About Me Hi, I am Zhao Xue from Beijing, China. After graduated with a bachelor degree in Industrial Design, I worked on visual and UX design for more than 2 years, in which I picked up much experience in design. I recognized that design is not simple accumulation of functions, instead, it integrates user behavior and psychology with user experience throughout the design process. I love to focus on user needs and behavior, pay attention to communicating with users and learn more about the related knowledge. The accumulation of projects gave me an in-depth understanding that interaction design is not a simple presentation of visual interface and actions - it solves the problems of communication between people and things, which makes the products effective, easy-to-use and pleasant.

CNAT Branding & Website Development China National Acrobatic Troupe (CNAT) was founded in 1950, and it was the first professional acrobatics group in China. With the team's strength, CNAT is known to the world. But the old website interface is out of touch with Chinese acrobatic style. Through investigation and interview in acrobatic circle, we decided to redefine brand culture of CNAT, integrate framework and establish new visual style fitting in with the brand culture.

Therefore, we rebuilt the brand for CNAT, subvert the traditional image of acrobatics in people's minds, and establish new look of Chinese acrobatics industry.
Emotional resonance
At the beginning of the project, CNAT's creative director Mr. Ho said: "Nowadays, acrobatics in many people's traditional concept still stay in the skill of juggling. The difficult skill is Chinese acrobat's advantage, and it also becomes stereotype about us. But in fact, many domestic groups have explored in choreography, costume, artistic expression, etc for many years, and have made considerable achievements."

We conducted analysis on potential user group through interviewing show promoters, foreign and domestic spectators, and expert judges in the industry, to make the website a platform for sharing information and resources of shows, as well as an effective bridge connecting show promoters, acrobatic talents, and the public.
Combining with the interview results, we analyzed and re-integrated the original framework and content of the website, in order to create an influential brand of circus arts. It is also intended to make an emotional connection with users, form user cognition of the brand through interacting influence, and cultivate user loyalty to the brand.

The creating progress of shows is shown in terms of art performances and creative ideology.
After the discussion and research with clients, we decided to change the traditional web framework. We show the brand from two aspects: Chinese acrobatics and CNAT. A systematic review of Chinese acrobatics and CNAT is made to enhance their sense of authority and tradition. Newly added “The Art” allows users not only to feel acrobatic art from the final results of shows, but also to profoundly understand acrobatic art from all aspects including its creative concept, creative process, and characters and stories behind.

Wireframe Through analysis, the scheme about the information level and large pictures tiling from the homepage to the inside pages was used. In order to create a light and convenient content presentation, and reduce users' expected burden. The significance of flat design is more than just removing the texture and pure color blocks visually, but means the complete flattening of information structure. The reduction of information level means high efficiency.

How to weaken diďŹƒcult skills and enhance artistic appeal of acrobatics becomes a problem to be solved in the design process. After rendering pictures of the show artistically, surrealism art atmosphere is created for classic shows, making them very stunning.
CIPG Fun With Chinese Characters for iPad In 2013, we designed and develop this app commissioned by the client China International Publishing Group (CIPG). I participated in the interaction design of app and partial game planning work in the project. A large number of interactive elements are integrated into the product, which strengthen the interaction between Chinese characters and people. The product was oďŹƒcially launched last year.
Project Introduction The Client CIPG hope to present the evolution process of Chinese characters in the book through the advantage of app multimedia touch platform, so as to attract foreigners’ interest in Chinese characters and Chinese culture. It is not a educational app for professionals to study Chinese character culture, because it focuses more on entertainment than education functionally. The target users are westerners, with an emphasis on North Americans. Because the market is huge as English is their native language.

Concept Description By interviewing experts and dozens of overseas students, we found that most foreigners like Chinese characters and traditional Chinese cultures, but they find it hard to learn and write Chinese characters, mainly because that there’s no clear link between its pronunciation and writing. Moreover, current Chinese characters cannot leave direct visual impressions. In order to help foreigners learn and understand Chinese characters, we should start with its evolution, thus helping them understand how it has evolved from hieroglyphics to current Chinese characters. We have found through observation and research that in the process of language learning, users’ using vision, hearing and body movements can enhance their ability of understanding and effect of memorization. We integrate more visual, auditory and dynamic elements into product in subsequent design, thus increasing interactive experience.

Interaction Mode Research By analyzing the scenario of iPad users, we got some conclusions: Learning-related apps are mostly used at home or other quiet, comfortable and relaxed places. So user often holds iPad by one hand or places upon other things. Their interaction areas are mostly at the center of the screen and area that can be touched by fingers of both hands for easy using and keeping balance. Considering this app is largely for entertainment rather than learning, many entertainment-preferred innovations are made on the page. we studied all common gestures and finally selected five interaction modes, including “Tap”, “Drag”, “Flick”, “Gravity sensor” and “Voice recognition”, integrated scene design and designed different interaction actions for 20 Chinese-character levels.

