GOOD DIGESTION

FEATURED ARTICLE

FEATURED ARTICLE •

By Deb Soule, Avena Botanicals (Owner and accomplished author)

T

raditional peoples worldwide have long understood that food is our medicine, that health begins with good digestion and that good digestion is the result of a variety of factors. One particular ancient healing system, Ayurveda, has carefully outlined basic principles for improving digestion that are easily applicable to those of us living in the West. The term Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which means “the science of life and longevity.” Herbalist Candis Hope Cantin writes in her book, Pocket Guide to Ayurvedic Healing, “Ayurveda combines physical, psychological, and spiritual therapies in an approach to health that is as relevant to our modern society as it was to the ancient world. Utilizing herbs, proper nutrition, purification and, above all, an affirmative way of living, Ayurveda treats not just the ailment but the whole person, with emphasis on disease prevention rather than the cure of specific symptoms.” As a western-trained herbalist, I have found the Ayurvedic concept of agni extremely valuable. There are 13 types of agni. Simply put, agni is one’s digestive fire or the “biological fire” that rules digestion. Dr. Vasant Ladd, a highly respected Ayurvedic doctor, writes,“The span of life, health, immunity, energy, metabolism, complexion, strength, enthusiasm, luster, and the vital breath are all dependent on agni (bodily fire). Proper nourishment of the body depends upon the proper functioning of agni in digestion.” When a person’s digestive fire is functioning well, one’s mind and senses feel clear, steady and awake. One’s physical body feels strong, stable and alive, and one will have the energy she or he needs to change their life and to act in the world in positive ways. The body is able to digest and assimilate food fully and eliminate waste products effectively when agni is strong. When one’s agni is weak or deficient, feelings of physical and emotional dullness, hopelessness, heaviness, fuzziness and stagnation may be present at vary-

ing degrees. Food is not properly digested when agni is weak. Undigested food particles accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract and turn into a sticky substance called ama. (Ama is also formed by bacteria and cellular metabolic waste). Ayurveda considers the accumulation of ama to be the beginning of the disease process for all diseases. Thus, improving one’s agni is essential for health. In the West one of the most common ways we dampen our digestive fire is through the stress and fast-paced lives we live.We can eat the cleanest, more organic diet and still suffer from low digestive fire. I often joke with clients that running out the door with nettle tea instead of coffee in their travel mug has not really changed anything—eating and drinking on the run dampens one’s digestive fire and feeds the stresses that as we age will compromise our vitality. Many of the Ayurvedic concepts about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles are not uncommon to people who have been eating organic and whole foods and including regular relaxing practices such as yoga and meditation into their lives. Lots of information about food combining and healing diets has been available in the West for several years. Each person is unique in their constitutional make-up and benefits from close observation of what foods and food combinations support good digestion and daily healthy bowel movements. A few reminders of ways to improve agni: • Choose foods and combinations of foods that suit your constitution. If you have an acute illness, choose foods that support, not stress, the condition. Candis Hope Cantin suggests that the food on our plates should combine well into a soup—if you look at your plate or bowl of food and find disharmony then reconsider what you are eating. • Give an hour or two between a main meal and desert. Eating sweets with a main meal causes fermentation and stagnation of food (Ama).

Success is a journey not a destination half the fun is getting there. —Gita Bellin

Agni is reduced and impaired by: • Eating or drinking cold foods or iced drinks between or with meals. • Drinking coffee with or after meals. • Drinking alcohol with meals. • A diet too high in grains, even whole grains,

dampens digestive fire. • Eating when stressed and upset. • Eating too quickly, eating on the run, eating when driving or in front of a television. • Microwaved foods contain no life force. Nor do highly processed foods with additives, preservatives, and sugar.

Upon rising in the morning, the first thing we drink will either dampen or wake up our digestive fire. Warm water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime is valuable to do every morning. Drinking a warm cup of fresh ginger root tea (12 tsp. of fresh chopped ginger root simmered for 5 minutes in a cup of water) with lemon juice before breakfast and before any meal improves digestion and helps eliminate ama. Slowly sipping on a half cup of warm water with lemon throughout the meal can improve digestion.

