There’s nothing quite like the warmth and natural beauty of finished wood. The way stains, sealers and topcoats interplay with wood grain and texture creates an earthy, timeless aesthetic that strikes a chord in people everywhere. Even solid color, pigmented finishes on natural wood have a certain weight and feel that speaks of authentic quality, durability and lasting beauty. One dimension of the intrigue of wood finishes is the gradual change in what’s trending. In this and the next two issues, we will highlight significant trends we are tracking in the wood finishing industries today. The first is waterborne coatings. Today’s waterborne stains, sealers and topcoats are not “your grandfather’s” waterborne coatings, and wood finishers have taken notice. Advancements in coatings science have given the latest generation of waterborne finishes amazing performance and application characteristics, and a rich warm appearance that is equal, and in many cases superior, to traditional solventborne finishes. Finish Repair is the winner of three Sherwin-Williams ProVisions™ Awards since 2012, primarily because it helps kitchen cabinet and furniture manufacturers and their showroom/installers save time and money through the application of Sherwin-Williams color-matched markers, fill sticks and burn-in repair products, as well as a large epoxy color selection. Don’t Scrap Because of a Scrape It’s a costly proposition to scrap a cabinet door during final inspection due to finish damage. It’s even more expensive and time consuming to replace a door after delivery or during installation. To do so means time and money not only for the manufacturer, but also for the distributor and/or installer/technician, as a new door must be ordered, shipped and installed. Color matching the new door to the existing cabinet may be also be an issue, depending on the finish. Finish Repair provides epoxies and burn-in products that may be used to resolve finish damage, including chips, scratches and dents on the factory floor or as the cabinets or furniture are delivered and installed in a customer’s home or office. Epoxies are used for areas that need maximum strength repairs, while burn-ins are melted into minor defects and then leveled off for a smooth surface. Finish Repair offers custom color matching to all Sherwin-Williams stains and pigments and produces more than 70 color combinations for some manufacturers.