Character Description
We hope what this app focuses on is not just technology and the function that it provides, but also the emotion contained in itself. Every Chinese character has its own theme to convey. We do not need to build up a new emotion attached to it, but need just to let the users immerse in the emotion that each character projects into the mind of the users, in order to create an atmosphere absorbing to the users. This objective also follows one of the design criteria: make it interesting.
Main Pages Visual Design Considering the app is a Chinese-character game, a concise visual style of traditional Chinese ink is used, offering a user experience like writing Chinese characters with brush pen on Xuan paper. The Chinese element of the app is highlighted to weaken the relatively tedious evolution process of Chinese characters. The icon is flat and pure-color, without shadow and texture.
The unlocked numbers in Chinese characters are displayed in the top right corner, and the unlocked one will change into red.

There are four scenes in the game for users to choose, including “Moonlight River”, “Farming Time”, “Autumn Daybreak”and“Country Cottage”. Each scene contains five characters associated with the theme.

Game-Scene Selection It can demonstrate the word evolution process through interactive game model. The game is designed to maintain the balance of the “boat� on the water in a certain period of time by the gravitational sensor of iPad.

Awards The unlocked Chinese characters on this page are displayed in the form of list. Click any Chinese character to enter the page explaining the Chinese character.
Chinese characters can be zoomed, deleted, and selected repeatedly. It can also play the related sound to help memory.
In the conversion process of each interface, we add some animation elements, such as left-right switching and magnifying on clicking. It can achieve the following effect:

My WorkBackground Selection My Work Every time unlock a Chinese character, users can get the oracle of the word. Drag multiple characters into the painting area, and create freely.

Share After creation work, users can save it, and share with their friends by Facebook, Twitter or E-mail.
Testing
After finishing lo-fi prototype, we invited some potential users to try it. We imported it into the iPad prototyping software to test the size and position of controls, and the jump path among pages. Then when the game design was finished, we used Keynote to simulate animation to test the results, and discussed modifications with programmers and clients over and over to improve user experience.
CIPG Seal cutting art app for ipad platform In 2014, Seal cutting art app is another project of design service commissioned by CIPG. The seal cutting technique is actually simulated through different processes and operations, enabling users to spontaneously love traditional culture. And different modes are designed for different user groups, thus bringing better user experience. In this project, I am responsible for early investigation, user research, behavior analysis and partial visual design later.
Project Introduction Due to the arrival of informatization in the Internet era, the development of traditional crafts is impacted. Most young people do not understand seal cutting now. In order for people to have a better understanding of traditional crafts and knowledge on seal cutting, we design and develop this seal cutting app for CIPG, enabling people to learn knowledge on seal cutting while enjoying entertainment.

Problem Finding Through interview with users, we found that Chinese people are unfamiliar with seal cutting. There are some reasons: Its traditional culture and forms do not accord with modern aesthetics. Many people have heard of it, but have not seen it. So, they do not have such cultural experience. Knowing about and learning seal cutting is out of touch with the real life. Seal cutting is not applicable.

One day, Sara saw a new seal cutting art app, and she was interested in it. So she download it to have a try.
Then she entered the game page. There were several levels about seal cutting. She began to play.
After passed a few levels, some new pages were unlock. So she began to enjoy the seal cutting.

Mode Design After analysed the scenario, we began the ideation of the game. Because the game is designed for all ages, so we deďŹ ned it as a casual game. Casual games are easy-to-play and more interesting. By playing the game, users will learn more about seal cutting, and may be interested in the art of seal cutting. Design Criteria unfamiliar with seal cutting
With the deepening of the project, we have discovered that giving more interest to the product and making its content more specialized are two paradoxical directions. While interest denotes completing the seal cutting work with the assistance of the simple and light interfacial design and inducing instruction, specialty means more open settings that do not subject users to the restriction of auxiliary functions at the same time of seal cutting. In order to meet these two requirements, we tried to develop the product in two modes - task mode and free mode. Task mode is more for beginners, there are several levels game and allow users to learn the whole process of seal cutting and knowledge. Free mode is suit for professional users or users who have a certain understanding of seal cutting. They can experience, play and create their own work and quickly share with others.
An intuitive interface clearly conveys contents and information to users. Various interface levels have clear loops and navigations from which users can be clear about their locations and conveniently switch columns by navigations. Stable interface structure Clear menu buttons and button icons used can correctly show their meanings. Reasonable and rich user experience pays attention to details and appropriately adds animation eects. The operation of skeuomorphic accords with the habits of users in real life.