• Eat fruit at separate times from other foods and eat melons alone. Melons cause gas for lots of people. • Eat vegetables and fruits in season and local and organic whenever possible. • Chew food well—most of us don’t. Sitting down and eating in a relaxed setting supports good digestion and for many people may be the most valuable (and free) “remedy” for improving digestion. • Eat at regular times. • Eat smaller portions. • A small amount of bitter herbs (tincture, glycerite or tea) taken 5-15 minutes before each meal wakes up the digestive fire. Herbs such as dandelion root, yellow dock root, burdock root, artichoke leaf or a bitters tonic combination can be very helpful. • Chewing on fennel seeds after eating or using a fennel seed glycerite or tea can ease and eliminate gas and improve digestion. • Cook with pungent culinary herbs such as rosemary, thyme, basil, marjoram, dill, and fennel and spices such as mustard seed, cumin, turmeric, and caraway seed. • Using ghee (clarified butter—easy to make) is warming, nourishing and rebuilding to the body and regulates digestive fire. • Olive oil contains enzymes which aid digestion.

HYPNOSIS FOR HEALTH

childhood disappeared. This unlooked-for connection between “use” and function was to prove itself out over the 60 years teaching people with every conceivable ill. Alexander’s odyssey, widely acclaimed in mid-century scientific circles, was referred to by one of Alexander’s (many) medical students, Nobel-prize neurophysicist Nicolas Tinbergan, as “one of the true epics of scientific research of our age.” For indeed, what Alexander discovered embodied “with complete precision the pyschobiological research” which was to emerge during continued on page 18

ver 100 years ago in Australia, F.M. Alexander, confronted with having to give up his acting career, set out to discover what he did on stage which resulted in loss of voice and interference with his breath. With the help of mirrors he quite quickly identifed a stiffening of his neck and a pulling of his head back and down into his shoulders. A “misuse” which set off tension from head to toe. Even the THOUGHT of speaking set off this pattern! During the nine years it took to develop a method of gaining “control” of unconscious habit, the lung problems which had plagued him from

changes you don’t want to make. Drawing from a multitude of hypnotic tools and techniques hypnotherapists are able to assist many people in letting go of unhealthy habits; like smoking and overeating. At the close of the hypnotherapy session (it lasts about a half hour) almost every person says; “That was so wonderful! I could stay feeling like that forever.” And the best thing about it is that it is a normal, natural, healthy state to be in.You actually go in and out of “trances” a number of times each day. Do any of these behaviors sound familiar: daydreaming, watching a movie or reading a book so intently you lose track of time and what is going on around you, driving somewhere and forgetting how you got there and what you passed along the way? I’ll bet they do! Those are times you are spontaneously slipping into a light trance-like state. Next time this happens, notice how good you feel physically when you “come back down to earth.” So, are you tired of weighing too much? Smoking? Feelng stressed? Biting your nails? Maybe it’s time to let the healthy side of hypnosis give you some help. It’s a safe, natural and enjoyable way to get rid of those unhealthy habits and feel marvelous at the same time. ou probably know how entertaining Stage Hypnosis Shows can be, but do you also know how wonderful Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are for making almost any life change? That’s right! Hypnosis, in the hands of a skilled hypnotherapist, can reduce stress, help a person get rid of almost every bad habit there is, improve sleep quality, and provide a general feeling of overall well-being. The list of healthy benefits available to you from hypnosis, is endless. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to do something that feels good and to know that it is actually healthy too? There aren’t too many activities that can make THAT claim. Many people think that hypnosis might cause them to do things they wouldn’t do ordinarily, or perhaps feel “out of control.” Well, that simply ISN’T true. You are in full control when you are hypnotized; in fact, you hear all that is going on around you. During a professional hypnotherapy session you are guided into a very relaxed state where you feel better than you could ever imagine. While you are relaxed, the hypnotherapist gives suggestions for the changes YOU want to make. The truth is, you have to want those changes. No one can force you to become hypnotized, just as they can not force you to make

