Landscapes, Figures, Flowers Jeff Aeling, well known for his paintings of the American landscape, has always painted figures, but has rarely shown them. In his current exhibition, Landscapes, Figures, Flowers, Aeling, for the first time, combines his landscapes with paintings of the figure and still life. Low and wide, Aeling’s landscapes capture the power of nature, the beauty of light, and the vastness of our country. Informed by observation and influenced by photography, Aeling’s landscapes show us the wide open spaces that mirror our national identity. His landscapes capture the essence of place and hold onto a specific moment in time. This masterful and sensitive attention to observation extends to each of Aeling’s subjects. Historically, the female figure and flowers have been viewed as symbolic of female sexuality and this remains true of Aeling’s paintings. Yet, his portrayal of the nude feels of-our-time, with each figure confidently meeting the viewer’s gaze. With self-assured, often awkward, body language each figure’s pose, evokes contemporary angst and confronts the double standard female sexuality continues to incite within our society today. Aeling’s paintings are held in numerous museum and corporate collections including The Beach Museum, Manhattan, Kansas; The Denver Art Museum, Colorado; The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, Missouri; The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and Sprint World Headquarters, Overland Park, Kansas; Exeter Oil Corporation, Denver, Colorado; and DST Systems, Kansas City.
