As we begin 2019, I can’t help but reflect on the tremendous change taking place in the business world around us. I am incredibly appreciative of our customers for partnering with The Sherwin-Williams Company as we navigate this change together. The environment in 2018 saw a robust North American economy, but certainly presented challenges on a global scale. Whether it was changing regulatory requirements, tariffs, raw material inflation, Brexit, or fluctuating currencies – there was plenty of volatility to contend with around the world. However, I prefer to look at these challenges as opportunities. In times like these, we can make a difference. We can provide solutions to these challenges to help our customers differentiate and grow their business. If regulatory agencies are mandating lower VOCs, we want to provide technologies that can seamlessly transition our customer’s production lines to waterborne coatings and optimize throughput. That’s why our top priority at Sherwin-Williams is helping our customers solve their most difficult challenges. With the globalization of products, comes the need for localization. Wherever our customers are manufacturing, we have global products that can be produced and serviced locally – utilizing our on-site technical support and expertise worldwide.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY DEMANDS THE VERY BEST FINISH Ohio Certified Stains™ SHER-WOOD® SB Stain System The SHER-WOOD® SB Stain System offers 22 Ohio Certified Stains™ that deliver dependable color consistency for both dealers and homeowners throughout the buying process. With SHER-WOOD SB Stains, it’s easy to provide clear, consistent colors without sacrificing performance. Your wood products deserve the highest quality coatings delivered by a company that pays attention to detail. More than 250 craftsmen across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana utilize Ohio Certified Stains (OCS), which now include 22 certified SHER-WOOD SB stain colors as of July 1, 2018. Each pre-manufactured stain that uses the same OCS number is identical in color, which allows consumers to purchase additional matching pieces even years later. The Ohio Certified Stains SHER-WOOD finishing system features a wider range of custom colors that are deep, rich, and clean. These stains are verified for color match on Red Oak, Brown Maple, Cherry, and Quarter Sawn White Oak. Each stain is formulated for spray-on and wipe-off application, and takes 45 seconds to develop full color with an open time of two to three minutes. “The Sherwin-Williams OCS formulas have advantages over the competition due to exceptional anti-settling properties, improved color consistency across the entire piece, and favorable wiping characteristics,” said Erik Clark, SherwinWilliams Sales Rep, Industrial Wood. These stains provide excellent batch-to-batch color consistency to give suppliers and consumers repeatable palettes courtesy of a tighter color tolerance. Sherwin-Williams stains do not sacrifice any performance – improving package stability with enhanced resistance to hard settling. Only a select number of suppliers produce Ohio Certified Stains. ith forty-one years as a building materials supplier of siding, trim, and wood paneling products in Chilliwack, Canada, Woodtone has always been a family-run company backed by a culture of collaboration and positivity. “The minute you walk in the door, you know they’re a unique company,” Bob Ricci, Strategic Account Manager, SherwinWilliams Industrial Wood Coatings said. “They’re all about the customer experience.” Woodtone is selective about who they work with, but they’re confident about their relationship with SherwinWilliams. “One of the best things about working with Sherwin-Williams is that our companies have similar values , allowing us to be successful together,” said Amy Malcolmson, Woodtone’s Marketing Communications Manager.

FORMULATING COMPETITIVE SOLUTIONS A close six-year partnership between Sherwin-Williams and Woodtone formed when the two companies began collaborating on the development of specialty products to expand Woodtone’s offerings of prefinished product solutions.
Woodtone and Sherwin-Williams collaborated to create solutions that could compete strongly across North America. In June of 2018, Woodtone launched their ColorSELECT™ collection after transitioning to the BP Siding Select topcoat with the help of the Sherwin-Williams team. Utilizing the BP Siding Select waterborne coating, this palette of 20 solid colors for fiber cement or engineered wood profiles provides a 30-year no fade limited warranty – setting Woodtone apart from its competitors. “Sherwin-Williams is a household name – everyone has faith in their capability,” Malcolmson said. “That really gives us the confidence to go to our customers and have their buy-in and trust in these products.”
Ricci explained how Woodtone introduced a low VOC solvent stain company to SherwinWilliams, who in turn used the solvents to create the newly launched stains for the Fineline paneling product line that utilizes square-edge patterns for penny gap profiles of knotty wood.

“The reason we made the switch was the constant development and commitment from Sherwin-Williams, making sure that this product was elevated above our current offerings,” Malcolmson said. The building materials supplier also devotes attention to creating products that fill gaps in the market. As demand for treated trim products increased, Woodtone committed to developing a solution specific to their business that would outperform competitive products. After 12 months of testing with Sherwin-Williams, the two companies engineered the brand IsoTek – the first step in their two-step coating processes for the RealTrim™ Treated product line. As Woodtone continues to utilize cuttingedge technology and coatings offered by Sherwin-Williams, they keep a pulse on their market and familiarize themselves with products, technologies, and services that can improve customer experiences throughout their business.
ELEVATING CURRENT OFFERINGS Woodtone seeks continual enhancements to their products to meet ever-increasing consumer needs. Most recently, the company rolled out new solutions for their Fineline wall and ceiling paneling profiles. SherwinWilliams assisted with developing, testing, and getting into production a new low VOC one-coat semi-transparent for Woodtone’s interior and exterior soffit, wall, and ceiling paneling product line.
