Exhibition Statement

ThiscurrentseriesofportraitsarerootedinHo-Chunkidentity.Iamextending theboundariesofphotographybyincorporatingbeadworkdirectlyonto the photograph.The use ofHo-Chunkfloralandgeometricdesignsisametaphor forthespiritsofourancestorswhoareconstantlylookingoverus.

Asachild,IwentwithmymothertoseeaSiouxmedicinemanontheRosebudreservation. Wesatontheflooralongthewallswithmanyotherpeople, whenthelightswereturnedoffthewomenstartedtosing. Theywereasking forthespiritstocomein,itwasatthistimethatsmallorbsof lightbeganto float around the room. I have visually incorporated this experience through beadwork,inordertogiveasymbolicrepresentationofourancestorsandto presentthepride,strengthandbeautyofmypeople.

Biography

Tom Jones has a MFA, Photography and a MA, Museum Studies from Columbia College, Chicago, IL and BFA, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is currently a Professor, Art Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught since 2005.

Tom Jones has had over forty solo or two person exhibitions in the past 24 years including Here We Stand shown recently at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, Great Bend (with catalog) and the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, FL and Strong Unrelenting Spirits, Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, NM.

In addition, Jones has participated in over 200 group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. Most recently, he has shown at the The Outwin, 2022: American Portraiture Today (he won 2nd prize in this prestigious competitive exhibition). This exhibition has traveled from the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery,Washington, D.C. to the Orlando Art Museum, FL, the Aukland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, NC and the Grand Rapids Art Museum, MI.

Tom Jones has written numerous essays including for People of the Big Voice Photographs of Ho-Chunk Families by Charles Van Schaick, 1879-1942, Wisconsin Historical Society Press. As a curator of exhibitions, Jones has worked on projects with the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Mn (in collaboration with a council of invited curators), curated The Art of Ho-Chunk Basket Making, Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend and For a Love of His People: The Photography of Horace Poolaw, Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN among numerous others.