Alexander recognized it in aboriginal people. SIGNS OF MISUSE? Poor posture, problems of back (including disc herniation), joints, arthritis, TMJ, osteoporosis, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, stress, migraines, fatigue, respiratory ills, effortful movement, balance and neurological problems (MS, Parkinson’s, stroke). WHO NEEDS THE TECHNIQUE? People suffering from all the above conditions, as well as people whose occupations tend to exacerbate poor habits: dentists, computer operators, manual laborers, performers (actors, dancers, musicians, singers), people who rely on maximum efficiency/fluidity/control, equestrians, martial artists, athletes, those suffering from depression or poor self-image. tion, increased metabolic activity and energy production, improved heart and organ functioning, better lymphatic drainage, improved cellular efficiency and better brain performance. By breathing more fully, we notice an improvement in our immune response and a dramatic increase in our ability to handle stress. On the mental and emotional level, the positive effects of this type of breathing can best be seen in the clearing of old patterns of belief that often result in “dis-eases” in the body. These diseases or imbalances are usually the result of chronic tensions stemming from unprocessed memories that have been stored (suppressed) in the subconscious. By opening up and connecting the breath, the body is “activated” into a kind of state wherein these old suppressions are encouraged to come to the surface. Then, during the session, by continuing to breathe with and through these thoughts, sensations or feelings, the experiences can be accepted and allowed to integrate in a more beneficial way. On the spiritual level and with less blocks in the way, the individual is able to live more fully in the present and feel a deeper connection to themselves, their inner Spirit and the universe around them. Thus, the primary focus of the Power of Breath process is to reawaken the individual to his or her inner spirit, to reconnect them with their sense of inner knowing and to help them find the path toward a joy-filled and purposeful life. The Power of Breath is a unique modality that is ever evolving. We seek to recognize that it is never too late to find the beauty and power of our lives. Through the use of conscious connected breathing and awareness practices, we choose to reclaim the gift of our own, unique life energy and move in a direction of creating a passionate life guided by realistic goals and uplifting experience. We wholeheartedly embrace this process as a way to create more peace, acceptance, and

RIGHT NOW, TAKE A DEEP FULL BREATH, AND LET THE EXHALE GO!!… On the physical level, breath is life. Although we can go for many days without food or water, after only a few precious minutes, we must breathe in order to live. For thousands of years, humans have studied the art and science of breathing. It has been shown, in fact, that the more we breathe, the better we feel, and the better the body functions in virtually every major system. Why, then, do the vast majority of us exhibit shallow breathing patterns as we grow older? What has happened to that free, healthy, open breath that most of us began with as babies? As it turns out, as we grow and develop we learn very quickly that one of the best ways to deal with life’s difficulties is to shut down our breath. Whether it’s as a response to a painful event, a family trauma, to stress or a cultural or fashion expectation, the shutting down of our breath tends to deaden or postpone the processing of our experience. Ideally, if we were able to fully breathe while experiencing the event, or later when the mind was reviewing the event, we would be able to fully process and integrate it. However, this is rarely the case. More often, we continue on with our lives unable to fully understand the experience until, eventually, the associated pain is suppressed and a restricted breathing pattern develops. This restricted breathing pattern further inhibits our ability to deal with similar events and over time dramatically reduces the quality and vitality of our lives. The Power of Breath is a self-empowering healing method that encourages deep selfgrowth and profound change on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Through full, diaphragmatic, open-mouthed breathing (often called circular breathing) we are able to literally transform the painful memories from our past that have been stored within the body. On the physical level, by opening up the breath we can achieve better oxygenation and oxida-

CHINESE & ASIAN MEDICINE

FEATURED ARTICLE

FEATURED ARTICLE •

By Rhonda Feiman, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, L.Ac.

T

raditional Asian medicine is a subtle and comprehensive system for healing and maintaining wellness which continues to show that it can successfully treat modern medically defined pathology. I am thrilled when the techniques of acupuncture and Asian herbology clearly treat diabetes, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, infertility and headaches, and when muscular skeletal problems are alleviated. I am delighted when the application of the herb Artemisia (mugwort) to a specific point on the little toe successfully helps turn a breech baby. What we see from these documented accomplishments is that the sophisticated and intricate diagnostic methods of this medicine can and do treat internal medical situations. The classic medical texts, written so long ago, treated many of the same imbalances and disharmony we see today without our modern interpretation of disease. For example, there was no term for diabetes but they knew that some people had extreme yin deficiency that led to an imbalance of fluids and the heating of the body in a way that affected thirst and circulation. They did not know of AIDS or hepatitis but they did know about external pernicious influences and the concepts of toxic heat and internal heat worsening pathology. The treatment principle of clearing heat or venting heat from the inside out was established to treat this imbalance. The sophistication of these methods means that this ancient medicine gives us ways to treat difficult illness that we see today in the 21st century. For instance, an aspect of one type of bronchial asthma is the difficulty of catching one’s breath. In traditional Chinese medicine we can say that the Kidney meridian energy is not grasping the Lung qi. If the symptoms are worse at night and include a gurgling sensation, profuse sweating,a pale tongue with a thin white coat and a pulse that feels like it is floating under the fingers, we would say that in addition to the Kidney qi not grasping the Lung qi, the diagnosis is a wind cold invasion with the retention of phlegm