Through analysis and discussion, we have put forward the concept of new experience on recreational seal cutting on iPad, in hope that the product promotes user experience by giving more enjoyment and entertainment. After determining the positioning of this app, we place the key point of consideration on the issue of how to highlight the entertaining atmosphere of seal cutting via visual so as to instill more interest to it. After thinking over, we have determined two direction of design.

1 Cartoon Image Packaging Inclusion of cartoon figures can enrich the page structure and increase the visual liveness of page. We selected the images of old man and descendants. Old man is emblematic of erudition and wit, and even the allegory of imparting knowledge, which coincides with the features of the product. Subsequently, considering the issue of multi-scenario application of image, we have added expressions and actions such as delight, disappointment, thinking and more, which are used for the page of knowledge Q&A. And we plan to increase the number of figures at the later stage of design to satisfy different users’ predilections by shaping different characters and different styles of figures.
Parallax Scrolling In order to achieve a better displaying effect, we have tried out several methods. On the page of introduction to seal cutting, considering the abundance of pictures and texts, we have adopted parallax scrolling design by dividing the texts, pictures and background into three layers and bringing users with fresh visual experience at different scrolling speeds.
2 Rendering of Scenarized Design The interest-oriented product can well boost the entertainment and sense of engagement in use of page by appropriately including scenarized design, on the premise of function assurance. As a result, we attempt to apply the technique of scenarized design to the free schema page. The key elements in the scenario of seal cutting - the wooden table and sheet of paper - are extracted to make visual expression.

FAB 5C Intelligent Community Terminal In 2013, I was as the main designer and collaborated with team members to design the interactive interface of community intelligent terminals for FAB Enterprise Group. User Research Target users are from 18 to 35. Allowing for the sensitivity of teenagers for interactive products and those in forties who work in high-tech companies, target users will upsize in the scope of age. Based on serving the public in communities, this program focuses on the housing community and divides the user groups according to age and activity scope. Different users pay attentions to different products functions. Meanwhile, the products they are using are also of different functions. Therefore, the design should be follow the properties of different users and their needs, which will contribute to product’s usability. We get knowledge of users’ characters and needs by interviews and establish four personas.

Standby Page Through analysis, the major function of lock screen is summarized as attracting users and displaying functions. In the design procedure, dynamic effect is also considered. Meanwhile, some real time information such as time and weather information as well as modules for tips are added.

According to the brand features of Deer Jet, we researched and developed business handicraft for VIP clients. Finally the products satisfying three parties were made, which solved a series of problems for customers from the orientation to design and to production.
Deer Jet was ďŹ rst established in 1995 as one of the key subsidiaries of the Hainan Airlines Group, China’s fourth largest commercial airline. Deer Jet provide a variety of services, such as business charter, aircraft management, ground handling, aircraft sales and medical evacuation.

At the early stage of the project, the client needed to design a VIP card which could be used both for recording membership information for identity authentication, and for collection and giving as presents. The VIP card should manifest the distinguished identity of the members and at the same time inherit the image of the brand. After a series of research and digging deeper into the client's requirement, I have found that the essential requirement was to convey the connotation of the product, that is, the client wanted to emphasize on the product's being the symbol of identity and the brand, instead of the form of the product.

Branches stationery combination For people who pursue high quality of life, Wood Branches series is a quiet and romantic stationery design, with which one always feel the breath of natural.
Tape Holder The integral styling of Tape holder is inspired by branch form. And geometry simpliďŹ cation is carried out combining with the stationery structure to make the appearance more concise and mass production more convenient. The main part of Tape holder is completely made by wood with superior grain presenting the natural texture.
Branch-like appearance has simple beauty.
The roller is made of flexible glue,which makes the roller elastic and fit the internal adhesive tape roller.
The structure is in favor of adhesive tape’s installment.
Wood Pen Morphological characteristics of tree branch is employed in the modeling of Wood Pen, making the pen point scalable. The pen becomes more interesting by designing the button, which controls the tip, into twig shape.
Wood Ruler-Pencil Pencil and ruler are the most commonly used tools in drawing, and Wood Ruler-Pencil contains both of them making it more convenient to use.

Postercard There are many problems about current postcard: old theme, single function, lack of culture and local characteristics. The design concept comes from the Chinese traditional paper-cut and lantern. This page of the postcard can be torn down, then the four can be combined into an auspicious lantern. People can also send dierent postcards to friends.
Herbal Tea Packaging Long shaped box with solid color dots can give people modern fashion sense. The internal independent packaging is fashion, health and convenient. Use the color to distinguish dierent seasonal herbal tea.
