders Street Station gave a lot of consideration in terms of thinking about how the urban plan we devise can create smaller desired spaces simply with its geometry that emerge as in-between spaces from designing from a micro scale, focusing more on the experiential. Essentially, what we wanted to create were “roomsâ€? that allowed for constant circulation no matter the circumstances of the day or how the user decides to transition through the space. These constant circulation paths would follow a process from the categories which we had initially decide to split Melbourne into, whether it be retail, cafĂŠ, green, civic or water.

part 02 project development initial plans, sections & elevations diagramatic explorations axonometric Focusing on the idea of processes flowing along the paths, I reversed the original idea of where the main flow was along the buildings into one where the paths dictate the programs of the buildings. These paths would be enclosed so that the form of the landscape becomes marked as an exerpeice relying on the senses as whole entirety of the site cannot be grasped in just one look. The twists and turns of the paths will challenge the human observer. This curiosity would be what entices one to enter the experience in the first place, where the walk through the space will focus on attempting to organise and see the spatial whole from an individual’s perspective. The user’s journey will be determined by their own choice, where they can choose to spend their time however they please throughout their journey and each individual’s experience and perception of time will differ depending on their own interests.

part 03 revising & progression plans, sections & elevations diagramatic explorations concept models Not entirely satisfied with the direction my project was taking, I decided to revisit and replan how the pathways and buildings could be planned so that the building functions create a smoother flow and connect better to circulation. This was where I started to fiddle around with how circulation would work and also replan the fragmented buildings on my site so the two are linked in a more defined manner.

BLURRING & WEBBING

PERMEATING & INTERCONNECTING

Interconnections between paths were explored to try link different process along each different path. However, that undermines the purpose of creating paths in the first place.

Instead, a possible way of connecting the “rooms and paths were to intermingle them so that the paths force you through the room spaces. The issue with this was the disruption of the functions within the individual rooms as a result of circulation passing through them.

SPLITTING & GRIDDING

LINKING & ARRANGING

To solve this issue, paths were placed on a separate plane from the buildings so that they exist in isolation from the actual circulation and people would either move up or down in order to access them. But again, there was a lack of connection between the rooms and paths, seeming more like two separate entities.

Instead, a possible way of connecting the “rooms and paths were to intermingle them so that the paths force you through the room spaces. The issue with this was the disruption of the functions within the individual rooms as a result of circulation passing through them.

HOW DO WE PERCEIVE MATERIALITY AND SEE WHAT’S BEYOND? Experimentation exploring how we read what’s directly in front of us and what is further away. How do we process what we are about to see with what we can see right now and what we’ve already seen? Balsa frame + string + perspex + trace

part 04 totalisation plans, sections & elevations diagramatic explorations model photographs renders The theme of the new plan for Flinders Street Station is a simulated landscape that unites diverse geographical conditions into a single place. Retail, cafes, civic spaces and areas of green nature and water are suddenly and improbably brought together into small, man-made cityscape, built wholly on top of the currently existing Flinders Street Station. It holds the promise of an almost absurd comprehensiveness and density: all of nature in one spot, opposing activities that are normally thought of as separate entities can be done simultaneously in the same line of process, the entire spectrum of leisure activity in the area above a train station. A new kind of nature is created—congested, compressed, contradictory—that seems to suit the pace of the city it serves. Whereas the original master plan had process flowing across and through the buildings, the new circulation is outside of the buildings and therefore becomes a new existence by itself.

Focusing on the architecture that frames Flinders Street Station, I noted the natural curves that were formed against the skyline. This geometry was where I derived my basic topography for the height differences of the buildings that are situated across the site. But of course, then the path within these buildings located on a grid will naturally have to follow the immediate surrounding context. The station will be accessible directly from the new site to the platform. The gridded layout also allows for easier crossing from South Bank to the north side of the city, therefore creating a smoother transition between the two halves of Melbourne.

HEIGHT OF SURROUNDING CITYSCAPE FOR BUILDING TOPOGRAPHY

This landscape placed on top of Flinders Street Station could be interpreted as a spatial network of elements, where the organisational type reflects elements in relation to one another. Through seeing all these buildings that are of the same size, one becomes more focuses on rearranging the space to combine them as a spatial whole. And in these terms, it becomes a process of recognition, awareness and connection. HEIGHT OF IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS FOR PATHS