fluid in the lungs. This is treated with acupuncture and specific herbs to warm the lungs, clear phlegm and soothe the wheezing and to assist the Kidney energy in grasping the qi. Another scenario shows the asthma coming from a wind heat invasion, the manifestation including shortness of breath, gurgling in the throat, a choking cough with a stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm, a red tongue with a sticky yellow coating, a rapid pulse, and perhaps fever and irritability. The herbs and acupuncture used would be different than in our first scenario. The ancient system of diagnosis and treatment allows us to clearly differentiate patterns and treat a common illness, in this case, bronchial ashma, effectively. With this time-tested method of differential diagnosis, we have the framework in which to interpret and treat the emerging diseases of today. We are also able to see subtle changes in individuals and apply appropriate techniques to maintain health before serious illness develops. Traditional ancient texts present different approaches to healing and also speak about the sequence of healing. It is said that food therapy should be tried before herb medicine. The power of food was recognized and utilized as medicine for centuries. The flavors, which correlate to the internal organ system, were considered essential in healing. If you’re irritable and show signs of Liver qi stagnation, eat a sour food, such as lemons, to help invigorate the qi stagnation. For depression and melancholy, invigorate and nourish the Heart qi by ingesting a bitter flavor food. If you’re very weak and cold and prone to illness and stomachaches from deficiency, eat a full sweet, such as a winter squash, to help nourish the Spleen and Stomach earth energy. If you are very hot and irritable, cool off with watermelon or mung beans to clear excess heat. These simple food ideas can help restore balance. If this is not strong enough, then an herbal formula that treats the disharmony is appropriate. Acupuncture is then also used to help the body naturally self regulate to restore balance.

en the qi. Therefore, the entire person is treated and the root of the illness is addressed. The air we breathe, the food we eat, how we move and use our bodies all contribute to our overall health and well being. Our emotional health depends upon our ability to see and feel and experience our connection to all beings. When we practice techniques that ground us and we reestablish our link with universal energy, then we are firmly in touch with a larger view of our place in the world. This frees us to heal our own unique specific physical and emotional problems while being cognizant of our connection to all beings in the world. This helps us to be part of the natural flow that is all around us, and this connection is an essential aspect of the classical tradition of Chinese Medicine. See Rhonda’s Ads on pages 12 and 26

We also see discussions of the use of movement. Qi-gong or Tai Chi help massage and stimulate the meridians and thereby maintain health. Considering the toxic chemicals and pollution in our environment, it is essential that we take advantage of these extremely important diagnostic and therapeutic tools. So, for the above cases of bronchial asthma, along with acupuncture and Chinese herbology and the aforementioned sequence of treatment, I would suggest methods to strengthen the root of the Kidney qi and the Lung qi. I would recommend dietary modifications to reduce the production of phlegm and strengthen the digestion. I would recommend meditation and other ways in which the individual could build Kidney and Lung qi. I would teach specific exercises in the Qi–gong or Tai Chi tradition that help strength-

Ayurveda treats each individual, considering their own unique psychological, emotional and physical constitution. We evaluate the imbalances in the body through this system of the elements as well. Our world and bodies are constantly adjusting to new environments and when these environments become imbalanced we will feel it in some way. yurveda is the oldest continuously practiced healthcare system in the world. It originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda is a system of medicine based on the Five Great Elements of nature and on the understandings of nature’s rhythms, balances and laws. It is understood in Ayurveda that man, as a natural being, is governed by all the rules and laws that other natural beings are governed by, and if we choose to ignore these laws then imbalances will begin to appear. These imbalances are the precursor to disharmony and disease in the mind and body. This system of medicine understands our deepest connections with the whole universe and the influences of the energies that make up this universe. We are considered a “microcosm” of the “macrocosm”. We view the world through the archetypical elements of ether (space), air, fire, water and earth. Ether and earth are static in nature while air, fire and water are dynamic and ever changing. These elements have inherent energies that govern their functions. We are all made up of all

RECOMMENDED READING Peace Is the Way: Bringing War and Violence to an End by Deepak Chopra Harmony Books, NY, USA www.crownpublishing.com $23.00 Deepak Chopra’s Peace is the Way was inspired by a saying from Mahatma Gandhi: “There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.” Deepak Chopra quotes: “In a world where every path to peace has proved futile, the one strategy that has not been tried is the way of peace itself. We must not bring one war to an end, or thirty, but the idea of war itself.” This book challenges each of us to take the next leap in personal evolution. You are not asked to be a saint or to give up any belief. You are only asked to stop reacting out of fear. He brings the idea of peace and the power it has over conflict, hatred and despair into focus, and he offers a clear pathway to make this world a better place for us all, by bringing the vision of peace to the forefront of each individual. This book shows every individual how to become a peacemaker. THE PEACE BOOK 108 simple ways to create a more peaceful world by Louise Diamond Conari Press, Berkeley, CA, USA The Peace Book provides simple, everyday tools that enable us to have more peace in our lives and in the world. The Peace Book was first published in June 2001 and is now in its Third edition. It is being used in classrooms, study groups, nursing homes and many other facilities, where it focuses on personal responsibility for building peace. The success of the book is in its “gift” element.

