Getting a cover letter and resume done is not easy, but thanks to the interior design program making us take a pre-internship class, it gives you a good opportunity to help be prepared. Start your cover letter and resume early, speaking me experience it took me so many changes and rewrites to get to this final step, after changing the design, and rewriting paragraphs. Having different students look over your work is the most important part, take it to the career center and have them look over it to catch any mistakes
TIPS • Take resume and cover letter to career center • Keep portfolio simple
you may have missed. When making your Portfolio after finishing the cover letter and resume, try to make it as simple as possible but still have some work in the portfolio, including floor plans, space plan, construction documents, and rendering to show your skills. Make sure you choose work that highlights your talents, the goal is to make yourself desirable to an employer.

Looking for an internship is not easy, first I was planning on staying in Logan, just to save some money, but after seeing the video made by my classmate, I decided that I really wanted to intern at Vicente Wolf Associates, so I got my cover letter, resume and portfolio ready and sent them out before Spring Break, at the same time I also applied to Drake Design Associates and Amy Lau Design just in case I didn’t get an offer from Vicente Wolf. It is important to keep your options open and apply to more than one firm. March 11, 2015 I received an email from Vicente Wolf Associates, telling me that they would like to schedule an interview with Vicente, that same day I also received another email from Drake Design scheduling an interview as well. After both interviews, I couldn’t decide which firm I wanted to go, so I talked to a few family members, friends and professor Brooks, and then I began to have a discussion about taking both internships. Eight weeks at Vicente Wolf Associates and four weeks at Drake Design Associates. After I took both offers, I started looking for housing.

Finding a place in New York City is a challenge, trying to find a place near the office is almost impossible and expensive, and since I will be in New York for three months, I am trying to find a place that is close to a grocery store and subway, so I decided to stay with a friend to save some money, the apartment is located on upper east side and its a few blocks away from the subway. It’s a little far from the office but it was a good deal for the rent.

The second place I stayed is on the Upper West Side, the name of the apartment is Greystone Hotel, it is a studio type apartment, the rent includes a Rooftop Deck, club room, fitness center and laundry room, its two blocks away from the subway, and the apartment is also close to restaurants and bars, central park, charming shops and Riverside Park. It was about 15 minutes to Vicente Wolf Associates and 35 minutes to Drake Design Associates.

Once I knew that I was going to New York I started to look for apartments, it look me almost two months to find one that has all my needs. After searching for months, I found out Airbnb is a great source for finding apartments, it’s not only for finding an entire place but it can also find private rooms and shared rooms. TIPS • Plan ahead and start searching for apartments once you send out internship applications • Airbnb is a great source to find apartments

What to wear for the first day of the internship was a challenge, because you don’t know the office environment, and you are not sure if you are wearing the right clothes. So the night before I pulled out all my clothes and had a fashion show with my roommate, Jae, we helped each other pick out our first day business casual. After the first day of seeing what clothes everyone in the firm was wearing, that give me ideas of what to wear for the next two months. What to wear at Drake Design is another challenge, because the office environment is different than Vicente Wolf, so dressing is a little different, even though they are both business casual, at Drake Design most days you are not in the office, you are running
errands, so wearing something comfortable is the way to go, so I wore shoes that I would be comfortable running around a lot in. TIPS • Dress Professional • Wear comfortable shoes • DO NOT wear heels • DO NOT wear Flip Flops or Graphic Tees

When I was there each designer was assigned 2-3 projects from all over the world. The first few weeks I was helping several designers and getting familiar with the firm and some projects. The designers work close with him and make his vision become reality, each design needed to be approved by Vicente before they get sent out to the clients. After a few weeks, I got to partner up with a designer, Kerry, she was working on four different projects, I helped her prepare the presentation book, order samples, get presentations ready, include floor plan, and the price and images of accessories. Vicente was always making sure everyone was on top of everything, when he is not in the office, he would call twice or more to see if anyone has questions for him. He usually attended every client meeting and presented by himself. Vicente likes to be organized, so before his presentation he would go over the stuff and ordered the way he wants to show the clients.

As an intern, working at Drake Design I needed to run lots of errands, going to the D & D building to pick up and get fabrics, drop of checks, going to the New York Design Center to measure furniture size, get details and more. One thing I learned at Drake Design is how to use Studio Designer, it’s a piece of software that has all the current and past projects every designer is working on, include the current status of the furniture, fabric, tiles, wallcovering, carpets and more, it also includes all the vendors contact information who had been working with Drake Design. I got to work with different designers on several projects for the first week, including drawing on AutoCAD, order samples, run errands, made calls, and I spent most of my second week at D & D building and organize fabric samples. The last two weeks I got to work with the designer, Paris, I helped her order samples, get the presentation ready, did some AutoCAD, print out the list of accessories price and images, and space plan.
