ELLE DECOR GOES TO...
PUERTO RICO
Puerto Rico is a United States territory located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic, and west of both the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
Puerto Rico is an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. The main island of Puerto Rico is, by land area, the smallest of the Greater Antilles. With around 3.5 million people, it ranks third in population among that group of four islands, which include Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica. The capital and largest city is San Juan. Due to its location, Puerto Rico has a tropical climate with warm weather yearround and does not observe daylight saving time. Its official languages are Spanish, which is prevalent, and English. Originally populated for centuries by aboriginal people known as Taíno, the island was claimed by Christopher Columbus for Spain during his second voyage to the Americas
on November 19, 1493. Like Cuba, Puerto Rico remained a Spanish colony until 1898. Despite the Laws of Burgos of 1512 and other decrees for the protection of Indians, some Taíno people were forced into slavery in the early years of colonization. During the four centuries of Spanish rule, the island’s culture and physical landscape were transformed. European knowledge, customs and traditions were introduced, namely Christianity, the Spanish language, and advances such as agriculture, construction in stone, and the printing press. Numerous public buildings, forts, churches and public infrastructure built during Spanish rule are still standing to this day, forming an indelible part of the island’s cultural heritage.

what’s hot! news PROJECT ARA STYLE
At its second Project Ara Developer Conference on Google’s campus in Mountain View today, Project Ara director Paul Eremenko discussed Google’s go-to-market plans. Instead of putting it out there for everybody, Google is more comfortable doing a pilot. “We have a variety of unanswered questions, and the only way to get answers is to get actual data,” said Eremenko at the event. According to Google, it chose Puerto Rico for its strong mobile penetration–75 percent of the population’s initial access to the Internet comes through phones. Puerto Rico has designated free trade zones where Google can import modules from around the world. The marketplace for mobile carriers is also diverse with competitors ranging from local, US-based and Latin America carriers. Google is working with two carriers: local carrier Open Mobile and Claro, a subsidiary of América Móvil, the largest mobile services provider in Latin America. Eremenko talked about the need to get information around how to sell the unusual idea of a modular phone to the public. “Consumers actually crave choice, but when presented with choice, they seize up–and when they make a choice, they frequently have remorse about making the wrong one,” said Eremenko. “Ara is full of choices. We have to carefully curate and manage the experience. We have a variety of hypothesis, but we need to test them in the field.”

STEP LIVELY
Take your style quotient to new hights with a striking staircase, whether a dramatic floating wonder or a sweeping steel-and-glass spiral 1. The design team of Gwathmey-Seigal and das concepts, inc. The new Setai Hotel, Fifth Avenue! The ground-up building is quite stunning, with gently rounded corners, the angled windows and a sexy streamlined porte-cochere that extends to the curb. inside the main lobby of the hotel, they’ve created a stunning spiral staircase up to the second floor, which houses Ai Fiori, their fine-dining restaurant. The art program is exceptional as well. Note the gorgeous piece behind the reception desk, and their “homage” to the garment district, the two mannequins at the far end of the lobby. 2. Paint a bold color and construct a gallery of knick-knacks and photos on the wall behind the stairs, like HGTV’s John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino did to these stairs on Cousins Undercover. Apply a fun wallpaper to the risers to add visual interest to otherwise boring stairs. Go for paper with an interesting pattern in a neutral color palette to avoid going overboard. 12 ELLE DECOR

Mark English Architects designed a Sausalito Residence, Sausalito, California, the existing three-story home was in a state of disrepair, Our solution was to remove most of the interior walls through the use of structural steel, create a dramatic stair event, and open the exterior walls to the views. 7. The parallel to Carey’s Polaroid work is another category - photograms. These artworks are made in a darkroom: they are not studio-based and are camera-less. Making photograms employs a 19th-century technique, which is also a process/print and discovery/invention, like the 20th- century Polaroid. Monumental color photograms, Dings & Shadows, “blow up” form, color, and compositions as they relate to R/G/B/Y/M/C color theory. Jim Waid creates abstract worlds saturated with color, layered with mark, filled with rhythm and movement, and intricately textured. His canvases barely contain the landscape painted upon them; lush with growth they invite the viewer to explore the space. The artist said of his work, “I don’t want the paintings to be like you’re looking at a landscape. I want them to feel like you’re in it.” Initially the paintings seem nonrepresentational, however, they slowly reveal themselves to be made up of organic textures, abstracted natural forms, and the desert landscape. They convey a sense of nature, without the specificity of traditional landscape painting.