The act of giving the book as a gift of peace, and the act of receiving that gift. The author comments: “I encourage you to use this book to cultivate peace in your own life and in the world around you, enjoy it and pass it on.” Changing the world , One “Peace” at a time… The Peace Book is not available in bookstores and is only available from The Peace Company, Vermont, tel: 1-888-455-5355 bliss: Living in Silent Awareness by Catherine Schultz, Ph.D. Xlibris Corporation, USA Dr. Catherine Schultz Reinman in this book outlines how we can create and live in “bliss” throughout our lives. Living in Ashville, North Carolina, she brings forward 20 years’ experience of how she supports individuals to find an Awareness of Oneness on a consistent basis. This book attempts to ground and bring to the reader the nature of bliss—What is bliss? What prevents bliss? How might one live in bliss? She says in her book,“Bliss. We hear it mentioned a lot; ignorance is bliss, wedded bliss, this is bliss, in reference to a moment in life that feels really good.As human beings, we continually live amidst a tension of opposites, that which we wish to avoid (fear) and that which we wish to gain (pleasure), and Bliss epitomizes that which we wish to gain. This book is an investigation of this promise”.

that peace is always possible.” The Peace Abbey, inspired by the students of the Life Experience School, proposed the development of The Peace Literature Project in Honor of Samantha Smith, to educate students about peace and promote peace literature for schoolage children in 50 selected pilot schools across the United States. It is the dream of the Peace Literature Project that someday every American school and town will have a section of its library devoted entirely to peace. The project honors Samantha Smith, a young American girl who asked a simple question and changed the attitudes of two great nations.

BOOK REVIEW

ourney to the Soviet Union is a heartwarming story of a young girl who helped bring peace between two great nations. In the 1980’s the United States and the Soviet Union were still in the grip of a cold War—a struggle between Western democracy and communism as systems of government. Each country threatened the other with destruction by nuclear weapons. The ensuing arms race resulted in widespread distrust and fear between both nations. Ten-year-old Samantha Smith worried about war and dreamed of peace. So she wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov, the new leader of the Soviet Union: “Dear Mr. Andropov,” she wrote,“I have been worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war.Are you going to have a war or not…?” He did not answer right away, but a few months later there was a phone call waiting for her at the principal’s office at her school in Manchester, Maine. And so began her amazing journey… Samantha’s journey to the Soviet Union came to symbolize peace between the two nations. She proved that one person can make a real difference. Her courage, faith and determination to make a positive change in the world make her a hero for all ages. Sadly, on August 25, 1985, Samantha and her father were killed in a plane crash. They were on their way home from London where she had finished filming a segment for a TV series. She was then 13 years old. Around the world, people remembered the inspiring girl and her famous trip to the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, while Samantha effectively illustrated the power each of us has to make a difference in our world, many people today are not familiar with her story. Journey to the Soviet Union is Samantha Smith’s powerful story in her own words. With the republication of her book, we believe that Samantha’s message and the courage with which she delivered it can continue to inspire and empower people of all ages. In Samantha’s words, “I dedicate this book to the children of the world. They know

RETREAT DESTINATIONS STATEWIDE AND WORLDWIDE

I

n this busy life of extreme stress and pressure, where do we find the time to be at peace within ourselves? No doubt we can create it within our own home, but are we able to “switchoff,” so to speak, from the everyday distractions that get in the way? Maybe packing the suitcase and getting away from the everyday surroundings, could be the ticket we have been waiting for! Here is a list of recommended retreat destinations for those seeking nourishment and renewal of the body—find which one best suits you. All of those listed offer their own uniqueness and one that will suit the individual seeking to get away for a short-time or longer. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Do I need to get away, do I feel overwhelmed? 2. Do I need time for my body and mind to unwind? 3. Do I need the rest and renewal to recharge so that I am more able to enjoy my everyday life? 4. Do I need time for “me”? And, don’t feel guilty about this one!
